I didn't really know what to expect since it's centered around a place called Gander, a Canadian province of Newfoundland during 9/11. Come From Away is one of the best shows I've seen on Broadway. The show is amazing! 90 minutes of pure entertainment. It's a musical about the 911 flights that had to land in Newfoundland. It hits all the emotions in a short time. I found myself laughing, falling in love with the characters and even felt a tear here and there. There's no intermission, so before you know it the shows over. I paid full price through American Express but when my husband came to join me a week later, we were able to get tickets at the TKS booth in Times Square for $75 a piece ( which was more than half off what I paid the first time!) and for both shows I was able to sit center orchestra 6 rows back. Totally enjoyable both times. The music was great and the actors were even better. I highly recommend this show. If you're in NYC between 1/18 - 2/13/22 check out NYC Broadway Week -they're offering 2 for 1 tickets on some great shows and this is one of them. read more

So after the 9/11 Attack the US Airspace was immediately closed. And airplanes already in the air were instructed to land at the nearest airports. About 38 planes and a total of 6,000 passengers from all over the world landed in a small airport called Gander, Newfoundland in Canada. Gander is this tiny town in Canada so the locals there had to quickly figure out how to accommodate all these people. Come From Away tells such a warm - hearted and inspiring story about how the folks in Gander welcomed these travelers into their homes for about 4 days. It's such an emotional yet powerful play about humans helping humans from all over the world . Our lives gets interrupted, but at some point we must continue living no matter how tough things get. This show was sooooo good! The cast was amazing in how they played multiple roles of islanders or plane people. The power of their voices throughout the musical was strong. The band was great too, appreciated their "screech off" at the end. We got tickets from the TKTS booth and ended up 5 rows from the stage just a bit to the right. Great seats, we missed nothing. The set was well done and how the cast used the different chairs and arrangements was cool. I'd highly recommend this show on Broadway (before it ends on October 2nd!) or if it comes to a theater near you. Easily in my top five favorite Broadway shows I've ever seen! I came in to the show with absolutely zero knowledge of the background of the plot. This is an interesting story regarding a small town (Gander, Newfoundland) during September 11, 2001. There's only a dozen actors, but each one plays several different roles perfectly. I was amazed at how well they could make you feel many emotions. You will laugh, smile, and cry all throughout this perfect performance! The orchestra is also solid. They do a good job of bringing the energy to the show. Overall, I was so impressed at how amazing this show was. Even sitting in the mezzanine, do you have a great view of the stage that is unobstructed. The theater itself is extremely beautiful and well-built. Acoustically it really helps make the show come to life. Go to the show. Do not skip this if you have the opportunity. Seen CFA on Christmas day and it was definitely a great way to spend the holiday. It wasn't the best show I've seen or even 1 of my favorites but I highly enjoyed it. The music and cast was amazing. There weren't many shows playing Christmas day and the ones that were playing I've seen except this 1 so I purchased tickets. I sat orchestra left and had a great view of the stage. Fantastic show, with a stellar cast, a great message, and a heartwarming story. I didn't actually know the true story behind Come From Away before I randomly chose this play to see on Broadway. I walked out of the theater immediately wanting to book at ticket to Gander. I honestly think that might be our next international trip. We ended up grabbing last-minute tickets with "limited view" - we were dead center in the very first row! It's not your typical place to see a play, but it's a great location for its own reasons; there were instances where the cast would make eye contact individually with us, and you could literally see them sweat as they belted out their lines. There were no incidences where we couldn't see the action happening on stage. If you were super short, though, you might struggle to see over the lip of the stage. Despite the large theater size, the vaccine and mask requirements (enforced!) made us feel safe. read more

I was lucky enough to win lottery tickets to a Sunday matinee showing of Come From Away a few weeks ago. We got first row seats, which were both amazing and a bit difficult to see the full stage. You can literally see the actors sweating and spitting! The show only runs about 90 minutes, so there's no intermission. It's not a big production compared to the other shows like Lion King or Wicked. It's sort of a one-set, barebones show, which is refreshing to see. Sometimes you don't need a big spectacle to tell a good story. The actors all play more than one role, which I thought was really fantastic. I was quite young when 9/11 happened and I admit I never really thought about what happened to the people on the flights that were all grounded after the attacks. It's amazing to see the story of the 38 planes / 6000 people who landed in the tiny town in Newfoundland. read more

