Pilsner outside while we wait for our food
    Megan M.

We were wanting some local, german food and we are SO happy that we ate here. I now understand why this place was rated #1 for local food. The meatballs and schnitzel were DELICIOUS and everything was very fresh. The pickles even reminded me of the ones my grandma used to make :) We don't know the German language, but the owner and servers made sure to make us feel welcome and still make some jokes with us. The Pilsner beer was really good and I don't really even like beer that much. We might have to go back before our two day trip in Berlin ends

If you're looking for authentic German food, then head over to Stadtklause! It's a little ways away from the tourist spots but it's totally worth going to. The interior is quaint and narrow. You'll be seated with other Germans so get comfortable (normal there btw and who knows, you might make some friends!). I don't know how to speak German, not even a lick of it, but I did try and the owners were really happy that I did lol. They were so welcoming and even joined me while they had their dinner as well! Their schnitzels are DELICIOUS. The chicken was moist and the bread was fluffy. The potatoes were really creamy and the pickles... oh God, I can literally eat a whole jar of them. I had a .5L Pilsner and well, in the land of beer, I really can't say it was bad beer because it wasn't. It was so good on a hot day! Welcoming staff, great food, and awesome conversations. Would 100% return if im ever in Berlin again. Danķe!

Authentic, "neighborhood joint" type vibe-so glad we stopped in. We had some pils and split a schnitzel. Good beer, excellent food, friendly service for 22€. I will definitely revisit this spot in Berlin

The best meatballs and potatoes during our week in Berlin!

This pub is quite small but seems always packed. It's located fairly close to the hotel where we were staying, the Crowne Plaza Potsdamer, so we went a few times for dinner and the food is really good. The menu is limited (mostly open faced sandwiches, meatballs and schnitzel) but it's tasty. A few wines and good beer. This place is not fancy but the atmosphere is fun. Cash only!

Best meal in Germany! Fortunately, previous yelpers, let us to this fantastic, cozy neighborhood place. It is very informal, and that adds to the ambience. Great local beer food at affordable prices. We were a little surprised to learn that they are CASH ONLY so be prepared! We sampled the pork schnitzel, meatballs, and salad. Excellent, and served in the hearty portions. Service was good. The waiters were very comfortable with English, and quite friendly.

I found this little place here on Yelp when looking for dinner on our recent trip to Germany. We had just arrived in Berlin and didn't want to venture super far from our hotel so I was looking for a place we could easily walk to and I found Stadtklause. Upon arrival we weren't certain if we should seat ourselves or wait to be seated but a friendly gentleman whom I believe may have been the owner pointed us to a little table outside on the sidewalk which was perfect. I ordered the Wiener Schnitzel and my husband ordered the meatballs and we were both really happy with our meals. The fried potatoes were crispy and buttery and I loved the pickles and cabbage salad that came with both entrees. The schnitzel was thin and crispy and very tender and the meatballs were wonderfully seasoned and perfectly cooked. I have even been looking for a good German meatball recipe to attempt to replicate those meatballs! If you're looking for a great German meal in Berlin I highly recommend this cute little place!

I found this place on Yelp and have to echo other's opinion that this is a great dinner option. The atmosphere is very laid back, like a neighborhood pub. There's lots of seating outdoors as well as on benches inside so it's a great place to meet for a group. Limited menu, but everything they do, they do well. Beer selection is down to pilsner and a dark beer. Very generous portion to price ratio and even more importantly, very friendly staff. We were greeted and seated right away on a Friday night. They have English menus and were pretty welcoming of tourists. My husband and I got the meatballs with gurken, schnitzel, and a small mixed salad to share as well as a pilsner each. This was the perfect amount of food. I really liked both dishes but my husband said he preferred the meatballs. The meat was perfectly seasoned and went well with the mustard and pickled veggies. The bread went really well with all of the entrees but I may be biased as American bread is too sweet. The small salad was a great size to share. I don't normally like pilsners but the one they serve here was great. I would highly recommend coming here.

I'm getting to know my new neighborhood. This one is close to Mitte, on the edge of Kreuzberg, but still close enough to walk to Mitte. We had a reservation at the top of the dome but the table we got was right in the entrance with all sorts of people coming and going, totally distracting so we forgo our reservation and just did a tour of the Dome. I had this place on my to-do this on this trip as it's very neighborhood like restaurant which also has a decent amount of beer selection and your usual beer hall food. The menu is very simple. Really felt like local restaurant for local beer drinkers but clearly lots of tourists too. The table behind us were Italians. We ordered the schnitzels and also the meatballs and an open sandwich. All very tasty. The beer on tab is very good. The meal for four was just over 50 euro. They only take cash so be sure to bring cash instead.

If you want some of the best Schnitzel in a rustic setting with much history, Stadtklause is the place. I have to say the service didn't start out very strong but progressed & ended very well with smiles and our server taking a picture of us. We ordered the mixed sandwiches (small) which was a lot of food as a starter for two people. (Could have been a meal by itself). Think Charcuterie with sliced sandwich bread. Meats & cheese were tasty. For main, we both ordered the Schnitzel which was excellent. Perfect amount of breading & very tender. A lot of food-we could have shared one. The added egg option looked really appealing also but so much food...we paired it all with the draft Pilsner which was very good This is cash only so bring those Euros. Overall, wonderful experience and excellent value for money!

