I wish I could remember the male doctors name who "helped" me.. Well no, he actually rolled his eyes at my answers to his questions, accused me of lying, and was overall completely disrespectful. The nurses weren't too nice either. Mostly Know it all inconsiderate people who work here. read more

Great staff and very understanding about every minior and major patients problems.

I have tried several specialist at St. Charles Medical Center and I am disappointed with the care. I feel my medical conditions cannot be treated in Bend, and That the only option for quality medical care is for me to drive to Portland. This is unacceptable for a booming city such as Bend. Horrible! Left the same way I came in after a car accident these people are rude and inconsiderate. Go and you get to see some nurse practitioner who has no clue. Billing department treats you pretty terrible to. A plus on making people feel worse then they did coming in. read more

My wife and I had to go to the ER after a horseback riding accident while on vacation near Bend. We went to Saint Charles as it was the closest human hospital. We found the hospital staff very caring and happy to be doing their jobs. I have been to other hospitals in the Eastern US where hospital staff are not happy. This transformed a scary difficult time into a safe reassuring experience. read more

I just had my first baby here and I cannot think of anything to complain about, all the nurses were amazing, they listened to what we wanted, they were all extremely nice, helped with absolutely everything I needed, and answered my 200 questions with no problem. Even the room service and cleaning lady's were so kind and congratulated us! The rooms are large and updated and private, we had lots of visitors and space was never an issue... definitely recommend this birthing center! read more

5 stars for ER. We are here out of town and our child hot her head having fun. We got lucky to hit the ER at dinner time so no one was waiting. This was one of the fastest ER visits in my lifetime. We never saw a doctor but all of the nurses and NP were extremely nice and very warm and friendly to our daughter. It was just like being home with our regular GP. I know some people have commented on nurse attitudes but please keep in mind these hard working individuals work very long shifts and long weeks. So be patient as a patient. Your emergency is not their only one of the floor. read more

I entered St. Charles last Thurs. for back surgery. From my very first contact with hospital staff, I was very favorably impressed. Nick in pre-op was very cheery & professional. He couldn't seem to draw my blood so another fellow came in & got it out of my hand. I have large bruises on both forearms from Nick's efforts. I just think he needs a bit more training in this area. I couldn't tell you much about the surgery but all went well & I healed faster than anyone expected. I must compliment recovery room nurse Lisa. She was wonderful! Put me at ease & handled all things with graceful aplomb. I'd give her a raise. My room was spacious & comfortable. Rest of nursing staff was very good to excellent. Food was excellent & promptly served. Checkout was fast & efficient. It's never fun having surgery but this was truly a positive experience for me. Well done to all! read more

the ER staff does what it can, BUT when they don't understand what is wrong with a person they can be just plane mean! I have a condition known as CVS (cyclic vomiting syndrome) sometimes AKA abdominal mygrain. they "the ER staff " think anyone who comes in with this condition is a drug seeker and is treated so badly it is a crime. if you can get past the ER and up stairs you will be treated like a human being. they should not let their ER staff stay or should be rotated out monthly because they become so mean and think anyone with my condition is just there for drugs. Well ofcourse! drugs are the only to stop the attack! two months ago I was there 7 days in a row and was treated os bad until the 7th day and a Dr from Bend memorial clinic (a hospitalist) took pitty on me and admited me and I was there for 4 days. the ER staff is the most crule I have incountered in 23 years of this illness. once I complained about the way I was treated and was told we will never help you again. the staff is so uninformed in the ER and just plain mean it is no wonder they hire huge security gards. again if you can get upstairs the people are so nice. The ER staff has no idea about my illness and just don't care, then say get out! I ask the hospital adminastrators to have the ER staff to please go to this web site CVSA.com and learn about this condition. if they don't understand and you ask for the medication you need and it is a narcotic then you are a drug seeker and they kick you out, 7 days in a row by ambulance and the meanist treatment by educated people but they are just uninformed and have become very uncareing and just plain mean. I would leave ny name but afraid of the way I would be treated the next time. then again I bet nobody at the hospital reads this site or cares. the worst ER staff I have ever incountered and they really think they know what they are doing and know more about my illness than me after my 23 years of it. read more

