Needed a smog check to register my car. Called ahead to ask if an appointment was needed and was told to just show up. Came by a little after 10am on a Saturday - well after their posted 9am opening time - and the place was completely closed. Locked doors, chained gate, no explanation. Huge waste of time. Just a heads up, as of May 2024 wanted $75 out the door for a 2016 Toyota RAV4. When I asked for the coupon price (as advertised on their website), I was told there wasn't one. Different smog places treat a Rav4 as either a passenger car or an SUV. It's considered a crossover or "mini-SUV" so might get charged at either the regular car or SUV price (which is higher). In contrast, "Auto Repair Specialist", down the street at 1421 Francisco Bldvd, did it for $50 (and their ad mentions that it is good for "2000 and newer vehicles, most cars and trucks". Seems like a no-brainer to get it done elsewhere. I originally found this place due to my girlfriend finding it as a top reviewed place on Yelp. It was my first time at this place. It's a very barebones set-up at a discrete location not too far from the freeway. Don't let the barebones looks fool you though! My experience was great! I had called in beforehand to see their availability and it is first come first serve. I was happy to see that they were operational 7 days a week. Very convenient. When I got there I was instructed to wait until he was currently done with another customer. Now I know this may seem crazy to some Marin folk, but guys...THE UNIVERSE DOESN'T REVOLVE AROUND YOU. I gladly waited my turn, as I understand that because there is only one person running the show, they must give that undivided attention to their current customer, as should be very understandable considering it is involving the operation of a motor vehicle. I drive a very sexy C7 Corvette Z51 trim. I am keeping a close eye on it whenever someone new is operating my car. The gentleman put me very much at ease with his communicative personality and clear sense of direction. Just a very informative and smart type of guy that made it easy to trust him. I paid $65 for my smog. Being a Vette owner, I don't complain much about pricing for many car services, as I know what it takes to maintain this vehicle. Don't go on a Friday. The person working that day shows up if/when he feels like it and is incredibly hostile. I went previously when Jim was there and he's great. The person who is supposed to be there Friday showed up over an hour late and was hostile at best and seemed insane at worst. The cost to smog a VW Vanagon was $150 for pass and $141.75 for fail. I was failed on a gas cap function test that the smog shop around the corner later noted was N/A in their testing. I paid the $141.75 and managed to get the retest charge down from $150 to $55. I never went back. I went to Smog Center Marin and passed for $85 out the door. Don't even waste your time here. I filed a complaint. They were fishing for $291.75 for a smog test. read more

Needed a smog check and spent 45 minutes in traffic to have them tell me they were shutting down in 15 minutes. The hours posted were closing at 6 PM? He said the owner or "old man" refuses to change the hours on the website. It was only 5:15 ? He couldn't be bothered because he obviously just wanted to close early even though I explained it needed to be done before my dmv appointment the next day and I sat in traffic including a storm. Another customer drives up at 10:15 and tells me he's gone there a lot and the guy is super unreliable. So, I get that. You own your own business and you want to be flakey. Your prerogative. Was referred to this place by another fellow Elite Yelper! I arrived and was checked in promptly, I had one car ahead of me. This is a very small shop but very efficient staff. I proceeded to the waiting area and did a little work and utilized the free WiFi. They brought my vehicle in and proceed to test the vehicle for the Smog Check needed for my registration renewal. About 15-20 minutes later, they were done. I showed my trusty coupon on my Yelp App, paid for my smog and was on my way in all about 30 minutes. Just a tip, the entrance is a small driveway, so be careful you can pass by it without knowing, I did the first time around, I had to drive around the block again to find it. Great service and staff! I've always had the same California-legal aftermarket air filter and my experience at this place is inconsistent. I've taken my car to get smogged here and have never changed a thing. Depending on the attendant, most are knowledgeable enough to know what the filter is, smog my car and pass with flying colors. One guy is ignorant and thinks an air filter means my car is sketchy. Ultimately, I just have to bring it back when a more knowledgeable, less judgmental person is working there and they pass me. Terrible customer service. I called in the morning to make sure they were open, and the person said no appointment needed. So I went at about 1:15 PM. But there was no one there ! There was one car on the ramp, waited for 5 mins, still no one. Then a man came from across the street and told me to wait in my car. So I figured he would be back soon.... waited another 10 minutes, and still no one came. I was just wasting my afternoon, so I left!
