I love coffee shops, so I always get excited when I can try a new to me spot, like The Borough. I…read moredon't get to Allendale very often (maybe twice a year) so when I was heading to Grand Valley's campus for an event recently, I made sure to allow extra time to stop by. The parking lot in front is pretty small, and there is only one access point, so if you go past it, you'll have to turn around near the apartments behind it. Don't drive on the sidewalk... I didn't, mostly because there is a sign that says, "This is a sidewalk" which made me laugh. (Truly that should be an entrance into the parking lot!) The space is very bright and airy with cute decor and space to get some work or studying done. I was greeted right away when I walked in and I had a tough time deciding what to order. I wasn't hungry, but I love that they have a full on food menu - including salads, burgers(!!!), bagels, toasts, paninis, pastries, etc. Plus all the regular coffee items, boba, smoothies, and teas. I went with one of the seasonal specials, the banana bread matcha. It didn't take too long to come out and it was very tasty - not really what I was expecting, but I liked it. It reminded me of a very green banana (which is how I prefer bananas), it wasn't super sweet but also not super matcha-y. They are expanding their space, so I am interested in coming back to see what that looks like and to order more delicious drinks and try the food!

I love the healthier food options they have, but you never have to twist my arm for their panini and tater tots as well! They always have fun specials for drinks and the staff have great recommendations. Go check out this great woman-owned spot!

So I really dropped the ball with this review. I usually start with a bunch of photos, but I was…read moretoo preoccupied with taking in the charming ambiance, the veteran-created art pieces, the photos and stories all around honoring the legacy of the heroes who have served their nation, and getting to meet the interesting people inside. I realize the tiny structure is perfect for what this place is all about - honoring the stories each of us holds through connection and community. The coffee was smooth and flavorful, possibly the best drip coffee I've ever had (and I have had some really good coffee!) and I'm told by my wife that the chai was absolutely delightful. A small menu of drinks and treats may make this spot slip off of your radar - but you would be missing out on a magical little place that, as the name implies, truly has heart... and plenty of it.

I love all of the natural light, music (Jack Johnson when I was there), and overall vibes. Enjoyed the pour over coffee (takes time) and they had almond milk I could add on request. Has Heart Coffee Shop celebrates veterans and their stories. Their goal is to make sure every vet never has to pay for coffee. Located directly across from the GR Children's Museum entrance in Veterans Memorial Park. Street parking (meters / MOTU App) if you can get in before the museum opens.

I have not been dedicated…read moreto anything like vegetarian or vegan exclusively, but I was raised with a whole lot of alternative food options and what's so amazing how absolutely yummy everything they have on their menu truly is with less of the bad-for-you stuff. Sure it's a little pricey, but you're going to pay more for premium crafted fare. They also have an awesome little patio hidden in the back, which is just delightful on the nice days that we have in the spring and summer and fall in Grand Rapids. They're very convenient to the Zoo so you can include them in making a day out of your excursion on West Fulton. The coffee beverages are top-notch and the baked goods are right there with them. Rise is a highlight of the John Ball hood. Now, this might not be the place for thin-skinned MAGA b*tch-boys with fragile egos and issues -ahem- compensating... but for grownups with regular-sized brains (and other parts) who love an amazing local shop with values that are shared by the city and neighborhood around it? Spot-on. More places like this, and few like union-busting Starbucks, etc. Three cheers, and five stars!
