Formal Complaint: Unacceptable Harassment and Profiling ​I am writing to express my absolute outrage over the blatant harassment I experienced at your store today. I stepped inside for five minutes to browse pens, only to be immediately targeted and hovered over by a man I believe to be your manager--tall, brown hair, roughly 55. When he first asked if I needed help, I gave him a clear "no." ​Apparently, "no" wasn't good enough for him. Two minutes later, he was back in my face, breathing down my neck with, "You still looking at pens?" When I confirmed I was, he had the audacity to suggest I go grab the "free pens" up front. When I declined those, he started badgering me about "ordering" something. ​Let's be honest: he wasn't being helpful; he was trying to push me out of the store. I am currently homeless and was seeking temporary shelter from the pouring rain. I thought I'd be productive and shop while I dried off, but instead, I was treated like a criminal. ​I made sure to tell him exactly how rude and condescending he was on my way out, and his "just trying to help" excuse was a pathetic insult to my intelligence. It is disgusting that your employees feel entitled to judge and degrade people based on their circumstances. I wouldn't trust this man to clean a litter box, let alone manage a business. ​You need to deal with the toxic management at this location immediately. If a store looks and acts this bottom-tier, it's no surprise it looks like it's headed for permanent closure. Dan is an amazing guy. He never made me feel like an outsider, and the interview process was smooth. He had a few good stories to tell and was friendly the whole time. However, the store was lean on employees. It took some time until I was able to get to my appointment. Do not display signs with wrong info. Will not matter how clean the store or how nice your employees. This was the worst treatment I have ever received at a Staples in my life. I went into the store to buy gift cards, Staples had a promotion where you could buy up to 8 gift cards ($200 each) with no activation fee. I don't always take advantage of the promotion, however I received a letter in the mail from my bank the one of my credit cards was not being used, and in danger of being shut down due to "inactivity". So I thought "might as well use it". And Staples promotion was running, so perfect timing. I usually go to different staples in sacramento, but recently moved to Rancho Cordova, and found this Staples was closer to where I lived. This was my first time walking into the store, but I have done this at least 10 times already w/o issues. I walked right in, grabbed 8 gift cards ($200 each), walked up to the register (there was no line), gave the cashier the gift cards (an old lady named Linda), and was ready to pay and leave. This is when the mistreatment began. Linda first grabs the gift cards, and whistles to herself "Ok, whew." Then says, "Ok before we do this, I'm going to need to see your ID and the credit card you plan to use." I'm like, "OK." I've never been confronted like this before, but had no problem with that. I assume she was just checking that I was using my own account and not someone else's. Linda proceeds to stare down my ID for like 30 seconds. Holding up to her eyes, turning it over to stare at the back, comparing it with the credit card. I have no idea what's going on. I'm thinking, "The names match, what is she doing?" So she says, "Um, I need to go to talk to my manager." And she takes my credit card and ID to the store manager, Candee, who was at another register. I'm still thinking this is just a weird store policy, but what happens next catches me off guard. Linda starts whispering in Candee's ear and pointing at my ID, there's some confusion, then Candee says "Oh yup, We can't accept your ID." I asked why, she points to my signature on the bottom of the card which has printed letters instead of the typical cursive signature. So we go into some long back & forth debate, bc I've never experienced this before. I am told that I am not allowed to purchase any gift card at their staples if they don't approve my ID signature. The California ID was real, signed at the DMV, Candee verified it was real, but said maybe I should "call the DMV about this." This still doesn't make sense, so I keep going back and forth with the store manager until finally Candee gives up & tells Linda to run my gift card purchase. So Linda breaks the seal on each of the 8 gift cards, scans the barcode on each of them, then finally I am allowed to make the purchase, until of course another curveball, my credit card issuer blocks the transaction because it's a large purchase in a new area, and I hadn't used the card in months. So I apologize for the misunderstanding and excuse myself to step outside the store and call my bank. The bank verifies my identity in about 10-15 minutes, they release the hold on the card, and I walk back into the store with the bank representative still on the phone while I complete the transaction. Now I am at the register with this lady Linda again letting her know the bank released the hold on the card. Linda responds, "I need to see your credit card and ID, and I have to get the store manager to approve this again." What?!? After all that earlier back and forth we have to do this all over again? This time Candee is in a back office, nowhere to be found. Linda sends a different store rep into the back office to ask Candee to approve the purchase, the store rep come back immediately and says Candee won't approve the purchase. I get no reason this time, but Linda tells me "your card declined so we can't do the purchase." Honestly, it was all too much at this point. I don't understand why they treated me like I was doing something wrong. I've bought gift cards from Staples in earlier years when they've offered this promotion. It's a promotion that Staples offers regularly. It seems like Staples is ok with honest people buying gift cards. I am glad Staples has a corporate contact service center because I'm going to hit them up about this. If there's anything in their store terms I'm missing about this promo special, as a long-time customer, I need to know about it. If 1- my signature on my ID needs to look a certain way to get approved, or 2- credit cards are only allowed to be used from certain banks, or 3- I am disqualified from purchasing if my credit card company blocks a large purchase until they receive identity verification, or 4- this Staples won't sell the max 8 gift cards to one person, or whatever other made up BS that this Staples came up with from disallowing my purchase today, BE CLEAR! Looking back on the situation, it seems Linda was the main person who had an issue with my purchase, she never told me why. It sucked was just a ridiculous experience. read more

