Two-piece fried chicken meal - breast and thigh (my choice). Mashed potatoes and gravy, and cottage cheese.
    Scott N.

From the outside one would never know that inside, once you find the door, is a restaurant/bar in a multi-room layout with comfortable tables available to accommodate different sized groups. The six of us found a table that suited us well. Our waitress, who I believe was running the place by herself, which the exception of someone cooking in the kitchen, was very sweet. Though it was the chicken that brought us here, only four of us ordered fried chicken. While I'm pretty sure everyone enjoyed their meals, I'll focus on mine. I had a two-piece fried chicken meal (breast and thigh) with mashed potatoes and gravy, and cottage cheese. The bill came to just under $12... what a deal! The meals took a while to come out, which to me meant it was going to be fresh. It was not only fresh, it was piping hot. The skin was perfectly crisp with a slight peppery flavor. The chicken was moist and delicious. The mashed potatoes had lumps, which is absolutely outstanding. Everything was so delicious. It's a bit of a drive, but I'd come back again for sure. One negative is the men's bathroom smelled a bit like a gas station bathroom. Yeah, it could have smelled a lot better. It was a bit of a bummer.

Took my boyfriend there since he hadn't been there in awhile. We both got Chicken dinner specials. They have done better than the last time I was there myself. Their mashed potatoes are good! Place is small and employees are friendly. Good place for bikers/rzr/Jeep riders.

Stopped in here to grab a quick bite of lunch. It was pretty crowded. The bartender came over to wait on us first and then she went to break and we got a waitress. I ordered the tavern Burger and onion rings and a cranberry and Malibu cocktail. The place is definitely dive-y. Looks like this place was an old home as there are different rooms that the tables are in. Pretty loud in there with all the people. My onion rings were good nice and crunchy like I like them. The bun was cold like it was straight out of the fridge and the cheese was not melted on my burger. The burger itself was tasty. They could definitely do a better job but they were busy!

Get the chicken! It's delicious, flavorful and moist. It does take some time (30 min) especially if you're getting a whole chicken. Have a beer at the bar while you wait for your chicken. You can parking next to the church when you dine in. There are a good amount of seating area when you dine in. This restaurant is definitely your hometown chicken joint that everyone loves!

Really is some of the best Indiana Fried Chicken! If you blinked, you might miss St. Leon Tavern located in a small town of about 650 people, but it is a hidden gem. Look for the St. Joseph Catholic Church and this hole-in-the-wall tavern/bar is across the street. Parking is limited so park in front of the church, with no worries of taking a parking spot from Sunday mass attendees because the St. Leon Tavern is closed on Sundays! We always order the fried chicken, usually two breasts and no dark meat. Nice option that you can order a whole/half chicken dinner or any single pieces that you want. Hubby prefers two mashed potatoes with gravy for his sides, while I go for the French fries or onion rings with coleslaw for mine. Always smile when the server reminds me that there is a 50 cents up-charge on the onion rings, and then follows up by saying she has had upset customers when they see their bill with the extra 50 cents! St. Leon Tavern, unlike Wagners and a very few others on the Indiana Chicken Trail, deep fries its chicken, rather than pan frying in a cast-iron skillet. Pros and cons to this. Pros include that the chicken pieces are larger than some of the other restaurants on the trail and they can get your chicken to the table in 30 not 40 minutes. Con in that you really need to request extra black pepper, the key ingredient in Indiana Fried Chicken, since the deep frying lessens the intensity of the black pepper. Chicken is always served steaming hot but remains juicy. Most sides, like the vegetable of the day and coleslaw are homemade. Service is welcoming, bathrooms are clean but dated (but hey--it is a bar), and although a tavern/bar, family-friendly so you can bring the kids. To pass the time until your chicken arrives, grab some 50 cent or $1 bingo pull-tabs from the machine and maybe you will win. I've won a crisp $100 bill on the pull-tabs. The building has some history as well. It was built in 1840 and by 1860 its use was as a general store/restaurant. No general store anymore, just the restaurant.

This is what the building looks like. I could find no sign. It's across the street from the church.

Wow, once you can find this place, you'll be treated to the best fried chicken on the planet. Let me start by saying St. Leon is a tiny town. Yelp listed the restaurant close to Rt 1, and there was a building, but no sign. People must just know it's there. It's not fancy, just a homey and clean little bar. The servers are friendly and welcomed us even though we were clearly lost. We could pick any table of the dozen or so available. There are TVs playing basketball and an inviting little bar. Signs advertise daily beer specials. We were told that we must try their famous chicken. I ordered the 2-piece meal with mashed potatoes and slaw. The hand breaded chicken is hot, moist and crispy beyond belief. The breading is thin and spicy. Just thinking about it, I'm ready to jump in the car and make the 2 hour trip back. The mashed potatoes are made from scratch and good as was the slaw. My husband got the tenderloin. The loin is smashed thinner than other tenderloins, but packs big flavor. He recommends getting it with the grilled jalapeños and onions. We also tried the fried pickles and cauliflower with chipotle ranch dressing. Both were excellent, pickles with crispy breading and cauliflower with more of a beer battered breading. Ok, so this meal might have been the healthiest, but it was an indulgent treat. I'll be craving a return trip. It looks like they get busy in the evenings. There is plenty of parking around the building.