My son was seen for a possible appendicitis. The duration of our visit was underwhelming to say the least Answers were hard to come by. As in we received different answers, or contradictory answers multiple times. Once we made it out of the er and into a room (after 8 hours) we rarely saw a nurse or doctor. Our ER RN was great with our young son, and the housekeeping staff was very helpful. But, beyond that, I can understand why this hospital has the reputation it does. We left with very little information and definitely felt as though we could have had better care. Two days after our discharge our son still has on-going symptoms. We are hoping to have some real answers after a visit with our pediatrician. And REALLY hoping to not need to return to this facility. I would definitely consider traveling to Portland before coming back here if possible. And would absolutely not seek out any elective care from here. read more

We took a friend into the ER after her surgery had complications and may I say I can tell why you guys had a mersa outbreak because it is disgusting. We had 3 fabulous nurses but unfortunately we can't rank the hospital very high because to me cleanliness in a hospital is huge and this place was filthy. All I know is I'd rather go elsewhere if I ever need assistance rather then risk setting foot in a filthy hospital. read more

Re: St. Charles Hospice Pallitive Care Service: Our family has had a very negative experience with St. Charles Hospice Care. This was due to very poor communication on their part, regarding the type of care they intended to provide for our Mom. Without her or our permission, she was taken off of all her medication and we did not find out for two months. This has caused her to decline rapidly and caused us great distress. If you use this service be sure you understand that Hopsice care means END OF LIFE care and they will discontinue life sustaining medications. They have admitted that they did not properly communicate with the family before proceeding with life changing care decisions. read more

zero stars! if you love your life and family, then drive over the cascades, to anywhere else!! silverton hospital, ohsu, adventist, or roque valley hospital /providence hospital in the valley. this hospital is a totalitarian run " prison" for it's physicians...their " constraints," result in a total lack of care. they charge almost three times as other hospitals in state, care only about money,( they made plenty last year, when patient volume is low, they simply raise the charges on the uninformed "victims", who are actually seen.) filthy environment ( an elderly woman advised " greeter" that the bathroom was disgusting...), i was not there for pain meds, but heard pleas from next room, denied, then patient was offered "motrin". i stopped getting diagnostics here, as that is all that is offered...plenty of cat scans available, ""step right up folks!" ...the er. doctors are there to drive up costs with diagnostic tests...watch out when they tell you, its your appendix...let's remember, technically you can live without one, and st. charles is all too happy to relieve you of that burden...(at the price of your arm and a leg!) really, they seem convenient, and the nurses appeared kind, but beaten...i mentioned, maybe, " you will get another hospital to compete with, and your constant employment troubles in nursing staff and inability to retain " good" doctors will change? " her response, a whisper... " from your lips, to god's ears. " say a prayer as you enter at "significant risk"...if you value loved ones...spend the time, but way less money...and go anywhere else in the state ( sadly, madras and prineville too, are all of the same dictatorial regime..."get outta dodge" any way you can!! good people of oregon...wake up!! we deserve better care...and certainly, for the subsequent robbery about to occur with receipt of your bill. god bless the uninformed, and those without options to go elsewhere... read more

I would give zero stars, if it allowed me to, but the lowest it allows is 1 out of 5 stars. The nurses are great and the clinics are good, but the business office is so disorganized and uncaring. They have no idea what is going on and have made a lot of mistakes when it comes to their billing. Recently I paid off all my accounts on 11/30/18 and got a bill dated 12/8/18, saying I still owed the full amount I had just paid off, so I called and they said it must have been a mistake, because it shows paid off and said it posted on 12/5. I told her the bill is dated 12/8/18. She said she didn't know why I got the bill and again said it must have been a mistake. This is only one of their many mistakes in this last year. You need to watch them and the billing like a hawk or they will mess up your billing and not show payments that have been made, so you end up double paying if you don't watch closely and question them. In my experience the organization is shady and I do not trust them, although, like I said earlier their nurse are great and vary caring. read more

