Dinner at Stagecoach Tavern was utter chaos. The singular star is dedicated to the bartender & the burger my partner received. We came to RBL for a very specific concert. When we reserved our room, we purchased the dinner package, which included a three course dinner at Stagecoach Tavern. The website stated that gratuity was included in the package because "we have raised our prices to provide better wages for our staff." With the lack of a front desk & seemingly no internal system for keeping track of guests, this "package" proved to be difficult & frustrating to redeem. The staff didn't seem to to know about our 6:45 dinner reservation, let alone our dinner package. But eventually we were led to a table where we sat & waited. & waited. We waited so long, without anyone visiting our table to even take our drink order, that we had time to notice some disturbing things around us. 1. Lipstick stains on the cloth napkins. 2. Lipstick gunk on the water glasses. 3. Flies buzzing around everywhere. 4. Other patrons looking annoyed & restless. About 15 minutes into our sit, another couple was led to a table next to us. Then the server returned to take their drink order. Then they received their drinks. Then they ordered food. ... All before anyone spoke to us. At one point, we made note that they might know the owner. In that case, how embarrassing for Stagecoach Tavern to have a dining room full of restless guests & continuing to only dote on the customers they know personally. Bad practice. Finally, after about almost an hour of sitting, a very stressed bartender noticed us. He stopped to take our drink order, despite our table being very obviously out of his jurisdiction. He was out of breath & agitated, so we didn't think it was a good time to bring up our alleged "package." We just ordered "whatever can be made quickly," since we had a concert to get to. My partner ordered the burger. I ordered the fried fish. He was quickly on his way. Then the special table next to us received their food. Our table was still empty, except for the lipstick stained napkins, the lipstick gunked water glasses, & the flies. There was a table of 3 near us that had been already sitting when we arrived at Stagecoach Tavern. They were restless & clearly upset. When they finally got a chance, they flagged down the elusive server (who had still not visited our table) to ask for their food to-go. They couldn't wait any longer. We watched in horror as the server gave no explanation, no apology, & no discount to the table of 3 that was requesting their "fine dining" to-go because it was taking so long. After speaking with the table of 3, the server finally came to our table. It had been OVER an HOUR since we had been sat. She didn't realize that the bartender had been by, so she asked us what she could get us to drink. We told her that we didn't need to order anything, as we had already spoken with the bartender. I did request replacement water glasses, though. We also asked if our two entrees could be covered by our dinner "package" because we didn't have the time to wait for a three-course meal at this point. She said no. We asked her to check with a manager. The VIP table next to us had completely finished their meal & were waiting for the check, at this time. We didn't hear back from her & didn't receive new water glasses. Eventually, our drinks & food were dropped at our table by a member of the kitchen staff. My partner said the burger was phenomenal. The fried fish dish was a nice medley of flavors. I particularly enjoyed the unique blueberry/dill combination. It was, unfortunately, tedious to eat & not enough food. I knew I would still be hungry, but we certainly didn't have the time or patience to order anything else. The concert was due to begin at any moment, so I left the tavern to head over to the venue, leaving my partner with the unsavory job of settling the bill (thank you, love you.) Apparently they did eventually call it a wash, as our two drinks & two entrees tallied up to a total that was far less than what the dinner package could potentially include. My partner left a $20 bill on the bar for the bartender. After the fact, we were charged $185 for the dinner package that was supposed to be included in our room reservation. They included a $24 restaurant gratuity charge which really tied my knickers in a knot, considering their spiel about raising staff pay & included gratuity. Even if you build your own three course dinner by ordering the most expensive starter, entree, & dessert off the menu, you still won't tally up a $185 bill. The dinner package is a scam. After repeated attempts to contact their customer service (again, there's no front desk) we finally received a refund for the dinner package. What a disaster. Where is management? read more

