The service was very good and friendly, the shotgun lunch items were slightly less good...good but not as good as the service. My wife and a lady friend of ours loved their half of a pimento cheese Sammy and a small greens salad...although they do need to offer more dressing choices...like blue cheese. My friend and I had the turkey half Sammy and agreed they were not the stars of the show.....two stars. All of these lunch specials came with a nice fresh small greens salads and chips. We've driven by many times on 35 but finally had the chance to stop this weekend to get some takeout on our way to the lake. We ordered over the phone and walked around Main Street while we waited which was very cute (and everyone was wearing masks!). I ordered the shaved beef sandwich which was very good, the bread was really fresh and tasty. I would also recommend the pork belly Benedict, but unfortunately ours was missing the hollandaise sauce. This review is for the bar. We occasionally drive here because it's one of the few places you can go to for a cocktail on a Thursday afternoon and pretty much guarantee no one else will be there. So, my husband and I walk in, and we are the only customers there. We sat a minute chatting before the bartender came out. My husband ordered a margarita, and I asked the bartender if she could make a bijou. She didn't know what it was, so I walked her through it because it's super simple. I told her one part gin, one part sweet vermouth, and one quarter ounce green chartreuse. One. Quarter. She said no problem, but the chartreuse was in the back and she had to go find it. She comes back out several minutes later holding a dusty bottle and says, "My manager says it's going to be a $19 dollar cocktail. Chartreuse is REALLLLY expensive." I started laughing. My husband just waved and said go ahead and make it. But, seriously? There is a quarter ounce of chartreuse in the drink. A bottle of it, retail, not wholesale, is $50. Do you know how many quarter ounces are in one bottle? The answer is 100. That's one hell of a markup. Geez, it's liquor, not gold. Oh, and she also made it with plain old beefeater gin. The owner of this historic inn has a history of developing some very nice properties. Unfortunately when the owner is away the mice play. With plenty of advertisement the new mouse, or rat, managing this establishment is the Bunkhouse Group. We happened to dine mid-week and were escorted by the hostess to the filthy windows at the back of the room. What immediately came to my mind upon entering is that the "manager" of this old belle needs to get a window washer! The first thing you see as you walk in the room are the filthy windows. Not only are the windows in need of a major cleaning the window sill where we were sat had a dirty band-aid on it! Instead of sitting next to the windows, and the dirty bandage, we moved ourselves closer to the bar which was occupied by one other diner. Unfortunately I'm part of the 5% who doesn't appreciate a television in a bar but I tried to ignore it. Our server soon presented himself. He was very young and very professional. The type of person your grandmother would call a fine young man. Maybe he could be made the manager one day? The menu isn't elaborate or fancy but it's adequate and appropriate. Think typical southern cuisine. Our server recommended the pork chops which we both ordered along with hush puppies and fried green tomatoes. Everything was good and we both thought the pork chops were cooked to perfection. My lovely other half happens to be a pork chop aficionado! The hotel/ restaurant is a strange mix. You have a quaint historic restaurant building with decent food, a "mid-century" motor lodge extremely close to the interstate, a very unattractive temporary type structure acting as the lobby and one piss-poor manager running the show. I ordered the chicken which was a very small piece that had an odd flavor and was very over cooked, I had to wash it down with water. My wife ordered the pork tenderloin which was decent, but not for the price they charge. Lastly, I ordered a margarita that was $14. It wouldn't be an issue, but I saw our waitress make the drink with really bad tequila. Insanely overpriced for what it was. Do not come eat here. Poorly managed and the chef is terrible. read more

