Biscuits & Sausage Gravy with home fries with onion
    Jay P.

This is the best place in Indiana for breakfast especially biscuits and sausage gravy. I have been holed up in my home for a year come March 1, 2021, because of this lousy CoVid-19. I'm scheduled to get both Vaccines shots in the month of February. Guess where I'm heading the first time out of my cave in March? If you guessed Bert & Betty's Kitchen you know me and what I have missed most in fine culinary fares. I will have Jackie's wonderful 5 biscuits & Gravy and I may even stick around for lunch! Jackie by the way, is Bert and Betty's daughter. She runs the business. I know one thingI won't need dinner that day!!!LOL! PS. Jackie catered my sons wedding 23 years ago!

The true small town diner! Seriously. It's in a very small town of midwestern Indiana. See menu in photos. But, they usually have daily specials and post those on their Facebook page. Check it out! Cash or check only. Their bread is soooo good! Make sure you get some! I've never had a bad thing here!

Small neighborhood spot. We went for breakfast on a Friday morning. (They stop serving breakfast at 11am for now.) I had a ham and cheese skillet with 2 eggs over hash browns. Delish! It came with a side of homemade sourdough toast. Yummy! We also got a side of grits with cheese (pretty good) and a small order of biscuits with sausage gravy (kinda bland.) My son had choc chip pancakes and he liked them too. They have a lot of pie for dessert. We took home peanut butter pie (gooey mousse) and peach pie. I'm still full hours later. Denise, the waitress, is sweet and hard working. Glad we visited Bert & Betty's today. :)

It wasn't clear what their hours were: the website said they were open until 4pm, while the hours posted Google and on the door said 2pm, and here on Yelp it says 3pm. They also had a paper sign taped to the door saying they would close that day at 1pm. Fortunately we made it there a half hour before closing, but it would probably be a good idea for them to sort that out across the various platforms. I ordered a latte with praline syrup which was nice (the cups and lids were kind of the best I've seen at a coffee shop, which is random, but worth mentioning) as well as a bagel and a donut. The donut was a chocolate long john and I asked the person taking my order if they were filled or unfilled. They said unfilled, which is what I wanted, but when I got back to my car, it was filled. My husband went in to place his own order, so he purchased another normal chocolate frosted donut and it was fine, but I would have been bummed if I had been on my own and gotten the wrong thing. My bagel was good and my husband enjoyed the coffee and pastry he ordered, plus my reject donut. ;) Looks like it'd be a nice place to stay and enjoy a meal or do some work, as there was a whole separate sitting area upstairs.

Anyway, walked into the cutest shop with wonderful employees ready to serve. Ordered a wonderful tasting espresso to go and a couple of donuts for the road back home. Tried the sprinkle birthday cake donut and a regular yeast donut. There were many options for bread choices and saw a large open space upstairs as well as a good amount of seating downstairs. Appears you can watch the bakery working while sitting as well, which is a nice add to any cafe/coffeeshop. PROS: Space is large and inviting Friendly staff Easy parking across the street or on the street Cake donut was great, needs a few more sprinkles but great Coffee taste was great, had a double espresso so definitely tasted the coffee Breakfast sandwiches were on the menu, did not try, but great option CONS: Yeast donut- depends on what you like. It is a thicker yeast donut not the light and fluffy I can eat 10 at a sitting type of yeast, but the taste was good HIGHLY RECOMMEND STOPPING INTO THIS ONE STOP SHOP!

Right across the Indiana state line on the West side of Indiana sits this little gem that serves up awesome hamburgers made with local sourced beef and many other items such as fish, steak, and chicken. We ordered two appetizers of onions rings, fried green beans and when they arrived we realized at that moment we were never going to finish either of them. The portions were huge and the freshness and flavor were great! They have many specialty hamburgers to choose from and the standards as well. I went with the Ellie burger with grilled onions and bacon jam. It was massive and delicious. My partner chose the mushroom and Swiss for a home run. The burgers come with your choice of fries, chips or Cole slaw. We both chose fries and they were really really good. We could have did just fine with the fries as our side but we splurged. The interior of the place is a little dark but warm and comfortable. There are even a few slot machines to entertain you if you desire. We also noted that there is a time change once you cross the state line so keep that in mind.

We planned to make an afternoon of it since it's an hour drive to Greencastle from Indy and stopped in at Lost Hollow for some beers before stopping in at a local antique shop and then heading home. It was the perfect way to spend a rainy Saturday afternoon. I'm not sure if they have a parking lot or not because we parked on the street. We were seated right away and our server was very sweet. It was very empty inside, just one other person sitting at the bar. Later on, a few more tables filled up with people coming in for lunch. My first beer was the Duke Lager and my husband got the Little Jeff Hefeweizen. We both really enjoyed them! Crisp and cold and refreshing. Their food menu looked really good too, but we had just eaten before coming in, so I would love to come back with friends for lunch or dinner and some beers. I ended up ordering a 2nd beer, the canned pumpkin imperial ale, and it was very rich and delicious. My husband thought it was a little too sweet, but I love pumpkin ales and loved it. The inside is spacious with lots of plants in the windows and a big stage, so I'm sure they get busy when there is live music. The bathrooms were big and very clean. They have a bid deck out front with comfortable looking patio furniture. We honestly would have sat outside even though it was a little bit chilly if it hadn't been raining. Highly recommend driving to Greencastle and supporting some of their local businesses before or after enjoying some delicious beers.

The outside covered porch was perfect on a hot day with a good breeze. I had the Cubanish Sandwich with some really good pulled pork barbecue and the chips were homemade and old fashioned!
