Every time my Husband or I have had to go to st Charles they have been entirely unhelpful. It seems they are understaffed. Not enough rooms. Long wait times. I came here today, may 8th 2025 to be with my fiancée to give birth to our second child. we arrive and the front person did 'NOT care when we told her that her water broke. she then acted as if we were there on a false alarm. Continuing to add to the BS, the nurse who came in also didn't believe us until we finally saw my fiancées underwear. It shouldnt have taken almost an hour, if not longer, to get a room for my fiancée who was in labor. Not only this, but as a father, you get treated as a "guest", even tho this experience is literally for both parents. They force father figures to pay for their own food and services, causing you to feel as if you have to leave to take care of simple things such as eating. I am baffled by all of this, as our last experience was mid COVID, and it felt like a better experience then, than now. Disgusting behavior from room service, hanging up on me after I told them I didn't want food anymore for myself because it wasn't included. They charge restaurant prices for food that tastes like it's made of dog food. the nurses were awesome, but it felt like more of a "hey look at this pregnant lady giving birth and learn something" rather than it feeling like we were having a child together. read more

I will try and put into words how amazed I was by our experience during our son's surgery today. I cannot believe the ratings are so low. The care we received was world class. After checking in at admissions we were to our surprise greeted by a woman who I believe had a title along the lines of child patient advocate. She walked us to the waiting room, explained what to expect next, asked us if we had questions and was very personable. Next the nurses who did The intake was very knowledgeable, caring and hard working , as I could tell she had multiple patients but was regardless patient and thorough with us. The next nurse who prepared him for pre-op was smiling friendly and caring. Next we had a nurse who did the iv in his arm be very quick and painless each nurse made sure to ask questions and explain thoroughly. The nurse who took him back was friendly, caring, patient and just overall above and beyond. The surgeon was able to complete the surgery with one incision instead of 2 like anticipated. This was all accomplished in a timely manner. the nurse who wheelchaired him to the car after her and another nurse got him ready to go were both friendly and helpful. The facilities and Cafe were beautiful and comfortable as well. I came in scared and ready to cry and left in awe of how much care goes into what these heroes do. I recently was admitted to St. Charles hospital and was totally treated with respect. I know it sounds crazy, but I've never felt so loved and cared for and most of my life. The nurses and technicians were incredible. I wanted to stay another night just because I felt so cared for. I barely saw a doctor for more than one minute, but the nurses and technicians took care of me, the food was great also. I felt like I was staying in a five star hotel by the way I was treated. There were a couple of glitches with the TV and not getting a newspaper, but it was not a big deal. I really wanted to stay because I felt so loved and cared for. read more

If there were zero stars, this is what I would rate St Charles in Bend. Unfortunately I have already had a terrible experience with the location in La Pine. However, because I was very sick, we ended up at the Bend location just after Christmas. We waited for two hours, and the consultation was around 2 hours where I was given a number of treatments for my asthma complications as a result of flu. They created a prescription for much-needed drugs, but only phoned through two of them to the pharmacy. I tried to get them to phone through the rest, but they kept on saying I would get a call-back. They never called back. I called them again and again. They just don't care. I URGENTLY needed drugs and they couldn't be bothered to do the right thing and call the pharmacy. So I had to go again through the process with another clinic wasting everyone's valuable time, money and also putting my health at risk. Please avoid St Charles. They're terrible. read more

I just had a colon ostomy with Dr. Hartwell and Anesthesiologist Tierney (Not sure of spelling) and RN Roma and was blown away. Outstanding care with real caring staff. They are intelligent, efficient, caring and great human beings. Highly recommend St. Charles as I have always hated hospitals and never had a good experience until now. Also the ER across the street had great doctors and nurses. I even remembered their names, Sage, Riley and Jessica and I do not remember names only faces so that just goes to show how impressed I was and felt safe and taken care of. read more

