I received my Mother's Day gift early this year and it was absolutely unforgettable! My husband and I went to New York and took me to see Moulin Rouge on Broadway, and it was everything and more. The show was surprisingly modern, and completely captivating from start to finish. The energy in the theater was unreal as everyone, including celebrities, came out to celebrate Megan Thee Stallion in her final performance as Zidler. She was hilarious, quick, and owned that stage in every moment she appeared. Even though I've seen her perform on tour, it felt like such a special experience to witness. I usually scoff at stunt casting, but seeing Megan Thee Stallion's take on Harold Zidler is a time well had. Even though it's a non-traditional spin on the character, she infuses the role with her signature "hot girl" energy and is a total joy to watch on stage. Despite her massive personality, she manages not to overshadow the rest of the cast. I think that speaks volumes about the group's chemistry... she fits right in without upstaging anyone. Since it's a jukebox musical anyway, having Meg perform some of her own hits while the rest of the company joined in was a great touch. Having seen the original cast in the 2019 Moulin Rouge production, which was also wonderful, I'm really glad I got to experience both interpretations. read more

What a fun and well curated show! This musical uses a jukebox style, which isn't for everyone. If you are a purest and want historically accurate sets, dialogue, and creative original scores, this probably won't land for you. However, it felt so accessible, fun, and lively! It didn't feel overly gimmicky either. Good mix of scores, harmonies between songs, acting, and dancing. I was most impressed by the set designs, orchestra, and lighting. There were even some exciting pyrotechnics, aerial silks, and other creative elements that really elevated the production. Very balanced mix of comedy and tragedy too! Wowww seriously what an incredible show and incredible cast. The whole experience at this show was top notch. We got the cutest mini moet champagnes to enjoy at our seats while we watch the show and they even had a service to mobile order concessions and they bring them straight to you. You don't have to be a big musical person to enjoy this show - anyone can enjoy this show and getting great seats in the first few rows or in the first couple rows of the balcony is 100% worth it because you really feel like you are in the show! Loved loved loved the show Moulin Rouge has always been one of my favorite movies, so seeing it live made me so happy. The energy, the music, the choreography everything was simply amazing. The theater itself was beautiful, and honestly one of the best sets I've ever seen. Every detail pulled you right into the story from the lights and costumes to the dazzling stage design that felt straight out of Paris. The performances were great you could feel the passion and emotion in every scene. The modern mashups blended perfectly with the classic story, and I caught myself singing along more than once. If you get the chance, go see it! You'll leave smiling, singing, and maybe even tearing up a little. 10/10 would see again! read more

The theatre was beautiful, and the actors and actresses gave out so much energy. It was colorful and cheerful. I was hoping for Meg to start the show, but Arianna was just as excellent. This is one of the fun shows that I saw on Broadway. We like going to Broadway shows a couple of times a year. We have seen all the popular shows. My wonderful sister won lottery tickets for an afternoon show here. The talent was wonderful. Like those actors sang better than 98% of pop singers out there. The costumes and set were astonishingly gorgeous. The staff are extremely astute at ensuring everyone has a great experience (annoying phones away!) Only con was the "juke box" style of the play was very distracting and cheesy (where they weave in modern day pop songs) albeit creative, but I recognize that this is a preference - some people may love this style. Of the 40+ Broadway shows I have seen, this was the worst. The cast is talented, so this is a critique of the show writing itself. It's an amalgamation of over 70 pop songs with very little dialogue, and no original scores. You might as well attend a 2000s pop tribute concert instead. I wish I had left during intermission. It was unoriginal, uninspired, and soul-less. That may seem like a harsh review, but see it for yourself and any Broadway vet will agree. A quick Google search of how the show won 11 Tony awards quickly confirmed it was because it was one of the few Broadway musicals that debuted in 2020 before Covid shut down NYC, thus making for slim pickings for Tony judges that year. I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 only because the sets and costumes were fun. read more