I came back. I just love the delicious Tenderloin sandwich that this place serves. Hand breaded and spiced to my liking. The straight cut french fries are hot and tasty. The service is friendly and the place is inviting. What a great find in this scenic, out of the way part of Indiana.

Excellent pub food! 5 stars for the food. The pickle fries are a MUST order! The fried cauliflower is also really good. The fried chicken is always perfect and has a unique batter with fresh ground black pepper. The tavern burger, a 1/2 lb homemade beef patty with everything on it, is also wonderful. Definitely a great place for quality pub food. Other things to know: This is a small family run establishment with no signage or website. It is largely a bar, so you're expected to come in and grab any open table or seat and then flag someone over when you're ready to order. We went on a Saturday evening when it was very crowded. It was impossible to get refills on our sodas, or really any help at all because they were so busy. We also did wait quite a while for our food, but like I said- it was very busy. BUT, when it did come out it was all piping hot and fresh. You can call ahead for takeout if you don't have the time to sit down. Definitely worth the try.

First let me say that looks can be extremely deceiving. Driving up at first, we weren't sure if we were in the right place. Walking in, however, we were greeted by friendly staff and seated immediately. Given it was a nice day, we asked to be seated outside, where we saw a band was setting up to perform. For a starter, we ordered the Chip Trio, which comes with three dipping sauces. The Mexican Street Corn dip was my favorite but the salsa and queso were great too. The queso was a little on the runny side but still quite flavorful. For my entree, I ordered the Garlic Butter Salmon. My husband ordered the Eight Top Sirloin. Our portion sizes were quite generous, and everything was delicious. The Garlic Butter Salmon was seasoned and prepared perfectly. For desserr, we shared a Strawberry Shortcake. Not only was it delicious, with perfectly ripe and fresh strawberries, but it was the perfect size. We were quite full after our entree but wanted a little something sweet that wasn't huge. The Strawberry Shortcake hit the spot! The live music made the experience extra special and relaxing. The next time you're in the neighborhood, I highly recommend you stop in for a bite. Needless to say we were not seated anywhere near our reservation time. Our waitress was typical of the current terrible service in the restaurant industry. Takes order, brings drinks, and you never see them again until they bring the check. They have food runners bring the food out, so if you need anything, they just look at you like a deer in the headlights and walk away. We really liked the food, which is why I gave 4 stars. The pretzel with beer cheese appetizer is worth driving there for. The burger was very tasty and prepared well. I'll agree with other people in that it is a little too pricey. The appetizers shouldn't be the same price or higher than entrees, and the $3+ sodas are just ridiculous. I can see how some people think it's too loud in there, but I guarantee tonight was as packed as they get, and we didn't think it was too bad. Would not have been a bad choice - and for sure they have good chicken. But the choice to eat at the Brau Haus was almost like dying and going to heaven. It's a smaller place than I expected. But honestly - get over it really quick. You can not get chicken like they make anywhere I have been - not in Indianapolis. What ever the price I paid to drive there 75 minutes away? It was worth it. We ordered the chicken dinner for 2. And it came with a small portion of slaw..or a salad. Me and the wife are slaw people. And it was small...but really yummy. But not too long after - the star attraction arrived. A large place of chicken, 10 pieces..(not little weenie pieces) and mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans along with a few rolls and butter. The chicken was truly so hot - I had to pace myself eating because you could really see the steam coming off of it. But the skin...and the coating? My grandmother has passed many years ago - but I would have had to tell her she has serious competition. This chicken was surely what they serve if you get lucky enough to end up in heaven. The sides - the green beans and mashed potatoes were crazy good too and plenty warm. Our very pleasant waitress was Dawn and she was there to help with anything we needed. This truly is the tenderest most moist chicken you are going to get. I wanted to enjoy their pie also - but there was just no room in my belly and we were too far from home to cart 3 or 4 big pieces. I plan on taking that trip down I74 on the regular. It's a beautiful drive and quite honestly - Oldenburg is a super great place to visit. And for me - no need to try anyone elses chicken. I was disappointed it did not have grill marks as my friend's grilled chicken sandwich did. My other friend had the soup & salad lunch and the goat cheese salad was a beautiful presentation. We all agreed the food was good, though there was no wow factor - other than those wavy French fries. Our waitress was pleasant and checked on us appropriately.
