Wow I can't believe that this place is rated this highly. Maybe London doesn't have decent Indian food, because if this place is rated 4.6, wow. We had tikka masala and garlic naan and onion bhagi. The tikka was horrible. It seriously tasted like Campbell's soup with 7 small pieces of chicken in it. Completely tasteless. Zero spice, not heat, spice. Do they not know what Indian spices are? The naan was dry and tasteless, and we had garlic naan. Zero garlic flavour at all. The onion bhajee dish was also tasteless and greazy. If I wasn't so upset at having to eat such horrible food I would be laughing at the fact they had a sign saying the chef had received some top award! Please stay away in fact leave this area as fast as you can and go eat some other cuisine in London. The food here was okay. Not that good and not that bad. The starters were pretty good, although a tad cold. However I found the curries to be quite bland, especially the vegetable one. I would def never recommend that. The savior of the meal would have to be the naan. It was soft and fluffy and I could have eaten a basket of that myself. Came out to Brick Lane street to get some authentic Indian food. Decided on this place after receiving the recommendation from a local shopkeeper. (I was in the dark without any Wifi to do my research). The place was nearly empty when I entered, which should have been a sign. Not looking to be too experimental, I ordered the classic Chicken Tikka Marsala. After waiting 30 minutes to get, they brought me the wrong dish. I waited another 10 minutes to get the right one while my rice and naan got colder. Although the chicken was tender, the dish lacked sufficient flavor and was one dimensionally sweet. The portion size was also somewhat small (which in this case I didn't mind). I've had a lot of Chicken Tikka Marsala in my life and this ranks towards the bottom of those experiences. Tips: do research before coming out; prepare to be pressured by restaurant peddlers standing outside their respective entrances (with promises of larger portions, bigger discounts, and better food than the competition). read more

Came here wanting a nice Indian meal and noticed this restaurants review status was at 4 stars and, they took tastecard at Christmas time. Result right..??? We had a relatively early booking so fairly empty when we arrived but did quickly start to fill up. Food wise I ordered KAKRA PURI for starters described as 'Lightly spiced crab meat infused with shallots and cilantro.Served on a snap fried puffed bread'. What arrived was spiced crab meat which, was a little wet but nice however, there was no 'puffed bread'. I received a doughy pancake which was slightly under cooked in the middle. No snap puff which was disappointing as I wanted something light for starters not a thick pancake. I had ordered a paratha with my main meal again this was disappointing. This just seemed to be a larger version of my first 'pancake'. There were no flaky layers but a heavy doughy paratha which you could see was undercooked in the middle. Staff were pleasant enough but left feeling this was not one of the best, reasonably priced' Indians I've been to and not sure that I would opt to go back. read more

We came after reading many reviews and walking twice through the street with more than 50 restaurants serving all most same type of Indian typical food. #1. There are few other restaurants with same name making it confusing as to which is the real balti restaurant. After few attempts we found this one which is reviewed as top 5 !! ( not reliable reviews) didn't find it good enough. #2. Any curry you order will be similar no different other than name being it Himalayan chicken or chicken tikka Masala or any other in red curry typical not authentic. 3#. Not fresh food. Samosa(lamb) was soggy, chicken curry not good, naan was in rubbery and unchewable. Rice was okay. But food overall Yuk not eating here again. 4#. Poor service - food took a long time to come to the table. Water without ice, no chutney with samosa. No onions salad etc. Servers were kind and poor but not trained well. We just ate at Dishoom and was able to compare the food with here it's a huge difference in food, taste, service. Even though we had to wait for hour and half in line at the dishoom restaurant but was worth the wait !! I am a fan of Indian food eating out but I will not come back here in this life. read more

