Ive been seeing Dr Lisa Lo for 3 years now and I love her. I prefer to wear a lower prescription than 20/20 (bc it can give me a headache) and she understood that and patiently worked with me to find a prescription that worked well. She then assessed me again for separate reading/computer glasses. While other drs have been strict about exactly what my prescription should be, I feel that she offers some flexibility to accommodate what I am comfortable with and I appreciate that. Recently I became interested in color contacts and she gave me a bunch to try and ordered some free trials for me too. We've been corresponding back and forth about it and I feel that most drs will not not directly correspond back and forth like that but she is hands-on and I appreciate her responsive and the fact that we can use email (as that works much better for me than phone). Dr. Lisa Lo at Standard Optometry was amazing with my three kids (ages 9, 6, and 4)! She was incredibly patient and used fun language to explain everything during their eye exams. The office was warm and welcoming. They also received a small toy to take with them for being respectful and behaving after the exams. The support staff was friendly and helpful, making the experience stress-free. Dr. Lisa Lo thoroughly examined their eyes and explained everything clearly to my wife and I as well as to the kids. Great place to get your eyes checked out. My husband finally needed to get his eyes checked & my dad reminded me of this place. We got an appointment right away & the eye exam was $59 without insurance, a great deal! The eye exam was fairly quick & thorough according to the hubs. They have a great variety of frames ranging from $49 to $300+. We were able to pickup his glasses the next day since they already had the lenses. I went to this place for prescription glasses. The Optometrist tested my eyes and told me I could get either 1.75 or 2.5 magnification. I asked for 2.0 because i use a 2.0 mag cheap glasses available at Pharmacies. I was told that was not an option. So I got the 1.75's. But after I got it it's not strong enough. So I went back and see if I can get them stronger one even with . Answer was "You have to pay another full price.". I use the cheap glasses with 1.75 mag and have this set of $250 1.75 glasses that are useless to me. As for me I think they don't know what they are doing. Obviously customer satisfaction is not high on their list. To bad i can't give Zero Stars. read more

This is our second year as a return customer. I had great experiences here with Standard Optometry. Dr. Lo is very patient and experienced. I previously got a prescription from the optometry down the street (over priced) in Los Altos which gave me a headache. The prescription Dr. Lo gave me was much better! Wow, what a great place! I had dropped my prescription sunglasses in the Berkeley marina after someone borrowed them to fix a sailboat (!?!) and was sick of constantly squinting without my aviators. Given my budget, I looked up all the deals on Groupon and LivingSocial (etc.) I could find and visited "Site for Sore Eyes" (Terrible service, dirty store, overpriced frames, scammish deal) and "For Eyes" (much better service, clean store, but their groupon has special terms and conditions that make you pay at least $80 at a minimum) in Berkeley. The last place left was Standard Optometry with a Living Social deal that gave me $150 worth of credit for $20. Biting the bullet, I drove down to south bay to Standard Optometry and I'm so happy I went! The sales assistant was reallllly patient and extremely helpful. I told her straight from the start that I had a LivingSocial voucher and that I wanted to cheapest pair possible. She found me all of the $49 frames and waited as I tried each of them on. They all looked terrible on me and so she and Dr. Lo looked all around the store and suggested that I try the non-sunglass frames. The store itself is really well-lit, well-stocked, clean, tidy, and there are lots of glasses styles. There were plenty of great options and even though it was 5:15pm (and they closed at 5pm), the sales assistant was really friendly and laughed a lot with us as I tried on all the cheapie pairs. It was actually difficult to decide because there were quite a few nice looking pairs! (Even though there is a good selection of cheap pairs, there are also quite a few really nice looking designer pairs too...). She never tried a hard sell and was really gracious about finding the most affordable and aesthetically pleasing pair for me. Dr. Lo came by and suggested helpful tips and also helped us understand the price structure. She was really friendly and understanding of my budget while not sacrificing style! I paid $23 for all this: $49 for frames $99 for single vision lenses $25 for tinting of lenses (to make them sunglasses) + taxes !!!! So, if I didn't want to get sunglasses but wanted to get prescription glasses, I could have paid $20!!! That folks, is amazing. Okay, but the people here are awesome, so spend as much money as you can in the store. Also, as we were leaving Dr. Lo asked us if we wanted cupcakes. I'm still thinking about those cupcakes, because they were SO good! Who makes Speculoos flavored cupcakes!? She could totally moonlight as a master cupcaker. In sum: Go here. I've filled my prescription for glasses here for two years now. Dr. Lo is very detail oriented when it comes to your eyes and justly so. During my first visit she spent a lot of time looking into the back of my retina. When she found that something looked wrong she recommended me to a retinal diagnostic center to make sure I didn't have retinal detachment. She asked about bio debris and used all of her tools to check my eyes. When she thought she found the right prescription for me (from the big hand that comes out from the wall) she had me wear these custom glasses that had my particular prescription. In the past my former optometrists never had me do this. I walked around in them and when I felt dizzy she would put different lenses into the glasses until I felt comfortable. When it came to choosing glasses frames she brought out many pairs for me to try on. I don't have much of a bridge on my nose so I need frames with nose pads and she had plenty of those. I tend to get more high end frames and her optometry office had many to choose from. Any who she's great and she's fun to talk to. I got my glasses today and she offered me a banana cream cupcake. Come in on Saturdays to try her baked goods! They are yummy! Maybe Dr. Lo should sell cupcakes AND glasses! read more