What a performance. If you have any time at all, go see this show. The premise: when 9/11 happened, incoming flights to the US were diverted to Canada, to clear US airspace ASAP. Some flights landed in Gander, Newfoundland. A small town of less than 10,000 people suddenly had to accommodate an influx of 7000 passengers. - For more info, google "Operation Yellow Ribbon" - 12 cast members, 6 band members, no orchestra - 1hr40min, no intermission - The cast had to switch between multiple characters throughout the show and I loved how the accents switched too - What's different to other shows is that as the characters speak, the music continues in the background. At first it made hearing the dialogue a bit difficult. - Since it deals with quite heavy subject matter, there were bits of humor sprinkled here and there - At one point a woman was openly weeping behind me - Some band members joined the cast onstage during a couple of songs. That was fun to see. - Standing ovation at the end - After the cast took their bow, the whole band came out and jammed together for about 10 minutes. The audience was on their feet and it was a fantastic way to end the show. You hear about 9/11 a lot. The people who lost their lives. The family/friends related to those people. But what you don't hear as often is about those whose lives were impacted outside of that particular group. These Canadians from a small town offered everything they could to help. This incident had nothing to do with them. Yet they still created a safe haven for those who were momentary displaced. Faith in humanity restored indeed. read more

The performance made me laugh, made me cry, and made me long for the simpler time, seventeen years ago, before the world was forever changed by an act of cruel and unconscionable terrorism. Come From Away also reminded me that goodness does exist, and resides in the hearts of people everywhere, where it will answer when called. This performance also made me want to go to Gander, and thank each and every Newfoundlander personally. Bless them all. This is absolutely my favorite broadway show. I saw it for the first time in 2019 when I visited the city and I saw it another 3 times after I moved here and Broadway opened again post covid. The story and the characters and music are so beautiful. (I also read the book which wasn't told quite as well but still nice to read). I'm always so impressed how the characters seamlessly transition between characters, costumes, and accent while almost always being on the stage. There's such a good balance between heart wrenching real life stories and also humor. I went to the show for the closing weekend in October and got to meet Jen Colella (original cast pilot), Beverly Bass (actual pilot), and several others. I sobbed during the entire show and sobbed when I got to meet them. I was so so sad that the show closed but will have to settle for watching it on Apple TV! read more

Great show...I was shocked at how emotional I became during some of the scenes because I'm usually stoic but these characters inhabit your heart. That's all the more amazing because the actors play multiple characters and give them each depth, humanity and uniqueness. Performed without an intermission at a brisk 90 or so minutes, this is engrossing theater. Not all of the songs work but overall they are very enjoyable. The multiple stories are engaging but some are stronger than others and there is one particular one that felt a little forced and unreal, but overall very compelling. The entire cast is excellent. The way they switch characters with just adding a hat or putting on a sweater is astonishing. You rapidly know who each character is, even if you saw the same actor 15 seconds before in a different character. It's really something to see. This definitely made me want to find out more about Gander and look back at old news clips from that time. As a New York living in the city in 2001, this show brought back lots of emotions that I (usually) don't care to revisit, but the charm of this show can't fail but to renew your faith in mankind. For me, it's a must see. read more

My heart was so warmed after watching this musical. We were lucky enough to win rush tickets in the lottery. The seats we got were in the back orchestra section but were still great. We could see everything. The show is not a BIG production compared to some other shows. I was most impressed with the actors who all played several characters with different mannerisms and accents. I was never confused as to who they were playing. The Newfoundlander accents were great! Being from Canada I loved the Tim Hortons and Shoppers cameos. I felt so proud of this Canadian moment in history. It was so nice to hear the good things that were happening amidst the tragedy. The kids were fascinated that the actors all played so many different roles. It was amazing how the turn of a phrase and voice mixed with a hat helped turn the actors into different people. The props and sets are extremely simple - and it's thanks to this simplicity that the audience can appreciate even more so the talent of the cast. Fantastic show! We got tickets online just two weeks in advance for a Sunday matinee show. We were on the side of the orchestra (seats 13 and 15), row J (the 10th row), total cost $363 for two tickets. We were close enough to easily see the actors' expressions! However, being so low and to the side, we missed a little bit of action on stage right. The Canadian jokes were great, the acting great, the set creative, and the actors each playing multiple roles with just the switch of a jacket or a hat just brilliant. Won the Broadway lottery for this show so came to see it on a weekday evening, lots of empty seats. It was fantastic! I'm amazed at how 12 people can all play multiple parts and the choreography of moving the furniture and changing clothes. Really awesome music too as most people are singing for each song. My friend got us standing room only tickets for only $29 by lining up in the morning. Since the show is only 90 minutes, it's actually fairly bearable to stand for that long. The view is unblocked and the only props were just chairs on stage so it was fairly simple. Overall, enjoyed the show and would thoroughly enjoy it. I was seated in the left orchestra section and nothing was really cut off from my view of the stage. The show was both heartwarming, and funny. My sister noted that the humor also wasn't just for humor's sake but also continually helped progress the plot and I also caught her crying multiple times. The production was small but it really added to the value since I loved how the cast had to switch characters and accents. The music and band were also exceptional. CFA seems simple in its premise and in its method of telling the incredible stories of the people of Gander Newfoundland in the wake of 9/11, but the powerful stories and people carried me away. This is not one of the splashiest shows, with no grand costuming and scenery, but is one you will not forget. The brilliant use of scenery and props transports you, despite being relatively simple. The costuming and makeup is used to so beautifully allow the cast to transition between characters portrayed, and combined with their incredible talent leaves no question in the audience's mind of which character that cast member is in that moment. The stories themselves are so very powerful, not because they are large and grand, but because they are simple-- simply welcoming the world into their small town and creating a haven for the plane people. I also loved being able to see the musicians in the trees on stage, truly enjoying their work and being so into the show despite not being very visible to most. And then, when they were part of the scenes and full stage, they stole the show. Amazing. A few Notes: -I saw the show with two understudies, and have zero regrets because I can't imagine that it could have been any better. - Stage door brought everyone out after with smiles and sincere thank yous to us, despite us needing to thank them for delivering the performance in such a breathtaking way. - There are boosters available for the first few rows. I was orchestra left in the front, and appreciated that as a shorter person. However, once the show started, there was a perfect view despite hearing concerns all around before. read more