An absolute fabulous dining experience. From being greeted by a gracious host to engaging with a delightful bartender, there is absolutely no down points to the Stagecoach Tavern. This unique and quaint respite in Sheffield provides both an indoor and outdoor relaxing food and drink experience. It was too cold to go outdoors, but they did have a fire pit going in case one wanted to brave the elements. Inside the restaurant you will experience a variety of different seating choices. From booths to tables to private fireplace options, you could go back again and again without sitting in a cookie-cutter type table. The inside is decorated with a variety of historic stagecoach memorabilia. Very cool. Onto the food. Dining started out with the sourdough basket appetizer. Fresh toasted sourdough bread with a buttery garlic side cup is a solid opener choice. You get plenty of bread for two or more to share. The shrimp and scallop risotto main entrée was terrific even the risotto critic couldn't argue. Fairly good sized with a respectable amount of both shrimp and scallops. The risotto had a nice Parmesan topping with a touch of lemon. Now, the Chick lien pot pie was outstanding! A sweet pastry topping kicks this decadent special. Lots of flavor in every spoonful. They've got a fantastic talented bartender, who has some great drink suggestions that might tempt you to go off menu. read more

We had dinner here while at the Race Brook Lodge for a concert we were seeing in their barn. We arrived for our reservation at 6:45. The concert in the barn didn't start til 8:30, so I figured we had plenty of time. It was around the 30 minute mark after we were seated and hadn't seen a server since that we began to worry. We watched someone at another table get up and go find a serv to take their order, so this problem wasn't exclusive to us (although the table next to us- who knew the employees there- finished their dinner before ours even arrived despite being seated 15 minutes after us). Almost a full hour after we were seated, the bartender came over and wearily asked if anyone had taken our drink orders yet. We told him not yet, and asked if we could put drinks and food in right away since we were running out of time. He told us the burger and the whole fried fish were the fastest things they could do, so that's what we ordered. Thankfully, they did come out in a reasonably short time, but we still had to rush through dinner to get to the show before it started. We were staying the night at the lodge, and had purchased a package that was advertised as a nights stay, a three course meal at the restaurant, and breakfast. We came to find out that this package was actually separate from the room charge, and for just the meals it was $150 for one person. Tack on $10.50 tax and a $24 restaurant gratuity charge (which we found curious, since on the menu/website it states "Hospitality Included- we have raised our prices to provide better wages for our staff") for a total of $185, which is substantially higher than if you purchased even their most expensive items a la carte off the menu. Maybe some drinks are included? I'm not sure since it was never actually explained to us. Credit where it's due- the burger I ordered was PHENOMENAL. Possibly in my top three I've ever had. Everything about it was perfect, and I don't say that lightly. The fries that it came with were also excellent. To be clear, the staff were doing their best. The bartender was extremely helpful, taking our order and even serving us our food despite us being seated in the dining room, presumably out of his normal range of responsibility. We only ever saw one server in the restaurant, so she had her work cut out for her because it was pretty busy. The food was excellent, so the kitchen staff is carrying their weight. The management here seems to be the issue- their vague pricing and short staffing is completely unacceptable. If you're in the area, have nothing but time on your hands, and have the patience of a saint- give it a shot. The food is good. If you're staying at the lodge and have purchased a meal package, grab a pen and do a little math on the back of your napkin while you wait to put your order in. I hope the burger can take some of the bad taste out of your mouth. read more

It is the highlight of our Memorial Day weekend! They sat us in a private room which is very thoughtful. Our waiter was absolutely dedicated to us, patient, and pleasant. Local beers, and the Italian wine was delish. I had the non alcoholic beer because - as you know gentle readers - I don't drink anymore. We had scallops, golden beets, toasted bread and butter as appetizers. Then we had lasagna and the wagyu beef... all delish. For dessert we all had crème brûlée and our dear waiter said they might be overcooked and offered to switch to the chocolate cake in case we didn't like it... which was very thoughtful and never happens in restaurants!!!! ALSO THEY HAD SALSA NIGHT IN THE BARN!!! (Forward forward back, back back forward) Nice historical environment. It was a beautiful way to start our weekend. Thank you Massachusetts people. read more

