Update review: We've been to Stables many times and it became my favorite place! But the last time we went scared us off so bad, not sure if we will ever return. We went with a special coupon card that allowed us to get a free meal with a purchased meal. So we each got our normal dishes: wedge salads with extra ranch and extra bacon, ribeyes, and waffle fries. We also tried the sliders for the first time which was the best part of the meal this time. The salad came out with balsamic glaze which it never has before and the menu doesn't advertise this. The bacon was cold and not the same taste, the ranch was definitely different and not for the better. Then the steaks even had an off taste! They tasted mesquite or something-never like this before. It's just funny it tasted so bad when we had a freebie but wonderful all the other times. Surely they wouldn't do that on purpose? Because making the food worse won't get customers to return. Anyways, with the price as high as it is, this last time just ruined our thoughts of this place sadly. (This was March 28, 2025-a late anniversary meal). read more

Great food and great atmosphere. They always have a wide variety of specials and their quality always comes out predictably good. I had the soy glazed salmon which I have had several times and is my favorite on the menu. The garlics mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables are my go to sides. They had a red snapper with some delicious sauce on it and WOW, delightful. The Oscar special steak another person had and really enjoyed as well as the pork shank. Loved the authentic atmosphere--cozy and full of character. Came with a group and we had the upstairs all to ourselves, complete with our own dedicated waitress, which was a nice touch. Just a heads-up: there's no elevator, so everyone needs to be comfortable with stairs. I really wanted to love the food. The seafood bisque leaned a bit salty for my taste, the lobster bites were on the chewy side, and the pork shank came out a little tough. This has always been on my list of places to visit when in Terre Haute. Finally made it there and I was not disappointed! It is nestled near Downtown Terre Haute. They do have a parking lot with plenty of parking. Upon walking in, you realize it is really a Stable! The way it's set up is beyond different. It offers a warm and cozy feel. It's pretty dark inside but not too dark. We did have reservations and were seated right away in one of the "stables". :) The service was a 10/10. We never waited long for anything. We had several people attending to us and really made us feel special. We both ordered steak, NY Strip and Ribeye. Both were very good. Unlike many steak houses, the steak comes with a soup or salad, and a side. We both opted for potatoes and wedge salad. On average the steaks were around $65 so I think that's really a good value. Places in Indianapolis are $65 just for the steak. We also ordered dessert because...why not? We opted for the bread pudding. It was good, not amazing, but solid. I would say we will be back when in the area. Between the parking, the food value and the service, there wouldn't be a reason not to! read more

Oh my goodness. Great service by Cameron and all the crew tonight (Sunday 8/17). My husband has the NY strip cooked and flavored to perfection. Soup, bisque. Caesar salad was great. The mashed potatoes were incredible. Very tasty and a restaurant fav. I had the special, filet mignon with crab, asparagus and hollandaise sauce - incredible combination of flavors. We had a dessert another restaurant fav bread pudding. The best! The ambiance in the restaurant was incredible and the history card. A definite pick up and read. read more

The service is outstanding. Our waiter was very descriptive with specials, and gave personal recommendations for appetizers, entrees, wine, if people were on the fence or asked. It's an interesting place, and I could see regularly stopping here for a mixed drink before or after dinner elsewhere, Stables is very expensive. Our party all found the Prime Rib tough, and one expert ordered it medium rare, it should have been mouth melting tender. For the price, the cuts and cooking needs to be A+. Appetizers were very good, the crab cakes exceptional, all the salads were good, and very unique huge portions. This place is such a unique find nestled in Terre Haute. The ambiance is hard to beat and different from any place I've ever visited. The restaurant is in what used to be an horse barn and you can tell. The dim lighting with each table in an old stall and decor all horse/barn related made it a fun experience. The menu is a typical steakhouse so I expected a typical average dinner, but everything I had exceeded my expectations. The crab cake special came out as two huge burger sized crab cakes and they were so good. Meaty and moist - I didn't use any of the sauce it came with and actually would ask for it on the side next time so they aren't drowning in it. Same with the salad - it's a heavy dressing pour but the actual wedge salad was great. I had the shrimp dish for dinner and loved it. PLENTY of shrimp and the marinara/tomato based sauce that comes with was the perfect addition to elevate what could have been too simple of a meal. The side of sautéed veggies it came with was a large assortment and was buttery and flavorful. The drinks were great and I wish I'd tried dessert, but just a reason to go back! The service was good - we had a large group around the holidays and I'm sure they had their hands full with a packed restaurant. Beware, this restaurant apparently doesn't take walkins. You need a reservation to get a table. I was traveling through Terra Haute, IN on a Thursday and stopped in around 5pm. The dining room was maybe 20% full. The reservation desk turned away a couple in front of me as well as myself as a solo diner. The said all of tables were filled with reservations. Hard to believe with as big as the dining room (s) are and as early as it was in the middle of the week. I'm disappointed that I couldn't try it out as it is relatively well rated. What a huge disappointment! A few nights ago we tried Stables for the first time. The restaurant is beautiful and the staff was friendly enough to start with. Our steaks were decent, but we waited over an hour for our food! No one came by our table to explain why there was such a delay. When we were paying our bill there was no apology offered, and our server laughed at our saying we waited over an hour. For a meal which cost each of us $75 it was hardly worth it because of the poor service. We've been in better restaurants with better food and a lot better service for a lot less. read more

