Ok food and disappointing service. Only came here as Mamas is closed on Sunday's. Asked for more coffee, server said "sure, more coffee!" but never came back for it. 10 minutes later she comes back with a check and drops it off so quickly that no time to ask for coffee again. THEN we sit there for 14 minutes waiting for them to get the check. Finally just stand up and stand in the middle of the restaurant in the way until someone takes the check from us. read more

My family and I were in town for a soccer game. The food was not good, portion size was small, prices were crazy high, and the service was mediocre. Stumbled on this place while visiting Ukiah for a weekend and it was exactly what we needed, mostly. We parked half a block away, I opened my handy dandy Yelp app and it was the closest one. AND it had corned beef hash on the menu so my husband was down. We were seated pretty quickly, which was nice. A woman came around and offered coffee. When she came back I asked for "milk or cream" and she pointed to the table (seemingly at a stand of jams and a container of sugar packets) and said "cream?" which of course I didn't understand until WAY later when I saw every other table but ours had a bowl of single-serve creamers. THAT might have been helpful to know. I really just wanted something to put in my coffee, didn't matter milk or cream. Eventually she brought me a small thing of milk which was just fine. Anyway. For some reason, the table that was seated after us (literally 10 minutes AFTER WE HAD ORDERED) got their food before us. Like, a solid 10 minutes before we even got our food. Even though we ordered 10 minutes before they sat down. The kicker? The woman started taking the salt and pepper shakers off our table, and when I looked over, she just said, "oh we're going to steal these." ARE YOU? OKAY. Maybe "please" would have been nice? Or, "hello, kind lady and gentle sir, may we BORROW your salt and pepper shakers as we see that you have not received your food yet and will likely want it back when you do?" Nope. None of that. Bitch. This doesn't reflect at all on the restaurant, but I was hangry at this point and had death in my eyes. Once our food came, I asked our server for salt and pepper (like a normal freaking human being with MANNERS) and she looked at our table, looked at the table that had stolen them, confused, went over and took our S&P back. Thank you to that server for being an angel. So. What'd we order? My husband got the corned beef. It was more like chunks of corned beef with chunks of potatoes. Less of a hash but still super tasty. I don't remember what mine was called... probably just a combo. Two eggs, over medium, with hash browns and sausage patties. The hash browns were PERFECT, but the eggs were a little underdone. I still ate nearly everything on my plate though. Would I come back for the food? Absolutely. As long as my neighbor doesn't try to steal stuff off my table. read more

Only open half a day and a little greasy when it comes to breakfast, the Maple is a straightforward diner that's a bit over praised by locals. A good breakfast is the hardest thing to find on a Sunday morning in a small town. Small towns shut down on Sundays. And though Ukiah is pretty large, compared to, say, the likes of my hometown just 20 miles North, most everything is closed on Sundays. Seriously, in some places enough people still go to church to shut a town down. Oh, there are always still restaurants open, and if you wander around for hours you'll find one of them. The challenge is, which one will you find? The diner that's been open for forty years straight, with the same chef, wait staff and can of lard as a foundation for the entire menu. Or you'll go for the one that looks healthy and turns out to serve nothing but wheat grass & sprouts. If you get lucky, you'll find a place like The Maple. You'd probably drive by it if you didn't know to look for it. We had been sent to The Maple by a local friend, had the address and knew its rough location and still drove by it. It was in the turning around that saved breakfast that rainy Sunday morning. We set our umbrella near the fake fireplace and took our seat at one of the many available tables. The wait staff was friendly, flirting with Little Q and keeping my coffee mug full at every turn. The menu offers a solid selection of American comfort food for breakfast, and the portions are large. Don't look to The Maple for radical new options, but they do the basics right. And on a rainy Sunday morning in Ukiah, a good, solid breakfast was just what we needed. Oh, and bacon. Little Q requires bacon at any breakfast outing. He is, after all, my son. read more

