Sorry if I am just a student but the overall food choices and quality is not good. The service is sometimes okay but some of the waitstaff is very disorganized and I was charge more than once for food I did not receive on multiple occasions. The options of menu items is not good either needs more options either than fried items and fettuccine alfredo pasta that doesn't have any flavour and is watery. I also usually get sick like throwing up after eating the food here. Same with Hoover Hall Food as well. The overall ambiance is terrible can't hear a thing in that place. My wife ordered a grilled chicken sandwich, it came out without any chicken. So she took the price of the chicken off the bill. The waitress was rude and confrontational . Very poor management and at least our waitress. Nobody should have to try and find your waitress to get some service. So this is a place. I got a beer pitcher and was pleasantly surprised by the happy go lucky waitress. She gave us our red white and blue beer and left in a hurry. We were surprised by the lack of customers considering most places seemed to close at or around 3pm on Sunday in Greencastle. Indiana Tenderloin was really good. The pretzel breadsticks and queso were awesome. They have a TouchTune Jukebox which is always fun. Absolutely would be a place we'd go back to when visiting our Nephew. read more

One of two restaurants located inside The Inn at DePauw, The Fluttering Duck has actually existed in the DePauw University area since 1970, though it has in recent years undergone some design changes to give it more of a college town feeling with a diversified menu that still gives it a "bar food" feeling but with a slightly upscale twist. As I have zero sense of direction, I couldn't begin to tell you what end of The Inn that The Fluttering Duck is located on, though it's signage is obvious and everyone around seems to know it. You can enter it from the street, though it's also accessible from a hallway connected to the hotel. The Fluttering Duck is open for dinner during the week, 4pm - 10pm, but does open for lunch on weekends. They do offer online ordering. The Fluttering Duck features a large microbrew selection, 5 flat screen televisions, live music and karaoke nights. As it's located within a hotel, accessibility is pretty strong and there are multiple tables in the fairly open concept restaurant. As is usual, the bar itself is not particularly wheelchair friendly. The menu consists largely of bar-type foods including burgers, sandwiches, pizza and other options. Somewhat rare for a bar establishment, The Fluttering Duck does offer vegan/vegetarian options. I was dining with friends and we all asked the server, whose name I didn't get, for recommended options. She praised the tenderloin, veggie burger, and other dishes while not speaking quite as highly of the pizza. As I have a friend who blogs about tenderloin, I ordered that sandwich hoping it would be a new gem for him to try out. The Fluttering Duck was fairly busy upon our arrival and got busier the longer we stayed. My companions, while from Putnam County, had not previously dined at The Fluttering Duck. As I'd just done a lot of wheeling, I wasn't really in the mood to pack up and go somewhere else and I was pretty sweaty and grimy from the day's adventures. The food? Quite honestly, the breaded tenderloin sandwich was underwhelming. While it may have been hand-breaded, my sense was that it tasted more like a frozen fritter and not a particularly appealing one. The sandwich was overly crisp in spots and the bun didn't complement the flavor well. In a rarity for me, I actually didn't finish it. The french fries were definitely a better option with a unique seasoning and lightly browned flavor that was enjoyable. The service was also incredibly off. One of my companions never got offered a coffee refill and I never got offered an iced tea refill. The server was perfectly friendly, in fact she obliged our request to take a photo of us before we left, but the actual service just seemed to be a bit off and devoid of anything that would make me want to return. Overall, we all agreed that the experience was less than satisfying with one of my companions, a fellow Yelper, looking at me and saying "Do you think it's "Meh?" Indeed, it was "Meh." For the hotel premium pricing, I'd expect a higher quality meal. While it wasn't abysmal, it was disappointing and it's definitely not someplace I'd have returned a second time if staying in the area longer. While there are enough positive reviews here that I may give the place a second chance, it's not a return visit I'll rush to make. Meh. That sums it up. read more