I don't go to this location a lot, but whenever I have an office supply I need, I have always found this location to stock the item I need! I was looking for ink for my Cross fountain pen (yep...who still uses fountain pens these days...Ha-ha-ha!) and they were readily available here. So I bought the cartridges in two colors - one on black and the other in blue. I normally use the blue, especially for signing documents. This place is also a nice location to browse around...you can find the latest technology for the items they sell in-store...printers, monitors, keyboards, mice and all that fun stuff. You can easily spend hours here browsing. The store is very clean. There's not much shoppers around (or I'm probably visiting on a weekend, than on a weekday). And the staff is always around ready to assist you if you need them. Try this place for all your office supply needs! read more

I had stopped coming here a while back because about a year and a half ago. The people in the print area were extremely rude. I've had a Photo booth company for over 10 years and I've always used staples to get my stuff done over the time the turnaround changes the people changedrecently, I had an experience today with Jocelyn and she helped me through all my needs extremely wonderful. Hi-ya! We had back to school shopping to do and while there is Amazon, targets and Walmart's--surprisingly Staples is competitively priced. It has a really good selection, everything is easy to find and the display (again tons of options) make it with going here over online or even the big box stores. There isn't a lot of staff around, but they do serve up front as cashiers. Clean layout, good good prices and everything was easy to find. read more

I came in looking for printer ink that I haven't been able to find anywhere and was lucky enough to find it here. Very clean and organized store with friendly people working, especially the cashier who was so sweet and helpful. I'm glad to support a business that gives young people an opportunity to begin their professional journey. My only gripe would be that of course there's always gotta be one know it all who acts condescending towards customers and coworkers. I noticed a lady named 'Candy' who really needs to be coached on being more professional and courteous to others. She interrupted my transaction as I was checking out to scold the cashier and made it a very awkward moment. I came to this location because it was the closest to my work. Needed to print up my paperwork for my promotional job. My printer had broken and I didn't have time to replace a new one so I rushed into the store and the associate working (A nice red headed lady) my document was not coming up on her computer after emailing it to the store. She tried for over 10 minutes to get the document to fit on the page but the file was too large. We were able to get it to fit and since it wasn't exactly like it needed to be she calms me my copies. Been here a half dozen or so times and always had the same "meh" customer service. I think because this place is so unfrequented the staff isn't used to actually performing customer service. Whether or not you accept that excuse is up to you. On the other hand, this place is well stocked in various paper. binders, and printer ink, is close to home for me. and has lots of parking. They fix phones, do online orders, and you can even test out office chairs. All in all I would say 3.5 stars since they have always had what I needed but I'll round it up since I have hope and positivity. read more

