The theater is small, there's only one level, and all of it is orchestra. Hence, there are no bad seats. Orchestra F3 was a perfect seat. Since this is a modern theater, the seats are spacious and comfy. Bring a jacket as it gets really chilly in the theater. Romi and Michelle show was absolutely divine. So bright, positive, and uplifting. Very empowering for women. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to smile, laugh, and have a blast. The cast is super talented. The show lasts 2 and 1/2 hours with a 15 minute intermission. read more

How many times have you seen the same Broadway play twice in one week? We came to watch "Gotta Dance" at the stage 42 theater. Available for $35 from tdf.org with plenty of openings. I'm here for Wednesday matinee and a Saturday evening Main disadvantage is that the show is off Broadway around 42nd and 10th avenue a 40 minute walk from our timeshare on West 57th Street, compared to a 25 minute walk to Times S quare. Theater has an escalator to bring patrons up to the theater from ground level, with escalator going down when the play ends. First five rows have eye level below stage. First row well below stage level was left vacant. Small theater only 499 seats and 8 women's toilets. No line at intermission. Dance routines from songs from such iconic plays as Singing In The Rain, Gypsy, Jerome Robbins Broadway, Smokey Joe's cafe, Pippin, A Chorus line, Swing, An American in Paris, West Side story, Brown Sugar, and Irving Berlin's White Christmas. Show was only about one third full, so I don't expect the show to be around when we come back in October read more

One of many theaters owned by the Shubert Organization, Stage 42 is a well-designed and accessible venue on 42nd Street off 9th Avenue. Enter on the ground level -- restrooms are located here -- and take the escalator up to the auditorium. The theater is surprisingly big, with comfortable stadium seating. Sound was good, line of visibility great, air conditioning strong -- I hope to see other performances here. read more

Came here to see the show, "Romy & Michele: The Musical" with my sister because we are big fans of the movie. The seats were very narrow so we were cooped up on one another...the lady next to me got irritated because my jacket spilled over to her seat. It was the second night of the show so it wasn't fully set-up and there weren't much drink options. I asked for the show cocktail specials and the bartender told me that they didn't have any set-up yet since the show just started. There was a cute little photo-op set up nearby with balloons and a prom-looking backdrop. The musical itself didn't capture the same magic as the movie did. Even though the actors were magnificent, the show didn't capture the essence of the friendship that was depicted in the movie. It was very slow-paced at the beginning that I found myself dozing off but I'm glad to have gone to see it with my sister because we did have a good time either way. read more

We went to see Lord Nil: 7 Deadly Sins here. It was a very entertaining play. A majority of the people that also came to see when we went seemed to be people associated with NYU but nevertheless, I enjoyed the show. There is some interaction between the cast and the audience for a bit of it and the play was actually acted out pretty well. read more

This is such a beautiful theatre and the set design was a lot of fun for Romy and Michele. The play itself is overlong and perhaps padded with an extra long intermission that should not exist in the first place. A tighter 90 minute show with no intermission would have been better suited but the 2nd act is indeed better. The theatre was air-conditioned to the point of being a meat locker except it was barely 58F in mid Oct. I almost bought wine to warm myself up but balked at the $19-42! prices. A large man was manspreading all over my personal space and hanging partially on top of me. Between the icey cold theatre, the prices and the seating arrangements, this was largely a physically uncomfortable experience. The show was shallow enough to not offer a reason for its existence. read more

I attended the Twenty Sided Tavern, a Dungeons & Dragons improv show here, and it was the most fun I've had at a show in ages. I'm not much of a D&D player myself - I've only played one session of a campaign - but my boyfriend has been a DM for decades so when I heard of this show I know he'd love it. We went together and it was so fun for me, even without much D&D knowledge, and really helped me better understand the game he loves so much. The show is basically a D&D campaign with a DM and three players: a warrior, a mage, and a trickster. Each audience member gets assigned one of the characters & the entire audience got to choose which type of character they'd play. For your own character, you got to help select what attacks or spells they'd use (with of course a 20 sided die to determine the success rate. The audience also got to have input on where we'd go, what we'd investigate, NPC character names, and more. How did we do this? Well, there was a QR code to a site we could use to vote. All and all the show was so unbelievably entertaining and the actors were stellar. It's a nice theatre, they had great merch, and they had fun D&D decor all over. My only complaint was the overpriced drinks - $7 for a bottle of water and my boyfriend got a $31 cocktail?!! What??? (it was a double but still yeesh). We might skip the drinks next time, but I think we'll come back for the show. Every show is different given the improv and audience choice, so we can't wait to bring some of his players next time! read more

