The French fry's were good, however I was disappointed with the Chicago style hotdog.

Eureka!!! At last, perfect Chicago dog without the airport. One of my rituals when traveling through Chicago O'Hare airport was to always stop and get a hotdog a Chicago hotdog because you could only get them in Chicago or so I thought. we are living on a boat now and I was at West Marine. New area. Home Depot right next door. Right next to Home Depot Chicago hot dogs. Perfect. So I called Peggy to see if she had eaten lunch she hadn't I said how's the Chicago hot dog sound here She said OK. Keep in mind she's not a big fan of eating hotdogs. Must be something to do with being this South Dakota farm girl. So anyway I go in the car is loaded with groceries the last thing I should be doing I was stopping but I it's a Chicago style hotdog right down to the bun. I'm glancing over the menu and there's a lot of other options one of them was the onion rings but I was crunched on time so I didn't order any. Somebody else smarter than me did order the onion rings because I saw them come up later my God they looked awesome! Next time. So I get home with my bag of four hotdogs Peggy never eats two so I was just getting a spare to throw in the refrigerator for later. Again, I'll say this Peggy never eats two hotdogs never never never. Until today. She ate my spare hotdog. I was heartbroken I should've bought five. If you haven't figured this out by now let me spell it out to you if you're looking for a diner they have hamburgers and other stuff too but this place is worthy of checking out and the great thing is, it's a mile and a half from our boat not even as a crow flies. I still can't believe it as I'm wrapping this up Chicago dogs just a Stones Throw. Life is looking pretty good. read more

Stacks is a great place to grab a little taste of Chicago eats. They have limited hours so you need to be aware of that if you are planning to visit. The place is super casual, with limited seating. The staff is super friendly and brought our food to our table and checked in on us as well. We tried a variety of Chicago favorites with crinkle cut fries and onion rings. I decided to try the Chicago Hot Dog this time for lunch. Stacks's has this dog tasting like you will find at a good Chicagoland hot dog place. Poppy seed bun, Vienna beef hot dog, with a snap to it, when you bite into the casing. The condiments are applied in the correct order. Mustard, sweet relish, onions, tomatoes, sport peppers. There was also a dill pickle spear. One thing about the sport peppers, they didn't ask me if I wanted them like many Chicago spots would. They just put them on. I didn't notice any celery salt, but honestly the hot dog is salty enough. Taste was spot-on. While I would of rather had fresh cut fries, the crinkle cuts were still tasty. read more

The fries are hot and crispy and the Italian beef was amazing! I got extra peppers on it and was not disappointed. My son got the same and almost didn't finish it. Great way to end a beach day by dining outside. They brought the food straight to the table and the staff was friendly. read more

