It's new-ish and fun enough for a neighborhood park, but with many outstanding parks in bordering cities, this play structure (and frankly, all the Bedford playgrounds) fails to stand out. Because they've been so spoiled by other parks, my kids claim this one is boring. Objectively speaking, I think it's a fine park for a neighborhood. It's certainly better than Carousel Park down the road! We like the open space and mature trees surrounding the playground. Harris Ryal's proximity to the Bedford Linear Trail is also convenient. We like to take the kids bike riding along the paved trail and this park is a nice little stop along the way. Unfortunately there are some pretty big drawbacks that keep us from visiting Harris Ryals as often as we might otherwise: 1. No bathrooms - with 5 kids that may have to pee or poop at anytime, there's a limit to the amount of time we can spend somewhere with no bathroom. 2. No parking lot - you can park along the street on Cummings, but my kids exit the car from the left side and this dumps them right onto a busy street. Not ideal. 3. No shade over play structure, and no shade over most of the seating areas. 4. Bizarrely low bench seating. They know it's the parents who sit there, right? They were installed at the correct level for a 2 year old. 5. Bark flooring Today (a November Monday around 4pm) there were lots of kids there playing, but every other time I've been, we are the only ones there. Maybe that was just because of COVID. Or maybe most people, like us, just drive to a better park.

The City of Bedford has made a number of somewhat odd decisions lately in regards to their parks,…read moreincluding but not limited to the renaming of the Bedford Boys Ranch to Generations Park (a terrible name), going forward with a 70 million dollar park renovation project in the midst of a pandemic that has surely decreased city revenues, and putting in this tiny music park in front of the Old Bedford School. It looks like "Sparkling Ice" in some way sponsored this project, but in the end I think the money could have probably be better spent. The idea is cute: a park with musical instruments that are fun for kids to play but don't offend the parent's ear. Bicentennial Park in Southlake previously did a great job with this. The instruments at both parks have a nice sound - low chimes and soft drums that are actually quite soothing to listen to. The difference between Bicentennial Park and the Musical Pocket Playground is that Bicentennial Park has a traditional park surrounding the music area with slides, swings, etc. The musical instruments are fun and the kids do love them, but it can only hold their attention for so long. There needs to be something else available for play if the park is going to be a repeat destination for young families. What the Musical Pocket Playground does have in close proximity is the library, but with no walkway connecting the library to the music playground, people may not think to stop by when they are picking up their books. If you live in the area, it's worth stopping by to take a look, but I wouldn't plan on spending more than 15 minutes and I certainly wouldn't drive from another city.

One of a kind park for its focus on accessibility with extra-wide, smooth paths throughout…read more--including the playground which is two-tiered and offers activities for a range of ages, base/softball diamond, pavilions with picnic tables, and a wonderful winding trail which flows between two small ponds with plentiful picnic tables under shade trees. A great place for an outdoor lunch break, some exercise, playtime, or family time. I am so thankful that Irving has such a beautiful park with such an intentionally inclusive design. I hope that some future maintenance or re-design might be in the works for the restrooms which do not have functioning facets at this time and feature only one metal, latrine-style toilet which isn't very user-friendly. Apart from that, this park features great design, landscaping and offerings that make you feel you've retreated from the city a bit. I've never visited in the evenings--only afternoons but it's been pretty peaceful in those times.