I've never been here before, so going to this theater was a big deal. The stage isn't that large, so the play or show can't be a big production. I liked how the entire venue was decorated, and it made the place feel like you're in the dungeons and dragons game. There's three levels, but there is no need to worry as there's escalators for those who can't climb stairs. You can get refreshments and snacks for those who want to quench their thirst or eat something small. There's also a water fountain too. The ladies' room is on the second floor, and there are changing tables in the two stalls. For where you sit, it's not a large theater, so anywhere you sit, you'll have a good view of the stage. For the d&d interactive production, the entire venue was perfect for it. I wouldn't mind going back. read more

In the past I did come here to see Kinky Boots but recently I did see the off broadway Dungeons and Dragons play and enjoyed it very much. I don't know if I had a lot of faith in it being amazing but it was great. I understand most of the concepts even though I am not an actual D & D player in real life. I happened to be in the mage section so I loved how interactive everything ended up being. The crowd got to use our phones to vote for certain tasks like fight, run or just ignore basically. The other two sections seemed fun, the Warrior and Trickster but the Mage section was where it was the place to be. The actress seemed so cool that played the Mage. Fun night and a nice off broadway play to check out here in NYC. read more

I was gifted these Kinkyboots tickets. Last Sunday afternoon, I took my mother. We were shocked where we seated. Row D is the 4th row from the stage. I was wary how my mom would react to the storyline. My fear was squashed when I saw her clapping her hands to the beat. The show is extremely energetic, and fun to watch. The energy in the whole theatre changed instantly, as soon as the curtains rose. It's an important story of history, family, friends, and finding and staying true to yourself. I like the motto of this show: "You change the world when you change your mind." The man at the will call desk and the usher who escorted us to our seats were very helpful. I would gladly go to another show at this theater. read more

On the spur of the moment we decided to go to the Dungeon and Dragons The Twenty Sided Tavern Show while my friend and I were in town. She had seen something about it on IG and plays the game but I walked in with no prior knowledge or experience and it was a blast. They break down everything pretty well, there were a few moments I was a bit lost but in general I had a good time. The digital audience participation was so cool and the cast did an amazing job! It was hard to tell what was rehearsed/improv. Also, because it was a smaller audience on a Sunday night they upgraded our seats which was pretty nice! read more

I saw the Dungeons & Dragons show here last night. The theater was small and it was easy to feel like we were a part of the show in this interactive show. Surprisingly, the bathrooms were clean. The drinks were the standard broadway style drinks which cost $18 each. Hope to see another show here soon. read more

Came here with my friend to see Kinky Boots, it was a great show to see. This was my first time at this theater and it's a pretty nice venue. The lines outside gets long quickly, the restrooms are in the first floor, they are escalators and stairs to go upstairs to the theater. They have a bar to with light drinks and snacks. The seats are a bit wider than most theaters, which was comfortable. read more

Adding this theater to my list of fave theaters! I've been here before but just returned tonight to see Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish. I can't rave enough about this show. It was just wonderful! I don't speak or understand Yiddish at all, but I thoroughly enjoyed this show. There are subtitles on both sides of the stage, in big font, so there is no problem at all reading the subtitles. The entire cast was so talented! Great acting, singing and dancing. This was a heartfelt story, filled with history and traditions, and trying to navigate life in the ever changing world. Deep stuff, yet wonderful moments of lighthearted laughter and celebrations. This play had it all. It's a Must See! Even better when you can currently get $20 tickets on the day of the show, via "20 at 20"...you can purchase $20 tkts, 20 min before the show. My friends and I went on a Thursday evening and got 6th row orchestra seats! These tkts are only available until 9/22/19, so go soon to take advantage of this deal! My only issue with this theater is that it has a tiny lobby. Waiting on line in the lobby is an issue, until they open the doors for admittance. But the great staff does the best they can, given the limited lobby space. I must note that this smallish theater has a huge bathroom with many stalls! Kudos to Stage 42 for their restrooms! The theater seating is great; lots of leg room; every seat is a good seat. Great sound. Professional and friendly staff. Now go get your $20 tkts for this amazing show while you still can! read more

