People from Davis must put up with these prices in exchange for what you see in the picture, but anywhere else you get an actual full meal for a street vendor (which this is) for this price. Really cute place and nice family. It was nice to sit outside drinking hot tea and watching the owner cooking lamb kabobs. The bean and and noodle soup was really good. We ordered the lamb kabob sandwich and chicken salad sandwich. The sandwiches needed more seasoning or a spicy sauce, or both. read more

Absolutely authentic food and atmosphere. It reminded me of some happy months I spent one summer back in the 70s in Iran! This is a place that could be a gathering place, and the food is out of this world. All kinds of great sandwiches kebab, eggplant, vegetable soufflé, cool delicious potato salad. Last time I was there they had an amazing vegetable soup with noodles. If I have a favorite cuisine, it's delicious, fresh, well-prepared street food, and I've enjoyed street food all over this world. I almost never give 5-star ratings, but Stand Up Kabob gets one because sometimes in this life we are fortunate to feel loved and appreciated when we go to experience a great street food stand. I've felt that love all over the world. I seek it out - like a street food junkie. Stand Up Kabob reminded me of many of my favorites - from the goofy hand-made sign on the road that allowed us to find the place, to the skillfully handmade wood-fired BBQ where skewers of meat were cooking, to the limited menu (illustrated by pictures with hand-written scrawl), to the delightfully friendly greeting from someone really happy we decided to eat there. And this was in Davis? If I'm going to be honest as reviewer, I'll have to admit I loved this place before I even ordered. Naturally, we were eager to try the kabobs - skewered lamb served w rice and grilled tomato. (No chicken that day.) The lamb was kofta style - ground w herbs and spices and then fashioned on a skewer to be cooked over wood. Yeah. Delicious. The rice was perfect, and the charred tomato a perfect addition. My sweet wife would have liked some yogurt sauce or tzatziki with it, but I was good with the way it was. We also tried a tomato and cucumber salad which was fresh, and potent. I happen to like onions, so I loved the salad, too. Rice pudding gave us a nice smooth landing -- light and fluffy with a thread of saffron - an appreciated albeit cosmetic touch, and the perfect street food metaphor -- where you're noticing that the care that goes into your food is as good as any Michelin star restaurant, all the while some cheesy suited used car salesman is working his magic nearby and cars whiz by on the I-80. If you love great street food as I do, you'll actually care for Stand Up Kabob the way I do. These folks are obviously trying to make the same delicious food from home that THEY love ... and it shows. And if you don't love street food, then there's a Taco Bell down the street. read more

Highly recommend this little out of the way spot. Food is very authentic, prepared with care, and tasty. I've sampled a good selection of the menu and never really been disappointed (some thing better than others or just more familiar to my palette) but the kabobs are by far my favorite. The kookoo is a good vegetarian option. I always get a side of yogurt (daria) and the shirazi salad. Prices are very fair and i think are a great value (especially compared to comparable places in davis). Couple things to note. They have very limited hours (Fridays only at the time of posting) so check their site. They are located adjacent to an automobile repair shop so just be aware of this when you arrive. They have a fine outdoor dinning area but I usually get takeout. read more

Here's the deal: this restaurant is not some well oiled machine business like you're used to eating at. It's literally run by a Persian dude who does it as a hobby with his family. The guy is NOT a restaurant owner. Because of that, there's errors and inefficiency. He also hasn't optimized things to bring down costs which is why the prices are a bit high, for those of you that don't understand how a business works. BUT the result of all of this is incredibly delicious and authentic Persian food, which is very hard to find. The vast majority of Persian restaurants you will go to are UTTER CRAP. Now whether you have the discernment to tell the difference between crap and quality is a different story, and maybe, if you don't, you should stick to eating the kabob at village pizza and grill (not trying to knock village, but let's face it, Persian cuisine is not their strong suit) or one of those spots in Sacramento. However, if you want to get blown away by flavors that you've only experienced from your favorite uncle's chelo kabob, this spot will nurture your soul. read more

Okay this place is amazing!!!! I got the chicken plate with a side of the cucumber mint yogurt to use as a sauce in the plate. The chicken is grilled to perfection. So flavorful, but the sauce ties it all together. Service was great, super friendly. Great outdoor seating. 100% recommend. Arguably one of Davis's best restaurants. read more

Really tasty food but operations need improvement. Put in a phone order, was told it would be ready in an hour. Arrived 1:20 later and had to wait another 45 min with wife and son sitting in car. Suggestion would be allow pre pay online and have customers just come and pick up order and not have to wait in the same line as customers placing orders. Also, price points started off good, but have significantly jumped to the point where I consider this restaurant expensive relative to portion size. read more

I was looking for a place to grab some food for a potluck, because I didn't have time to cook a dish. The place was a "hole in the wall", and shared the building with a car dealership. The place had an outdoor grill built into the wall. I ordered their kabab sandwiches, and my friends loved them.
