    The man himself- Arman!

I've had a house in Healdsburg for five years now and have tried many of the local wineries, and Starlite is a true gem! Totally my type of wines- bolder reds with European style winemaking. Never had a "Ribera del Duero" style wine in Sonoma until now and blown away! Great wine, great people, great price.

As we were winding down our trip to the PNW, we decided to check out the Alexander Valley for some wine appreciation. We pulled into this winery and it immediately made me feel comfortable as there are so many smaller and boutique style wineries in this area. I prefer smaller winemakers over big name. I love the intimate and personal approach from these smaller winemakers and the wine is always so tasty. Initially, no one was at the tasting room, so I tried calling to check their hours. As soon as I hung up, the owner Arman called me back to let me know they are open and Gary would be able to assist us. We had already left, so we turned around and went back. Gary welcomed us to the tasting room and provide some history of the vineyards. The winery is named for the breathtaking light that shines on the vineyards due to their crystal clear Sonoma County nights. Their winemaking is hand-crafted European style. Let me just say their wine is absolutely exquisite. Our tasting included a tasting of their 2019 Rosé, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon and the extraordinary 2016 Red Zinfandel. I immediately fell in love with their Cabernet Sauvignon as it is made "Bordeaux style". Being a huge fan of French Bordeaux wines, that was all I needed to hear to know how much I was going to love their Cab. The Zinfandel made "Claret style" was pure genius. Loved the lush tannins in this wine and the explosive tastes of blackberries across the tongue. These two wines alone had me pulling out my credit card quickly. We ended up purchasing the 2016 Zinfandel and the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon (only 125 cases produced). It was a hefty price for just these two bottles but so totally worth it. Now that I am home I wished I would have bought more. Just a great reason to return. Here is a tip: Be sure to check in on Yelp as they offer a free tasting otherwise it is $50.00 to taste. The good news is that the $50.00 is deducted from any wine purchase. I am so glad I discovered these phenomenal wines and I highly recommend a stop here to get your grape on!

I cannot say enough great things about Starlite! We were staying at the Montage which was very close by and asked the concierge if she could get us a reservation at a winery was that was different and somewhere small. We wanted to go somewhere that produces less than 1,000 cases or so a year and something that was more intimate. And oh she delivered! She booked us a reservation at Starlite Vineyards and I couldn't have been happier. We actually were the only ones at the tasting and we we blessed to be hosted by the tasting room manager! The location was super quaint and they had the vines right there in property. The tasting room was very clean and upscale. it only had about 2 tables. We sampled all of their wines produced and even got a bonus of the 2016 Cabernet, which we both ended up ordering! Amazing!!! The Zinfandel was also delicious, which I also ordered. The tasting was perfect and the manager guided us though all the notes, etc. Got some small snacks with it as well. The winery only does produce about 1,000 cases a year, so I highly recommend to come to Starlite for something different and away from all the mainstream vineyards. Something more low keys and slower pace, without the crowds! Maybe the best Cabernet and Zinfandel in the valley!

We had an extraordinary experience at Starlite. Gary took very good care of us. And we unexpectedly got to meet the owners as well. We hung out for over two hours chit chatting and enjoying the whole experience. I would highly recommend a visit.

    Stunning Zinfandel

Exquisite wines, start us off with the Zinfandel and it's devine, claret style, intricate phenolics of ripe raspberry and strawberry, with notes of bramble, stewed blackberries pie filling, a hint of leather, and soft lush tannins. Then he gives us the Viognier which hangs on the vine longer for a higher brix (sugar) concentrated fruit this one shows the classic stone fruit of white peach, nectarine and ripe apricots, some grassy flavors and honey blossom. Then to the rose' which is derived from all of the grapes on the property. Bigger style with plenty of gusto for the 'only red' drinkers, then we taste 2 vintages of the Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2019 and the 2015. Both of them deserve high points in ratings - a 98 and 97. The first one is classic blackberry, blueberry, richness, bittersweet chocolate, cedar and eucalyptus in all of the right places, the 2nd one, the 2015 stands out for some Tempranillo in the wine, about 15%. Truly excellent wine tasting!