While I cannot share the details of the meeting, I can say they are making investments in patient safety I have not seen in larger institutions. I took my 20 year old daughter who is 4.5 months pregnant to the ER at midnight. she had been vomiting non stop for two days, and may have internal bleeding. they Completely ignored her. She is in terrible pain. There was no wait. Anyone who came in after her got seen right away. They don't care At All!!! i finally had to come get her because she was so hurt emotionally that they ignored her. I called the hospital and told them about it and they Laughed At Me!!! It was just after 6:30 a.m. when the pre-op nurse checked in with me again to ask "How are you feeling?" as I waited on the surgeon and anesthesiologist to come by before being wheeled to the operating room. Given I was laying nude under a heated blanket, even sans makeup per pre-op instructions, and had never had surgery before I told her, "I'm feeling a little vulnerable since this is my first time in surgery." Just at this point, the surgeon popped in and said, "How about that! Me too!" Ta dum. Pitch perfect to make me laugh. I had enough time to plan for this non elective procedure to check out the doctors I wanted on board and also where I wanted the surgery done. The right doctors make all the difference, and these were excellent physicians. We are fortunate to have that kind of specialty medical talent in Bend. And warts and all for our current health care system, as a patient I am grateful to be able to choose the medical professionals I want involved. This time, just as had been my husband's experience with surgery last year at the St. Charles' Medical Center (hospital), the patient intake and ER nursing staff in the surgical unit were top notch. From pre-op phone calls, to patient prep after check in, to surgical assistance to post op patient care and instructions, all was handled so well to keep the patient informed every step of the way and as comfortable as possible. Also for anxious family members waiting for information on their loved ones in surgery, the hospital provides comfortable places to wait and friendly volunteers to help with this or that. If you must have surgery, St. Charles is a great place to have it done in Bend. Politics of managment issues aside, and there have been plenty of those issues in the last five years, and labor union ups and downs aside, and there have been plenty of those too, the staff facing the patients does a great job. I just moved into town and had crashed on My mtn bike and broke 4 ribs . I went into St Charles as a walk-in . Lady at the desk was not very friendly and that followed suit onto the Dr and Xray tech in fact the Xray tech asked if She needed to do a pee test on me ! Dr did prescribe me painkillers but made me feel like it was wrong ! Not sure if you all ever had broken ribs but it is severe pain for months. I went back in to get a refill after 2wks. I asked how long the wait was and she said only one ahead . The lobby only had one person and they got called in . I sat and watched 4 people go in ahead of me and the girl scowl at me admitting . I was on a camping trip with my family from out of town and needed medical attention. And I'm so glad I found St. Charles Hospital in Bend. From the minute I walked into the emergency department I was taken care of in a very kind, efficient and professional matter. It was about 7 o'clock at night when I checked in with a friendly lady (unfortunately I don't remember her name). The check in was easy and quick. After only spending a short period in the waiting area I was seen by a wonderful triage nurse (Jacquie). She asked me some questions and I was immediately taken into a room where another nurse (Mike) looked after me. The room and the hospital itself is very clean and modern. Mike took some blood, brought me warm blankets and started an IV line. Just shortly afterwards I was seen by Dr. Ryan Petersen and nurse Emma who did an exam. Both were very respectful and professional. I also had to get an ultrasound and Erin made me feel calm and took care of me ever so gently. As my husband and son were waiting in our RV just outside on the parking lot we were given a list with nearby hotels and parking facilities, which was truly thoughtful. Both my husband and son were able to come and see me for a short period of time for some much needed support. Later that night I was discharged and Cody one of the hospital administrators took my details. We had a brief yet deep conversation and I could feel that I was not just a number or patient, but a human being with physical and emotional needs. The staff at St. Charles hospital is just excellent. They do listen and they do care!! Dr. Petersen came to see me one more time before leaving the hospital and handing me my discharge papers as well as explaining what had happened and how to handle the aftercare. Even though I was relieved to leave the hospital Nurse Mike made farewell just a little harder! Mike: you are an amazing nurse and such a wonderful person with a big heart! I'm so thankful for you! I must say that I'm more than impressed with the care this hospital provides. The emergency department surely has a fantastic team and everyone is going out of their way to make patients feel comfortable, reassured and safe. I have never felt cared for when going here, they do not take symptoms serious. If you're younger adult female with tattoos, be prepared to be asked if you're a intravenous drug user by every person you see. I was asked 3-4 times during the same visit. This hospital kept me from my dying father they decided to do the most unimaginable to my father . He was there for c-diff and then he became sicker My brother told the hospital that he was the POA but he wasnt and they never verified that information they took my brothers word for it and they went along with my brother and put my father as a private patient and that I was not allowed to know anything about the care of my father well my father passed away after 14 days. I kept calling the hospital to tell them that I was the personal rep according to the will and that i needed to know what is going on with my father I was even listed as an emergency contact. they proceeded to get my dad to sign a POA for my brother 2 days before he died and was not in his right mind. I first want to say I have a great deal of respect for the medical community. Usually they are very special group of people that truly care. Unfortunately, my last encounter was not gratifying or soothing. I felt the doctor, Dr. Stenberg di nothing more than run tests, diagnose there was nothing wrong, and totally dismissed me. I went to Redmond ER April 1st a 4:00 am. I have been having trouble breathing and a great deal of mucus in my throat. I was scared to go to sleep. I'm not a "panic" type person by any means. Nor am I apt to go to a doctor for no reason. I'm actually more prone to ignore any discomfort, probably not wise as I age. Perhaps the doctor was overtired, dealing with something else, I don't honestly know. What I do know is I felt I was being ridiculed. Sort of: You came in, we ran tests, nothing is wrong with you go home. Very expensive lesson. My question is where do I go from here? My primary takes 2 months to get into, I still have the horrible mucus and will try sleeping sitting up for now. I even worked for St. Charles years ago and this saddens me. read more

