Ugh! Non COVID19 related review. This is just me getting off of work at 8 o'clock on a Friday night hoping to pick up a take-out meal and nourish my body. I called to place a take-out order and got a busy signal seven or eight times. What kind of restaurant has a single party line in 2020? That would be my first question. Then the woman that answered the phone the first time I finally got a human on the line kept saying hello hello and then hung up on me and she was extremely rude. I called back got her again. She was very rude, no excuse for that in my opinion because people are trying to support these businesses so you need to up your customer service immediately. Since I was calling from work I said can I pay you on the phone because I have another friend picking the meal up and she said 'absolutely not, wasting my time and taking phone payments will tie up my phone line.' OK so if that's an issue get a second phone line so you can take more phone orders. Business 101, also common sense. Finally placed a simple order for a cheese then pizza which is one of their claims to fame, a basic tossed salad and one order of wings. I asked for no onions on my salad which is a simple request and a tossed salad, let's be honest. My friend went to pick up the mail which they said would be ready at 7:30, I had ordered at 6:45 PM. He had to wait in line for another 30 minutes. The pizza was cold. The tossed salad had a ton of onions sliced on top of it and was the worst form of a salad I've ever seen to be quite honest for the price. I posted a picture to show the number of onions that were on my salad. There was no dressing on the salad. The wings were pathetic almost as if they picked up a bag of frozen Tyson's wings at the grocery store and throw them in the oven. Just an awful experience and would never go to this place again. I don't care about their claims for a world famous this and that. We are in a time where customer service needs to be an elevated experience. There are tons of people out there trying to support your small businesses so you should manage the process in a much better way. And I don't know who the check was on the phone that was answering the phone but highly suggest replacement for that. read more

This place is known in the area for having excellent pizza and wings, so my family and I decided to give them a shot one night. The scampi wings in particular were described to us as life changing. We ended up getting an order of regular wings, an order of the scampi, and two pies. Scampi wings were good, but nothing to write home about. The sauce was better dipped in bread than it was on the wings themselves, which was a little disappointing. I recommend forgoing those all together and getting their regular buffalo, which were very tasty. The pizza was good as well, but a bit over priced in my opinion. The service is no nonsense and be patient on a Friday and Saturday night, when the place is packed! One of the Greatest This is a special review for me, a 5 star rating. I know it's always a matter opinion especially when it comes to pizza, but this legendary spot lives up to the hype. I see reviews from people saying that the pizza is "pretty" good and I am actually writing this to say that is understatement. I've been to some of the greatest pizza spots in the US, Pepes/Sallys/Bar [New Haven], Santarpios/Regina/Galleria Umberto [Boston], Tottonos/DiFara/Lucali [Brooklyn], and Prince St/Lombardis/Deninos [NYC] to name a few and the Star Tavern not only is in the same category it's actually better than most of these, except Tottono's. You have to know how to order the pizza to get the full experience. Our order was a simple roni pizza, double roni extra crispy. The pizza comes out a little burnt on the edges with cheese sauce and pepperoni fused to together with a char that cannot be replicated. Add this to classic old pizza parlor setting with a long bar serving ice cold beers and I don't think I could ask for much more. If the Star Tavern pizza was the only pizza available for the rest of my life, I'd be satisfied. If you are in the area this is a must stop. I will never pass it up if I'm driving through Jersey. Star Tavern is one of those places that you consistently hear about if you are into pizza. It has a good reputation but I did not find it to be too impressive. Nothing stuck out to me about the pizza. It was undercooked and had a doughy smell and taste even though it was thin. It was also greasy and got soggy if it sat for a little. I suggest ordering it well done next time. One of the more disappointing pizza experiences considering the hype. I am not saying the pizza was horrible but not anywhere near 5 stars. I've been going to Star ever since I started to drive and it is to this day it is my favorite Pizza spot and I've spent 5 years living in Brooklyn, we won't even go into what's called pizza where I now live. The pizza is a thin crust pan type pie with the sauce right to the edge, no large, rolled edges here and the ingredients are all fresh tasting and top quality. I've only had their pizza so far but the other food coming out of the kitchen looks great, maybe one day I'll try something else. The only thing I don't like about Star is that it gets crowded, and it has limited parking. The solution, get there before the dinner crowd. read more

