Still really new, but good coffee…read more Been on the hunt for new coffee shops. This one popped up on yelp so I decided to muse my trek and try them. Outside is decorated well, and with it close to the lake and the park its got lots of alternative seating options around. Inside is a little sparse on seating and decoration. It's very much a brand new location just getting itself set up. It's got a little of the macabre themes but it's light and open. So it's basic but has a little character. The got a house blend with a snickers latte. No coffee cups just to-go. Took my pics and began the trek home. The coffee was very hot when I got it. They brew their drip coffee in large brewing stands so it's a very hot brewing method. Lose a lot of the subtle flavor notes that way, but as it cooled down I was able to get the bright and mid notes. It's a strong roasted flavor mid with a little of the bright fruity notes on top. With better temp control, would probably get more of the fruit notes. Good coffee, just limited by the technique. The snickers latte was surprisingly pleasant. It had a decent amount of sugar but the roasted peanut flavor combined with the roasted coffee flavor notes really played well against each other. It really helped cut through the caramel sweetness and led to a nice sweet dessert like sip. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, the lead brewer was happy to talk about their beans and process. They were busy though, so couldn't get all the details. But they know their beans and their roast. Price is actually kinda low for the quality. Not upset about that, but I suspect that they may raise prices as time goes on to match other coffee shops. They do make their own bakery items but the selection is limited. The cookie I had was a solid oatmeal raisin but wasn't unique or different. Just a well executed oatmeal raisin. As a coffee shop, it's still figuring itself out. Once it gets its character and refines its brew then it stands to be a strong coffee shop for the area. For now, it's great but basic.

Coopertine Matcha is located in Granby in an adorable little cottage. When I opened the door, I noticed around 15 people waiting to place their orders. There are some tables inside, but far more people than available seating. They also offer some pastries, such as Apple Turnovers, but most were sold out by the time I arrived. I decided on the As You Should Matcha. These are pricey matchas. A 12 ounce is $11, and a 16 ounce is $12. I don't think I have ever paid $12 before, for a single non alcoholic drink ever, not even in my travels. However, when I saw how dedicated they are to making them I understood the cost. They whisk the matcha by hand for each, single order. I watched the guy whisking, I was thinking his arm must be pretty sore after three orders, not to mention the whole day. They use a scale to measure every ingredient. The As You Should was made with caramelized banana, and blue agave sea salt whip. This is excellent matcha. It is super smooth and silky, sweet just enough, bananay just enough, not at all bitter. Truly tasty and refreshing. The agave gives it a cool and refreshing flavor. Orders were being written on Post-it notes, which gave it a slightly unfinished feel. It's hard to explain--it wasn't bad, just something that stood out. One thing I absolutely loved is that they make their own syrups--that's a huge plus. I ordered the strawberry matcha because I had an incredible one last year at Nitro Bar, and I was hoping to recreate that experience. Unfortunately, it just wasn't for me. Looking back, I should have trusted my instinct and ordered the coquito flavor instead. I got the 11-ounce drink, but I didn't enjoy it enough to finish it and ended up throwing it away. I drove about 30 minutes to give this place a try. While I appreciate supporting new local businesses, I'm not sure I'd make the drive again. I may give them another chance someday to try the coquito matcha, since that was my original choice.

I prefer it to be made from Single Origin beans, from places like Africa that have bright flavor profiles. And I prefer a medium light roast that highlights the quality of the bean. Most places make their iced coffee from blends and medium dark or dark roast levels. Grounded Coffee Co is the rare CT coffee shop that made my iced coffee with an Ethiopian Single Origin roasted by Ilse. Ilse, a North Canaan, CT, was not on my radar. They are now. This was one of the best iced coffees I've had from a shop all year. And it matched my preferences. Grounded is small, but the shop was cute, had some inside seating, and seemed to have an outside seating area, although I did not go out back to see it. Service was friendly and helpful. Very impressed with this visit experience. Five Stars.

Drum Roll is predominantly a coffee roaster, but they sell some merch as well. They may serve beverages on site, but that doesn't seem to be a focus of the website or store and I was in and out when I visited. I did not see any seating. I bought two things at the small, thin store in OW, and I also recently had cold brew made with Drum Roll coffee at Bake Market in Rocky Hill. The following things stood out. First, the person who helped me, who I assume was the owner, was conversant in coffee terms that matter to me. Sometimes I talk to a store employee about single origins or roast levels, and they don't know what to say. The person who helped me knows coffee and they had a good selection. Second, my Ethiopian Single Origin Beans I used for a home pour over, turned iced coffee, were obviously fresh roasted. You could taste the roast. A coffee can actually be too fresh roasted, and based upon experience, I think some of the listed tasting notes will be more prominent in a few more days. I usually wait 7 to 10 days after the roast date before using coffee. For this reason, putting the roast date on the bag might be a good move. Third, the coffee bag is a high end bag. I buy a lot of craft coffee over the internet. Some places try to have useful bags, and some places try to save money on bags. Drum Roll has a ziplock style seal that makes keeping coffee fresh easier. Their bag is on par with other top places. Fourth, Drum Roll serves canned cold coffee. I'm not sure if they rotate their offerings. I bought one snap chilled Papua New Guinea Cold Brew can. It was very smooth and above average for a canned coffee product. Fifth, I don't remember the exact price, but I remember thinking the price was reasonable. I would definitely buy more bags if I happened to be in OW when I needed coffee beans and Drum Roll is open. Sixth, Bake Market's cold brew made with Drum Roll coffee was rich and smooth. It had a darker flavor and roast profile than I normally I drink, but it was well executed for that style. Based upon all of this, I recommend Drum Roll for people who make coffee at home. While I have my own grinder at home and buy whole beans, they even asked if I wanted the beans ground. 4.5 Stars

The staff was very nice, attentive, and ready as we stumbled upon the new kiosk on their opening weekend. They serve coffee and tea with a seasonal drinks, plus a few sandwich and pastry offerings. Since it was their opening weekend, they were giving out free croissants which was warm, flakey, and buttery. My mom and I got their seasonal lattes; Lavender Matcha and Honey Lavender (coffee). I really enjoyed my latte, the matcha had great flavor and the lavender syrup was delicious. The menu is small and there is only one size for all drinks. Service was very quick. I would stop again the next time I visit the mall to get myself a treat or need a coffee break from shopping.