It's a small, humble local dive and absolutely epic! They specialize in Chicago style Italian beef and sausage and it doesn't disappoint. The Italian beef was juicy, great flavor with a lot of sweet and hot peppers. That's all we had and we can definitely recommend it! They have a few other options including Italian sausage and combo beef/sausage. Sorry no pics of food, we scarfed it down too quickly! But what really set them apart was the 3 ladies working the day we came. We were running late and arrived right before closing. We called ahead to see if a large order was okay and when we arrived, they were all smiles, made us feel welcome and put our order together while chatting pleasantly. Probably as close to Chicago style as you're gonna get around these parts. Italian beef sandwich is a little bland. The portion isn't bad, bigger than Kozel's downtown. But, the taste is a far cry from Chicago. Beef was rather dry despite being soaked in juice. Fries are pretty good though. Be warned. The chili did not taste like chili, it tasted like plain ground beef. The hot dogs were very small and weren't really worth more than $1-$2/each due to the poor quality. The place is cozy but has outside seating if needed. I opted to eat inside and the eating area was clean and tidy. The order taker was kind and friendly and brought me my food when it was ready. Took maybe 5 minutes after I ordered. I tried the italian meatball hot sandwich and the beer battered onion rings with a small Coke and my order was just under 10 dollars. I paid cash but they do take cards. The sandwich was well seasoned and the bread was fantastic. I would say it had a garlic bread taste that was a pleasant surprise in every bite. The onion rings were cooked well, had good flavor, and an appropriate amount of salt. To sum it up, I'd recommend Stack's for their quick and friendly service, good prices, and well prepared food. I absolutely love Stacks, whenever I pass through Grand Haven I make time to swing by. Their Chicago style hot dogs are my favorite and the rest of their sandwiches are also great. Their crinkle cut fries are always hot and perfectly salted. Make sure you grab some of the fry sauce too! Since leaving Illinois, Italian beef sandwiches are very high on the list of what I miss most. Why the rest of the world hasn't caught on by now is beyond me, but it's very rare to find a place outside the Chicago area that claims to have Italian beef and gets anywhere even near the ballpark. Stack's nails it. I think I almost cried the first time I ate one of their sandwiches, I was so happy. Part of what makes them the real deal is the fact that they drive to Chicago themselves to pick up the important supplies, so what you get here is already what you'd expect from any good place in Chicago. Unfortunately I'm sure that's also a factor in the pricing, because it is a bit pricey compared to most places in Chicago, and the portions aren't quite as generous. But it's a heck of a lot cheaper than driving to Chicago for a sandwich, and it's SO worth it. It's also small like so many Chicago hot dog joints, but there are 6 or 7 tables so there's usually room to sit. Quality and taste-wise, it would be one of the "really good" places if it was in Chicago. Not the best but better than many. The combo (beef and sausage) is excellent, and it's served exactly as it should be - with a heap of giardiniera (also the real Chicago stuff) or sweet peppers. The hot dogs are real Vienna with all the required toppings. The fries are the best around. I'm sure the rest of the stuff on the menu is great too, but I can't get past my favorites enough to try anything else. Stack's is slightly off the beaten path, so a lot of people don't know they're there but it's far from inconvenient. If you can get to Home Depot you're already there. Their hours are limited, so if you want dinner you need to get there by 5:30. Sadly, they're closed on Sunday - which is when I often find myself in Grand Haven - but I've made many trips to GH only for Stack's. It's that good. It's a family-owned and run place that a lot more people need to know about. Do yourself the favor and go there now. If you're originally from Chicago it'll be like finding your long lost love. If you're not, you'll learn why Chicago is responsible for some of the best food in the world. You have no idea what you've been missing. read more

They have limited hours, so it was very hard for me to be able to stop in after work. I got the Italian beef, was a good size. Just very dry and bland. So I added my ma's giardiniera. Was alright. I also ordered the cheese fries, I opened up the container... and it was literally just shredded cheese on top. I was so disappointed. Quaint little spot in Grand Haven to grab an inexpensive bite, nothing overly impressive though. Got the Italian Beef with Coleslaw...the coleslaw was excellent, had a balsamic vinaigrette base and some flavor without the overly sweet thicker consistency that many restaurants employ. The Italian beef was unimpressive...meat was cooked right but was lukewarm (one of the line cooks held it under a heat lamp before handing it to me), had little flavor, and the bun was soggy from the pepper, carrot and celery mix they pulled out of a jar and didn't strain well enough. In all fairness, this place is more of a hot dog joint so that's probably the route I should've gone. 3 stars for the ambiance, coleslaw and the very affordable pricing. read more

Best Chicago Beef I've ever had and it's not even in Chi. For real! I just can't believe I had never tried this place until the other day. A previous reviewer has it all wrong. Hot Beef sandwiches in Chi town are all a little soggy. It's not from the juice of the pepper/carrot mix, it's because the Beef au jus is spooned over the sandwich or many joints will dip the whole sandwich in the jus. It's supposed to be that way!! I've been here 4 times. Each time got something different. Actually pretty good. but, for what you pay and what you get..it's kind of a turn off. Hotdogs are like 4.50 and fries aren't included. That's another 2.00 6.50 for 1 hotdog and SOME fries. Not alot of fries at all. It's kind of a slap in the face.