Terrible hospital, horribly mismanaged. I spent so long waiting in the ER that I eventually passed out from the pain. Somehow, they get away with charging well above the state average for mediocre care. I cannot believe that this is all Central Oregon has to offer in terms of a major hospital. read more

i would not go to this ER again. i fell off a horse and was experiencing horrible back pain - I could barely walk! Security came to my car and loaded me into a wheelchair. Once inside the ER I was checked in and asked about my pain level on a scale of 1 to 10, I said 12!! Then I proceeded to wait and wait and wait. I tired to use the restroom but there was literally crap smeared on the toilet seat. I waited some more, i was in extreme pain and very uncomfortable not knowing how badly I had messed up my back. I couldn't even get an Advil. I waited some more and then decided to leave so I could least take some asprin or something to help my pain. I struggled through the night at home and saw my doctor the next day for X-rays etc... My time at the ER was a horrible experience; the staff didn't seem to notice or care that I was in extreme pain and could possibly have been seriously hurt. I thought it was the best place to go but it was a huge painful waste of time. read more

I have been dealing with ankle pain for about 5 days. Was traveling from Washington when my ankle pain became so severe...I couldn't walk. It was very painful. I decided to go to ER as I was worried about a blood clot as I had had several procedures in the last 6 months. Dr. Jessica M Mathieson was my doctor. She had the worst bedside manner of any doctor I have interacted with. She treated me as if I was stupid for even being there for this reason. Disregarded how much pain I was in...even questioning me how I got to the hospital and how I walked in to the hospital. I'm not sure what she was trying to say other than she didn't believe me. She didn't want to do an ultrasound until I pretty much said I wanted one to rule out a blood clot. She did a quick in the room ultrasound and said it looked normal. When Technician did a full ultrasound she said there was fluid around the tendon. When She came back in she says everything is normal...you MAY have possible tendinitis. She says...I ordered you some crutches...you said you couldn't walk. No pain medicine was offered for aftercare....nor did I even ask. She had previously stated she was going to hold off on giving me pain meds as I was driving...I said I didn't want any because I was driving myself. Frankly this woman made me feel bad about going to the ER...did nothing to offer me help in Terms of pain relief. Made me feel uncomfortable. I really wonder sometimes why some of these people choose to be doctors..do they really want to help people? In the end I left knowing it wasn't a blood clot...which was good, but I cannot put weight on my foot without a stabbing knife feeling in my ankle. I have follow up with my doctor to get to the root of it and get treatment. Jessica..I hope you get to read this. You were rude...and you made me feel bad about seeking treatment. You need to change...or choose another profession. My discharge papers stated I had tendinitis in my ankle....not I may have it. It was as if she didn't want to admit I had anything wrong. read more

A few days ago, 3/19/2015 I had what can only be described as an appalling experience in the St. Charles ER. I do fully intend to pursue filing a complaint with the hospital, and I might well end up suing for malpractice. I came in with stroke symptoms and 10 out of 10 pain. My mother told the triage/check in nurse (Peggy) that we suspected a stroke, which is proper protocol. I sat waiting in a wheelchair for about 10-15 minutes before she even checked me in, most of which time she spent chatting to a coworker. I then spent four hours in the waiting room. I do not begrudge the suspected heart attack patient who got in before me, but I do have to complain about the abdominal pain patient and the back pain patient who got into rooms before I did. Fortunately, it turned out that I only had a complex migraine, and I was not physically harmed by the St. Charles ER ignoring me for four hours as I writhed in pain, threw up multiple times. lost vision in one eye, and experienced cognitive impairment, and had over a dozen full blown panic attacks that made me stop breathing. At one point a nurse said he would find somebody to do an EKG because I was experiencing chest pains, but nobody ever came out to do it. Once I got into a room and saw the doctor, my care was acceptable and medically appropriate. The wait time, however, was completely appalling. If I had been having a stroke, there is a fair chance that I could have died or been left permanently disabled. I'm lucky that I was only experiencing the worst pain of my life (and that's saying something as I am a chronic pain sufferer and live with a high level of pain daily) and significant distress. The St. Charles ER has also previously literally nearly killed my mother during an Addisonian crisis. Her neurologist has set her up with the necessary medication to save her life at home if she has another crisis, because SCMC cannot be relied upon. Unfortunately, we cannot have the same backup system for me. Unfortunately at this time, St Charles is the only hospital in Central Oregon, and therefore the only local option. People might be better off just heading to Portland or Eugene to go to a different hospital if they have safe transportation and will survive the trip. It'd probably be faster (recent wait times in the ER have been as long as 7 hours) and more likely to result in proper treatment. SCMC is better than nothing, but it is certainly not reliably high quality. I will say that I have had a few good experiences there, and that most of the physicians are well trained and that once you actually get seen, the staff usually provide adequate care. There are some physicians that I would suggest avoiding, such as Dr. Pamela Tornay, but most of the SCMC nurses, PAs, and doctors are decent. Some are outstanding, but it's really a gamble I sincerely hope that another hospital comes to the area, so patients have an alternative option (and so there is fiscal competition). read more