Outpatient rehab ; wheelchair clinicians leave their job up to the vendors. Even if they are contacted and told that what they have suggested has not occurred with the vendor the Wheelchair clinicians refuse to do anything. It is despicable that they advocate more for a vendor than a patient. Be careful if you ask them why; they will discriminate against you and you will have to move or seek assistance outside of town. This place is laughable at best. The attitude amongst staff is F you. You will be treated like an inconvenience and bed side manner is non existent. They were rude about giving me an ice pack and didn't even offer a wheelchair even though i was passing out from pain. After spending 30min in an empty waiting room I get to spend 30 min being ignored in the patient room. Still nothing for the pain is offered. After bare minimum help i get told I'm free to go as i can barely put my clothes back on. I honestly hate this place. What a horrible place to be when you're at you're lowest. read more

Charges for services are egregious. If you are in need of care late at night, strongly consider waiting until the morning. Even if you have good health insurance. Got charged for ER services because that's the only available care provided "after hours". Even though no emergency care was provided to me anytime soon. I came in around 2am and waited in a fairly empty waiting room until after 4am until I was seen. Automatic ER charge is $1400 not including charges for services. My son was born from a surrogate at St. Charles. I can't describe how horribly we were treated, but I'll give a short summary. We and our newborn son were put into a converted utility closet in the ICU rather than a room on the birthing floor or nursery "per policy." A folding divider separated "our" side from the spare equipment, and the staff allocated a single chair that we had to share and no supplies. A kind nurse, upset about the hospital's policies, sneaked two pillows into the room for our three-day stay, telling us not to share where we got them or else she would be reprimanded. Our son's birth weight was fairly low, so the doctors put him on a strict feeding schedule. Of course, it was up to my wife and I to care for him and reach out when it was time to feed to obtain supplies, and the extreme delay in having staff bring us milk and bottles meant that we often missed the required feeding time by 30-60 minutes. When it came time for checkups or tests such as the hearing screen, the scheduled time continually came and went with no notice. The doctor or technician would randomly show up hours later (or the next day, in the case of the hearing screen) with a common excuse akin to, "Something important got in the way." Apparently, my son wasn't important. Getting our medical records was a disaster. As the biological parents of a child born in the hospital, it should be straightforward to have the records sent to a local pediatrician. Nope. It took us three days of fighting, and the hospital only released the records when we got our attorney involved and threatened to sue. And if it wasn't bad enough, we're still fighting the billing more than a year later. Even though we have statements and receipts from both our payments as well as the insurance company's payments -- and even though the insurance company has intervened on our behalf -- we are constantly receiving duplicate and/or erroneous bills. Thank goodness for insurance companies fighting for us. While the birth of my son was a monumental moment in my life, St. Charles Medical Center did everything that was legally and morally possible to ruin it. I would never consider returning to the hospital. read more

In December 2022 a tumor was found. I filled out paperwork for financial assistance from February 2022 to help cover cost for surgery since I am seasonal worker. My annual income is low enough to recieve assistance on the paper work attached to the application, yet this is the letter I recieved. This letter made me cry. I recieved letter dated April 2022 telling me I can get 50% 06/22/2021 - 05/30/2022. The date does not make sense since I was trying so hard to get the tumor removed during winter months off from work. I still have the tumor. read more

