History
Established in 2005.
During the Greece Revolution in 1821 a legend was born. For more than a century, the family legend of Stamatopoulos has been told and retold. Captured by the Ottoman Turks, he was chained to a stone wall and faced imminent death. By miracle Stamatopoulos broke the chain and escaped. That legend has sustained subsequent generations whenever times were tough. Konstantino Kapiniaris (Gus), the great-great-grandson of Stamatopoulos, holds tight to the legend. Having conquered innumerable hardships, he attributes success to perseverance held together by a dream and goals. In the village of Koroni, Greece, Konstantino (Gus) learned to make wine at the knees of his father and grandfather. When Konstantino (Gus) was a little boy, his father told him that no matter where he was or where he had been, to make wine to honor the family and not to forget Stama. Konstantino(Gus) left Greece in 1959 with a dream in his soul. It took nearly 30 back breaking years, but Gus never forgot.
Meet the Business Owner: Gus K.
Konstantino (Gus) Kapiniaris emigrated from Greece in 1959 from a fishing village on the southern tip of Greece, Koroni. In the 1980s he began to purchase his first
Vineyards in Lodi, California. The Kapiniaris family now holds a little over 200 acres of premium wine grapes in the Lodi appellation consisting of Old Vine Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc. Until 2002 the Kapiniaris family was selling their fruit to other wineries. With the 2003 harvest, the Kapiniaris family kept a portion of their fruit, and produced their first wine in 2005, which opened the doors from Kapiniaris Vineyards to Stama Winery. Both entities belong to the family. Prior from emigrating from Greece, Konstantino's father had made the request to his son to try to bring back the original family name, Stamatopoulos. Konstantino Kapiniaris decided to name the new winery Stama, in order to honor his father's wishes.
