As R-Fellers has mentioned, MKE is replete with burger joints, so maybe in the end instead of searching for the one that is the unequivocal "OMGoodness meatgazms IDK WTF I have to instragram/tweet/yelp it right now or else my brain will explode on the back of the booth", you just look for one of many burger places that are good and within reasonable distance. The best analogy I have from my previous town is this one: Kuma's in Chicago is "supposed" to be the best. There are many out there that are quite good (Lockdown comes to mind). I'm not going to wait 2 - 3 hours to eat at Kuma's, because the ROI at eating at Lockdown without having to wait at ALL is superior. Onward.
Location: 5 out of 5
A quick 10 minute walk from my digs in the historic third ward. So many options when walking over, like which bridge do I want to take? Public transportation is available via the Greenline, and metered street parking is usually available right outside of their front door (or just park across from Colectivo where it's free).
Customer Service: 4 out of 5
Decidedly positive customer service experience each time that I've gone. I think the last two out of three times we've been helped out by a young lady named Emily who's total sweet, soft spoken, and just really pleasant to be around. The most recent time we sat at one of the high toppers by the bar and the barkeep working that night (Kiki?) was professional and efficient. Maybe not as outwardly charismatic as Emily, but I would still consider her to have been pleasant, and I felt like our entire table of 5 received very good service from her.
Decor/Ambiance: 4 out of 5
Could this be...a converted old industrial building? DING DING DING! I'm really starting to like the look of said repurposed infrastructure. I mean, just walk up either of the streets and take a look at Colectivo, the new Stonecreek, Prodigal, etc. and you'll know what I'm talking about. Old school brick (not red brick mind you) on the outside, exposed support beams on the inside, and huge windows/doors that at one point in time probably made it easy to schlep stuff back and forth. The tables and chairs match the beams in the sense that they at least look like they're old'ish, and are that deep pleasant dark brown color. The walls are muted and almost mud colored and the one thing I remember the most is their "Drink Locally Think Globally" mural. The patio is quite spacious, and I think I've seen at least one well behaved dog hanging out with its owner.
Selection of burgers: 4.25 out of 5
They employ a model that works elsewhere: allow the guest the opportunity to create his or her own burger in addition to offering signature burgers. When you build your own, protein choices are commensurate with what you'd find at other higher end burger places: ground beef, chicken, ground turkey, bison, black bean, and portabella. Toppings range from what you'd expect in terms of veggies, condiments, and cheese at a nicer burger place. Bread choices are neat - I've always been partial to the pretzel roll, but they also offer, inter alia, GF, sprouted grain, and texas toast. Sides are sides you'd see anywhere else that serves good grub: slaw, fries, sweet potato fries, macncheese, fruit, onion rings, etc. Out of the signature burgers, my favorite so far has been the hangover stack, as who doesn't love an easy over egg on top of some tasty meatz and fried bacon? As a rule of thumb - if you like gourmet burgers, and you have friends/family like to play it safe, the selection you'd find here would satisfy both parties.
The fried pickles on top of the burgers are an excellent touch. Yes, I made a new paragraph for that statement.
Other Schtuff: 3 out of 5 (weighted at 1/2)
Take away the burgers, and the menu starts looking lacking. Not entirely unexpected, but people can still find decent eats: nachos, wings, chicken tenders, salads, soups, etc.
Prost factor: 4.5 out of 5
Very extensive selection of local beers and spirits (they carry GLD items, woo hoo!) and a nice shoutout for the selection of classic and seasonal drinks. Classics like Manhattans and MMule, and seasonal like the pumpkin harvest something or other that I tried the other day. Pssst...the classic drinks are the best.
Value: 3.5 out of 5
A burger here can run you upwards of 17 bucks if you do a side dish upgrade. Drinks can be very reasonably priced (Wednesday nights, for example, you can get local Wisco craft beers for 2$ off), and their happy hour specials for beer usually include some type of BOGO deal. You can also get a "stack" of 'cheap' American stuff at 3 cans for 5$.
Overall: 4 out of 5
Nice and strong 4 star experience. This will likely always be go to spot for burgers since it's close, but I'm not going to go out and claim that this is the best burger place of [insert geographical area here.] It just happens to be a very good one that I can walk to. read more