Brick Lane - a mecca for curry houses. As you make your way from one end to the other, there is no shortage of smiling faces grabbing your attention with promises of the best deal, the best curry, family owned restaurants, authentic dishes and more. It is hard to make the call for the right one. I normally go for the ones requiring the least sales effort and with bums on seats, as there is nothing more off putting than an empty restaurant. Enter tastecard London which has its fair share of Indian partners offering either 2 for 1 or 50% off food on this famous curry street. Having scanned through the tastecard reviews and our old friend Tripadvsior, the Standard Balti House stood out for our weekend lunch. There are a couple of things which are appealing about this place. Firstly, the welcome, with friendly guys who do not give you that dreaded look when you say the word "tastecard". All are welcome with open arms and that is certainly a bonus. The interior, whilst still ethnic, the style is quite contemporary and muted, without the garish colours and prints which can normally frequent such establishments. An international crowd made up of couples, lone diners and what appeared to be adult students from an international school also filled out the spot. Where the menu is concerned, I have my favourites and I tend not to stray. This is bad, as I should experiment now and then. That is why it is good to have a dining partner, as they can bring the newbie dishes to the table for reviews such as these. All your favourite dishes are on the menu, 5 to 8 different blends of cooking sauces with either prawn, chicken, veg or lamb. Our starters were shared poppadoms with the usual dips of mint sauce, mango chutney, seasoned onions and chilli. For the main feature, I opted for my old favourite, chicken rogan josh, which was served slightly different here. Normally it is with large stewed tomatoes, but this had smaller cherry tomatoes. Luckily this did not impact the taste I am used to. I had a side of "ladies fingers" which is okra chopped finely, fried with curry spices and onions. We shared a pilau rice and cheese nan bread. My companion had chicken vindaloo which hello, is one of the spiciest dishes on the menu. I feared for him, but he said this was his thing, he likes spice. There was a slight blush in his face, but he enjoyed it. I of course had to give it a little try, so I cautiously dipped my nan bread in the sauce. Nope, full on spicy food is not my thing. I love this place. It has a combination of comfort, attentiveness, friendliness, familiarity and of course, good food. I will venture here again and yes, I will try a different dish because I felt comfortable enough at the Standard Balti House to do so. Comparing to other places in Bricklane serving similar type of cuisine I found this restaurant pleasantly clean and nicely decorated. The lunch deal bargained was a starter +main+beer/wine for £10 per person which was great taking into consideration that the food was well prepared and really tasty. read more

I really like this place... just the right amount of spice and flavor in all of the food. The appetizers, main dishes with curry were all so so good. Was going for an early dinner and we were latched onto by one of the gazillion restaurant peddlers up and down Brick Lane. Against our better judgement (I'd read mixed reviews before agreeing to go in), we caved and agreed to eat there under the false promise of great, tasty Indian food for a cheap price (that bit was true, to be fair). I was not impressed. Service came without the smile and our waiter had a permanent FML expression on his face. The starters were equally gloomy. The onion bhajis' main ingredient seemed to be oil rather than actual onion and the vegetable samosas were edible, but tiny and bland. The main course was marginally better - I ordered a chicken dopiaza - as the portion was decent and it tasted fine, but it didn't really taste like the dopiaza that I know and love. Wow... is pretty much all I can say... I didn't think it possible, as I'm in love with Indian cuisine and could bathe in tikka masala daily, but I actually found a place where I almost didn't like a single dish! I can honestly say, this is the wosrt Indian place I have been to in the history of my food-binging-like-a-ninja existence! Please allow me to elaborate. I was with 3 Indian food virgins, who didn't even know the tantric pleasures of that moment when flaky meets exotic spices when first biting into a crispy veggie somasa. I wanted to take them to an Indian restaurant to know such pleasures and being new to London, I don't have a list of places I like yet. Since Shoreditch seems to have many Indian eateries, I thought it might be a good idea to take them here. Since we were a group of 8, I used Open Table to find some place with decent reviews. What could go wrong??? First, of course ordered somasas, but they weren't the huge pyramid shaped ones which I was hoping to showcase to my masala virgin friends. Oh no, instead, we got the flat ones that were ok in flavour, but lacking in lustful volume. We also got papadum, but it was a strange kind with little flavour and I think they were fried??? Of course, chutney is a neccessity to add some fun and flavour to the papadums, but the chutneys were so sweet, I could barely eat it. This was only a prelude of what was to come.... 6 out of 7 dishes, including standards such as Tikka Masala which I use to measure up Indian places, were so sweet that I wasn't sure if I had mistaken this restaurant for a dessert place or an actual dinner place. And since they were all super sweet, they pretty much tasted the same. Various shades of yellows, reds and oranges all tasted like sweet condensed milk. Not even dipping the naan (which was nice and crispy) could fix the flavours. Towards the end of the night, some people barely ate so we had to ask for some cooked meat with no sauce. The servers were very accommodating and friendly. We even got a free bottle of wine at the end of the night (probably for spending more than £200) so I can't give 1 star. But I really don't recommend this place to lovers of Indian cuisine and I was super embarrassed and had to apologize to my masala virgin friends. I only hope I haven't tainted their view of Indian food forever!!! read more