The thanksgiving Buffet was a complete joke. The food was tasteless and cold. We waited almost an hour to be seated. I felt bad for the hourly workers this is all bad management. One server proceeded to scrape all the plates off into a separate plate all of it done between me and my guest. It was disgusting. I didn't get my drink till the meal was almost over. Then I got 3. They didn't have enough serving utensils people we're picking up food with their hands. The mgmt needs to take a real hard look at all that went wrong for next holiday. This was my first time dining at the Stagecoach Inn and I was deff excited to try it out. Many had told me how wonderful the food was and how they had been going since the 70's. I attended with a large party and luckily we had reservations because it was packed. It has nice wooden floors throughout the rooms and it is divided in sections as to keep the noise level down and it gives you a sense of privacy. I had looked at the menu online prior and was excited to try some of the dishes. I went with the prixe fixe because it offered an array of dishes. You start out first with 2 hush puppies with a honey butter. There was nothing spectacular about the hush puppies as some have raved prior. They were over crisped/fried with no seasoning other than the typical cornmeal taste. The honeybutter did help improve its quality but butter shouldn't have to do that. You get a small tea cup size of chicken consomme, which was tepid to the touch. Nothing about it stood out and I only sipped it twice. Yes sipped because according to the server it's not meant to eat with a spoon. That was followed by a seasonal fruit salad which consisted of cantaloupe, strawberries and grapes all drizzled with a light poppy seed yogurt dressing. The fruit was fresh and the dressing brought out the flavors of the fruit to the next level. Next came the main course of chicken fried Steak on a bed of mashed potatoes and fresh green beans smothered in white gravy. The green beans were savory and the mash was decent. Unfortunately the chicken fried Steak left a lot to be desired for it was overly salted. At first I thought it was the gravy so I moved that a side and it was still salty. Then I removed the crust and tried only the steak and it was still salty. Whomever prepared it, used so much salt it was impossible to eat. I thought it was me until I asked others at my table and concurred on their chicken fried steaks being extremely salted. When the server came by I mentioned that it was extremely salty and I could not eat it. She said she'd check with the kitchen. Mean while others had the primerib dinner which was tough to eat. That is disappointing for the price and because they show case it as a specialty. Others ordered the catfish and said it was very good. The deviled eggs are also a good appetizer to try. Another ordered the turkey dinner and said it was very dry and lacked flavor. My dinner came with a dessert and I ordered the brownie plate. I was hoping they could redeem themselves with that plate but to my avail it did not happen. The presentation was good, it had a large brownie on the bottom followed by 2 scoops of ice cream. One chocolate, one vanilla with a maraschino cherry and candied pecans. The brownie it self was really thin and over baked and that suppressed the flavor and borderlined on bitter. The ice cream was great and so were the candied pecans, so much they were the star of the dish. Our server came back and let the manager know about the chicken fried steaks. I was disappointed to discover that other patrons had complained about it and it was well known and they still served us sub par meals. The stars of the meal were the candied pecans and the seasonal fruit salad. Other than that the quality of the dishes is far from acceptable according to the prices charged. I can not recommend this restaurant at this point in time to anyone. Hopefully they can retrain the chefs and return to the high quality meals customers once had. read more

Stagecoach Inn used to have an exceptional, consistent kitchen with a great experience and lovely music. Gone are those days though. My family and I started with the traditional hush puppies that used to be served by the basket and all you can eat. They have changed the shape of the hush puppies from the fingerling shape to a spherical shape. They were completely burnt on the outside and gooey on the inside. They promised that the recipe didn't change and only the shape. While that may be true, the way they are being cooked is making them a disgusting, unappetizing mush. They also dusted them with sugar? I don't remember that part of the recipe whatsoever. After giving two a chance I gave up on them. Next came out the turkey dinner in a surprisingly quick fashion. The entire family ordered the turkey that used to be hand carved and only served on Sundays. We were very excited that they have now extended the turkey dinner to the daily menu and all ordered the plate. Consistency was not at all even an afterthought in plating these dishes. Some plates had hives pieces whereas others had tiny portions. One of the cups of cranberry sauce was half empty and a couple plates had cold stuffing. It also didn't have the same taste as it used to. It basically tasted like the turkey that they serve to elementary students prior Thanksgiving break- not good. I feel like I could've had a similar quality meal by buying a hungry man and saved quite a bit of money. We also shared the mashed potatoes and they had a sour flavor to them. In the past, we would've ordered strawberry kisses to finish off the meal but I couldn't handle ruining my childhood like that. The renovation of the building is very progressive. I enjoyed it aesthetically, but... is the Stagecoach Inn really that kind of place? The liberal in me appreciated the consideration that went into the design of the bathrooms but it really threw me for a loop to go back to the restrooms and see such a drastic change. I'm so sad to see such a cute, quaint little spot be turned into this "hip" joint which is obviously seeking a certain type of clientele from bigger cities. I wonder if the owners have considered that big city people can get this a dime a dozen in the cities. I wish them well, but after 31 years I need to find a new favorite restaurant now. read more