I am currently admitted into the hospital with below 85% oxygen and I'm even hooked up to oxygen. I keep complaining of Nausea and the nurse "Carmela, and Carie" keep trying to give me a medication that I'm allergic to. I threw up my pain pill and they refused to give me pain meds through the iv. I'm beyond pissed. I keep asking to speak with a doctor and yet no one is listening to me and my body. What a sad excuse for a hospital. I would rather be at home dying then here. read more

The ER is an absolute joke! I've been sitting here for an hour with the absolute worst pain one can imagine and nothing!. I think this hospital take for granted that it is the only hospital in this area, hence if you want to be seen you have to suck up to their bullshit...in the metro are they would never have you waiting like this. The most you'll wait is a good 30mins tops on the busiest of days. I pray to God I maintain good health whilst I am in this town. I had my gall bladder removed in July of 2015. I found the hospital staff to be very attentive and really had little to complain about. But I took into account that I was not the only patient there and I was not at my own home where I treat myself as the only one there. I know there are complaints and believe me I read them. All of them. I agree that sometimes the experience is not good. I've been in the emergency room when I was not treated as I thought I should be. I believe we all have bad days, and Drs. and nurses are no different. My exposure to them was temporary and I was not happy to be there under those circumstances, .I figure my opinions are worth what anyone else's would be. I would say that if you have a bad experience there, then, you need to consider what I have just said, and make your critical observation based not on one visit, but after at least 2 or 3. This is the only way you can accurately measure anything. To the Hospital, I would say that I understand that you have to handle things like a Business. But if you mistreat people in any way, due to the nature of your business, you are sadly mistaken. Hospitals, Teachers, and Cops need to realize that people look UP to you and therefore, your behavior has to be better than average to equal the same as anyone else's. In other words, if your "bedside manner" doesn't exceed someone else's, you are in trouble. Oh yes, you are. Don't think bad behavior won't get around, and soon it will affect your job and your place of business. Be nice. Even if the people you treat don't deserve it. I used to be in the car business and I did a lot for our Service department. However, we got a lot of complaints and were outrageous, I thought. I knew our guys worked hard to please. I knew a Service Writer at the time who told me one day that they always had to take into account the fact that people came in there with sometimes serious problems that were going to hit their pockets hard. That would put them in a bad mood to start with. Then, of course, their comments later might not be so good. Since they were not physicians, treating the human body, how much more would a real physician have to be diplomatic and gentle? Think about it. read more