I'd like to thank the oncology department for ending my husbands life so quickly. He was diagnosed with single cell lung cancer and was terminally ill. When the doctor came into his room and gave us the diagnoses he didn't say lets star chemo he just said but I need to do more testing. For what to give the hospital more money? I cannot adequately express my gratitude for the staff that served me at St. Charles Hospital in Bend, Oregon, during my hospital stay (as a COVID-19 pneumonia patient) October 20th through October 24, 2021. From the moment I entered the doors I was treated kindly and with great respect. It is not an easy thing working on the COVID floor. Just to enter the patient's room, more items of protection are required, making it a lot more of a chore for the nurses, doctors, CNAs, cleaning staff, etc. Each and everyone that served me during that time deserves much praise for their, kind, unselfish service. The ER doctors and nurses are exhausted and are incredibly mean and my dad is dead. In 2018, my dad was a retired doctor. He was brought in to St. Charles, a place he used to work, in an ambulance. He had skin mites, and he had tried dermatologist prescribed meds to kill the mites, but they wouldn't die. He tried another doctor's prescribed meds and the mites didn't die. They lived in his skin. He got scared and desperate, and he overdosed on ivermectin dosed for a horse. St. Charles didn't pump his stomach (it had been 30 mins since he took the Ivermectin). They just put him on a bolus of fluids. My father couldn't remember my mom's name, or what year it was. He called my mom, "Banana head". He was horribly confused and kept ripping his fluid line out, even though he was a doctor and should have known better. But he had so much poison inside of him, he couldn't think. The ER nurse got annoyed and said my father sure seemed to be having a good time. I said, "No, my father is an incredibly serious, intelligent man. This is not like him at all. Something is really wrong." The doctor came in and said my father could go--my father could not even walk. I said, "He can't even walk! Something is wrong, he doesn't act like this. And I'm concerned that maybe he doesn't have skin mites after all, and that he has something else...he's still scratching everywhere after the overdose and he already took what the dermatologist told him to take. What do you think is wrong with him?" The doctor told me it wasn't his job to diagnose my father's skin condition. So I said, "Do you have a dermatologist in house that could look at him? Or some kind of epidemiologist?" And the doctor said, "You can use google and look that up. You need to go now." They kicked us out. My father couldn't walk. He got up in the middle of the night and fell down the stairs because he couldn't walk from the poison still. He wasn't himself anymore. My dad died two weeks later. He never recovered from the damage to his brain. And my dad is dead. I blame St. Charles for my father's death. He was given inferior care, the doctor and nurse wouldn't listen, and he was sent home while he still couldn't remember my mom's or my names or what day it was or what he had taken. He couldn't walk. My mother and I felt he wasn't safe, but St. Charles insisted. He was taken to our car in a wheelchair. And he died. I'm looking into how to take that doctor's license for being cold and unethical. This was around May 25, 2018. Maybe May 24. read more

I was being seen for a possible miscarriage, out-of-state while I was on vacation for my birthday, and their staff was incredibly disrespectful and the least bit comforting during this traumatic time. Biohazard waste on the floor beside their trash bins, unclean bedding. I had no privacy while changing out of my clothes and into my gown- the male doctor opened my door and curtain TWO different times while I was changing my clothes, leaving the whole hallway of staff to see me vulnerable and practically nude. At this time I was getting increasingly nervous, since I could immediately tell that my care/time there was going to be wrong and inadequate- but this location was the closest and sadly the only option. My physical exam and ultrasound experience were poorly done, extremely unprofessional- they would ask me questions like, "Don't you feel a bit young for being pregnant? I'm sure you're relieved with this outcome (the potential loss of my unborn child)" Are you KIDDING me?! "Relieved", no actually. Their staff member did not know how to properly issue the IV and had to ask ME if she "has to tie the rubber band around my arm before or after" ... I really cannot make this up. She eventually got the needle in, but infiltrated my vein causing a severe stinging pain and bruising by the next morning. Staff left this empty bag IV in my arm and for over 3 hours, as nobody came to help me after using the nurse-call button for 30+ minutes. The list goes on and on for this experience, as if it can't get any worse, they also violated HIPAA by telling another person outside of the hospital, what my legal name is and where my hospital room was located. I am outraged that this establishment is still up and running. After my blood results came back it was showing that I had miscarried and that I should follow-up with my care team at home. Horrifying. Heartbreaking. Disappointing. Honestly surprising, at how horrible my experience was at this hospital. Tears were streaming down my face before I finally check out exhausted around 4am, and they have the audacity to coldly say "obviously nobody wants to spend their night like this, but nonetheless Happy Birthday to you" I will never, ever forget that. read more
