For my car it took less than 20 minutes. In the waiting room, the owner has some delicious medjool dates and some water if you need a refreshment! I called ahead to get a price and make an appointment. I was told the price would be $60. When I arrived, I was told the price was 69+8 something for the certificate so the total would be $78. While this review is years late, I had to post about great experience here. My car failed smog horribly and Nate & Miguel pointed out some areas I can check for issues. Turned out old cracked and disconnected vacuum hoses to various emissions-related equipment was problem. Replaced with more durable silicone hoses and went back for re-test. The waiting room is air conditioned, with chairs, and had containers of two types of dates plus bottles of water. Also a restroom. Mohamed finished with my car by the 20 minutes he had said. It is unfortunate when skin color dictates treatment and service. I almost never account negative experiences to my race, because I try to believe most people have moved beyond that. However, upon my visit here, I was told to wait in the outdoor area while my car's smog was checked. I was told it would take "just 10-15 minutes". So despite the very cold, windy, and rainy day it was today, I needed my smog checked so I weathered it. As the "10-15 minutes" became 45-50 minutes, the outdoor area I was waiting in began to flood as the rain and wind picked up. Though the area was under a canopy, my shoes became drenched as the ground around me began to swell with water. Since it was taking so long, I made my way through the puddles surrounding me and asked the owner (I think his name is Mohamed) how much longer it would take. He told me he was almost done, and a few minutes later directed me into the warm, INDOOR waiting area to make my payment. In this indoor area, I noticed other patrons -- who happened to be White -- sitting comfortably in the warm waiting room as they waited for their vehicles (including one person who arrived at the same time I did when I initially brought my vehicle).c Clearly, myself and the other person who came at the same time were given specifically DIFFERENT instructions on where to wait. Though, as I mentioned, I am someone who does NOT make things about race, I am not sure how else to deduce having all of the White customers waiting indoors while the lone Black customer waited outdoors in increasingly torrential conditions. To add insult to injury, as I got back to my car, I noticed the entire door panel -- which includes all of the power buttons to lock/unlock my doors and windows -- were DRENCHED in rain water, as he carelessly left my door open the entire time my car was being serviced (I've attached a pic). This treatment is highly problematic. Segregating your guests feels very 1950s America and should have no place in Marin County. This business is emblematic of the anti-Blackness that is prevalent in other communities of color, and I would advise anyone who is not about promoting prejudice and segregation to avoid this place at all costs. read more

Mohammad was friendly and professional. While getting a SMOG check is pretty simple, two things stood out to me: first, as I was arriving, he was literally helping an elderly client out to her car. He had hurried ahead of her to open her car door for her, and as she was getting in, he checked to make sure that she had all of her belongings and paperwork with her before she left. While working on my car, he noticed that a hose had detached. While he probably could've gotten away with offering to sell me a new one, he used a light and found it lying below, cut the frayed end and reattach it for me. I only know the basics about cars, so finding someone that I can trust to take care of it means something, and showing character is the best way to do that I think. read more

I was transferring my old car to me and needed a smog test but not just any, a "Star Smog Test." My new mechanic Robin's had told me about a guy who could see me faster than the place across the street- "nothing till 3pm." Here i am at a place right around the corner, getting a Star Smog Test at 10:34am! He has plenty of room to wait and line your car up! I highly recommend how quick i could get in. Literally seems like a hidden spot- (just before "The Grateful Dog" turn into the chain link fenced big front lot-you will see the Stars Smog images.) I once again took my now vintage 99 BMW to Star Smog . Given the age of my car, I was dreading the possibility of a round of the smog test "fail-go to shop to repair-return to smog test shop "cycle. A short call to Muhammad, "Yes, come in an hour" . A half hour in the waiting room eating some nice dates, Muhammad's announcement "You're done!", some deep conversation about the state of the world and I was on my way. Back to the DMV website, finished my payment and it sensed that the smog was completed, and now I am done. One trip. I was thankful for Muhammad's efficient testing and great upbeat attitude . Came at that time and a sign was posted on the window saying they're gone for a prayer from 1-2pm every Friday and they will be back at 2:30. Mohammad is a fair and ethical businessman who was extremely helpful in resolving my smog issue. As a former mechanic, I know when I'm getting the run around. My friend needed help getting his smog check done and unfortunately on his first test a hose was unplugged. To clear the error from the OBD monitor the car needed to be driven for a specified time and certain protocols were needed to reset properly. Mohammad, gave us the best option for a slightly higher price but included the retest. We were in and out within 30 mins after he got the car back on the machine. Not only was I greeted in a friendly way, but the person on the phone went out of their way to make sure I knew where the location was by texting me photographs. Every other year CA requires me to go to a STAR Smog station as my Toyota is older, a 2008 Corolla and I can't just take it to my usual mechanic in San Rafael. So I have been going to STAR Smog Check in Greenbrae since 2017 and I highly recommend them. They are fast, pleasant, professional & courteous. It takes about 20 minutes and I am on my way. They have a waiting room indoors if it is cold or raining. Today, was sunny and so I sat outside. Chairs are available. I sat out in the sun two years ago too. Getting your car smogged in order to drive it in CA is one of those things we just have to do and STAR Smog Check makes it pleasant and fast. It is just a first come --no appointment necessary. I have to go to work afterward so I allow plenty of time if they are backed up but usually they are just finishing a car and then it's my turn and I get to work early. This location is past the Trader Joe's, Cost Plus, Bev Mo, Vitamin Shoppe shopping and past the car wash and past Industrial Drive and just past the Chevron Station. The lot is large and spacious and easy to turn around in. As a senior, I appreciate the helpfulness of the manager who does the SMOG checks. I am happy to submit this positive review.