Any industry usually involves a mix of good and not-so-good characters. In truth, medical providers in central OR, e.g., physicians, nurses, techs., etc., and ER's are, on average, neither significantly better or worse than anywhere else. Yet, statewide, a stigma has attached itself to St. Charles having to do with a reputation for back-water, "US vs. THEM", horse-and-buggy politics. However, during a decades-long career transversing several states, I have managed despite occasional dysfunctional organizational politics. So, when I reluctantly agreed to transfer to this area, I kept an open mind. It didn't take long before the cracks began to show. Petty, over-reactive, ego-driven behavior is to be expected when players in closed system, accustomed to a high level of local control, are confronted with change from the outside (e.g., like a small-town police dept. that devolves into a predictable & convenient good-old-gals/boys system). While some dysfunction can occur in anywhere, in the unfortunate case of St. Charles, a set of maladaptive personalities converged in a specific department of the hospital. As a result, wherein this group is involved, even the most innocuous, everyday communication runs the risk of becoming the target of massive negative distortion. A simple, routine business transaction calmly conducted in a non-problematic manner with any other provider, is converted to cannon fodder in the minds of these cronies. Insipid complaints, underhanded comments, finger-pointing, openly accusatory behavior during business meetings and absurd retaliatory attacks are commonplace events. Somewhere along the line, breach of contract, slander and defamation of character have been normalized. Such an uncommonly high level of instrumental aggression as modus operandi signals the extent to which the system has outstripped the adaptive capacity of small-town management style. The time for bringing in better-trained, well-grounded leadership, savvy in healthy group dynamics and capable of navigating change in larger-scale operations, is clearly past due. It may be possible to gradually reverse the damage, but first, the Board of Directors needs to take control and kick the fox out of the henhouse. Routing out entrenched reactionary politics and correcting the course of interagency relationships will require dedicated energy, intelligence and vision. Meanwhile, weak attempts to restructure the positions of those individuals in hopes of a more positive result is something like expecting burnt-out cathode ray tubes to function better than the motherboard of a new laptop. Good luck with that. read more

My wife had major surgery at this hospital. Her doctor ordered her to stay at the hospital at least overnight, two days, before authorizing her to come home if medically stable. The hospital had pre-approved the stay with our insurance company. The hospital, without discussing it with us, or giving us an estimated co-pay, listed her and approved the stay with our insurance, Blue Cross, as an OUTPATENT even though she was hooked to an IV to receive fluids and medications due to the surgery and being observed by professionals to ensure she was not bleeding due to the procedure. Since she was listed as an outpatient instead of an inpatient we received a bill for thousands of dollars when our insurance would have paid all but $360 if listed as an hospitalization (inpatient) . The hospital told me that it is their policy to list all persons in their hospital as outpatients unless they stay more than 72 hours. When I asked to see the policy in writing the billing department refused to show me the policy or allow me to talk to their supervisor. WARNING: I WILL NOT USE THIS HOSPITAL AGAIN DUE TO THIS POLICY. OTHER HOSPITALS DO NOT REQUIRE A 72 HOUR STAY. IF YOU DO USE THIS HOSPITAL , MAKE SURE YOU ARE PRE-APPROVED AS AN IMPATIENT AND GIVEN AN ESTIMATE OF YOUR CO-PAY RESPONSIBILITY COSTS. read more

I came into the ER with a broken ankle and in distress. After checking in I sat in one of two chairs away from the rest of the waiting area and started conversing with my friend. I was in a lot of pain and under a lot of stress, but speaking quietly. In the conversation I used the f word. Unbeknownst to me a security guard was standing right behind me and took offence to my language and proceeded to lecture me. I am in my mid thirties, speaking in a quiet voice and in excruciating pain and was in no mood for such a lecture. The waiting room was mostly empty, no one was sitting near me and it was something that he easily could have overlooked. Rather than let it go when I was clearly displeased with what he was saying to me he escalated the situation even more so, called more security and I ended uphaving a major panic attack. Rather than assisting the security then told me I had to leave. With out treatment. I told them at that point I would go to another hospital 25 min away and they let me know they would contact them to tell them not to treat me either. So I got to spend the night in major pain, having no treatment and feeling epically disrespected. I wasnt not even aware that a hospital could refuse service to an injured person like that. I was honestly devastated in addition to being injured. read more

Had to take my sister to the ER on a Saturday night as she fell down some stairs and and couldn't put any pressure on her leg without a tremendous amount of pain. She is not a dramatic person so I knew when she was crying and trying to hold herself together, it was serious. When we got to the ER at 11 PM it was very full and we knew we would have to wait. What we didn't expect was having to wait 4 hours to get in! We considered leaving and coming back but as the night/morning progressed we knew it was too serious to leave. Finally at 3 a.m. we were called in. Didn't get home until 5:30 a.m. The staff was stressed out and as explained to us, there was only one Dr on duty. Absolutely ridiculous! This has nothing to do with financing, insurance, etc. as we are good there. When in central OR you have not other options in the middle of the night. St. Charles needs to get their #### together. read more