Amazing!!! 5+ stars over and over again - I'd recommend Moulin Rouge to every person I know. This show in NYC was phenomenal, and, of course, the storyline is so good! The actors were very engaging and made it feel so real, especially the two main characters - they were captivating to watch. We bought tickets in advance for the upper level, first row. This location was superb because you could see the entire stage and you didn't have to strain your neck looking up at anything. The show was approx 2.5 hours plus a 15 intermission, but went by rather quickly because the performances were just so good. Absolute perfection, in my opinion! We went to this show on a whim as we had nothing planned for the night. The show, while not THE best production or talent I've seen, felt like it would be a great starter musical for those who "don't like musicals." It was very entertaining, weaved a lot of modern pop songs into the story very intelligently, maintained interest with all the variety in the scenes, had humor, love, and intrigue. Overall a good, "fun" show for the every day man. We saw the show on Saturday, December 21, at 8:00 PM. The doors opened at 7:20pm to allow time for security checkpoints. Be aware: the performance begins promptly, so latecomers will be seated only at management's discretion. Don't be that person. The show runs about 2 hours and 40 minutes with one 15 minute intermission, which is more towards the end than the middle of the show. The Al Hirschfeld Theatre is located at 302 West 45th Street between 8th & 9th Avenues. Our Seats were in Mezzanine, Front Center, H 101 & 102 (we paid $287 total for these). Much different perspective than you get sitting in Orchestra, but I wanted to try them out since I didn't care too much about this show and there were no big headliners when we saw it. Being in Mezzanine feels like you are watching the show "happen further in front of you" versus being in the Orchestra where you feel the energy and like you are more "engaged IN it." I can see some having a preference, or rather indifference, to sitting here versus Orchestra when on a budget. The seats were perfectly acceptable and a good couple hundred dollars cheaper than the other shows we saw this trip. So, if you are on a budget, don't stress. Mezzanine is A-ok (see my pic for the exact view from our seats). The Women's restroom is located 1 flight down from the Orchestra level, and the Men's restroom is on the Mezzanine level. They are very welcoming to all and vocally encourage you to use the restroom that best fits your gender identity or expression. Very thoughtful to proactively state this. The coat check is located 1 flight down from the Orchestra level. The charge is $3 per item. If you aren't a big musical buff, this is a fun and safe one to see. read more

I reviewed the Al Hirschfeld theater separately (but will paste below the production review if I have space). I am not a musical fan. I've never seen the movie. I had no idea what it was about besides maybe a dance or cabaret club. I've just been trying to see all the longer running musicals (I've recently seen Hadestown, Book of Mormon, and now Moulin Rouge) that everyone raves about, and you can get premium seats for decent prices since they've been around a while. I really loved this production! The storyline is "okay," a cabaret star must entertain the whims of a possessive duke in order to keep her club open, while actually being in love with a poet and song writer. I think the reason I enjoyed this much more than the other musicals is it's, surprisingly, pop based. In fact, it reminded me of my age, because I thought, "oh, these songs are so recent that they must re-write it from time to time." Nah, Bad Romance, Rolling in the Deep, Only Girl in the World, etc. are mid-aughts and elder millennials just keep thinking that was a few years ago. Some other riffs include Material Girl, Chandelier, an awesome rendition of The Police's "Roxanne." Regardless, this is a catchy, fun, high-octane, ultra-stimulating production with great acting, talented voices, gorgeous and colorful costumes, intricate, dazzling sets. It runs a little long at over two and a half hours including a 30-ish minute intermission (which you'd feel better about if you get the 50 dollar VIP lounge ticket with private bathrooms). But you don't notice the time because everything is so beautiful and fast-paced. I am thinking about taking a couple of my friends to see this play because I think they would love it. Review of Al Hirschfeld theater (which is done separately as well, but I included it here because it does include some logistics of the show): Easy entry into theater. Orchestra is directly to the right of the entrance, so that's easy enough. There are stairs and I'm pretty sure no elevator access. Staff is efficient, professional, and helpful. The set is absolutely amazing. So provocative and flashy, a feast for the eyes. Tons of lights and colors and sparkle. The set spills over into the rest of the theater. I sat in row C, which is a little closer than I thought, but I enjoyed the seat. The stage set up is a large stage with a runway down the middle of the "cancan table" section (perpendicular to the stage), then a runway that runs parallel to the front of the stage, along row C. In row C, you are DIRECTLY in front of the runway. So close the attendants tell you not to place anything on the stage. I'm only 5'2, but my sightline for the large stage was perfect. I didn't have to crane my beck. When performers came up to the walkway directly in front of me, I had to look up, but it was awesome to be RIGHT THERE. Before the show, performers come out and give you a cabaret type show. Because I was front and center, a lot of them stopped and made direct eye contact with me. There were times during the show I thought people were going to fall down on top of us (they were joking around of course)--that's how into the action you are. Probably some of the best seats in the house, but row D would be pretty good too. I wouldn't go to the cancan seats. You have to crane your neck AND turn around often to try to catch the action on the runways behind you (and there is A LOT). Seats aren't the smallest I've ever sat in, but they are tight. Leg room is fine in row C since you're in front of the stage. I love a theater with a lounge. And there aren't as many in NYC as you'd think. I can remember having a lounge experience at Lyric theater for Harry Potter and recently had a lounge experience at Cabaret (though it was an inconvenient pain in the ass). The Al Hirschfield theater has a very nice lounge and great VIP staff. And it's totally worth the 50 bucks. The attendant, Abel, was awesome. Very personable and fun. read more

