You drive through the winding hills of Millerton and just when you are a stones throw from the Connecticut border, you see a big red sign reading: TALLOW. Something about the building is familiar. An old McDonald's building, painted & reimagined. But the shape, the floors match the McDonald's from the memory of your youth. They've upgraded the vibe to be "upscale fast food", comfortable & chic booths, a beautiful fireplace I'd love to cozy up near in the winter, a stunning bathroom. The menu is calculated, purposeful: local ingredients from farms & local suppliers listed on a chalkboard, seasonal elements utilized to create fresh, mindful meals. There's a burger, a chicken sandwich, mushroom melt, steak, seasonal salads. Their burger is juicy, well-structured, perfectly seasoned. Their tallow fries are the perfect amount of crisp and fluffy interior, truly delicious--a hand cut fry that fast food could nevahhhh accomplish. We loved the grilled peach, heirloom tomato & burrata salad. It was fresh, drizzled with balsamic and oil, peppered with togarishi. There were three workers there: all of whom greeted us warmly, made us feel like family. You can watch the chef, Nate, whipping up your food right behind the counter, locked in and serious about providing you with a supreme experience. Austin, one of the owners, rolled out the dough used for the fresh buns. We witnessed the makings of our meal, every step, right in front of our eyes. My only complaint is I don't live in millerton, and I know I will crave this meal time and time again. I wish I could be right down the road, when a burger craving consumes me. It originally was name Tallow. The menu has changed a little but the food is still great. When in the area definitely worth stopping in.

We had high hopes for this new restaurant in Millerton as we gravitate towards local and healthy fare. We had the Smash Burger and the grilled cheese with mushrooms sandwich. The burger was thin and overdone and just ok. The grilled cheese with mushroom sandwich was tasty but very little cheese and mushrooms and the bread was good but very oily. Perhaps we will try it again in hopes that what we order will look like the photos others posted! Unfortunately did not take photos. read more

They have really dialed in their smashburger over the last couple of months. The bun has improved, the crisp around the edges has improved, and the quality of the ingredients has remained top tier. They currently have the best smashburger within an hour radius. Sidenote, I highly recommend the bone broth. read more

The woman who waited on us at the counter was not very friendly upon our arrival but she kinda warmed up as she served us. We ordered the 4 course prime rib dinner. We had Potato Lentil Soup which tasted good. The salad looked great but the flavors didn't mix well at all. Our prime ribs came barely warm (but delicious) and our baked potatoes were definitely reheated and came loaded with sour cream. I wish that was on the side so I didn't have to scrape it off. Dinner was topped off with a bread pudding with blueberries with a topping that didn't go with the dish. All in all the food was good, although I wish we were given options for things like dressing choice, how we wanted our meat and baked potatoes fixings. I was taken aback that we had to pay for our prime rib dinners at the counter upon ordering like we were at McDonald's. Definitely not worth the hour and a half drive or the nearly $100 price tag. read more

I had the steak. It was not just good, it was amazing. This is a casual place with some booths and a few group tables. It has a drive through, some seating outside, amazingly kid-friendly. They've got chicken fingers and burgers, but they also have a steak dish that rivals any high end restaurant in a large radius, and they cook with local farm-fresh, real ingredients. This place was amazing. I am up in the Hudson Valley for vacation which is basically a coffee shop and food tour. This is a relatively new place but the reviews looked great and I am always looking for a good burger. Tallow did not disappoint. We started with the heirloom tomato and seared peach salad. It was fantastic. Then came the burger. This is one of the best smash burgers I have had. The bun is made in house and all the ingredients are locally sourced. Being housed in an old McDonald's building really adds to the feel of the place. I can't recommend this place highly enough. read more

This is a restaurant dedicated to utilizing local ingredients, cooking with real food and preparing it with care and craftsmanship. Highly recommend the mushroom melt, smash burger. My kids had chicken sandwich and chicken fingers and fries - all of it was of a high quality and home made. I thought the prices were very reasonable considering the quality of the ingredients and the fact that there really were no short cuts in cooking the food. It's a great addition to Millerton and worth a detour from the Harlem Valley Rail Trail. We will definitely be back next time we are in Millerton. read more

Wowsers Best farm-to-table food I've had outside of my little town in a long time! Austin was the friendliest host and took good care of our group of three, ensuring our food was delivered quickly, so we could get to a concert. He was open to an idea to turn the bathrooms into non-gender specific restrooms. Stay tuned for that little tweak! Again, food was delish, served quickly & kindly, and the ambiance was spectacular! We came with a group and had one of everything. We loved it all, most especially "The Melt" and the steak frites. Service was also stellar.

This is not a fast food restaurant, in my opinion. Much higher quality. It reminds me of Tom Collichio's delicious and departed Wichcraft. I had an excellent short rib sandwich with white cheddar. I didn't try my friends' meals, but they were really happy with a fried chicken sandwich and a salad. The dessert was a rhubarb pie a la mode. It was well done, but not really my taste. I couldn't quite identify the overpowering spice. Clove? Nutmeg? Allspice? But it was a good pie. Tallow used to be a McDonald's. They've done a decent job transforming it. We sat at the outside tables and that was pleasant. The service was stellar. The staff was so nice and attentive. I hope Tallow makes it. A dearth of good restaurants in the area. We'll be back. What happened here?? Visited when it was Tallow a couple of times and enjoyed everything. Went this past weekend to what's now called Pasture Kitchen and it was awful!! Food so salty that there were no other flavors to be tasted!! We ordered goat cheese and berry salad. The two tiniest dots of goat cheese and a few leaves of arugula. Couldn't taste the burger meat due to oversalting. And the fries!! Those were the stars when it was Tallow. This time a tin of salty, greasy crunch with barely any potato. So disappointing!!! And they now have the tip prompt on their pay screen. It was nice not to feel pressured. Sigh read more

The food was some of the greatest i've ever had! the steak and eggs is a must for any breakfast lovers nearby. The workers always know you after the first time by name. The food is fresh from scratch. They are constantly making fresh bread with new dough daily. The vibe is very good as every customer gets treated like family! Tallow only opened on 29 April following the major renovation of an old MacDonalds--they did great job. The menu is limited and we had a chicken sandwich and their hamburger. Both were accompanied with some great fries. They also offer an optional house made habanero hot sauce which is very hot -- it's a personal decision to have it added to a sandwich and you must like very hot sauces to like it. Beer and wine choices are limited as well but pair well with the food. Ingredients are locally sourced from sustainable and regeneratively farmed growers. Definitely worth coming back again. read more