Review is for The Twenty Sided Tavern: Fantastic show combining improv with a somewhat set storyline. Audience involvement was a good amount comfortable for your level from answering choices on your phone to shouting out suggestions to possibly participating. The audience was very diverse and there was something for everyone in the show. You could tell the actors were having a great time coming up with new versions of a plot familiar to them, and that was infectious seeing them laugh at themselves. Drinks were rather pricey but it's an experience. They moved our seats up based on open seat availability and the seats were comfortable padded, much better than other theaters in NYC I've been to. Also the bathrooms were clean and so many stalls... No line really even at intermission. Highly recommend, even if you're not into the role-playing world. read more

We attended the Twenty Sided Tavern show--a terrific mix of Dungeons & Dragons live play, improv theater, and interactive technology. We had a blast! I've never seen improv that was so tight. The cast was top notch (our showing even included the incomparable Felicia Day!). The set was great (including props in the lobby) the merch was cool, and everyone in the audience seemed to love it. I hope to have another chance to see show. Love that it's different every night :) read more

This is pretty nice theater, not too far from Port Authority. Once they let you in the theater, make a bee line for the bathroom if you need since there's only one on the first floor and everyone else will be heading there too. There wasn't a lot of space to wait for people, they shuffle you upstairs where there is a little more space. It's important to know which side entrance your ticket is on since there is no easy way to cut from one side to another. It's got that modern feel so as soon as you sit down you see the set, no curtains, and the ceiling has an industrial/visible pipes instead of a giant chandelier in a traditional theater. So even though this place is kind of on the small side, it makes it more assured you'll have a good view, and a play like Smokey Joe's Cafe really felt like the right play for this venue. Like you're right up close to the stage so practically right with the cast. read more

Went here to see Smokey Joes Cafe, I loved the play!! This review is about the theatre. Location: This is easy to locate; a short walk about 3-5 minutes from Port Authority 42nd Street station. I should let you know either side of the street has its obstacles. The side of the bus station is full of sketchy characters- if you're lacking grit it could be a bit unnerving. The opposite side is just a matter of navigation the jitneys and people rushing home. Theatre: The lobby is small so don't think you can linger there too comfortably as you wait for friends. The people who work there are very friendly which is a bonus. The theatre has an escalator to get to the seats- what a blessing! After walking the stairs at Spongebob and nearly laying down on the ground telling my husband to just leave me behind- I was so excited for the escalator! I'm lazy and I admit it!! The theatre is stadium seating so no having to alter you angle for the person in front of you! That was also glorious!!! I sat in row L seat 105 I think- I didn't miss anything and the seat was very comfy!! Also it was a bit cold in there so bring a jacket or a pashmina to stay warm!! After the show was done I went to the front to take pics and I'm so glad the usher didn't yell at me to leave like they do at other theaters. I took pictures of others and myself. I don't know if they always have this perk but there was a guy by the step and repeat taking photos for people with the cast! That worked out for me since I went to this show solo. Bathroom: This is a large bathroom with ample stalls I would say approximately 20. This is a lot for Broadway!! Plenty of sinks and mirrors. read more

I just saw Under My Skin here as part of a Yelp night last evening. Friendly and helpful staff. The theater itself is on the intimate side and the views are pretty good even when sitting to the sides. Good sound, lighting, and acoustics. The theater itself reminds one of a throwback to the smaller venues when you could actually feel as part of the show. Very clean and the seats themselves were on the comfy side. Even the legroom wasn't too bad. Such a difference compared to most theaters where we're packed in with little room to breathe. Being that it's actually off-Broadway between 9th and 10th Avenue also keeps it away from the crazy crowds in Times Square which most of us try to avoid. Worth checking out for a show here. read more

I saw Trip of Love here with a friend. Despite being an off Broadway theatre, the place itself is actually of a decent size. And it features stadium style seating which provided us with great views of the stage. I'm used to going to Broadway shows feeling a whole lot like they are set in quasi torture chambers because the seats are so uncomfortable. Luckily, Stage 42 is one of the more comfortable theaters that I've been to. The seats are a little bit close together, so you can't really stretch your legs without bumping the chair in front of you, but a quick walk during intermission will solve that problem. The chairs were comfortable without feeling cramped, and they were staggered so that I never had to wiggle around to see over the person in front of me. read more

http://www.shubert-theater.com/ Saw Spamalot and in the secondd Row Mezzanine center seats, excellent. Because the slant is so steep, you are at a good angle to see the stage and not the back of the head in front of you. Pretty decent row spacing. The sets were tall on stage, so you felt close to the stage, even in the Mezzanine. Even though I missed not seeing Hank Azaria and Tim Curry and David Hyde Pierce it was still a great show, of course, 2005 Tony winner. How can you not love..."Your mother is a hamster and your father smells of elderberries". Loved the character cut out in front of the entrance of the theater, you take your photo with three of the knights, too cute. The line to get it was long but moved fast. read more

