It's Grand!! 1st time stopping at Sonka Irish Pub was a hit! We sat at the bar rail as that's our favorite place to sit. Sonka's has an extensive beer list as well as a HUGE food menu!! The bartenders were very friendly and made some great suggestions on the menu. I loved the old building and all the history attached to it! The eye of round Rueben on rye was absolutely delicious! Came here because it had good ratings on Yelp but was very let down. We ordered the beef stew and it was terrible - just a mash of tasteless mush of potatoes and beef. I played one of my favorite games, Yelp Roulette, and I found this highly rated Irish Pub. Parking was a little challenging because there is no parking lot but I found a spot on a nearby street. Sonka has all the decorations and everything you would expect from an Irish Pub...except one of my friends pointed out they didn't have Shepherd's Pie. But there is still a lot of good pub food here. I debated between a burger, sandwich, but I wanted something a little more unique. The Irishdilla caught my eye. It is a quesadilla stuffed with possibly the best corned beef I've had. I'm not a corned beef expert but it just had a moistness and good flavor to it. The corned beef sat on a thin potato cake patty with a horseradish style sauce with pepper jack cheese. The Irishdilla did not come with a side but the burgers and sandwiches come with chips and slaw. Something I loved about Sonka is the variety of sauces since I'm a sauceaholic. For that reason, I chose a half order of the onion tower with the french onion dip, BBQ ranch, and chipotle. Out of those 3 sauces, the BBQ ranch went the best with my onion rings. The french onion dip would be a worthy dip though with chips as it was thick and creamy. I made a mental note that boneless wings are 75 cents on Thursdays. I believe I will be back to try some wings and more offerings off of Sonka's menu. read more

The bright colors and scrubbed clean atmosphere allow one to dine comfortably among friends and family. The Irish themed decor offers a visual splash vintage Irish at its best. Irish dishes are offered with a homemade flavor served hot and fresh. Irish stew was my choice. Made with puréed potatoes and lean cuts of beef seasoned perfectly this offered a glimpse into old world cookery. The pesto grilled chicken salad with fresh salad greens topped off with crunchy sweet fried onions was delicious. Prices were in line with our expectations Reinhold was a server. He attended us well and had a fun sense of humor. This alone makes a difference in any dining experience I wholeheartedly give 4 stars for this local gem. read more

Kind of a divy local pub but comfortable. We we were in Terre Haute for a play at Rose and stopped here for a bite before the play. Service was ok, not bad not great. We started with Loaded Cheese Fries. They should render the fat out of the bacon ( it was very fatty and soft ) fries and ranch dip were fine. Husband and I got burgers. They were really good nice size patties on a very soft bun. I was super happy the bacon on the burger was crispy. Chips weren't too thrilling. Onion dip tasted like Deans French onion dip. I'm not a fan but my husband liked it. I ordered a Root Beer Float for dessert. It was good. Husband ordered the fried Oreos. All four of us said the batter on the Oreos was heavy and ruined the cookies. He ate his ice cream and left 3 or 4 cookies. Would come back for the burger. read more

This was a pretty good local spot to grab beer & food! The atmosphere is fun with lots of Irish decor and a bar scene. Also, the number of beers available on tap is one of the most variety I've found in Terre Haute. I'm a big fan of sours, and there were 2 on tap that were delicious. We also ordered the pretzel board which was really good, but heads up it doesn't come with cheese dip, just a spread. We ordered a dip as well & both were tasty. I ordered a half grilled sandwich with chips. The chips are very good, but the sandwich came out cold which wasn't really expected when I ordered it hot. (But it still tasted fine) I've heard the fish is amazing, so I will definitely be back to try that menu option out! read more

Love Sonka's! I decided to visit today for lunch, after checking out the new Vigo County History Museum. We had been planning to go to Clabber Girl for lunch, but after we overheard some particularly loud museum visitors were heading there, we changed our plans and we were glad we did. Very welcoming bar, with a lot of seating (both inside and outside). We were greeted right away by the staff. They brought over the extensive beer list and the menu. A lot of delicious choices on both lists. My partner and I ended up ordering a Three Floyds IPA and a Stella Artois cider. Also the half sandwich and salad for her and the fish and shrimp platter for me. Jean loved her salad and sandwich and I really enjoyed the fish platter. The cod was perfectly breaded and so good. We had a really excellent server who knew the beer menu and was able to make suggestions to my partner who wanted something with low ABV. Not an easy task given that they have a very large beer list. We really liked the vibe of the place. Good music, not super loud, a couple of tvs with basketball games playing. Nice crowd of people of all ages (over 21). We were seated on the bar side, I am assuming they allow all ages on the restaurant side. The building was built in 1900 and the bar dates back to 1933. OK. I'm a sucker for an Irish Pub. Sonka Has the proper vibe as soon as you walk in. The beer selection is fantastic and they rotate in and out different selections. Everything about this joint is great.........except the food. I have a rule. I'll never run my mouth about a joint unless I've given the place a few shots (everyone has a bad day). As any Irish Pub or UK styled joint, my first go-to or litmus is always going to be Fish and Chips. They are serving you breaded fish and literal potato chips. Now hold on, the chips are fresh made in house and tasty. Second time in, I ordered the big fish sandwich boasting half a pound of cod. Without having an actual piece of fish weighing 1/2 a pound, I wound up with a bun stuffed with individually fried pieces of BREADED fish, adding up to a 1/2 pound. Two or three bites in, the whole thing turned into a soggy bread bomb. Listen, I hate grinding on joints like this. The service was great, capturing the true "Pub" feel is on point. Do yourselves a solid. Develop a solid UK style beer batter and fry your fish properly in the tradition of true UK/irish/Welsh fish n chips ( I lived in Wales getting my FnCs of a lorry wrapped in newspaper). The Claddagh (Covid caused them to close) in Plainfield and Indy used Bass Ale for their batter as an example. They also threw massive chunks of fish on the plate. Been going to Sonka for years. They have great food and a wide variety of drinks (tap, bottle, and cocktails). My personal favorite food is the "Blarney Stones," aka fried pickles. They are always delicious! They used to have one of my favorite ciders, Stella Cidre, on tap as well, but they must've got rid of it, as last time I went they no longer had it :( However, they have some other ciders and various fruit beers in rotation, plus seasonal cocktails, so I can always still find something I like. They have specials/events regularly that seem super fun. On Tuesday's they do "Tini's and Weenies" which is a special on martini's and hot dogs. They usually do something fun for St. Patty's day, and they also have weekly trivia on Thursdays. My only critique is that if you go at peak hours, service will be slow. Every time I have stopped by, it has been a seat yourself situation, and is usually about 15-20 minutes before a server comes to your table, which is why I've never attended one of the special events. read more