Come From Away is my favorite musical. It is about what happens after 9/11 when the US Airspace was closed. The airplanes too far enroute to turn back were diverted to a small town in Canada. Gander, Newfoundland is the town that took in the refugees and showed kindness in their time of need. The real life story is beautiful and touching. It is a roller coaster of emotions but so worth learning about the remarkable story. From the moment the cast walked on set, the show brings you into the story. The cast is uniquely talented as they play multiple roles, both plane people and those from Gander. The set is minimal as that is not important to the story. The cast changes characters just by changing accents and clothing. Some of the characters are based on multiple real life people's stories. The show is an ensemble with none taking the spotlight as they are all just as important and talented. They go back and forth with their characters so easily just shows their remarkable talents. The really click too as you can tell how close the cast members are as the seamlessly move the chairs and set around. Most of the cast has been together since 2015 when the show started in California. Jenn Colella has a solo number of Me and the Sky about Captain Beverly Bass who was the first female captain on commercial flights in the US. Ceasar Samayoa has a powerful scene as Ali. I got to meet some of the cast members after the show and they are so humble and truly kind. Everyone I met was genuinely thrilled to meet some fans. This is a standing ovation show and one that you will not forget. read more

This was one of the most amazing plays I've ever seen. It's a play about 9-11 that I saw on 9-11 and we were in seats 9 and 11 in row P. It was a surprise anniversary present to my wife. The play is spectacular in every way. The staging, the music was brilliant, the characters that were portrayed were real and the plot was in context unforgettable and memorable. Newfoundland is a place right now I want to go visit. People are the salt of the earth fare. And what they did for all those planes that was stranded when American air space was closed on September 11, 2001 Was amazing! The play may just so sing. It made you have such faith in the goodness of humanity. It was uplifting in every way. And it was a love story. It was funny. it was a story about the diversity of the world and how one of the most horrific historical events could cause us to be suspicious of people who were from the Middle East. Which was real for everyone at that time. They treated that reality with such sensitivity. All characters had such dignity. I was hesitant at first because I thought God who wants to see about a terrorist attack in New York City but it wasn't that at all. The play was about the best of us. I really didn't know what to expect when I heard about this show but having lived through the tragedy of 911 all I ever learned what was constantly making headlines during that time. On that dreadful day hundreds of flights were ordered grounded and security heightened that no air traffic was allowed until given the clearance to fly again. "Come from away" tells the story of one of those flights originally bound for Texas but diverted to Gander, Newfoundland where you can feel the emotion of those on that flight stuck in the plane for hours and then forced to live in emergency shelters set up for them hastily by the mayor and townspeople for several days. The set is simply based. There are chairs and tables sitting on a turntable to see the action played out. On the back left and right ends are makeshift trees hiding a bar and the band that plays the musical selections with half of them on each side. The characters change rapidly from the mayor and townspeople of Gander to the passengers who were on board the flight we are watching. Many parts are played by the same people but with minimal costume changes you can tell pretty much who's playing what part. The show offers comic relief here and there. My only difficulty was missing out a few of the song lyrics since they were sung so fast but I got the point they were trying to make. The showstopper was pilot Beverley not only acting as one of the first female pilots but her song "Me and the sky" tells the tale of how she achieved that goal of becoming a pilot as women were granted more equality during the last part of the 20th century. Some of the stories of the passengers are very touching and makes you want to cry. The music is outstanding. With a bunch Irish jigs thrown in what more can you ask for? Even after the curtain call the band came center stage to showcase a few tunes. "Come from away" is currently touring the country if you are unable to see it in NY. The musical is about 1 hour 45 minutes long with no intermission. It won a Tony award for best direction of a musical in 2017. Definitely a must see! read more