Went in for an out-of-pocket contact lens exam--my first time wearing contacts. I don't know if this was in line with their usual prices or if I simply lucked out, but I got the whole thing done for an incredible (discounted) price of $109, which included glasses and contacts prescriptions, contacts training, an eye health exam, a follow-up appointment, and 10 pairs of samples. (I wanted to try out two different brands, and there were 5 pairs in each sample set.) This was the best deal by far out of all the places I looked at in the Mountain View and San Francisco areas, including the two Costcos. Dr. Lo was friendly and attentive, explained everything very clearly, and carefully addressed all my concerns. Walked out with my first pair of contacts after about 45 minutes and couldn't be happier! read more

All of their staffs are very friendly and knows their clients by name. Kind of costly but they do discuss about alternative methods of payment besides insurance options. I've been see-ing optometrists/wearing glasses for decades, and Dr Lo is by far the most attentive, caring and patient optometrist I've ever seen. Appointments are on time, and office hours are very silicon valley friendly (i.e., opened wkends / lunch hrs / early evenings). Eye examinations starts w/ the automated machine test performed by her staff. This is followed by a detailed examination by Dr Lo including the pupil dilation test. Dr Lo even lets you split up the dilation exam (where you get eye drops and blurry vision for a few hrs) for a separate visit at your convenience. Dr Lo's office isn't in the most convenient or prime real estate location. However, compared to Optometrists at Castro street, Dr Lo prices are very reasonable, and even affordable to poor grad students w/o insurance. I didn't have to choose between good eyesight vs. eating potatoes everyday for the next 3 months. Visa is also accepted. Dr Lo's staff are equally friendly, caring and patient as well. A business is only as good as its employees and she has an excellent support staff, I hope Dr Lo gives them a big Christmas bonuses and/or treats them often to lunch ;) If there was anything negative about Dr Lo's office, its the lack of bike racks for poor grad students w/o cars. FYI, Safeway and Whole Foods are 2-3 mins walking distance away and both have good bike racks. read more

