I would call this a classic gay dive, with service to match. Does that mean the service and so on is perfect? No. It means this spot has survived and the people who run it have as well, and have a right to keep doing so as they please. They have a variety of drinks, a pool table, funky lighting, and play all the Donna Summers you could ever dream of. What's not to love? If you just expect out of this spot what you expect out of any dive, you'll find a great place to drink when they're open. If they closed down it would be an epic tragedy, give them some slack. read more

Went in with some friends the other night, super dead. The bartender/owner? Commented on my weight (I have lost a lot of weight since I moved back home from living somewhere else), looked at my ID a SUPER long time cuz it was out of state, looked like she would've taken it away. And she stared at my friend's id a long time cuz she was there with her twin sister, and even questioned her! Also not a lot of options, and when I was ready to order, she clearly saw me ready and ignored me, when she wasn't doing anything. I stop at Squiggy's every time I'm in Binghamton. Here's why: With the closure of Merlin's a few years back, there is a dearth of LGBTQ spaces in the Southern Tier. I stumbled upon Squiggy's years after I had moved away from Binghamton, having come back and done a tour of the new downtown. Being far from home, and witnessing how much the Binghamton I had loved had changed, I was looking for a place where I could feel some sort of belonging. I found myself at Squiggy's. I've read other reviews on here that mention some nonsense about the bartender being unfriendly or unwelcoming or cranky. I have trouble giving credence to these stories. Jody remembers me when I come in, she asks about what I've been up to, she listens and shares. At my last visit, Jody held my hand as we told each other our stories of coming out. I have only ever visited Squiggy's alone, but I've never left without making friends. Patrons invite you to sit with them, Jody introduces you to the regulars, and you end up finding yourself at midnight hanging out with really interesting people you wouldn't have otherwise found yourself with. Business doesn't appear to be great-- I've yet to be there when it's "busy"-- but there is no other place in Binghamton where I would feel as safe and accepted as I do when I'm there. In a sociopolitical climate that is increasingly hostile towards the "other", Squiggy's sets itself apart as a place where the "others" belong. No pretense, no judgment, just a great place to be. Support this establishment. A need for belonging will always be there, but places where you can belong are few and far between. read more

My husband and I stopped by Squiggy's for a drink on our last night in Binghamton after our visit to the LUMA art festival. We wanted to end the evening with a drink and wanted to check out the city's gay scene - the internet told us this was the only game in town so we decided to stop by. It ended up being super close to our hotel and walkable. We found the bar to be charming and really cozy. There were a few patrons already at the bar so we pulled up a couple of seats and was greeted promptly by the bartender. He was really friendly and open. We ordered a couple of gin and tonics and settled into our seats. The atmosphere was cozy and intimate. Kind of reminds you of a well kept dive bar - warmly lit, the bar fully stocked with all kinds of fixings for exotic fun drinks, but we stuck to the classic and had another round. We noticed a pool table and what looked like a stage in the back of the bar, but what won our attention was the fancy digital jukebox! The husband and I couldn't resist queuing up our favorite 80s gems with fit in well with the crowd and previous tunes playing when walked in. Better yet, there were already 10 extra credits in the jukebox for us to use so we dumped in a couple of extra ones to pay it forward to the next guests. If you end up using any of them, you're welcome. After our second drinks we called it an evening and left with a pleasant experience. Sure the bar wasn't crowded and we watched a few younger patrons stop in and turn right around probably in search for more fertile feeding grounds, but what I think is being missed is how important spaces like Squiggy's are to small towns like Binghamton even as LGBTQ people are being more and more accepted in other spaces. These bars provided safe spaces for community and for people like my husband and I, places where we can feel safe and belong to. Squiggy's is very much that bar. Well at first I was going to give this place a chance due to it being slow. It seemed to have alot of charm until the drunk owner came up to tell us the bar was closed just for us while the regular drinkers continued to drink. I was rather perplexed by this seeing I I saw online it was a gay friendly bar that accpected all LGBT members but the way she was treating was cold and it really sent a shiver down my spine. I do not recommend this place to anyone LGBT.anyone thats rude should not manage or own a bar. read more

The owner/bartender Jodie should not work in the bar or restaurant business. Or anywhere in public, for that matter. When I was there with my friends last night, she singled me out and was rude, argumentative, and insulting! She also doesn't have the first clue about mixology, because when I ordered a broken cherry shot (amaretto and baileys) she started an argument with me saying that "I was wrong, that shot is called a slippery nipple." um, a slippery nipple is sambuca and baileys. Anyways, she then began asking me a slew of questions ranging from inventory control to the proper way to make a martini. Are you kidding me? I'm your customer, not your bar manager! Then she shoved a bar spoon in my face and asked me if I knew what it was. I was more than insulted especially when she pointed out that she's 64 years old so I clearly " knew nothing about the bar business." seriously? All because I ordered a shot that you were unfamiliar with? It took everything in me to remain polite, which is more than I can say for her. oh, and she also gave my friends hell when they politely asked if she had a band-aid. wtf?? Unless you enjoy being harassed by an ornery, miserable old coot, do not go here. read more

I have no idea why the reviews for this place are so negative! Never had been here before, and decided to stop in after drag night at Merlin's. Owner was very friendly and we had great conversation about the bar business. She even gave me a shot on the house! Definetly will be back with friends. I think it is absolutely hilarious reading the previous reviews about this place. They were extremely negative and I felt the exact opposite. I thought Jodie was absolutely amazing and very welcoming into her bar. I had to drive back to Charleston, SC where I live. She realized it was such a long drive that she actually made me a burger on the house and loaded me up with snack foods for the road. I NEVER have seen that kind of service! I have already passed the word on to my friends down here in Charleston, SC and next time we are in Binghamton, NY we will definitely be visiting Jodie and Squiggys! read more