Of course this production has 5 stars on yelp. It was stunning!!! Beautiful mix of brilliant acting, catchy songs, and plenty of comedic and heartwarming moments. It's a 12 person cast with a simple set design that inspires your own creativity to imagine the story unfolding for yourself, kinda like a novel. The fact that it was inspired by a true story made it all the more fascinating and it was all based on hundreds interviews the script writers did with Newfoundlanders and people on the flights that were diverted following 9/11. They really knew how to develop multi-dimensional characters quickly so that you can connect with them but not feel like it was forced. Length:1 hr and 40 min with no intermission Space: We were towards the front on the side aisle so we couldn't see the whole stage and the lack of visibility did not affect the show too much. She destroyed the entire atmosphere of the theater and I nearly asked her to find me a refund so I could leave. I really enjoyed this tribute to "The Rock" Was stationed there at Harmon AFB during the 60's and have been back at least 40 times. Newfoundlanders are really nice people with a very unique sense of humor. Dry and witty. I gave it 5 Stars but would have hoped this musical would have included the most popular Newfie Song ever: "I's the B'y" (Pronounced "eyez the buy") Lyric: I's the b'y that builds the boat...I's the b'y that sails her! All men in Newfoundland are "B'ys" pronounced "Buyz" e.g. Here comes the ' Buyz ' "Yes Buy" etc They left out the famous saying that "Screech's" you in: "Long may your big jib draw!" which means may you live a long life. Almost all Newfoundlanders never just say yes or no to a question. Yes or No are almost always followed with a noun e.g. Yes my dear.....No my love.....Yes my darling...Yes my son. An expression most popular: Lord, Thunder and Jesus my son! Anyway..enough of me....It was a great tribute to a great Canadian Province.. and deserved the 5 minute standing ovation! read more

This show was great! We saw it a couple of months ago from this post. It brought me back to that day in September, 2001. The music was great as well as the script. It wasn't a "wow" experience like some Broadway plays but it was good just as well because it was based on a true story. It makes you feel good about humanity and how people come together in times of need especially since now we are all quarantined due to Covid19. If you haven't seen it, when the theaters open again would be a great time to see it. I cried several times as did many people in the audience because it gets you "there". I've only seen Hamilton once with no intention of ever seeing it again. I've seen Come From Away three times, once in Toronto and twice on Broadway. This production is not the typical melodramatic musical. Throughout the performance the actors elicit a menagerie of feelings from the viewers. I watched men and women around me laugh, cry, and cheer. The power of the drama is that the stories are true AND it's a feel good show that doesn't rely on a negative point of view (such as a suicide or a misunderstood protagonist) or tawdriness (such as foul language or blatant sexual references). There is a foul word or two, but nothing a middle school student hasn't encountered. It is educational and emotional, a combination that is severely lacking in much of today's entertainment. Also, it's a musical that a family with adolescents can enjoy together. It's telling that in over 600 sold out Broadway performances and more than 150 before that (Toronto, Seattle, Washington D.C, La Jolla), every show has ended in a standing ovation. Sidenote: My mother (76 years old) and daughter-in-law (mid-twenties) also give it 5 stars. read more

First, for those who haven't heard of the play, here's a quick synopsis: In Orphans, two orphaned brothers are living in a decrepit North Philadelphia row house. Treat, the eldest, (Foster), supports his damaged younger sibling Phillip (Sturridge) by petty thievery, and makes the house a virtual prison for the seemingly simple-minded Phillip. One night he kidnaps a rich older man, Harold (Baldwin), who turns out to have his own motives and becomes the father figure the boys have always yearned for. The casting was phenomincal - Baldwin, Foster and Sturridge are perfect for their parts. It's incredibly dark and humorous at the same time, bringing laughter and tears often in the same breath. If you haven't seen the show already, do so if only to witness Sturridge, who owns the stage with all of his childlike innocence, voice, and gymnastics. Put on your yellow loafers, give your friend an "encouraging squeeze" and enjoy the show! read more

The most incredible part was watching the story of 9/11 told to an audience where many (teenagers) were not alive at the time but now have a sense of what happened during that week. I would recommend this show for all ages 11+ and for the message it sends about loving one another and learning to love, and the kindness of strangers that can come when it is most needed. read more