Very disappointing service for a wedding rehearsal dinner. Their event planner did not respond to calls or emails, never did provide drink menu and pricing. They never called to confirm plans anytime the week prior to the event and when I called them I was told that the event planner was not in and could call me back the following week. When I told them my event was THAT NIGHT the person on the phone seemed surprised to hear they had an event booked that night. When we got there I learned that we were not in the room we had reserved (paid for) and the table setup was not at all what we had requested. In fact, they set up exactly OPPOSITE to what we had requested. I had asked how many servers we would have for our party and was told 2, plus an assistant as needed. We wound up with only a single server, and while she was very nice and tried very hard, one person was just not able to take care of a party our size. The manager on duty was very apologetic and did comp us a portion of the charges but the whole night that was supposed to be a celebration for family and bringing our families together was very stressful and, as the host, very embarrassing event. They need an event manager that cares about their job and their clients and has basic communication skills like returning calls and emails. read more

All in all, a really bad trip down memory lane. No longer has the old Stagecoach Inn charm. Printed menu, higher prices, sports bar in main dining room, shortcuts taken with food, the list is endless. The banana fritters are worse than ever and tough, I don't know anyone who enjoyed those. The dessert chosen was the famous, or in this case infamous, angel kiss. The meringue shell was so tough it couldn't be cut. There was a scoop of solidly frozen ice cream on top that was impervious to my spoon. Gone were the strawberries, replaced by four thin slices and a nasty strawberry liquid syrup, absorbing the syrup was crunbles of crushed grahm crackers posing as an awful deconstructed crust My guest and I were told the shells were so tough because they were made from dehydrated reconstituted egg whites. What??? We were supposed to let the ice cream melt to soften them. What??? I've always enjoyed the consume, the new version is served lukewarm and was disappointedly bland. The aspic has lost its spiciness and the size was reduced by half. Hush puppies. Travesty! Only two per customer and served with sweetened butter. I ordered some extra and asked for plain butter. They were good, even if I didn't get real butter. I won't be back. I have the original cookbook and will serve myself quality food prepared from it. read more

I love the atmosphere and location of this restaurant and I guess that's why I keep going back, but this has to be the last time! I gave my review 1 star because of location and atmosphere and our waitress was very good. I also love the hush puppies appetizer which I had thought about all day. Meal goes down from there. My friend ordered the shrimp pasta and I had the salmon and risotto. Both plates smelled so fishy when placed before us. Rather off putting. My salmon was the palest pink color on a white plate sitting on top of mushy white risotto. Apparently there were 2 small little pieces of asparagus in the risotto and a pink or magenta colored liquid swiped across the plate. The salmon had what appeared to be grey fish skin on top. I would be hard pressed to believe the skin even touched the pan. I had about 4 bites of the salmon and it was cooked, but again, the fishy smell made the dish so off putting. The shrimp in my friend's shrimp pasta was rubber. We had no dessert and no alcohol and our meal came to around $86 with tip and tax. I don't mind paying for a good meal, but this was horrible. Probably the worst meal I've ever had in my 73 years! I won't go back. This was the last visit. Don't know how this restaurant stays open and I've been many times. I don't know who cooks the meals but food prepared at a blue plate special cafe somewhere else in the county would have prepared more visually appealing and better tasting food. Check in was a little crazy waiting for someone to return to the office , then for the parking lot gate to be opened. Then a ride on a golf cart to the room with our luggage. I imagine if you need help with luggage at check out to call the office for a golf cart. The room is a little noisy like the walls were hollow or something. Came here recently for the first time since they reopened and it's definitely a fresh new look on their menu and interior. Absolutely love the re-design! I got the Seared Salmon with mashed potatoes instead of the jalapeño creamed corn and it was well cooked and very tasty. Didn't care much for the grilled escarole and cilantro tortilla salad was basically nothing but a small bite. The fish appeared to be just your basic Atlantic salmon(which all of these are farm raised not wild caught). The dessert I received for coming on my birthday was spectacular. Their version of a tiny Key lime pie. Wow. Small and perfect on the senses. Can't wait to go back to try the other options I was eyeing before they surprised me with that one. read more