We headed here in search of balti specifically, and we weren't disappointed. On a Tuesday night it was quiet and peaceful, although service (as typical of Brick Lane) was somewhat pushy. We had papadums with various chutneys, the mixed veggie started which was just okay, and two baltis: chicken, and prawn. These were served on white ceramic dishes rather than traditional copper bowls, adding a touch of fancy. Cold Kingfisher beer on draft was highly refreshing. Downside: on the night we visited the credit card machine was "not working," so we were sent across the street to a cash machine. read more

I went here for a work lunch, and there were 20 of us in total. The restaurant was completely empty, and during the 2 hours we were there they had no other customers, which was quite worrying, but I guess Thursday lunchtime is a very slow period for Brick Lane restaurants. As a big group we each ordered different curries to share, with rice and naan. The curries were a bit on the oily side, but they tasted good, although some were a bit bland the cream based ones had a bit too much cream in them. Serving sizes were quite big, with plenty of meat and veg in the curry instead of just sauce. I recommend ordering the mushroom rice as they were terrific. The naan breads were standard, with some of the slightly burnt, so best avoided. As usual, they served Kingfisher and Cobra beer, although make sure you ask for a small if you want a pint otherwise they automatically give you a large (660ml) bottle! Pricewise it came up to £14 per person (after 10% discount, a standard if you ask on arrival) for quite a filling meal, but a tad expensive I would say for the highly competitive area of Brick Lane. Given the multitude of restaurants there, I would definitely not be trying this place again, but overall the quality was decent. read more

Amazing Bangladeshi food! I had the Chicken Dupiaza spicy and my husband had the Balti Chicken Vindaloo Spicy. Did not disappoint! It was lunch so we didn't get any sides. Next time. Really want to try the Fal as we like extreme hot. Have to come back as the staff and owner were very friendly and took great care of us!! Does exactly what it says on the tin. If you're looking for a standard curry for a standard price then this is certainly above average, and a lot better than a lot of the places on brick lane. My Wife and I had lunch here on a Sunday, when the Brick Lane Market was rocking. We chose it for the reviews and were a bit concerned when we were the only diners there. We discovered that there was no need to be concerned, as everything was amazing. The service was top notch and the food was some of the best Indian I've ever had. I tasted my Wife's Chicken Dupiaza when it came, and loved it. A great blend of flavors, tender chicken Tikka, overall very tasty and well worth eating. My Balti Chicken Vindaloo trumped it, absolutely fantastic! And the Naan was so good we ordered another one to go with the take away leftovers. I can't wait until lunch tomorrow. After a busy day trying on leather jackets and boots, my wife and I adjourned here for dinner. What a lovely meal in a very pleasant setting. The staff were very friendly and the wait for the food was very short. It is now several hours later and we are still full up. In my humble opinion, this is one of the best restaurants on Brick Lane. Having been there about 5 or 6 times, I am always greeted with a warm welcome and complimentary poppadums. The service is amazing and the food even better. For a tenner or less, I always manage to get an exceptional curry and a large Cobra. What could be better? I am a big fan of their creamier dishes (e.g. chicken tikka massala and chicken korma) but have also had their meat tali which was incredible value for money- could definitely have been shared as it was enormous! The pens they give you at the end of the meal are complimentary- I have had many strange looks given to me on occasions when I have used these pens to sign important documents! Quite a useful thing to have with you though! Definitely worth a visit! read more

My curry house of choice in Brick Lane. There are many curry houses here, all competing for your competition (as you will discover as you walk down Brick Lane on any evening!) The Standard is tried and tesred; staff are always friendly and courteous and the atmosphere is classy without being pretentious. The curry is fantastic; the puppodoms are always crisp and served with a fine selection of accompaniments (the lime pickle is good!) The rice has an aromatic flavour to it and a variety of desserts round off a wonderful meal every time. Head for the Standard and prepare to be converted - you won't want to go anywhere else on Brick Lane! read more
