Easily one of the worst Korean BBQ experiences I've had. The galbi was almost 50% fat and barely edible. There was no proper ventilation, so the whole restaurant became smoky and uncomfortable very quickly. The jumuloc was very bad -- we barely touched it. Most of the side dishes were extremely bland, and we even had to ask for kimchi ourselves. Star BBQ is so close to where I grew up and I can't believe I've never been here. We came here late at night around ~11pm and there was a wait for about 15 minutes. Once we were seated, our server immediately took our orders. It's spacious inside and didn't feel cramped even though it was fully booked and busy. The meat portions here are HUGE so definitely don't over-order! We got the more expensive menu because I love beef tongue. It's so hard to find cheap kbbq spots that have beef tongue so this was great! The other meat cuts were also delicious, and my favs were the beef tongue and boneless short rib. They had some sides but I wish there was a bit more variety because I quickly got tired of the meats. For dessert they had a froyo bar but it looked like it hadn't been cleaned all day and was a huge mess so I didn't really feel like getting that many things. The grill here is slanted so that the excess oil runs off. So the grill isn't replaced during service, rather its cleaned frequently. Service and meat quality are worth the price and you get a discount if you pay in cash. Some of our items did get forgotten but it wasn't that big of a deal. IT DOES THE JOB. Okay, it's not the highest quality nor the cleanest KBBQ, but, again, it does the job and won't burn a hole into your wallet. For the lowest level dinner on a weekend, it was $27.99 with some more premium items being only 1 per person. You can add yourself to their Yelp waitlist and the wait wasn't so bad when we were there. About 20 or so minutes? At least enough time to grab a matcha from Airoma Cafe (when the cafe had no line). The parking lot can get fisted, so potentially keep that in mind. The women's restroom when I went was clean enough. I think the only con aside from the cheapness and quality factor, is that you can't adjust the fan for the stoves. Even at maximum strength, it was still blowing smoke into our friend's eyes the entire night. Pain! I think the most amusing thing of ordering the meat here is that it comes out huge semi-cold blocks. No problem since you can cook it, but I have never seen that at any other KBBQ before. Usually it's laid out on a tray or at least it's flattened, here its like they know that they're just feeding the horde. Despite this, the meat was fine, cooked normally and tasted all right. Can never go wrong with the top blade, brisket, and thinly sliced pork belly. The grill is angled so that grease and oil drop down into the vat. We also go their tofu soup and corn cheese which was decent. The steamed egg was the flattest and saddest one that I've ever seen, lots of air bubbles in it and the Korean noodle soup wasn't cooked all the way as the noodles were still blocked and stuck together. If I had to, I'd skip these 2 dishes. We also kept ordering their salad and sliced onions and garlic to enhance the flavor of food, not bad. There's free frozen yogurt at the end (turn off your brain if it doesn't look the cleanest), but the only flavor available was pineapple, no swirl, but that's alright. There were toppings too. After cooking that plate it turned out to be 100% fat and no meat - I gave the whole plate back to the server who agreed and took it back. Meat quality is not good. The food is always amazing, we had the bulgogi, beef brisket and spicy pork belly. All the sides are amazing, love the spicy cucumbers, pickled radish, fish cakes and the potato salad. Our food server was very attentive and friendly, kept bringing us the meats and refills on our drinks. They came to clean the grill very fast. Star BBQ has been one of my favorite kbbq restaurants in Garden Grove. This place get's extremely busy but they do offer a waitlist you can join but sometimes even the waitlist can be long. For larger party's of 7+ you do have to call in and make a reservation. Last month (September), I was in charge of planning a team dinner for the place I work for. I needed to find a place that was open late enough for some of my team members could attend without us having to close the business we work at early. The business we work for is located in Irvine and we close at 9:30pm every day so I thought Star BBQ was perfect because they close at 1am Friday-Sunday. Keeping that in mind, i wanted to make sure I picked a time that would give everyone enough time to drive over safely. I called the week of our planned date to make a reservation for 15 for 10:20pm and the host was extremely helpful with setting that reservation up for me. She also let me know that last call to order would be 12am, which was perfectly fine with me. On the day of our reservation (September 26, 2025) , some of us arrived a little earlier than our reservation time so I wanted to check-in just so it gives the staff enough time to set up our table. When I checked in, the staff let us know they could already seat us and as they walked us to our table everything was already set up for us. Keep in mind, we are a large group so of course our order would be large. Also keeping in mind that last call was going to be 12am, we made sure to order as much as we could without having to make the staff go back and forth so often. The staff were so friendly/accommodating and always checking up on us to see if we wanted to order more. I've been to Star BBQ multiple times since it's not too far from where I live but majority of my coworkers are located in Irvine and all of them have never tried this place. Combo B is okay for me since I don't usually eat other things besides the typical brisket, pork belly and beef belly. Staff were attentive and I like how they clean their grills. Very efficient and fast. Their sides could improve more but it is enough. You'll have to ask for kimchi, garlic and jalapeño separately. Waited an hour to be seated which is normal for these kbbq establishments. What wasn't normal was the grill not functioning and taking 20+ minutes to cook the beef brisket ordered. The grill was cooking so slow that after an hour of sitting there waiting for it to EVENTUALLY cook the food we decided to leave. When we asked our server to grab a manager the host/manager came and put his hand over the table and said it was working and that there wasn't anything he could do. Like the stove top of a full order of uncooked bulgogi wasn't an indicator that something was wrong with the stove top. Two other servers came by our table that night to check on the heat because it was cooking so slow but I guess the best they could do was an additional 10% on top of the already included 10% cash discount for a ridiculous dinning experience. I am sure the temperature the stove top was cooking at was in violation of a food and safety code . Also there is no way the server brought out 12 orders of bulgogi and 16 orders of brisket because she didn't even remember to bring out our corn cheese nor fill our waters after my wife asking so many times she got tired of asking!!