Excellent thin-crust pizza and a fun, divey vibe! As soon as I saw the 70's orange formica bar, wood paneling, and a couple arcade games, I knew I was in for a treat. I came here during happy hour with my best friend on a weekday and we sat at the bar. We ordered Blue Moons, Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey shots (Do the Dew!), and a half-plain/half-pepperoni pizza that all came out right away. The pizza had a super thin crust with a perfect cheese/sauce ratio that went all the way to the edge. The pepperoni slices were all curled up into cute little bowls of greasy goodness! Star Tavern is towny AF. You walk in, everyone stares and it seems like they all hate you. No one comes to greet you so if you're a newbie it's hard to know if you seat yourself or wait to be seated. If you walk all the way through to the back wall where the kitchen is, that's where you can usually find someone who can seat you (or where you can pay and pickup if you ordered to go). I love Star and have been going there since I was a teenager, but had a very weird thing happen today... we came in from WO St. Patricks Day parade wearing green/ st pattys day hats, etc. We were not drunk, but they decided they wouldn't serve us alcohol, (our ages ranged from 55 to 78 yrs old so we were not young kids trying to get served). We were told they couldnt serve us because we came from the parade but that it had nothing to do with us personally. I will reiterate that we were NOT drunk AT all.. we were polite and waitress even said so... she said it was the Managers call.. then, when the Manager came over, he blamed it on her and said she made the call. Whatever... we ate and enjoyed the pizza until, about 30 minutes later, 3 boisterous men that were obviously from the parade and drinking came in and they got served ... by our same waitress! So, we figured they gave them preferential treatment as they probably knew them, and we were "unimportant" people to them... that said we probably spend a ton of money there over the year and now we arent sure about ever going back. Sooooo... I've had their pizza a few times and knew I was in for a treat. I'd even be bold enough to say this is some of the best pizza in NJ! For starters all of their pizza, from what I know and have seen, is super thin crust, but not that crispy unless you order it well done. The sauce is excellent as is the cheese ratio. Tonight was my first time dining in here and it was beyond packed, a very long wait, but it was well worth it. We had buffalo wings and the antipasto salad for starters, both of which were very delicious. We then had a meat lovers, plain and veggie pizza. The meat lovers was baaaanging, as was the cheese (which I had before, so this wasn't a surprise). The veggie however was a bit to heavy for the thin crust and kind of collapsed as I was taking my slice off of the tray, but not a big issue. It tasted OK, no complaints but nothing special, especially compared to the well seasoned meat lovers which had a lil kick to it. I would definitely go back, most likely "to go" as it was pretty much standing room only. Unless you're in a booth the seating at the center tables can be a little cramped. This is hands down my family's favorite eating spot. Thin crust pizza, great pasta, and drinks! We got there often most of the waiters and waitresses know us by name & know our order. The decor has changed over the years, but the same vibe has held. The pizzas are all thin crust, I prefer cheese and my brothers like the pepperoni or buffalo pie, but whatever you eat it comes out popping hot and delicious. The appetizers are decent, their wings aren't my favorite, but I do prefer the chicken fingers. Meaty and the honey mustard sauce is the best. I've also had salads and pastas from here and the pasta has always been great, the salads are regular to me. For a nice family environment and good pizza & pasta this is the place to go. read more

Star has a pretty good bar pie but it tends to come out overcooked. Crust is nice and thin, but so are the sauce and cheese. Everything is thin, bar pie style but not traditional Jersey pizza style that gives you more for your money. If I went back I would ask for the pizza light cooked but I'm not sure it's possible with that thickness. Sure, it's good, but nowhere near the best and I'm not sure why it keeps winning. I was really disappointed with my recent visit to Star Tavern. Our quick lunch ended up being a two hour ordeal. Our server, Patrick, forgot to put out pizza order in, which lead to us waiting 1 hr to get a thin crust pizza. The toppings were sparse, and it felt like they were trying to cut costs. To make matters worse, the service was incredibly slow, and the staff seemed disinterested in helping us. I expected so much more from a place that's supposed to be famous for its pizza. I won't be coming back anytime soon. We then wanted to place a to go order because we figured it would be faster and after waiting 45 minutes Patrick tells us the kitchen messed up our order and he told them to rush our pizza for us to receive it soggy.