We visited for lunch on my Birthday; we shared the fries with the dips our friendly server suggested as our appetizer. Both dips we sampled were delicious and unique. The draft beers menu was both extensive and very affordable (I wouldn't dare say cheap because the craft beers were from excellent breweries). We both ordered their fish sandwich and found it to be delicious and surprisingly not at all greasy or heavy. The bar had a great environment and we were surprised there weren't more people visiting for lunch as the food and drinks were great and well priced. We hope to come back soon! read more

Sonkas is the best place in Terre Haute to get a beer on draft. Beer. They have 20+ taps with a wide variety of local beers at all times. And, considering it is an Irish bar, they pour a nice Guinness as well. The taps change often so it is worth your while to stop in often to see what is on tap. Additionally, they also keep a nice variety of sours and ciders on tap as well. Liquor. They recently started selling liquor as well. I don't believe they sell any mixed drinks and they definitely don't sale shots, which helps to preserve the atmosphere they are going for and that I enjoy. They carry a small selection of bourbons. Wine. They sell it but I don't drink it so that's about all I can say about that! Food. The food is okay. I give a 5 for the beer but I would say the food is closer to a 3. read more

I read the good reviews and I was still impressed with the experience my wife and I had at Sonka. We stopped in for lunch during the week and were able to grab a parking spot right along the side of the building. The entrance is on the Wabash side, and leads directly into the bar area. Note that a separate dining area is located behind the backwall of the bar and there is also outdoor seating on both the east and south sides too! We grabbed a table in the bar area and although we tried to read the beer options on the electronic board over the bar, the 32 drafts flipped too quickly for me to read them, so the server quickly brought over a paper version for us. I ended up grabbing a German Hefeweizen that was quite tasty! For lunch, my wife played it safe and went with a traditional breaded tenderloin with the works and the housemade chips. As expected, it was pretty good and greatly exceeded the bun size. The chips were crisp and though a bit under seasoned, went well with the dip that was provided. I decided to try something unusual and went with the "Traditional Irishdillas". I liked the play of words since I can't imagine much less traditional than combining quesadillas with corned beef, but they made it work! The also had thin potato cakes and pepper jack cheese inside the tortillas and topped them with additional cheese and a house sauce. The horseradish mustard on the side was a great flavor enhancer as well! Oh, and I got the cole slaw side which is worth mentioning. It is very sweet and though the server mentioned it was creamy, I didn't find it creamy but more crisp. Whatever the description, it was delicious too! The staff was very friendly and my wife and I both agreed we would like coming back when we are in the area. p.s. On the receipt, there is a comment about being the "Home of the Naked Weenie". I had to ask and they have hot dog nights on Tuesdays called "Naked Weenies around the World" that are naked for $.99, but can get "baggage" for another $.88 which are basically the toppings you want to dress your hot dog with. We jumped off of 70 to have a nice lunch that didn't involve a drive thru window. Loved this place. Friendly staff. Really enjoyed the Horseradish Melt. It had just a bit of horseradish flavor and the pumpernickel bread was a bit mild. A really good mix of favors. The misses had a burger with the barbecue ranch added... Awesome sauce. Overall, this place is pretty great. It is an ample bar with lots of top of the shelf liquor selections, plenty of beers on draft from near and far, and a knowledgeable staff. Every once in a while, you get a grumpy waiter, but more often than not, it is great service with a smile. There are peanuts in the shell available at the front door. The menu is chock full of delish dishes. I highly recommend the pitcher of fries with dipping sauces- especially the curry mayo. The veggie burger is tasty and can be substituted on any of the other burger styles, which is a super plus. I'm a Jameson and ginger or cider beer person, and they have a pretty terrific ginger beer and Rhinegeist Bubbles, so really, this place is like a pit stop pretty close to heaven.
