Unfortunately, my experience this time was completely different. I brought in a simple double layered dress that only needed to be hemmed and was quoted $140, more than the dress itself! I was told that because it had two layers, it was essentially like "hemming two dresses." At $70 a layer, I guess every layer counts. I then asked about simply taking in the waist of a pair of jeans. I was initially quoted $25, but after looking at them again, I was told there was suddenly "a lot more work" involved and that I had been quoted incorrectly. At that point, I took both items and left. I went to another alterations shop and was quoted under $100 for BOTH the dress and the jeans. It seems management may have changed since my last visit, which is unfortunate because I was previously very happy with their work. Hopefully the pricing doesn't continue in this direction, because $140 to hem a simple dress is pretty hard to justify.

Historically, I was charged around $85-$100 for this type of alteration, so I was extremely surprised by my experience today. I also want to mention that I have always loved the tailor here. She is incredibly precise, detailed, and fair priced. I have always been happy with her work, and she is a big reason I continued coming back over the years. The tailor I have always used was still working here, but it appears the business is now under new management. I was quoted $180 to hem a double-lined dress and $210 for a dress with three layers. That is an enormous increase from what I have paid for essentially the same service over the years. I politely declined and took my dresses to another dry cleaner up the street (still in Hoboken). They charged me $85 for the double-lined dress and $125 for the three-layer dress - which was much more in line with what I have historically paid. I completely understand that prices increase and that businesses have to adjust their pricing, but these prices felt excessive, especially given my long history as a customer and the fact that I was able to get the exact same alterations done elsewhere for significantly less. Very disappointing to see such a drastic change at a place I had trusted for years. I will not be coming back.

As a new attorney back in the day, I took a lot of suits to Dominico...and although he was definitely more expensive than your average dry cleaners alterations lady (usually ladies), his work was SPECTACULAR. Seriously. The first item I took him was a wool gabardine coat (Perry Ellis--vintage)...with shoulders way too big. (Got it at a charity shop...for about $30 in the city.,.) He made that coat look like a million bucks. Also, did a bunch of alterations on more expensive, but off-the-rack wool/cashmere suits. Again--perfect fit. Once I took him a 100%, tailored suit I got at TARGET...I loved the lines, and he made it look like an Armani suit. He said it had good bones--otherwise he'd tell me that it "wasn't worth it." I have used Nelson a few times. I think Nelson might have worked with Dominico Spoleti (like as an apprentice). Anyway--Nelson has the same skill set...and most importantly, the SAME DEDICATION to QUALITY, custom tailoring He knows what he is doing. You are not going to necessarily get your clothes back the next day..but if you bring in an expensive suit or piece or dress--and explain, he will tailor it beautifully. TOP QUALITY REAL TAILOR--not your run-of-mill alterations shop at a dry cleaners. And--yes, they are more expensive..but WORTH IT if you have a quality piece of clothing. Lastly: I recall sitting in that shop and investment bankers from LONDON would make appointments to get their zillion-dollar Saville suits tailored by Dominico Spoletti. Nelson is his protege... Alterations can be tricky…read more If they charge a lot you may assume it's great (and it might not be.) If they don't charge enough you assume it's bad (and it might not be.) Alterations to go is a nice balance. I recently got a new pair of Paige jeans hemmed and it only set me back $15. Both sides even, nice cuff - not much more you could ask for. Looks like the store did it themselves. I have a jacket that needs some zipper work and another pair of dress pants for work (that I might need sometime in 2022 at this point) so I'll be come here for both of those. The staff is generally fine, although there is one woman who tends to be curt. Most recently, I went and the 3 staff started laughing when I came out of the fitting room. They asked if I spoke Spanish. When I replied no, they proceeded to speak in Spanish. It was strange to ask and the rest of the interaction was uncomfortable. When I asked for clarity on a price the attitude I got back was enough to walk away. $60 for any dress that has a lining; even if it's a simple cotton sundress. Ruined My Graduation Dress and Then Treated Me Rudely ! I…read morerarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was so disappointing that I feel obligated to warn others. Three days before my graduation, I brought in a brand-new white Donna Karan dress that I had purchased only two days earlier. The dress had never been worn. The only issue was that it had gotten wet during delivery and developed a few yellow water stains. Before leaving the dress, I specifically asked whether the stains could be removed. I explained that the dress was for my graduation and that I needed it back quickly. I was clearly told that the stains could be treated and that the dress could be properly cleaned and pressed. Based on that assurance, I trusted them with an important garment for one of the most special days of my life and paid for expedited service. While the dress was returned on time, the actual service was a complete failure. The stains were still there. In fact, the dress looked just as bad, if not worse, than when I brought it in. When I got ready for my graduation and took a closer look, I realized the dress was not wearable. At that point, it was too late to find another solution. What makes this even more frustrating is that this review is not about the $22 charge. It is about trust. If the stains could not be removed, I should have been told that from the beginning. Instead, they accepted the dress, assured me the work could be done, charged me for the service, and returned it without fixing the problem. To make matters worse, they also removed the original Donna Karan tag from the dress and did not reattach it or return it to me. This was a brand-new designer dress, and there was absolutely no reason for the tag to be removed without my permission. The final disappointment came when I called to express my concerns. The person who answered the phone identified herself as the manager and was extremely rude, dismissive, and completely uninterested in taking responsibility for what happened. There was no apology, no attempt to understand the situation, and no effort to make things right. This business did not simply fail to clean a dress. They ruined an important moment that I can never get back. A graduation only happens once, and because of their poor workmanship, lack of transparency, and terrible customer service, I was left stressed and disappointed right before a milestone event in my life. Please read the reviews carefully before trusting this business with any important garment, especially a new or special-occasion item.