I recently went to the Rancho Cordova store to print out a funeral program for my Dad. Employee Nikolai went above and beyond to help me. He was kind, knowledgeable and a true model of excellent customer service. This morning, however, I returned to the Rancho Cordova store and had the exact opposite experience. Today is the day of the funeral, and I was going print out a few more funeral programs, just in case I needed them. The clerk in copy services had a very snotty attitude, to say the least. I asked to make some copies, and her response out the gate was "well, we're gonna have to charge you a rush fee, if you want them right now." She acted as if she couldn't be bothered and hardly even made eye contact. I told her I'd just take care of it in self service. Of course, the machine was freezing and not working properly. Never once did she -- or any employee -- come and check on me, and ask whether I needed help. Outrageous, and horrible customer service! Too bad Nikolai wasn't there to save me. Needless to say, I left without making my copies. I will never be back to the Rancho Cordova Staples! read more

I called in to ask if they had any 1 1/2 in diameter round sticker labels for a laser printer in stock and was told by the girl on the phone that they did. (she even put me on a short hold to go check) when I got to the store they didn't have any. wouldn't be a big deal except I drove an hour to get here. which also means an hour back. so really I just wasted gas and time on my trip to the store. definitely don't appreciate being told that they have a product that they don't have as this is exactly what i was trying to avoid by calling in advance. on a side note everyone in the store was nice at least. read more

I really dont like this Staples. They are always out of everything I need. The last time we went in, I wanted to buy a desk. I looked online and found the perfect desk. Called the store to make sure they had one available. Drive to the store 20 minutes later and they tell me the only one they have is the floor model, but I cant have it because they dont sell those unless the item is being discontinued. I also went in to buy a chair a few weeks ago. They had the one I wanted as a floor model, but they didnt have it in stock. Although I know that most of what they have here I can pretty much find anywhere else and for cheaper, I enjoy walking around this store and it is a one stop shop for me. They will most likely have exactly what I am looking for and the employees are very helpful and do not hesitate to provide assistance when I can't find something. This is where I come every summer for workbooks and flashcards that will keep the kids prepared for their next grade. No, I don't have them doing boring homework during the summer but I do have them work on what they have learned and prepare for what is coming every other day. The workbooks are fun and they actually like them. Does it help? Well my youngest son and my daughter are and have been straight A students since they started school (now in 4th and 7th grade). I know it wasn't just the workbooks because they have always had excellent teachers but I make sure to keep up with what they do. I also get many materials there for my middle son. Binders, folders, pencils, stickers and anything that will facilitate whatever lesson I am trying to teach him. This is where I come when I need to build a PECS (Picture Exchange Communication) binder because they have the small binders and the inserts I can cut to fit. So it's a great place for a child with Autism and that's one of the reasons I am there so often. read more

Has to be BY FAR the worst Staples location I've ever been to and just about killed my business with the company. Refused to exchange a defective product with receipt, wouldn't look at the product, didn't spend more than 10 seconds before telling me no. Called Staples corporate, on their suggestion I contacted the Natomas Staples location and spoke with the manager there who was incredibly nice and immediately offered to honor the return/exchange policy, they assigned me an associate to work with over the phone and I was helped right away in the Natmoas location, I even bought an extended warranty on the exchanged item as a thank you spiff for making the process so easy. This store should be re-managed and I'm certainly going to make sure I talk with the regional manager in Roseville in regards to the lack of customer service or care given at this location, every time I come in everyone is tapping on their phones and act like its a huge bother to do anything, I should have just stopped going here a long time ago. Loss prevention got in line behind me at the register and I whipped out my debit card to pay and even asked for some cash back. As I walked away with my new chair, loss prevention said to the clerk... "HE KNEW WE WERE GONNA TAKE HIM" I was labeled as a shoplifter even after I paid. How messed up is that!