I would really recommend this place to anyone who wants to see something they have never seen before. I was planning on a solo afternoon lunch while in the area. The sign next to the door said OPEN. So, I went into the tavern planning on having tavern fare and a beverage. I was told they arent open at 230pm but would be open about 4pm on Wed for the kids menu. As I left, I was thinking, ok but kids dont arrive alone in the middle of nowhere, you're gonna feed the adults that bring them right? I return at 4pm. I was then told they dont open until 5pm. So I decided to wait it out. It was raining all afternoon and I was sitting outside their door where the staff were relaxing and ... apparently they will serve the patrons of their Inn? For $67 almost wants to say, fine give me a room and a bowl of soup. But as I waited in the rain and snow (November 2023) staff came outside to hammer in signs pointing towards the Tavern and the Kids area. And then they came out to put a big Red White and Blue flag out front that says OPEN. The staff were walking by me to do all this. About 420-430pm 2 white Toyota Highlanders arrive each with a mom and a child. They walk past the Tavern door to a further off door. The staff started a fire in the small outdoor fire pit that is in the walkway from the parking lot to the front door to the tavern. Its kinda cute I guess. At 455pm one staff said that I could warm up by the fire pit. He was kind, I thanked him and stood there for 3 minutes until 3 other patrons arrived to dine. So - when you first walk in, imagine dark barn wood. Imagine your grandparents house in the country with candle light and fireplace light only. Imagine paintings of a time when politically correct thinking would likely get you lynched. Imagine all the nick nacks your country grandmother thought were cute 100 yrs ago, next to Christmas lights and modern Pier One decor. There is a small fireplace near the entrance next to the painting of the colonialist in a tricorn hat. They have postings of upcoming bands for the week, that apparently play in the BARN, but sometimes will play in the end dining room where the Kids are invited to dine / play on Wednesdays so the kids dont bother the parents. There is a cute set of pergolas and seating rings alongside the Race Brook. There are 8 foot walls made of branches that span along the far side of the restaurant area. Inside there are games and more chill zones. The menu was severely lacking. I wanted soup. No soup. I wanted a sandwich. No sandwich option. Ok. What do we have? you can get bread and butter for $8. You mean, like the bread and butter restaurants give you for free? yea. Ok. The lowest priced entree was the Tavern burger. I did not see anything about it that would make me want to pay $25. I think it had truffle oil on it and some other bougie options to try and make it seem like a hamburger should cost $25. Bacon was $5 extra. I chose the half a chicken dinner for $30. The polenta was cooked well, the lemon flavor of the cooked chicken was nice. The food was all good, but not worth the $30 at all. There were no real dessert options. And (remember it was snowing?) I overheard the host saying to the bartender that a "hot toddie" was an off menu item. I mean. Its hot water, whiskey and whatever spices you feel like adding. How hard is that to make and how much are you upselling the fact that its off-menu? Theres literally nothing decent on the menu. The most expensive item was the Sirloin tips and Fries. $42 . There is a "speak-easy" just next to the parking lot as you come towards the fire pit and front door to the tavern. The overall vibe, is that they are really too good to serve you. But also, maybe too scared to serve you because you are expecting something they just are not. Everyone and everything about the place reads, this is an old time place, these are unpolished servers, the routines are new, our expectations are low, but our prices are high. All that being said, I feel they are pricing themselves out of the market. The food is not so amazing to say, "that was worth it". The menu it too small to feel like, "Id come back for that". The exclusively high priced food items make those first 2 issues a problem. If there were 2 or 3 normally priced items: a sandwich, a chicken parm, a hamburger under $20... these would attract a few people who accidentally ended up here into having a halfway decent experience. So, expect a unique time here. It is worth the visit just to try and put into words what you have just experienced. If you have the time, the trail from the property to Race Brook Upper Falls are worth the 1.3 mile walk. The trail (owned privately) is a fairly easy walk. The trailhead just down the road is also very flat leading up to the Upper Falls. read more

