Brau Haus is a local German-themed locally owned tavern in the heart of Oldenburg. The place is cute inside, not upscale, but has a small town feel. Some of the booths are German style, giving you a European feel. Madison, our server, was friendly and attentive. The servers know the regulars by name and welcome them warmly. We sat in a booth near the kitchen and could hear a lot of laughter coming from the cooks in the back. The place is jovial. We ordered the Chicken Dinner for Two ($32) which includes about 10 pieces of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and choice of salad or slaw. This was a massive amount of food and could easily feed a family of four. The coleslaw was delicious, the best I've had in a while. The slaw was creamy and tart (not too sweet). The hand-breaded chicken is a winner in my book. The breading is crispy with lots of seasoning, especially pepper. The chicken is hot, moist and tender - perfectly cooked. This is some of the best fried chicken in the State. The potatoes and gravy are an indulgent treat for me. Yes, I had seconds. The green beans are cooked with bacon, yet light. My husband really liked the beans. We took half the meal home for dinner. The menu is German- themed, combined with traditional Hoosier classics. The Tenderlojn sandwich they serve put them on Indiana's Tenderloin Trail. I wanted to try the sauerkraut balls and pretzels, but I was too full. There is free street parking. I so looked forward to a good German meal, but for a German themed restaurant the options are meager. From what I heard from locals chicken meals are their claim to fame apparently. I ended up ordering a basic brat sandwich which was honestly not very good. It came on non toasted or grilled rye swirl bread. My friend and I split the sauerkraut balls which were small but fine. We both had ordered German Potato Salad only to be told after they were out. I ended up changing to the potato pancakes which I must say were delicious! They were side dish sized in diameter about 2 inches. I had never had them prepared this way but I did greatly enjoy them as a side. My friend had the wedge potatoes which were hot and plentiful in place of the potato salad. We both walked away full which was a win. I was just disappointed and or surprised by the minimal German options. I was hoping for different full meal options. I will give some slack on the potato salad being that it was a holiday weekend and staff was probably minimal and the patrons kept coming in while we dined. While in Oldenburg this restaurant is a must. Just a heads up if you are expecting authentic German meals you may not find what you are expecting. read more

We had a very good lunch ordering the sauerkraut balls, chicken dinner for two and German potato salad. Chicken was cooked perfectly, crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside. The breading has a hint of pepper, very good. The sauerkraut balls were very good. The German Potato salad is old school delicious, fantastic flavors and texture, no skin on the potatoes. Our server told us it was her mom's recipe. Nice list of German beers, we chose the Spaten Oktoberfest that was on tap. The service was as expected. I drove to this heavenly location, Oldenburg, IN for a long awaited Chicken dinner. I had originally planned on going to Wagner's. Would not have been a bad choice - and for sure they have good chicken. But the choice to eat at the Brau Haus was almost like dying and going to heaven. It's a smaller place than I expected. But honestly - get over it really quick. You can not get chicken like they make anywhere I have been - not in Indianapolis. What ever the price I paid to drive there 75 minutes away? It was worth it. We ordered the chicken dinner for 2. And it came with a small portion of slaw..or a salad. Me and the wife are slaw people. And it was small...but really yummy. But not too long after - the star attraction arrived. A large place of chicken, 10 pieces..(not little weenie pieces) and mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans along with a few rolls and butter. The chicken was truly so hot - I had to pace myself eating because you could really see the steam coming off of it. But the skin...and the coating? My grandmother has passed many years ago - but I would have had to tell her she has serious competition. This chicken was surely what they serve if you get lucky enough to end up in heaven. The sides - the green beans and mashed potatoes were crazy good too and plenty warm. Our very pleasant waitress was Dawn and she was there to help with anything we needed. This truly is the tenderest most moist chicken you are going to get. I wanted to enjoy their pie also - but there was just no room in my belly and we were too far from home to cart 3 or 4 big pieces. I plan on taking that trip down I74 on the regular. It's a beautiful drive and quite honestly - Oldenburg is a super great place to visit. And for me - no need to try anyone elses chicken. Problems here. Service very very very slow. There was a sewer smell in the eating area (seemed to be sewer gas back up not sewer on the floor, probably coming from a drain in kitchen or bathroom). The tenderloin sandwich I got was delicious and a huge portion. The fried chicken the women got was also delicious along with the sweet potato fries. Bean burger was too spicy for my daughter to eat (and she is a pretty discerning vegetarian food critic). Bathroom space was limited. $60 for three people is not bad for a sit down restaurant. The service was just so bad (not sure if the kitchen had anything to do with it, but the waitress (while pleasant) was ignoring our table. We stopped at Brau Haus on our way to Cincinnati for the weekend. We knew nothing of the cute town of Oldenburg or its restaurants. We literally searched food in our gps and this popped up. We ordered a patty melt with fries and my husband got a cup of chili. It wasn't honestly one of the best patty melts we've had in awhile and the chili was meaty and hearty with noodles. Not too spicy but flavorful. Our service was excellent, we were able to ears quickly and get back on the road. read more