I haven't been back to the Stagecoach Inn in quite some time perhaps 15 or 16 years ago and the food was mediocre at best. This is not the stagecoach I remember. The menus much more straightforward, fresh and chef driven. This is the second time I've been in the past couple of weeks and we really enjoyed the cocktails the bartender Kayla has created. A very refreshing Lavender Lemondrop perfect for a warm summer day and the Sirenas Butterfly (which is a nice poolside drink) both are refreshing drinks that I would highly recommend. Plus I highly recommend Kayla's shaken Vodka martinis. She makes them with the perfect topping of ice crystals. Thank you for the great hospitality! I came here for a family dinner and it was genuinely one of the worst meals I've ever had.. I ordered a salad with chicken and the lettuce was wilted and tasted of burnt plastic somehow. The root vegetables were so salty I had to spit them out. All of the meat was either undercooked or over cooked. EXTREMELY disappointing and dissatisfying meal. If you like a little Texas history to go along with your meal then you're in the right place. This is the oldest operating hotel in the state.Originally a stagecoach stop on the Chisholm trail, which ran through Salado, it is now much more than that. Totally renovated a few years ago, it now boasts a top notch restaurant, event hall and much more. Have eaten here twice and the food is consistently good. Nice bar and balcony also. We found the staff very friendly and accommodating, the service attentive, and the food very good. Our table of eight tried several different menu items - all were nicely presented and of good quality. We loved the hushpuppies (even though they aren't like the ones of years ago) and the strawberry kisses were pretty and delicious. Our request to bring in a special cake of our own was welcomed with no issues, and staff enthusiastically volunteered to take photos for us. All-in-all, a very pleasant experience. I ordered the $20 shrimp and grits. After about 40 minutes they came out lukewarm and lumpy - like paste. The grits seemed like they were the remnants of a long day sitting in a pot. After sending them back, the same shrimp and same grits were returned at about the same temperature but on a warmer plate. My wife ordered prime rib with mashed potatoes. While the flavor was good both the steak an potatoes were lukewarm. No manager ever checked on us. Upon voicing our disappointment as we left I was told I would be contacted. We were playing tourist in Salado on Mothers Day. This place had been on my list of "gotta try". There was a 30 minute wait for a table, but, that was ok. It gave me time to explore the building and grounds. This place was built in 1860 on a Tonkawa Indian Village site. All of the staff here were very friendly except for the young guys. They lacked in personality big time. One guy was even complaining that he was "doing the best that he could". Very unprofessional. The staff allowed me to walk around freely. I went upstairs to a large room with a beautiful fireplace at each end. I did a little ghost hunting up there while waiting on my table. No luck on the ghost, but, some of the staff swear they hear foot steps quite often. Once we were seated our waitress brought out the water jug (self serve) and read off the menu offerings. Yep, that's right. All old school here. No physical menu. The offerings for main courses were: turkey & dressing; lamb roast; prime rib. All with mashed potatoes and green beans. I went with the lamb and sidekick took the turkey. First things to come out were the white corn meal hushpuppies. They were just ok. Could have used some mustard for dipping. Next, the main courses come out. Man! For $21 you get your money's worth on portions. Sidekick's turkey included a whole leg and several slices of breast meat. Very moist and delish! My lamb roast was good. A bit over cooked and the gravy was a tad too sweet. Also the lamb didn't have that nice gamey taste that pairs well with the mint jelly. It was good, but, I've had much better. The mashed potatoes were dry. Very dry. But once I dipped them in the sweet lamb gravy it worked out. The green beans were not fresh at all and were very bland. A $21 dish that was more like a $13 dish. They also brought out some dinner rolls that looked like little penises! Seriously. No shit. Little penises. Check the picks. I would go back here for sure because I love old historical buildings and this place has some energy. I would love to spend more time on the second floor doing a little ghost hunting. The building and grounds are beautiful, and, if you are ever in Salado, this is a must. read more

Went on to order dinner the waitress came back no chicken but they had pork chops no one eats pork (8) so order mash potatoes and string beans all I can say everything was over salted we paid over $250.00 and all the manager offered was a free strawberry ice cream desert. MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND STOP #5 Old rich people build homes in the hills of Salado and then move there to protect the history of the small town. Our hostess had to be at least 90 years old. Our waitress recited the menu to us, because in its 150+ years, the Stage Coach has never had a written menu. The history and vibe of the small town was fun. The food was pretty good too. Every meal comes with: salad, chicken broth, hush puppies, dinner rolls, fried bananas, and dessert. And I haven't even mentioned the entrees with their different sides. So, plan on loosening your belt, or wear pants with an elastic band. The Chicken Fried Steak was well battered and smothered in a gravy with presence. The BBQ was OK, but I knew it would be hard to get too excited after stuffing myself with BBQ all weekend. Our host ordered Beef Stroganoff. Since he moved to Salado just so that he could eat at Stage Coach Inn every day, I'm guessing I should probably order that next time. FINAL THOUGHTS: Stage Coach Inn is a nice stop on the way to Austin. The town is quaint, and the restaurant was a fun, and surprisingly tasty, experience. read more