This is an updated review and difficult to write after my first glowing review of this establishment. We drove an hour out of our way to dine here and were utterly disappointed. I don't know what happened to this restaurant but the COVID pandemic can't take all the blame. The good: The restaurant still has the old world charm and a friendly atmosphere. I also understand the service constraints that the pandemic has caused and empathize with the restaurant. Our server was initially pleasant and attentive. However it all goes downhill from here: The menu was very limited (again understandable with COVID) but it is still a business so the four entrees of a fish (Halibut) , a beef (tenderloin) , a pasta, and a mushroom dish should all be available on a Sunday at 6:00. The table ordered two beef tenderloin, the Halibut and the mushroom dish and separate appetizers. About 5 minutes before the arrival of the seriously small and underwhelming tomato and strawberry salad we were informed that the Beef Tenderloin was "eighty sixed" and we would have to choose from the three other non-meat options. Reluctantly we both selected the Halibut. When this dish arrived it was bland, boring and uninspired, especially at its high price. I sent it back after two small bites and asked for it to be removed from the bill. Upon my displeasure the server suggested I try the "Tavern Burger". The big question of the day "why wasn't the Tavern Burger offered earlier? Hopefully unSolved mysteries picks this up someday. Moving forward, I declined the burger since everyone else was almost finished with their entrees. Upon my decline the service responds "I WAS JUST ADVISED WE HAVE THE BEEF TENDERLOIN AND IT WAS A COMPUTER ERROR"...Why would you ever tell a customer this after so many previous errors...I guess they were just digging a hole at this point. Great classic old-school atmosphere. Well they could paint that fence a forest, green, or a red like the buildings instead of that bright annoying light gray but the vibe is really incredible and the service was fantastic. The menu is very limited, and the dinner I had was very disappointing. Short ribs that were dry and over cooked. I don't know why anyone would have trout Stew but I will definitely go again. They take Covid precautions very seriously which is appreciated. Pros: The outdoor space was transformed into a beautiful area, with small fires and fairy lights throughout. Warm, peaceful and lovely. The food was very good- I ordered the macrobiotic plate and it was very tasty. Cons: Because of Covid, personal interaction is almost non-existent. When seated, we weren't told that the menu and all ordering was to take place via a QR code that opens up in Safari. The response when ordering was great but it would have been apropos for the someone to tell us when seating us on how things would work. After we finished, a waitstaff came over and put a bucket by the table and said if we didn't want to keep the dishes on the table we could put them in the bucket (which she put on the ground) or we can keep them there until we leave and then she would bus them. I've eaten out a few times during Covid and this was the first time I came across no interaction with the wait staff (again, it would have been nice when we were seated to be told how the mechanics of retrieving the menu and ordering would work) and having to possibly bus our own tables. read more

This place deserves to be better known than it is, judging from the half-empty dining room on Friday night of Memorial Day weekend (and other places in the area booked out). The nearest analog to this place is the Prairie Whale in Great Barrington -- both rustic gastropub type places that use local ingredients -- but the chef here (who is relatively new) has a different sensibility, more eclectic, more use of Latin and Asian flavors in dishes on a fairly small menu that includes roast chicken, salmon, pasta, and burgers. The red beet salad is a marvel: somehow the chef gets chunks of red beets to taste like sashimi. The burger is quite good. The coconut creme brulee for dessert is amazing. And the night we went, the playlist on the PA included some very tasty Afrobeat and reggae. Good selection of draft beers, though the wine list could use expansion. read more

I can't say enough positive things about this place and the people, let alone the food! What a diamond in a sea of places not really worth the time or attention. First of all the service they deliver with utmost care is outstanding. The space itself is gorgeous, the decor is tasteful while not over the top. It's comfortable for a night out, date night, etc. The food menu changes regularly and they are sourcing many ingredients from their own organic garden when they can. Supporting local businesses like this keeps us humble and learning, exciting new and better more sustainable lifestyles. It was one of the worst restaurant experiences. I was there to have my birthday dinner and specified it was a birthday dinner on my OpenTable reservation. I've ordered a glass of Rose. The color was as red as it was a glass of red and tasted like vinegar. And I was told it was supposed to be. I got a glass of Chardonnay, which was good. I also ordered the MEDIUM Skirt Steak Frits. It came WELL DONE. And the host told me she would get me a new one. When the server brought food, she dropped a small bowl of caramelized onion on the ground, and she said she would bring it again, which she had never done. I waited 30 minutes and canceled my steak and peach cobbler on the order text. Then the host came and told me she forgot to place the order. The ordered were done by TEXT as an un-contact service. She also said she would comp us the peach cobbler since it was already made. We had it to go. When I opened the container, I was in shock. It looked like someone's leftover dessert. read more