My family and I were wandering around the area trying to find a place to eat and we're so glad we stumbled upon Stadtklause! It looks small from the outside but it's actually pretty spacious inside and quaint. The inside had a historic and pub feel to it and was surprisingly crowded on a Monday night. Out of all the restaurants we went to in Berlin, Stadtklause felt the most local and authentic. Our server was quite nice and helpful to explain the items on the menu. We were a group of four and we ordered the medium set of mixed open sandwiches to share. I loved the concept of the open sandwich, the serving was huge and plenty filling for our group! I wish I was able to try more of their dishes but I highly recommend this place if you're around the area, well worth it and you can't beat the price!

XXL set of mixed open sandwiches with meatballs and pork cutlet (Schnitzel). Enough food for two or more people!

Was great all around! Their meatballs are amazing~ Don't have time to say more. Just go and enjoy! One note I must say though: While the place is open late, they stop serving food around 10pm or so. I recommend calling ahead to find out.

Discrete and local on the outside, warm and welcome on the inside. Small and busy place that caters both in german and english. Nice staff that likes to joke with guests. Food was delivered surprisingly fast and was very yummy. As a beer lover I would have wished for more.to choose from. Prices between 5-9€. + Atmosphere, food and service - Only two beers on tap and four on bottle

Walking in the door gives you the feeling of dining in a Bavarian beer hall where there are plenty of locals enjoying the atmosphere. For us tourists, photos are included for most of the menu selections. I tried their signature dish: knuckle with cabbage and a potato dumpling. Even the half portion was huge! The veal schnitzel and steak entrees were also delicious. My server spoke little English, so knowledge of German would be a plus if dining here. The restaurant seems to be known for their beer and has quite a selection, however, a smaller wine menu is also available. I would definitely recommend making a reservation or coming early. As my friends and I were leaving, the line for entry was out the door.

Inside, the design leans toward a hybrid of a traditional German restaurant and modern luxury: dark woods, crisp table settings, and ambient lighting create an upscale but comfortable atmosphere suitable for all occasions ranging from date nights, celebratory dinners, or refined travel meals. The general vibe feels more sophisticated than casual tourist spots, with a bustling (yet not overwhelming) ambiance. Patrons range from international tourists to locals grabbing a drink after work, and a cosmopolitan mix of languages echoes throughout the space. After a 4-hour walking tour of Berlin, our group of eight was hungry for a hearty German meal. The same morning, we made a reservation for our party of 8 for 6:30pm later that night, and we appreciated the fact that the reservation process for large parties is easy and convenient. Additionally, When we arrived at the restaurant, we were immediately seated at a large table, and our waiter kindly directed us to a QR code with a translated English menu complete with pictures. The menu itself is extensive, with a range of options (from the more familiar pretzels and schnitzel to German classics like Pork Knuckle and Munich Bratwurst). Our server was charismatic and friendly, joking with us and guiding us through his favorites on the menu. When it came time to order, he asked us if we could order in the dishes' real German names (which we subsequently butchered), and he graciously corrected our pronunciation and explained any questions we had about some of the more traditional items. Some members of our party ordered their Ofenwarme Brezn mit Fassbutter (Pretzel with Warm Butter, €3,90): a generously-sized pillowy pretzel, generously salted and served with a creamy knob of decadent butter. For my entree, I selected the Halbe Haxe (€17.80), which is a half portion of crispy pork knuckle with Bavarian sauerkraut and a bread dumpling. For being a half portion, this dish was absolutely huge (with the bone, the knuckle was almost the size of my head!). The exterior skin had been wonderfully crisped up, almost like a German chicharron, whereas the interior was a mix of shreddable "pulled-pork"-like meat marbled with succulent fat, all served atop a rich, savory gravy. The Bavarian sauerkraut had a slight tang to contrast the decadence of the dish, and the bread dumpling was dense, yet soaked up the gravy perfectly. This was the tastiest dish I sampled during my time in Berlin, and certainly a great value as well. From asking my friends, other great plates included their Saftiger Schweinsbraten vom Schopf (€19.90 - a roast pork dish with bread dumplings, potato dumplings, gravy, and Bavarian sauerkraut; very similar to the Halbe Haxe but with what seemed like pork loin), 3 ECHTE Kalbsfleischpflanzer (€21.40 - three succulent veal meatballs with mashed potatoes, gravy, and buttered onions), and Handgeschabte Käsespätzle (€17.40 - homemade cheese noodles with mountain cheese and pear, topped with fried onions and served with a side salad; basically a bougee Bavarian mac and cheese, and a great vegetarian option). Two members of our party also ordered their Ausgezogener Apfelstrudel (€8.60), which was a sumptuous apple strudel with perfectly al-dente apples, flaky pastry, and warming spices, served with ice cream and a caramel-like sauce. In terms of price point, Maximilians sits in the moderate to premium range for Berlin restaurants: obviously pricier than your average beer hall or currywurst stand, but fitting for its polished service, urban location, elevated cuisine (with huge portions, might I add), as well as its large audience of tourists. If you're ever in the area, I would highly recommend Maximilians, and I'll certainly be back to sample some of their other colossal dishes!
