I have given Stable one star because of their poor customer service and because their menu does not fully/accurately describe the food they serve. This is the first place I've visited in quite a while where allergy-prone items are not clearly marked on the menu. If you have a food allergy and choose to dine here, be careful! More specifically, if you are allergic to nuts, don't get the Cheese Flowers, despite the menu making it sound like nuts aren't present in the dish. I did not ask beforehand if the food I ordered contained nuts because - read their description! "Tête de Moine Cheese, Pear-Bread, Pickles" - does that sound like a dish that's fully loaded with nuts?!? After starting to feel off after eating a "Cheese Flower," I asked my waiter if he served nuts to an individual with a (luckily not too severe) nut allergy. I watched him confer with the restaurant manager and then return to say, "Um, yeah, I think there are nuts in that." No one apologized, asked if I was ok, offered to replace the appetizer with something I actually can eat without becoming terribly ill, etc. I cannot recommend this restaurant. read more

Very authentic and delicious swiss food. We had an appetizer of pear bread with tet de moine cheese that was a tasty and just right. For main dishes, we had the venison and pork belly, both lovely presented and cooked to perfection. The fendant wine is original swiss and a great pairing. Excellent!! I ordered from Stable for the first time (Christmas Day carry out!) after hearing great things. I ordered the Landjaeger, Potato Rœsti and Mimosas (latter two shared with another person) and was shocked by the high quality of everything - from the mustard to the Simonet blanc de blanc. (Trust me - I've had rœsti in Alsace, France, and this was better.) The mimosas were finished quickly but the landjaeger and half rœsti were enough for two meals. You can find "cheaper" elsewhere but this food is an excellent value for the quality you get. The Landjaeger in particular is an excellent value - $10 for a full-sized sausage, pickles, and the best mustard and bread you've ever eaten. (Tip: order extra bread). I highly recommend this restaurant for everything from a special occasion to a night you don't feel like cooking. Will be returning for carry out and will visit when they reopen indoor dining in 2021. ! read more

Delightful addition to H St NE. Well cultivated wine list that has local selections and surprising tastes from afar. Probably the best service on H St: owners are present and thoughtful. It feels like coming home when you arrive! The brunch menu is outstanding. We had cheese toast and berner rosti. Cheese toast won for me! One of the owners gave us an extra little treat. Not sure what it is called but it was outstanding! The charcuterie is on point. Don't miss this because the menu looks different to you! It has really wowed us on multiple occasions. My girlfriend and I had an exquisite experience at Stable for her birthday on Saturday night. We made reservations ahead of time and when we arrived we were seated immediately at a small but very cozy table. Our waiter couldn't have been better, and was incredibly good at explaining the menu and checking in with us to see if we needed anything. The food was delicious! I had the Branzino which was cooked perfectly (I was also debating getting the duck) and my girlfriend had the veal. We both had salads as appetizers, and enjoyed the fresh bread. This is my favorite restaurant in D.C. The food and cocktails are great. But the reason I love it is because of the environment and service. Each meal is tremendously enjoyable because I (and my family) are so comfortable here. Which is a direct result of the staff, they are kind and caring - and it shows. The first time I ate here I sat at the bar and the chef explained, as he worked, their process to prepare salmon in salt for Sunday brunch (the next day). My husband and I walked H Street to try something new. We wanted to step out of our comfort zone and boy did we hit the bullseye with Stable. From the street the restaurant looks intimate and rustic. From the time we entered we were blown away. The atmosphere has a great vibe and the service was top notch! My husband ordered the Roast Beef Teller and I ordered the Famous Stable wings, we after all wanted to not completely abandon our comfort zones! The Roast Beef dish was the most delicious, the beef melted in our mouths. The wings were served piping hot with a side of Café de Paris Sauce, which tasted like heaven! We will definitely be back to try the more adventurous (for us) items on the menu! If you're in town, we highly recommend this gem which is easily accessible from the H Street Trolly 13th Street stop. We will definitely be back! The food is very good and the attention to detail is great. I didn't expect much less from a couple of Swiss people. While the food isn't entirely Swiss, that is mostly because Switzerland doesn't have that many stand out dishes. But the stand out dishes Switzerland does have, Stable replicates beautifully. The raclette is great, albeit a bit pricey. The fondue was absolutely delicious. Proper Swiss fondue made with the best Swiss gruyere and emmenthaler. The Rösti is also marvelous. I also like that the owners are always there and visible, making sure their guests are having a good time. Been here half a dozen times so far and will keep coming back. My fiancee and I live in the neighborhood and discovered Stable sometime last year. We've probably been 7 or 8 times since, as it might be our favorite restaurant in DC. It's particularly perfect on a cold winter evening, sitting at the Chef's counter where you can bask in the heat coming from the kitchen. The same chef is there every time and always personally delivers our food to the counter. The staff are warm and friendly while demonstrating Central European efficiency. The menu changes every so often while maintaining staples like their Zurich style veal (my typical go to dish). My fiancée had the venison loin last night which was perfectly balanced with sour red cabbage and sweet caramelized chestnuts. They also serve some of the best bread I've ever had with a perfectly crunchy crust. We went once for brunch and while fine, I'd definitely make dinner the time to go as it just fits better with the heavy food. On that note, if you don't like fat and dairy, this probably isn't the place for you. For those of us who do though, this neighborhood gem can't be beat! read more