Beautiful place and atmosphere, paid extra for a romantic private room, but after we received the entrees I had a very interesting/specific question about the menu regarding the dish I ordered and the dish that I actually received . Please do not insult my intelligence, when your menu is promoting and selling a dish with prawns, than instead in my dish you give me shrimp and also try to convince me that it's the same, it's either you change your chef or get informed about the differences between the 2. The worse is we thought that someone would have had an explanation about it, but instead we got nothing!!! Again, your beautiful, romantic place with private room at extra price doesn't give you the rights to full costumers with ingredients, it might have worked out with different people but not with someone that owned restaurants and most importantly knows about food. So this is just a little advice to you all, make sure that the ingredients on the menu, are going to be exactly the same served on the dish you ordered, if not demand a clear and real answer!!! read more

This is an absolutely wonderful establishment. What truly makes it so spectacular is its cabin-like charm and warm fireside seating. First and foremost, Stagecoach Tavern is VERY pricy. This is definitely not a "quick bite" restaurant and will definitely take a bite out of your wallet. The service is definitely on the slower side, which can be frustrating, however it allows for time to chat and enjoy the ambiance. As for food, it's all delicious. I highly recommend the Tavern Burger, Arancini, Kale Salad, and Lamb Bolognese. The menu changes regularly, so snatch these up as they come out. As for the service: The staff is all friendly and has great intentions, but can be a bit overbearing and uncomfortable. There was a lot of "hon" and "love" from an older gentlemen that just felt out of place and uncomfortable. He would also constantly come to our table and stay there for just a bit too long. Whenever he'd come over, he'd also put his hands on my chair and sometimes my shoulder. This gentleman was also the bartender, but he didn't wear his mask. When he was making drinks, he'd put the ice in the glasses with his hands, no scooper and no gloves. read more

The ambiance is adorable! The service can be a bit erratic. Stagecoach did a great job bringing on Chef Massey, who is remarkably talented. Chefs good is great. The challenge, however, is the price point. A $25 hamburger (which is the least expensive entree item on the menu) is "unwelcoming." My wife and I spent our honeymoon at the Stagecoach Inn 40 years ago and came back to the Race Brook Lodge (as it is now called) for a nostalgic anniversary getaway. Our package included an exquisite dinner at the Stagecoach Tavern, one of the gourmet gems of the Berkshires (and one of the highlights of our honeymoon). The Tavern is authentically colonial, with wooden floors, beams, and a quaint assortment of rooms and spaces. It was quiet when we were there on a Sunday evening, so we enjoyed an almost private dining experience. The food was truly exceptional. We started with the roasted Brussel sprouts in an amazing roasted red pepper agrodolce sauce. Thanks to Glenn, our waiter for recommending. We both had lasagna as our main course. This is not your traditional lasagna but a ramp/pistachio pesto lasagna with mushrooms, spinach, and ricotta. It was lasagna to die for. Bravo to Andrew Jalbert the chef. And the final touch was a perfect strawberry rhubarb shortcake, not too sweet, and the shortcake was light and crisp. Our respective glasses of Cabernet and Pinot Grigio were perfect in accompaniment. Glenn, our waiter was attentive and low-keyed, and German, the bartender was solicitous and friendly, and brightened our celebration with a fresh flower and champagne. read more

