Hermosa Cafe is a locals-only hot spot on Durango's main drag…read more I got crunchy and granola vibes and I don't say that in a bad way. It actually reminded me of a cafe I used to frequent in college. They make all their baked goods in house, it's tough to choose! You order at the counter and the line was long on a Saturday morning. They have a handwritten chalkboard menu behind the counter, but if you can't see it in line they have paper menus to grab at the register. The tough decisions arise when you get close to the pastry case. It's filled with delicious quiches, buns, and morning staples. I was intrigued by the quiches and they had a huge selection of them. I landed on the green chile and bacon (I think it was bacon?!) When I went to order I was hit with a question I wasn't prepared for. They asked me if I wanted it on a regular pie crust or a hashbrown crust. FTW?! I had never heard of such a thing. They said if I like potatoes then get the hashbrown crust...I'm so glad I trusted their recommendation! They indeed bake hashbrowns into the quiche and it acts as the crust. I don't know which crazy genius concocted this sorcery, but holy moly I love the ingenuity! I don't eat quiche that much and this one stood out. I'd definitely suggest the quiches to other people! A little chaotic inside on a weekend. You bus your own tables and the line gets narrow when you have constant foot traffic back and forth for picking up your order, going to the bathroom, etc. Staff was working hard though to move as quickly as they could. A pleasant find in Durango!

We ordered the French onion soup, which was good but the quiche we ordered was fantastic! Probably one of the best quiches we've ever tasted. We would definitely come back to have that again and to try a pastry.

May 2026 My wife and…read moreI were visiting Durango for a few days. She took the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad to Silverton, but unfortunately I wasn't able to go because of a medical condition that prevents me from traveling to high altitudes, and the train climbs to around 10,000 feet. After she left on her adventure, I decided to find some breakfast. While I was walking around town, my aunt called. She and my uncle used to vacation in Ouray every year, so she knows the area well. She recommended Jean-Pierre Bakery, so that's where I headed. I was seated right away and ordered a coffee while I looked over the menu. My waitress was very friendly, and we chatted for a while. She even recommended a few places around town that I should check out. I finally decided on the Croque Monsieur (brioche, béchamel, ham, and Swiss cheese) served with a salad. When my meal arrived, it looked fantastic. The sandwich was delicious, rich, and full of flavor. It was my first time trying a Croque Monsieur, and I really enjoyed it. The salad was fresh and crisp, and the vinaigrette paired perfectly with it. After finishing my meal, I couldn't resist ordering a pistachio cream-filled éclair that had caught my eye when I first walked in. It looked beautiful, but unfortunately, it was a disappointment. The pastry was very dry, and the bottom was quite hard. It definitely didn't taste freshly made. The pistachio cream had a nice flavor, but there wasn't very much of it. I mentioned my concerns to my server, and she kindly brought me a chocolate éclair to try instead. It also looked wonderful, but it had the same problem. The pastry tasted old, almost like it had been sitting for a couple of days. I would absolutely return for another Croque Monsieur or to try something else from the breakfast or lunch menu because that part of the meal was excellent. As for the pastries, they certainly look beautiful, but based on my experience, I would probably pass on them next time. This would have been a solid 4 star if those eclair had of been good.

I've never been here, but it was a short walk from the Strater, they serve sandwiches to go, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Was pretty quiet at first, one person ahead of me, two people behind the counter. I ordered a Southwest sandwich and a chai latte. They were out of an ingredient for what I wanted, but they had a ready alternative in mind. Suddenly, after the notorious train whistle, a flood of people came in. All in a hurry because they needed to be back by the train leaving. Chaos ensues. The two employees start working double time, directing traffic, getting orders and manning the register while also making drinks. I was impressed by how quickly they got the orders out, and their calm resolve. It looks like a hard job, and I've worked in the service industry. Sudden large groups of people, small operating space, and people in a hurry for you to do all of it. I'd say it could probably use another employee, but they'd probably get in the way because it's so compact. The sandwich was excellent. Good taste, off you like a toasted bagel sandwich, it's an excrement choice. The chai was good, I don't normally have milk, so it wasn't perfect... for me. TLDR: good food, fast, wait five to ten minutes if you hear the train whistle before going in.