The restaurant is the building to the left as you enter as well as the museum. We ordered the 3 course menu with wine pairing for what I thought was a great price. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the wine pairings. The crab fritter with caviar: 3.5 stars. It was a fried potato ball with minimal crab. The caviar and accompanying sauce is what made the dish. The mushroom risotto: 3 stars. Perhaps it's because I don't care for risotto - too moist for rice. However the flavor was good, albeit a little salty. The mushroom were cooked for perfection and delicious, wish I had more. The salmon with broccolini:3 stars. cooked to order. I like mine well done due to preventions of parasites. But it was still moist. The accompanying sauce did not help flavor much but I guess I could have put more salt. I really enjoy the veggies in the dish. The broccolini was cooked the way I like and the rings of squash were tender and sweet. The hubby got the beef shoulder for his third course:5 stars. Tender and falls apart much like a pot roast. Flavorful as well. Apple tart and ice cream: 4 stars. I actually enjoyed the dish. Not too sweet. You can taste all the flavors and texture. Over all we had a great time with the wine, food was accompaniment. The museum was fun to stroll thru as well.

When I tell you that my friend and I were hooked from beginning to end during our tasting, I am not kidding you. Reece was absolutely phenomenal and so was our entire tasting experience at Zialena. After passing by Zialena several times on my trips to DeLorimier, my friend and I finally decided to check them out for a tasting. You know I have to start off with their estate and grounds. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! I will always be a fan of classic winery setups, BUT... I LOVED the modernized look of Zialena! The exterior of their building alone is so eye catching and unique. And then you walk inside and think, damn this place is so chic and hip! I love the artwork, I love the stylish tables and chairs with the bright orange seat cushions, I love the youthful and fun atmosphere and vibe. It's just wonderful. Those views! I underestimated how great they'd be because you can't see much from the outside. But once you're sitting on their patio, the views seem to be endless. Countless views of the hills and their beautiful vineyards. It helped that it was a stunning day outside too. Reece set us up on their side patio which was glorious. Now about this wine; fan-freakin-tastic! I loved every single wine that I tried. All were scrumptious. I'll get more into the wines in a bit, but first I'm gonna tell you a little bit about what I learned from Reece. Although the actual tasting room is newish, the winery is a fourth generation run operation by the Mazzoni family. The family hails from Italy and they've been harvesting grapes and producing wine for years. The winery is actually named after their Great Aunt Lena (Zia Lena in Italian). Mark and Lisa (sister and brother) are the owners and they also run the winery. Zialena grows grapes for over 90 different varietals and all of them are estate grown! That's right; those vineyards that surround their property are actually their own. They use whole cluster fermentation to produce their wines which basically means that they ferment the grapes with the stems (the stems aren't removed). This allows for more of an elaborate flavor profile in their wines. They also ferment in concrete with the top open. Never really heard of open top fermentation prior to coming here, but it allows for more oxygen to come in contact which helps with faster yeast production amongst other things. Alright, let me take my geeky wine brain hat off for a second. Reece had us completely engaged during this tasting. I literally started taking notes because it was so much interesting information. But those wines, dear GEEZUS! So, so good. Their unique fermentation techniques really paid off because their wines are so rich and complex. We tasted one welcoming white wine (Sauvignon Blanc) and 4 reds which were all incredible. The Cappella Red Blend was to DIE for and undoubtedly my favorite wine of the bunch. The spices were so pronounced but yet the wine went down oh so smooth. Took a bottle of that and I don't think it even lasted a few days. Reece was so knowledgeable and confident. This man probably could have sold us the earth and we would have bought it. Seriously. So engaging and we loved it. But wow, I'm impressed. Zialena is a one of a kind.

I don't normally drink wine but came for the olive oil and the experience and it did not disappoint! I also eventually changed my mind that red wine can be good:) We were seated indoors and Edd gave us the rundown of what we'd be tasting for the afternoon complete with stories and lots of fun facts. (I now look at any bottles that say "cold pressed" with some light skepticism since it's clearly only written there for marketing purposes!) We ordered a selection of the panini sandwiches, the burrata and butternut squash salad, and the charcuterie board. The fire cheese was delicious and the spread was perfect. Throughout lunch, Edd brought us different wines to taste and by the end we were most definitely sold on the Stone Soup (the red version). The olive oil tasting was so much fun. First of all the bread was so delicious. And then we tasted about 15 (?) different olive oils or vinegars. The raspberry, lemon, and garlic ones were clear favorites. My personal favorites were the garlic and sage. Even though it was a bit of a rainy & cloudy day, the views from the patio were beautiful. We finished our wine out by the fire pit outside, and now I really need to come back during the summertime when the skies are more clear for the full experience. I left with lots of olive oil and great Christmas gifts for the family. The four piece olive oil sets are perfect for that and I brought one home for my family and we did our own inspired mini taste testing (I still miss Trattore's bread tho). 10/10 recommend and yes I definitely want to come back for the summer views and this pizza oven I keep reading in all the other reviews:))