Great setting for Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish. Good acoustics, lighting, sight lines, subtitles. Or supertitles? Really, sidetitles. Went here last night to see Potted Potter and I must say it was a great experience. The theater was beautiful, very new with nice cushy seats (rare find Off Broadway). The staff was extremely helpful and happy to be there. In regards to the show I am not up on Harry Potter (have not seen the movies or read the books) but still found the performance entertaining and easy to follow along with. Would highly recommend for a family evening as the young Potter fans in the crowd were going nuts. And to seal the deal, there is a Papaya Dog across the street. BOOM! read more

Spamalot was A++++++ I had seats waaaaay up top. They were free so I can't complain but I do wonder why theaters keep the high balcony seats there. It'd be so much easier to just cut them away and build back further. A poll blocked half of my view and the people in front leaning weren't great either. That said, a theater is a theater and the show makes the experience. Find your grail. (Spamalot fans will know what I'm talking about) read more

Thanks to the staff at Yelp, I was able to attend Potted Potter at this theater. The theater: it was very nice venue and the staff were very helpful. The entire building was clean and the seats were comfy. On the tech side, the sound, lights and stage set up were top notch. As for the show: The two actors in this play were amazing and their high energy kept the hour and ten minute show lively. I was entertained to say the least. I liked how they had the audience participate and I appreciated their improved moments. I think this show is great for kids as well as adults. I got free tickets here to the show "Trip of Love." The venue itself was quite nice, with escalators and high ceilings to enjoy the view. I was very impressed with how nice the seats were and how well done the decor was. With the high ceilings, it made the place feel very large and very fancy. I really enjoyed it. And the seats and the view were great! They had decorated the sides of the walls to reflect the broadway play that was playing. The ushers there were quite nice and very polite, willing to answer any and all questions we had and at the end, when the broadway show was finishing up, I looked back and all I could see was the ushers dancing and just jamming to the show. What a cool group of people working there. I was sitting near the front and could see the orchestra underneath playing and although it was small, it seemed like they were having a great time. read more

Am I supposed to rate the show, or the theater? Ok, let's do both. I saw Spamalot. Lots of funny moments, but over all it felt too forced, both the performances and the laughter. It felt like everyone there had seen it 20 times before, and were expecting the funny parts.(They should, since the movie's been out for over 20 years.) We sat WAAAAYYY up at the top. The slant is really steep, and you have a great view of the stage, and whatever is going on behind the actors. Any surprise entrances are well, not surprising when you can see them rising out of the floor. If I went back to that theater I'd spend the extra couple bucks and get lower level seating. read more

I love the location of the theater, being Off Broadway means away from crazy Time Square which I always appreciate. The theater was very clean, and the staff was friendly. The seats were comfy and every seat had a great view of the stage, this was because the seats have a steep incline and the people in front of me were at my toes. I went and saw Potted Potter which was amazing, the theater had all sorts of little activities throughout the lobby which was fun. There was a place you could pretend to ride on brooms and get a picture and a big chalk board where you could write down which house you were in. I have never been to a theater that allowed the show playing to place fun things in the lobby! read more

I saw Potted Potter here last night and had an amazing time. What a production and what a nice, cozy theater. I had orchestra seats and the stage was large enough to have a perfect view of the players and the props, but just far enough to avoid completely getting soaked during the show (I won't spoil it for those who have yet to see it.) The staff was very helpful and friendly as well. There are beverages and snacks served, the seats were very comfortable, and the overall vibe was great. I loved that kids and adults coexisted so wonderfully in the theater and throughout the performance because the theater was so accommodating. The show itself was also fantastically witty and fun. Overall, I recommend the theater and the show to anyone who is curious about going. Go! It's not just the Harry Potter material, it's the actors themselves and the improvisational nature of the production and how it seamlessly manages to appeal to all ages. Go! Enjoy!