My family had not been since the remodel, I had been once before and the service and food were excellent on my previous visit. Last night the food was wonderful, however as another reviewer stated, the restaurant was out of a wide variety of food by the time we arrived for a fairly early dinner at 6:15. (Chicken salad and hush puppies were not available as well as other entrées)Our server was friendly, and thanked us for being patient, but the service was slow. Real slow. We aren't the complaining type and we were enjoying our time together, but I would say we waited close to 15 minutes for our drinks, and longer for the Check. I'm going with four stars because my first visit was fantastic. The ambience is lovely and the food was good both visits. My family agreed last night was likely (hopefully) a fluke and we will return! read more

I not only ate at the restaurant once but visited it 3 times during my stay. Courteous and friendly staff. The bartenders really know their stuff and made me a perfect martini. The tradition of the Stagecoach Inn meals are gone. The atmosphere for a "fine dining" experience was diminished by the huge television over the bar in the dining room. We had the prime rib dinner. The salad was crisp and tasty. Prime rib excellent and perfectly cooked. However the little tea breads served with meal with out butter ? The au jus was unrecognizable. As I have traveled around the world you would be hard pressed to know you were truly in Texas. The food was really the disappointment. Example 1 - Shrimp cocktail was 4 shrimp served with what tasted like salsa for $12. Example 2 - The chef apparently had a problem with cooking a prime rib to medium, the server made this point clear prior to bringing the order out, had to send back due to heavy pink! The prime rib was void of taste, served with ausjues that was more grease than drippings. We were a party of six, and this was my first and last time. I have ate at restaurants like Tenders in Vegas, 57 Fighter Group in Long Island and Ruth Chris in Austin. There was a time the Stage Coach Inn was a favorite stop or even a destination for a unique, delicious meal. LONG GONE. I was worried that we might have trouble being seated at lunch. When we arrived the place was vacant. When we got our menus and especially our food, we understood why. We ordered Chicken Fried Steak from the very limited and overpriced menu. Due to my diet I asked for a salad instead of the potatoes. For salad the gave me a finger bowl size of some foo-foo green stuff that more resembled hedge clippings than salad. FIVE DOLLARS ADDITIONAL! Food was small portions, over cooked, overpriced and too salty. Waitress and manager were indifferent. During our visit, no other dinner guests-NO WONDER WE WON'T be back. I have tried this place many times with my parents who live in the area and I just have always felt rubbed the wrong way. Maybe it's because I bring my toddler and now infant with me, and they don't like kids there. Anyway service is always sub-par and the food is only ok. This morning I hit my max for stagecoach and likely will not come back. My mom met me and my boys for lunch but all that was available was their brunch. They have a decent brunch menu that has a couple non-breakfast items but you're mostly stuck with the usual bfast fare. I ordered the avocado toast and added an egg which I ordered over easy. I'm honestly not really sure where the avocado was and the egg was all the way done. I didn't say anything though cause it took so dang long for the food to come out. I split a giant fruit bowl with my son and that was probably the best part. The pancake I ordered for my son was ok and my mom's breakfast plate was a hearty serving of eggs, potatoes, toast, and bacon. The bathroom was dirty and the Sink wouldn't drain and the staff had about as much personality as a plain piece of paper. I'm just way over The Stagecoach Restaurant and it's disappointing experiences. read more

$30 for 2 burgers! Seriously overpriced, poor service, bland food and tepid side dishes. I ordered the child's cheeseburger and fries. For $8 I received a completely bare burger--no toppings of any kind. There was a single pickle slice on top of the bun as a garnish. The fries were tasty but room temperature when brought to the table. I also ordered "the works" burger ($18!) with green beans instead of fries. The burger patty was the same size as the child's. As for toppings--3 pieces of very overdone bacon, unevenly applied sweet tomato jam, a smidgen of onion, and a fried egg. The avocado was missing. The egg was perfect. The burger patty was hot and cooked properly. The menu says tobacco onions, which I assume was the tiny portion of grilled onions I found towards the center of the burger, buried under very sweet tomato jam. The green beans were served in a cast-iron ramekin, which was warm but not hot to the touch. The green beans themselves were room temperature. They were served on a bed of raw red onions. I tried to convince myself it was supposed to be a cold dish, like a salad, but then why serve it in a warm cast iron ramekin? I didn't bother to ask the server about the dish or to request my missing avocado because god-only knew how long I'd have to wait. The burgers took 40 min to deliver to our table, and she did not come by to check on us during that time.