I eat where when I'm in Greencastle because my boyfriend goes to DePauw and has a massive gift card here. I like the drinks and when covid isn't happening it's a great social scene for all the DePauw students. I've basically tried everything on this menu so I'll share with you some gems: the burger, the southwest chicken wrap, the spinach artichoke dip. Absolutely do not get the fried pickles and peppers! They're weird because they're sweet and not dill. It's just not my taste but others may like them. I also feel like they overcook them a little bit. The breaded tenderloin isn't the best but it's still good. This restaurant is very hit or miss but I like it and I will always give it my money. read more

Lovely fall Saturday lunch on the patio in Greencastle. Enjoyed a burger and pork street tacos. Nicely spaced for social distancing and plenty of large outdoor heat lamp towers for when it gets chilly! Large spacious very clean bathrooms. Experienced staff knows what they are doing here. read more

Hate to say it, but even for pub food, it leaves a lot to be desired. Fish & chips were so disgusting (you could see the tail fin through the grease-soaked coating; once you got to the fish, it was one step above gross (TBH, they did take it off the check. My non-foodie/will eat anything put in front of him & wax poetic, grunted and said his steak was "Okay". Salmon was overcooked to the point of being almost inedible, although the bourbon glaze on top was quite tasty. Salads are laughable - my house salad had a 1/2" thick inedible slice of lettuce from the root-end of the head. Stick with the burgers, the pulled pork sandwich, and the French onion soups - all are not great - but adequate. French fries are quite good, though! read more

They changed their fish from a natural battered thick piece of cod to a prepackaged fish from a frozen box. Cost is $16 . My stepfather and stepbrother would not eat the fish. Needed to find a restaurant for dinner after the eclipse. There were not many choices but we happened on this place that was open. Went in and heard there was only 1 waitress so service was slow. We were not in a hurry and had no real alternatives. Ended up at the bar. I have to say that I was not expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. Jackie, who was our waitress, was flying around. She needed roller skates. But she was funny and efficient. We actually had our order taken by someone else whose name I did not get but she was helping. Both of them were so nice and watching out for us. The food was fine. Big enough menu. I had a shrimp salad. It had rice and beans on lettuce. The sauce was odd but the rest was quite good. My cousin had a burger which she said was very good. There was a patio but it was a little too cool for us to sit there. Would go there again. Fluttering Duck has become our favorite local place. First, we ask for Ian, even if there's a wait. Hands down best waiter we've ever had. Fried pickles and peppers will be sold out about 1/4 of the time, but worth taking the chance because they are amazing. Food overall is very good! As far as food in Greencastle goes, this place is one of the best. I love that its on campus as that helps me ensure I've got vegan/vegetarian options. They've got great space to watch games and get drunk. For how hidden this nugget is, it is definitely worth the stop for an out-of-towner. I mean, what else does Green castle have to offer? 99% of the time this place is flawless. Great service and I'm always amazed about how cheap the bill is. I did have a bad server experience last time. Dragged my rating down a star. Had to get my own menus, get refills at the bar, and literally chase my waitress to order and pay. My experience here was awful. The soup, salad, and entree were all served together, insuring the entree was cold by the time I got to it. The tomato basil soup was like a smashed tomato that had been scraped into a bowl and served at room temperature with a dirty spoon (yes, they replaced the spoon). Only $4! The house salad was a half-inch thick slice out of a baseball-sized head of lettuce "smothered" (sarcasm) in a teaspoon each of soggy bacon and diced tomato (omit the carrot listed on the menu) with a tablespoon of nearly tasteless dressing. $5! OR, get both of these gems for $9 and save $0.00. What a deal! After the soup and salad experience, I just threw the by-now cold tenderloin (served without the sides of mayo and mustard listed on the menu, per Fluttering Duck SOP, apparently) away. I was DONE. I just arrived for an interview, and was happy to be able to have dinner by myself... ah, Midwest food. I asked the waiter for beer selections, and he suggested the New Belgium seasonal, which I got. Not something that special for me, but one I know I like. *Later* I saw that their beer menu was incredible and had my favorite! I wish I would have asked for the full menu at the time. I had a Reuben sandwich, which was good. It seemed to be the healthiest option on the menu - cabbage on it, after all. The atmosphere of this place is a bit strange, in a good way. There is a wall of TV's playing all sorts of sports. And there is a hunting video game. But there was also a table of young women next to me having a bible study. Clearly this is a well-loved and well-used establishment. It was a great introduction to the area! read more