We decided to try the Stable out after reading about it in a recent post in the Washingtonian as being a new place to try out for brunch. We were promptly greeted and seated as soon as we arrived. The interior is cozy and rustic feeling and we sat at a table that gave us great views of the chefs in the kitchen. We had the bread basket and Berliners to start with because we couldn't decide between the two. My boyfriend had the rusti with Gruyere cheese and scrambled eggs on top while I opted for the scrambled eggs, sausage and rusti. The food came piping hot and the eggs were melt in your mouth delicious! The general manager stopped by our table to make sure everything was to our liking, as did the wait staff throughout our meal. We will definitely be stopping in again for brunch and are looking forward to trying dinner out soon! read more

This isn't a quick dinner, but we relaxed and had a great time - we weren't rushed at all, but a Tuesday in July is a good time to visit DC restaurants in general. We are preparing for a trip to Europe and one stop is Zurich. We were excited to get a taste of Swiss food before we go. Stable is a tiny gem on H Street. One of our favorite parts was the kitchen bar where you can see the chefs at work, while you eat. We ordered the gougeres which were nice and peppery, and the cheese plate. The Wurzel bread is a little sweet and complemented the cheese perfectly. For our mains, we had the Berner rosti and the Veal. Both were excellent and very hearty. Try the Riesling--you will not regret it. read more

We have now come back to this place multiple times and every time we are just blown away! The food is excellent, the service is always prompt, and the atmosphere is so unique. What really makes it special though is the owner (or manager?) that is always there to greet us with a big smile and enthusiasm. I had a pretty good meal here the other day. The items that I thought were excellent include the chicken liver pate and the beef tongue. Both were excellent especially when topped with their homemade crusty bread. My partner had the risotto which I tasted and loved. I had the Branzino (sea bass) which was unfortunately underwhelming. They used a frozen piece of fish (I was sitting at the kitchen counter so I saw). Seasoning was sparse and one of the pieces of fish was not cooked thoroughly- presumably because it was frozen! Overall an OK experience. I would go back one more time to see if they can top my last experience. read more

I was excited to try this place, even as a vegetarian. I ordered a cocktail with vodka and Aperol (can't remember the name of it), which was just okay, and for my meal I got the risotto with peas, mushrooms, and preserved lemon (I went back in May, and some of their menu changes seasonally). I believe the risotto used regular white rice instead of arborio rice, so it didn't have that super creamy quality that you get with actual risotto. It tasted good, but was slightly disappointing. I'd go back here to try the raclette fondue and maybe get wine instead of a cocktail. read more

From the moment we walked in we felt like welcomed brunch guests in this Swiss-American spot on H Street. The cocktails are creative and delicious...don't miss the fresh tasting Schnapsicles! The rustic decor, with wood walls and benches, carries the Swiss theme without being kitschy. But most of all, it's the food that will bring us back...from the hearty and not too sweet Birchermuesli, to shareable baked goods, to the Rösti, and the cheeses and so much more.
