We came in for a smog inspection on an older vehicle and ran into issues with communication and professionalism. We understand that smog checks on older vehicles are not always quick or painless, and that issues can come up. However, the interaction itself made the experience more frustrating than it needed to be. The gentleman we dealt with was short and somewhat flippant when explaining why the smog could not be completed due to an issue with the catalytic converter. A bit more time and willingness to explain the issue clearly would have gone a long way, rather than assuming the customer should already understand technical details. Because the issue was related to emissions, we asked about the type of repair work that might be needed to address the problem and potentially allow the vehicle to pass smog. We were prepared to move forward, but the response felt dismissive, as though our questions or business were not of interest. The price for the smog itself was reasonable, but the lack of clear communication and the overall tone left us with the impression that we were an inconvenience rather than customers looking for help. Like the vast majority of California motor vehicle owners you hate reading on your DMV vehicle registration form "Smog Certification Required". On top of the registration fees now you have the Smog station charge. If you have to get it done and you live in Modesto you cannot do any better than going to Steve Kosko's Stanislaus Smog and Repair. Being very conveniently located on N. 9th just off Highway 99 you're only minutes away regardless of where you live in the Modesto area. Steve's price is more than reasonable, he's very efficient and a quite personable young man. If you've got to have it done it's better if it is a somewhat enjoyable experience. I highly recommend Steve's shop to anyone needing a Smog Certification. While I did not require the more indepth STAR Smog Certification I "believe" Stanislaus Smog and Repair is also a STAR station. I recently had work done on a 1971 C3 Corvette, Steve took the car in after a 3rd party brought it to Steve and it sat due to availability of parts and some miscommunication. Steve and I were brought together by a 3rd party , once Steve and I started working together, the parts were delivered to the shop and Steve (being a stand up guy) did his best and was able to hit a deadline set by the paint shop . He replaced 2 trailing arms and did a lot of work to the driveline ! During this time , it was apparent that the brake system needed a lot of work ! I asked Steve if he could hit another deadline for me with getting the brakes completed by the following Saturday, Steve was upfront and said he doubted it but would do his best ! Well not only did Steve accomplish getting 2 new rotors and 4 calipers and brake lines in time .... he was also able to complete the task 1 day ahead of schedule!!! Steve is a throwback to an era when men gave their word because it was their bond and deals were done on a handshake!! Steve, thanks for all your hard work!! I came by the shop at 5:15 45 minutes before closing the owner sad around looking at a customers car took my paperwork in and then at 5:30 grilled me and gave me an attitude asking if I can come earlier and why they come so late. I had even called earlier and they didn't answer their phone and I drove over and was there by 5:10 PM. Michael apparently was a mechanic teacher at some point, therefore his explanation of problem and preventative measure was appreciated in laymen terms. Fast in getting it started and completing same day for brakes, rotors, and leaking hose somewhere. YOUR ANSWER IS A LYE!!!!! My car passed all the tests the only it did not passed was the VISUAL. That means your option to pass it or not. You decided not to pass it, maybe you wanted $omething el$e!!! The referee said "yes I have some people failed by these place I'll have to talk to them". He asked me way they failed me, he said it is a decision of the technician, and he did not understand why it failed, there was no smoke but only some moisture but it is normal on american cars, and it PASS without any problem. We visited the Stanislaus Smog here in Modesto, Ca. We went to one last year that were very rude so we drove 10 extra miles to give this one a try. We have an AZ. license plate and he said he wasn't sure if this would be OK but we told him to go ahead with the test. Alexis Gonzalez couldn't have been nicer.