Another reviewer described the food as "meh", and I have to agree. French onion soup was $2 more than their other soups, came in a considerably smaller bowl, and was mostly bread. The actual soup part measured 1/3 the way up the soup spoon. Also it was clearly microwaved to melt the cheese, rather than broiled as proper French onion is. The soup had an odd flavor that I can't even describe. The chicken panini with mozzarella and roasted red pepper had zero flavor. I ended up trying each component separately and the only thing that did have any taste was the mozzarella. The wine list was underwhelming. This seems odd to say, but the service was too attentive. We could not carry on a conversation bc the waiter was at the table about every 2-3 minutes. The constant interruptions were irritating. With so many other excellent choices in Green Castle, I don't see us returning any time soon. read more

I gone to the Fluttering Duck multiple times, although this evening my be my last. I got there at about 4:45 p.m.. Sign there says wait to be seated, which we did. The phone began to ring as we waited and waited and waited to be seated, I glanced at my watch, we waited for 7 minutes with the phone ringing the whole time. I went looking around for an employee, no luck, There were several people drinking, so I knew they were open. Someone finally showed up and we were seated. I don't eat meat on Friday's so I ordered the SW chicken pizza subsisting shrimp instead of the chicken which I have done before. Server said OK, $6. upcharge, no problem. Then she came back and told me they could not do that, OK, just the chicken on the side. Our food came and there was chicken on the side, but chicken on the pizza too. So frustrating! I had to pick the chicken off the hot pizza with my fingers, then they only took $5. off the $15. price. The pizza was also slightly over done and there was no kick to it at all as I had it twice before. Never refilled our drinks, never brought extra napkins, had to ask for salt and pepper. Made a lot of improvements since I graduated! Used to be so so food, but the Thursday jazz and drinks brought us all in. Came recently with a date and there was a live band on the patio. Service was slowish but it was so nice out and the beers were great and eclectic and so many new items on the menu! Great second chance! read more

We met with a friend here for a dinner, thinking it might offer delicious and high quality food since it is a part of the DePauw Inn. This place is a college sports bar that is overpriced for what it offers. Our food tasted frozen, especially my friend's tenderloin sandwich, which the waitress said was a "signature item". None of our food had much flavor. The waitress took our order, dropped our food, and we never saw her again until it was time to grab the check. An overall disappointing experience, and we will not return. If you're grabbing a beer after class, maybe this is your spot. Other than that, stay away from the menu. read more

During my sophomore year at DePauw University (aka my only good year of college) the Duck got a makeover. It went from being kinda blah, to having a bit of class and being a pretty legit hangout. The Ducks now seems to have gone back in the other direction. It had a much more fratty feel to it than the Duck of c. 2003 (really, a bar appealing to frat boys at a college infested with them? DO GO ON!) and that just wasn't the scene I was hoping for on a dreary January day when all I was doing was killing time until the real attraction in Greencastle opened up for dinner (more on that later). Also, I got ignored at the bar for several minutes before someone actually acknowledged my existence. (In fairness, the guy who did serve me wasn't standing there when I walked up and helped me as soon as get got behind the bar). The service I did get was friendly and efficient. Their on tap beer selection is most of the junk you'd expect for the Greeks (frat boys/sorority girls, not people from actual Greece) who just want to get drunk cheaply, but there was surprisingly one diamond in that rough, a delicious Sun King Cream Ale that I wish was available in Chicago, so kudos to the duck to try to bring some actual taste to the beer selections. Also, the prices were pretty cheap. 4 bucks for a pint of craft brew? I'll take it. So all in all, it was a bit disappointing to return to the Fluttering Duck as an actual adult, but there were a few bright points to remind me why it was such a destination back in the day. read more