This is a real find in downtown Ukiah...real comfort food with excellent service. I am from New Mexico, and I can tell you that the red and green chile sauce is authentic and very tasty indeed. Quick stop on our Mendocino county beer tour. Small town diner look with the warm friendly small town diner feel. A place where they keep your coffee full and call you hun at the end of every conversation. I didn't think much of the food going in, but was pleasantly surprised. My burger was actually pretty good. This place is a gem, they have a great fruit bowl, not your normal cheap melon and grape fruit bowl at most lower quality places. they have a good sized, diverse menu and all the staff are friendly and knowledgable. I especially love the small blond waitress with curly hair, Melissa. She gives great friendly service and is thorough and considerate. The breakfast burrito is good, they have a couple different options for pancakes & there are often specials with goat cheese in them which makes me happy. An awesome old school and friendly place, with plenty of hungry locals which illustrates that this is a sturdy and well-appreciated fixture in town. We had the french toast combo with egg whites and bacon and my boyfriend enjoyed his chorizo omelet. It was very good and included hash browns and good biscuits. The staff were great and the prices reasonable. This would definitely be on my list of regular great breakfasts when in the area. read more

I'm from a small town-not as small as Ukiah, but my university had more staff and students than my birthplace. There was a wonderful diner in my hometown where the retired men (and teachers like my dad) would gather for breakfast- this place reminded me of that diner when I walked in- very unassuming, simple, clean and friendly. So why write it up when I live in the Bay Area and have a plethora of great brunch places to explore? I was completely surprised!!! I had the BEST veggie omelette I think I have ever experienced! Lots of fillings and cheese, adorned with crispy hash browns that were more like latkes (yummm!!). SOOOOO much food - the best $10 breakfast that left me full all day! Your basic family restaurant. Once upon a time, this would have been a diner, or a "coffee shop." Serves all the basics and does most of them well. Oatmeal tends to be a little runny. A Denver or Western omelet is served with cheese unless you make a big point of telling them not to. Coffee is typical restaurant coffee - in other words, it's not much. OK. This restaurant has been in business FOREVER. It moved, ages ago, from a block closer to the County Courthouse downtown. But I never went there. Seemed like it was for some aged Ukiah crowd I didn't know. But, recently, friends started suggesting we go there. And the ownership changed, not so long ago. So I've been a few times, and I'll go again. Why? Because it is absolutely straightforward and reliable. Not special, but authentic in its own way. The food I've ordered is well prepared and reasonably priced. Standard "independent coffee shop or lunch counter" fare. The tables don't wobble. They're not sticky. The plain black chairs are comfortable enough. Last time I stopped in for a lunch meeting, there were other people I knew in the place, and it was pretty full. I'll go back. I love a good breakfast and this homey place hit the spot. It was almost freezing out so I wanted something hot and hearty. I ended up with a chicken fried steak, hash browns, scrambled eggs and sour dough toast. When in Rome, right? The chicken fried steak tasted very fresh and natural, light even, and the hash browns were perfectly golden. I always ask for my eggs scrambled soft and it's usually hit or miss. This place hit a bullseye, because they know how to make them soft! They were the best restaurant eggs I have ever had. The clincher? I normally don't touch my toast, but I ate it all up. Just moved my daughter up to Ukiah for school. stopped in here on Sunday. Our server was friendly and attentive. Ordered standard ham and eggs. hasbrowns typical, eggs good. Ham steak, look like it was plopped right out of a can and thrown on a grill as it has hash marks. It bugs me that coffee shops can't put a decent piece of ham steak on a plate. The rest of my families meals were ok. I guess I am a ham steak snob. I will continue looking for a good ham steak in the area on our next visit. read more

Cute little place, friendly service and huge portions for reasonable prices. My coffee that I started with was very weak, but luckily I had already had a cup somewhere else that day and wasn't desperate for caffeine. I ordered the biscuit and gravy combo and was not disapointed by all that came with it! The hashbrowns were cooked perfectly, as well as my eggs and bacon. My only gripe is that the gravy didn't have any sausage in it and the biscuit was a bit dry. Other than that, cute little place to have a quick and traditional breakfast. read more