FASTEST service I've seen! I had an emergency trip scheduled for Asia, and needed glasses FAST. (I broke my previous pair and had to put them together with crazy glue - you know the story...) I looked for optometrists around my office and found Standard from Yelp. I called them on Monday, made appointment for Tuesday, (they are closed on Wednesday), paid (over a call with my FSA card) on Thursday around noon, and received call Thursday afternoon saying that my glasses are ready for pickup. These bozos lost my appointment I arrived and they claimed to have no knowledge of it, not even the woman who booked it for me. Well, I waited around for an hour, as they said the Dr. could fit me in at noon. I was taken on time, and Johnny did a quick check of my peripheral vision and prescription range. He was completely professional, courteous and friendly. He is A++. Dr. Lo examined my eyes after that, doing a few quick looks inside my eyes, and spending most of the time optimizing my near and far vision. She was patient, personable and very honest and open, but I'm not so sure she did a thorough exam, compared to Sunnyvale Optometry where I've been before. I did receive the prescriptions needed, a trial pair of lenses to test out, and assurance they would call me when a pair of other lenses came in. I came in for an appointment made on the same day. Dr. Lisa Lo was very friendly and there was no wait. Receptionist was also very nice and not pushy. I had an eyeglasses exam fully covered by insurance, and they asked about extra contact lens exam and whether I wanted new glasses. I declined both offers and they were still very nice about it, and wrote the prescription before I even asked for it. I asked lots of questions about my eyes and Dr. Lo was patient and knowledgeable. Do not go here if you want quality glasses. After getting glasses here I felt my eyesight was getting worse. I went to my doctor and he measured my glasses and told me the astigmatism in the right and left eye were completely wrong! I called them to check up on this and apparently they had swapped the left and the right eye astigmatism. I tried to get my benefits reenacted so I could get my glasses redone at another better location, but I had a very bad experience with the doctor. First, she didn't understand what I was saying and told me that I should expect imprecision on the cylinder in the glasses. She said it is fine if it is 5ish degrees off. That is not what you want to hear from a place making your glasses. Then after understanding that they simply messed up my astigmatism prescription on the glasses, she said it was too late to issue a refund, and in general they do not do any refunds. This is very unfair, since a simple check on their side after getting the glasses back from the lab would have allowed them to discover this error. The error is completely the fault of Standard Optometry. She said she could redo the glasses but I didn't want to get my glasses redone at a place that I no longer trust. I have been using their glasses with the incorrect prescription for over a year now. Even after knowing this, neither the doctor or staff EVER apologized about getting my glasses prescription incorrect. They did not sound apologetic or seem to care at all. Instead they tried to shift the blame away from themselves saying "they want to check the glasses" (even though my doctor already measured it) and "eyesight changes over time" and "it's ok to be imprecise on some measurements." Going back I read some other reviews of this place on Google and it seems like there's a pattern of poor quality glasses made here. This is really sad because my previous experience with the staff here was pleasant and I felt they had a decent frame selection. However I care about my eyes and no longer trust this place to deliver me quality lenses, or to own up to their own mistakes and issue me a refund when they clearly made a mistake on their side. I don't recommend anyone to get their lenses done here. Stay away if you want to protect your eyes. read more

Dr. Lo is excellent at what she does. She listens to the patient's needs and concerns and really takes her time to do a thorough examination. I went in to get a new contacts prescription but ended up getting a full eye examination as well. If you come in with lots of questions, she always has an answer and is willing to explain different options for you or what she thinks is best. She recommended a new kind of contacts for me because I had problems with dry eyes. Also, she gave me two different sets of rebates for the contacts giving me a great deal! I have used Standard Optometry on several occasions and have been 100% happy with their service and professionalism. On the first occasion, I bought some inexpensive glasses to replace some that I had lost. I was in a big time crunch in between two travel dates and they were able to put lenses in the glasses within 24 hours. On another occasion I bought some high-end designer glasses and found their pricing to be excellent compared to the competition. My children have enjoyed the cupcakes that they offer (I think on Wednesdays). One of the Optometrists makes them for their customers. I signed up on yelp for the first time to write a review for this place. The fact that there are so many 5 star reviews already is no surprise at all. They offer great discounts and provide wonderful customer service. I came in from Santa Cruz two years in a row to be examined by Dr. Lo and I will be coming back up next year as well (or sooner if my dog chews up my glasses again). They realized I was from out of town with no glasses, and they put the lenses in the frames right away even though they were very busy. They did it so fast, I didn't even get halfway through my lunch before they called and said I could pick them up.