We purchased last minute 50% off tickets from the TKTS booth in time square and got very good seats in center orchestra and had a perfect view of the show. The entire show is such an experience with beautiful cast and spectacular costumes. I enjoyed all the dancing and the mix of popular songs. Moulin Rouge is a must see performance. The soundtrack was so good I want to buy it. The costumes, set, performance, singing were all top notch. Boy George singing some of his songs at the end were everything. I personally like the 2nd half better as more of the acting and live scene evolved the love story. The first half had a lot of dancing. My husband and I usually sit up front but sat in the 2 nd floor mezzanine center. I didn't appreciate those seats because the speaker system is not as loud and you can literally hear patrons fumbling with wrappers, coughing, talking, etc.... Satine and Christian sang beautifully. The show is one of the best I've seen, from the costumes to the energy to the dancing to the fun themed pop music twist. It's a really fun show !! Fabulous costumes, staging in a stunning theater completely draped in red velvet & lace. Even the seat elevating cushion was red velvet. This was the 2nd time that I saw Moulin in a span of only 4 months. The lower Mezzanine is only 4 rows and there is not a bad seat except to the far right side because a huge Elephant prop blocks that side of the stage.. But row C or D are perfect. I would not have enjoyed sitting down on the cat walk or at the cafe seating, stick to lower Mezz or Orch but at least 10 rows back.. Old, opulent theater, one of the most beautiful with gold adorning the ceilings. Huge..This was a really big theater & seats were cozy. ** Get tickets at the box office & save a bunch of unnecessary fees. A fun thing to do if you're looking for a way to treat yourself or take out your visiting friends. The costumes and stage design were beautiful. I honestly felt Christian and the Duke's actor should have switched roles. The duke's acting & singing was incredible. I do recognize majority of the songs they're singing are parodies but nevertheless, Christian felt upstaged by him. I found the show to be pretty mediocre overall. I wasn't a fan of the modern jukebox song choices and really wish they had kept the elephant medley the same as in the movie. The main actress wasn't a very strong singer, and when she and the main actor sang together, their voices didn't blend very well, though the costumes and sets were incredible. The main male actor was a great singer. I was also disappointed that after purchasing tickets, they changed the start time to earlier just a week before the show, which ruined my plans beforehand. I even emailed the show to see if I could switch dates and seats but never received a response. Still, it just wasn't for me. The movie is much better. read more