Well... I wish I could still give 5 stars but unfortunately dinner on Saturday night left something to be desired. What was still good? Cocktails and entrees were great. Caesar salad remains good. Lobster bite appetizer was just not good. I've had it before, and it was much better. The lobster was stringy and chewy and didn't taste right. Yes, the sauce that came with it could mask that, but who wants to mask lobster? You shouldn't have to. I'm not docking more stars for this, but the server we had was also terrible. He was condescending and assumed we had never been there (we've been many times). Each time I ordered something he acted like I didn't know what I was ordering. A spicy cocktail was received with "you don't want a spicy drink do you?" Yes, sir, that's why I ordered it. When I ordered the Caesar salad he said "now you haven't had our Caesar right?" And the icing on the cake... my salmon listed 3 options for preparation. I picked the one I wanted(sugar soy) and he instead told me it would be better to order a different preparation. I bet the chef wouldn't be too thrilled with this server recommending changes to the menu (without being asked), and I wasn't too happy with being talked to as if I didn't know how to order and dine at a nice restaurant. If this is the best terre haute has to offer... ill just stay home. The server was polite, the waitress staff as a whole were prompt and courteous, and since it was a birthday they gave us a dessert for free, which ive never had. Still the food was a step above an outback steakhouse. Asked for medium rare and received well done, the potatoes were salted to death and the cesar salad was a piece of romaine lettuce on top of about an inch and a half of cesar dressing and felt like I was eating dressing soup. For the prices they could buy a brita filter and stop serving faucet water, but its water. The bread pudding was bland but at least it was free so not really a problem, the appetizers were the best part and we're enough to hold us over. Lobster bites breaded thick with a good sauce I cant remember, and cheese curds since we had an adolescente with us. A full bar and the bartender accommodated us to whatever request we had, making a fresh sangría on the spot supposedly. They also had them cater at the wedding and my favorite thing was the wild rice. It was creamy and kinda sweet? I've been daydreaming about the rice ever since. The desserts are made fresh and they WILL run out. The bread pudding is the best I've ever had anywhere (especially if you love lots of the sauce). The restaurant always has daily specials as well that aren't on the menu. Everything is delicious and great for groups and a romantic dinner. The bar is also well stocked with fantastic cocktails. Our family of 4 adults enjoyed a great dinner for about 250, including drinks and dessert, comparable to a night at a steak chain but much higher quality. The staff was great and lots of fun. We had steak, seafood, and chicken, which were perfectly prepared, fresh, and delicious. The atmosphere was both relaxed and charming. The stables vibe was there, but they pulled it off without being a kitschy "barn." Instead, it had the feel of an old-school city steakhouse. I recommend the steaks, as they were superior to most Chicago steak restaurants' fare and cooked to perfection; the Ribeye was very flavorful, tender, and well marbled. The first thing our server said to us was " dessert is on us tonight"...we were pleasantly surprised by this and appreciated the gesture. We went to celebrate being done with the school year & it did not disappoint! The atmosphere is very unique, as the restaurant is actually old Stables converted. We walked in and there was a piano being played. Our table was huge and under a chandelier. I ordered a raspberry martini and it was amazing. I got the petite filet. To my surprise it came with 2 sides (super rare for an upscale steak house) I got a salad and sweet potato, both which were great! The steak was cooked perfectly. We made a reservation for two on a Wednesday night. We were seated in the Tool room and our table was either too high or the chairs were too low. I felt like I needed a booster. We started with the crab stuffed mushrooms and they were fishy. Did not taste fresh whatsoever. Next we had the onion soup- it was pretty good. The 11oz filet came 45 mins after our apps and the filet was sliced the the middle. I can only assume they cut it to check the temperature. It was cooked to medium rare per request but to cut open a steak prior to delivering to the table is a rookie mistake. The side of vegetables and baked potato were delicious. We use to come to stables a lot when we were I college. We came back to check it out since the food was always so good. The service on the night we went was terrible. Our server disappeared and we had to flag other servers down to order our food. We had been at Stables about 30 minutes waiting at the table before we finally ordered. When we got the Caesar salad the dressing was terrible. It did not taste like Caesar. The waiter insisted it was but there is no way. Then the creme brûlée tasted like eggs, extremely overcooked. We have been at Stables a few hours at this point and still haven't been able to flag someone down to get our checks. A 4 top seated about 20 minutes after us left before us. Comfortable seating. Can't think of a better looking restaurant in a small city that I'be visited. Just gorgeous. Beautiful bar area. 5 stars for service. All personnel clearly had our enjoyment in mind and worked hard to make it so. Most notable is that our waiter noticed that we didn't care for some of our food, inquired, and comped us with a dessert. Noble effort. He also knew the menu and was quick with recommendations. Staff was able to seemlessly move us from bar to table when our table was ready. 2 stars for food. It just didn't meet the standards of the other aspects of Stables. Had the crab bisque which was far too salty. Hard to donwith a bisque. Salads were nice, but drenched in dressings that were too rich. Again, gravy for the beef medallions too salty. Probably the mixed vegetable side for the porterhouse was the most disappointing. Vegetable tips were burned, yet were still oily and limp. We had a fruit cobbler dessert. The crust was stale and the fruit flavors were just overpowered by sugar. That seems like a lot of hate, but I will note that the porterhouse steak was terrific, and a really good value. I had high expectations for Stables because I love the other establishments in this restaurant group. Mogger's (across the street), and Richards Farm are two of my all time favorites. I can't rave about them enough. Stables has everything going for it, just the food needs some attention to meet changing tastes. For a good dining experience, I can still recommend Stables, but there's a lot more potential. read more