It seems like the new management is missing a few skills that the previous owners possessed. Today I ordered 2 Chicken Dinners for 2. I drove all the way from Sunman, the food wasn't ready yet and when they did bring it out they forgot the mashed potatoes, gravy and green beans. To top it off when I got home We only had 12 pieces of chicken. It seems the kitchen staff need some support and education as to what their dinners include. I'm just so glad I checked everything. What has happened to the Brau Haus? The service was fine but our pork tenderloin sandwiches were greasy and tasteless, much inferior to what the Brau Haus used to serve. Ditto the soft pretzels. On a beautiful spring day, the deck is the perfect place for a delicious, leisurely lunch. On the recommendation of our server, we split the tenderloin with a side of potato pancakes. I added a glass of pinot grigio - which although I don't know the brand was a perfect compliment and crazy affordable! The tenderloin had a tasty, light breading- and I especially liked the pepper. If you want chicken it's okay. Good amount seasoning, our was a little overcooked. They cut their a bit differently, one oof my pieces was a back not much meat. I almost never give reviews, much less bad ones. I figure everyone can have a bad day. However, I consider it an act of mercy to warn people about this establishment. The decorations were the only thing good about this place. It's sad, because years ago my parents raved about Oldenburg and the food. My child's chicken fingers were so burnt they were inedible. The service was mediocre at best, my schnitzel was mediocre to passing, as was the tenderloin. I truly hope they're able to turn this place around! read more

Although they make believe this restaurant is not German. The selection of German food is very minimal. We had the kraut balls (good) German potato salad (decent) green beans (poor and canned) pork tenderloin sandwich (good but laced seasoning and I've had better) and the peach cobbler with ice cream (fair). The service was decent but I had to ask for a couple of things multiple times. The restaurant is in an older building but is clean. The booths are tight and can be difficult to get in and out. The parking lot is tight and the handicapped parking area can be difficult to access and required careful maneuvering when leaving. read more

I came here for the first time with a large group after hearing about the amazing fried chicken. We had family style reservations on a Saturday night. We showed up with the table ready and I quickly realized the inside makes you feel like you are back at grandma's house - it's so cozy. We were offered coleslaw or side salad to start (the salad bar is closed due to covid) and the meal consisted of large bowls of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, white chicken gravy, Hawaiian rolls, buttered noodles, and green beans. Everything was heavenly but that fried chicken was to die for. I don't even love fried chicken but WOW, it was seriously phenomenal! Severed this way, it's all you can eat and even includes your drink. They let you take leftovers home too. They have a rotating dessert menu but that is an additional cost. Some of the best "country cookin'" I've ever had at such an affordable price ($15/person) with excellent service. Definitely make a day trip of this and shopping around nearby Metamora. Parking can be a little tricky - there's a small lot next to the old house turned restaurant - but I've always been able to find close street parking too. I came back a couple weeks later, craving that delicious food. They have a chicken dinner for two special with fried chicken, veg of the day, rolls, mashed potatoes, and gravy. My friend also ordered fries. Everything was just as good, although I was sad they didn't have buttered noodles that day. It's only $23 for this deal which again is an amazing price for so much food! Even the fries were spot on. Honestly this is one of my new absolute favorite Indiana restaurants. You have got to try this sweet German spot! read more

The food was very good. I had the tenderloin. They are on the Indiana tenderloin trail. It was a bit spicy compared to others I have had. I ordered German potato salad and they were out, which was disappointing. I was looking forward to some authentic German food. The waitress was friendly & efficient. My husband had sauerkraut & he said it was good. He had the fried chicken and said it was good. This was a Beer Garden ambience. It fit the bill.
