At first this place looks like a hole in the wall, but then you notice the overflow on the other side of the wall. The atmosphere is very moody, which fits the hole in yhe wall 1st impression. The 2nd impression is it's very welcoming and gives small town vibes. I ordered a bowl of N'AWLINS GUMBO ($8) which has medley of rice, okra, Andouille sausage & chicken. It was very good and did give that southern feeling and would be especially good on a cold day. For my main I ordered the POLISH PLATE ($18)  two kielbasa, three pierogies, cabbage roll and kapusta. This was excellent. The Kielbasa were tasty and just as good as dedicated Polish restaurants. The Kapusta is a Polish cabbage dish baked with onions, mushrooms, and sauerkraut. It was excellent, I don't think I've had it before, I'll definitely be having it again. I didn't think I like cabbage, at the very least, I like theirs alot. The pierogies were excellent and only needed the sour cream to be perfect. If you like Polish food, I definitely recommend this dish! The service was very friendly and efficient. Sporty's Cafe down the street no longer serves breakfast, so I head to Stanz. Place is basically the same, outdoor seating on the sidewalk in the summer. The downside to that is there is a vinyl record shop next door that blasts unfamiliar music to all those outside! I would think that would violate a local noise ordinance. I ate inside at a table, there was a group of senior citizens talking very loudly, and this place doesn't have great acoustics. Plus they have music blaring as well inside at the bar. I probably would have been better off in the other section of the restaurant, but usually it isn't open on weekdays. Today it was. I got eggs and homemade corn beef hash. It was alright, a basic breakfast. With toast and coffee....came to $13.25+tip. I thought that was a bit steep for breakfast. Stanz is alright, but nothing special about it. read more

Food was good. I decided lunch looked better than breakfast after we got seated. I asked if I could switch from coffee to soda and the waitress said, of course, no problem. Then when the bill came I was charged $3.00 for one cup of coffee and an additional $3.00 for a Diet Coke. I asked and she spoke with the manager who affirmed the waitresses decision. I live in the neighborhood and my dog goes to the salon across the street. I had seen the sign for Stanz but hadn't thought about going until I saw some of the other reviews on Yelp. I stopped in on a snowy Saturday morning. The place was pretty quiet and they were training a couple of new guys that were just starting. I ordered my breakfast.. a simple one of eggs, bacon, hash browns and a biscuit (with a side of gravy). Was delicious and my coffee never dropped below 75%full. We came here because of the diverse menu that looked kid friendly. It was on the East side of Grand Haven, next to Frank's market. The beer was cheap and cold. The chicken fingers for the kids were made with real chicken and well seasoned. I had the polish plate... it was divine. Definitely a rival to the one at Legg's Inn and HALF the price. Stanz is a staple for the locals in the area. Food is consistent and pretty good. Portions are generous and drink refills are plentiful. Service has always been good. stanz has two items I find in dad to be so good and on the same menu, polish platter and gumbo. The pierogies are great and the cabbage could be served at Pulaski days. The gumbo is a good approximation of the Louisiana staple with large chunks of chicken. It's a bit on the mild side for my taste but still good. Worst dining experience in years. Place was dirty and servers have very unclean habits. The dust accumulation on the ceiling and walls was gross. Our server was doing some things that made me cringe. He was stacking food on top of food from the kitchen and bringing it out to tables. Our pancake had a plate ring on top of it. We came here for dinner on a busy Friday night. I suggest getting here before 6pm or after 7:30. There isn't much of a waiting area, but some friendly patrons at the bar squeezed us in while we waited. My husband and I both ordered the NY Strips, and they were fantastic. There was minimal seasoning, probably because the cut of meat itself was so good that it didn't require much extra. I can't get over how delicious it was. First and last time eating here. The food was absolutely awful, overcooked, and completely devoid of any kind of seasoning whatsoever. I know I said in another review that Kozak's had the worst burger in town, but Stanz is a strict contender. For the same price as this depressed hockey puck of beef you can just go down the street to Ray's and get 2-3x the food. And it actually has flavor there. Service was nice though.
