This review is a "go along to get along" rating. To say it was a unique experience is an understatement. Please be patient as you read. Know that I am a city boy and this is in rural Indiana. Two thousand people live in Cloverdale. We stopped on our way to a sprint car race not far from here. There are just not many dining options. While I do not think usual clientele or others would be put off, there were some signs outside that warned you of their conservative political beliefs, warning you to not enter if this offends you. I did not. I went in and did not feel uncomfortable my the hospitality. Ambiance is basic. There is nothing fancy, but then again, it was just fine. I may seem prejudiced, but this comment is sincere and meant to be purely complimentary. My friend, from rural Indiana agreed. "This place brought to mind that it is where you go after the hay is stacked, the cows are in the barn, you are hungry and can get your fill of good food, cheap." The daily specials posted suggested I come back. Service bringing our order was slow, but our server apologized and explained a kitchen issue. No worries. We both ordered the quintessential Indiana sandwich - Pork Tenderloin. I got the grilled and he got the fried. Never in my life have I seen a meal called a "sandwich" that looked like this. The tenderloin was as big as a dinner plate. The bun looked a decoration more than the basis for a sandwich. The meat was easily twice or three times the diameter of the ornamental bun. Neither of us could even eat half. Deferring to my Hoosier native, he declared this one of the best tenderloins he ever had. Unfortunately, my grilled version was a bit dry. We have made tenderloins at home in TN. I cannot for the life of me figure out how they pounded that cut of meat into the shape they served. read more

I was in Cloverdale Indiana for an event at the racetrack. I saw decent reviews so we decided to try it. I think the reviews were from locals. I didn't take pictures but I got the meatloaf and it looked exactly like the picture on their menu. There was no gravy on it and I was asked if I wanted ketchup. I am not a ketchup on meatloaf kind of guy so I used the gravy from my mashed potato's. It was still dried most likely due to it being heated up on a grill because it had a crust on both sides. My wife had breakfast and the bacon has been sitting all day and probably reheated. The food was cheap like 25ish for the both of us but if I am ever there again, it will not be my first choice. Despite the hostile, othering sign out front (which made me wary and alert) we decided to go in since it had good ratings and a lot of them. I enjoyed the Sunday special, fried chicken with mashed potatoes and apple sauce, and my spouse enjoyed their burger. All the food we had was good. The service was pleasant and good. The decor was cute. I liked the wooden trains on the walls. I wondered the whole time about the purpose of the sign. I figured to welcome those like them and warn others to stay away. I say Merry Christmas, love America, support the troops and police...but being brown and urban, the sign kept me on my toes. If I could give six stars, I would! WOW doesn't even get it half way there. Found this place by accident and decided to give it a try for lunch. The staff, "Tiffany" and, well every staff member there.... Just knocked it out the park. A home feeling place where you feel very welcome and wanted. All food made from scratch! Nothing skimpy about it. Oh, and the chicken fry was one of the best I've ever had. Hand battered, and from a pork tenderloin! Homeade Mac-and-cheese, and the rolls.... Oh my... the rolls. Yum! Selected it from a quick Yelp search while out on 70 W (which really should be renamed Mid-America Raceway...feels weird being passed easily when you are doing 5 over the 70 MPH limit). We really enjoyed the local family big kitchen atmosphere. It is the kind of place where a niece gets recruited from church to be the hostess for the lunch rush. We found out she is USAF ROTC and plans to be a JAG...sharing that as that's how quickly we , total strangers, became part of Lou's family. The food was solid, and simple like something you would get at an aunt's house. My wife got a club that was pretty decent. I got a patty melt. The fries were good, although a slightly smaller portion than I expected given the vibe...but actually the right amount. I guess I will eventually learn to trust that others know stuff. We would definitely stop in again if in the area. It is right off Interstate exit...a few turns and bang you are in the dirt parking lot. After leaving Cataract Falls on a Monday evening we were looking for a place to call in an order for pick up & take back to our AirB&B. That's when we found Lou's Diner. We looked at the menus on Yelp. I called to place an order. The lady on the phone said it would be about 20 minutes (which was perfect because it was going to take us 15 minutes to get there). The parking lot was packed but luckily there were a few spots open. I parked & walked in. There was a specific area for pick up orders. I went to the window. I could see several large groups of people at tables eating. They all looked like they were having a good time. A lady came over & asked for my name. Our food came out as she was giving me the total. Both ladies were super nice. Mom & I both ordered cheeseburgers. I ordered fries with mine & mom ordered onion rings. Our burgers were very tasty. The fries were good - nothing crazy. But those onion rings? Incredible. They were perfectly crispy & delicious. We talked about driving back just to get another order. Hubby got the tenderloin, and it was EXCELLENT, and HUGE! The fries were very thick and just so-so. Onion rings and fried mushrooms were VERY good! Some of the booth seat are old and worn and duct-taped - but other than that, the place looks nice inside - very clean, and decorated super-cute. Our waitress was cheerful and attentive, quick to notice drinks getting low and to refill them. Top-notch service. For a small town "hole-in-the wall," it was really a pleasant meal. Small hometown diner. We were near by doing a family event and stopped in for a bite to eat before traveling back home. Great atmosphere. The menu is kept small and simple which is nice to not be overwhelmed with a ton of options. I ordered the breaded tenderloin with onion rings and it was delicious. You wouldn't know it was here. Thank you Yelp! It's clearly where the Coverdale, population 2100, locals eat. We were greeted warmly as soon as we walked in the door. It's cozy diner, nothing fancy. The booth seat has tears patched together with duct tape but they were comfy! I didn't sink into them or have anything poking me where it shouldn't. The waitress was pleasant and happy to help me decide what to eat. Everything on the menu is home style. Meatloaf, pork tenderloin, club sandwich. Nothing fancy. My pork tenderloin came out on a 16" plate! I ate over half and my to go box was still a full dinner portion!! Insane. My husband ordered the meatloaf and it didn't need any ketchup or gravy. So, we went to a horse show last weekend, and Lou's was right there on the same road. I had already checked out Yelp, and had my mind set on the tenderloin sandwich. It was truly spectacular...fresh pork tenderloin, flattened to big as the plate size, crispy fried goodness, with a pretty great bun too (although the tenderloin was 3x bigger than the bun ). Even though I truly think it would be enough to feed 3 people, I made it through half and packed up the rest so I would have room for homemade pie!! I ended up with homemade cake instead, which was just like my mom would make, and she was an excellent baker. Tasted my friend's coconut cream pie, which was also luscious, and a taste of her real fried chicken (none of that fast food stuff at Lou's).