We went there as a group last night for an early dinner, and sat at the bar for a drink first. The bartender Adam was very friendly and accommodating, so we ordered a couple of rounds of drinks and some cheese. The drinks were good. The cheese platter was a few cubes of cheese (Costco quality) and some Pepperidge Farm crackers, they should definitely kick this up a little or stop serving it. The baked Brie was simply a wedge of heated Brie with more Pepperidge Farm crackers with some honey drizzled over the top as well as some dried out figs and some greens. Both cheese appetizers were extremely underwhelming. I was a little disappointed. There are a million local farms in the area, they should talk to one of them about a seasonal cheese plate. The cheese appetizers actually lost them a star. Then we sat down for our entrees. I had the prime rib special, and the others had fish and chips, lamb shank and the roasted chicken. I must say that all the entrees were very good, but I really wish that the mashed potatoes and roasted veggies I got with my prime rib were just a little creamier and yummier. Our friends ordered a slice of homemade NY cheesecake for dessert. We all tried a bite. It was not very sweet and lacked the creaminess of something you could get in Brooklyn. I think it was a valiant effort, but it wasn't for me. Our friends seems to enjoy it though. Overall our visit was pleasant and I would definitely visit again. Food price / quality 8. Atmosphere is genuine Colonial era inn with heavy timbers, antique woodwork, and well done eclectic decor. This place is a delightful window into the past, and delivers an experience you can't get anywhere except from a 250 year old inn. Drinks were quite reasonably priced and service was excellent. Their hours of operation are limited to dinner Thursday through Sunday, and brunch Sunday 11 to 2 pm with live jazz. House cut French fries (not available too many places anymore), that were cooked very well done as requested, an unusual, delightful surprise. The menu is a little limited to tavern type food, as you'd expect, but the offerings are good ones. We split a burger that was high quality and cooked as requested. The dining area has many levels, which adds considerably to the ambiance. An approximately 10 seat bar is available. There are several booths tucked away into nooks for that privacy feel, begging for a romantic encounter. Fireplaces are strategically located, and bring a genuine "Colonial traveler" feeling to the experience. This place is New Emgland history personified, and is a national treasure not to be lost. We live 70 miles away, and will come here again and again. 10/18/2019. Came for dinner, had a "Crispy Shrimp" appetizer, $17, had the taste and texture of a carnival corn dog, disgusting. Had a sirloin entree, $31, poorly trimmed, small, and not a good cut. I still like the atmosphere, and will order the burger from now on. Service was lacking, I didn't get the coffee I ordered until after I finished dessert, and then it was a very small cup, only filled halfway, and lukewarm. Nobody offered to serve another drink. I then spent the entire night with gut wrenching stomach cramps. read more

Winner, winner, chicken dinner! Well, more like: winner, winner, hamburger and pork chop and fish taco dinner! I visited the Stagecoach Tavern a few days ago to celebrate my mother's 65th birthday; when I asked where she wanted to go a few months prior, she mentioned this spot causally. You bet I made reservations right away. Ha! My parents have been here many times in the past, but admitted it had been a few years. First off, the ambiance is wonderful, from the dark wood to the low ceilings; you get that old New England vibe. Second, the hostess and waitstaff were very kind and accommodating; as we arrived upon opening at 5:30 for our reservation, we scored the key 4-top round table by the front window. And third, the food was AMAZING. Seriously, it's been days, and my mom just texted me about how much she loved her pork chop. Ha! To start, I got their Chilled Chioggia Beet and Buttermilk Soup, served with cucumber, dill, and hard-boiled egg, which was robust yet delicate. It was one of the best chilled soups I've ever had, and I'm definitely itching to recreate it at home! My father got the fish tacos with chipotle aioli, which were filling and flavorful. My mom got the pork chop with gooseberry chutney, sweet potato puree, and grilled bok choy; it was more like a pork loin than a pork chop! The meat was so tender and flavorful, and the grilled bok choy really added a nice smokiness. Two of us got the hamburgers, made with grass-fed beef from Pigasso Farms in Copake, NY, and it was one of the best burgers I've ever had! Living in NYC, I feel that there are too many showy burgers; I feel l use little hyperbole when I say an average burger in NYC comes topped with onion rings, mac & cheese, baby back ribs, donuts, and edible gold leaves at this point, ha! This burger was simply cooked, medium-rare, with a nice melt of cheddar cheese on a simple bun with delicious hand-cut fries. Perfection! I didn't want to leave! I wanted to stay for Round #2 of dinner! Alas, a stomach can only hold so much in one evening. ;-) Haha... Thanks for an epic meal, Stagecoach Tavern! We showed up close to closing on a Friday night with no reservation and they were so accommodating. We would have been grateful for anything at that point, but they never rushed us and the food was wonderful. The cerviche and venison were both delicious. They made a burger for the kid in our group even though it wasn't on the menu. He declared it the best he'd even had. The amazing truffle fries it came with were wasted on him but enjoyed by the rest of us. The atmosphere is very charming, and the way tables are tucked away gives intimacy and privacy. The kindness of the people working there really was the highlight, which says a lot given how great everything else was! read more

Overall a very nice evening. Attentive wait staff, simple menu and one special. A definite southern influence; grits, pork bellies, kale. I had the Atlantic cod with potato and corn hash. Very good, but not delivered piping hot. My wife had the chicken au jus, very good and nice and hot. I had the peach cobbler and vanilla ice cream, she had the creme brulee, also very good.
