The chef here is a true culinary artist! We loved the Southern country cuisine with a twist. Incredible! My husband had the NC Mountain Trout and there wasn't a bite left on his plate! The addition of the crawdad stuffing and the pimento cheese grits, really made the dish. He said it was so fresh and delicious to the last bite. I had the Peach Glazed Flat Iron Pork. My beloved took me here for lunch. It has a superb location downtown but parking may cost you depending on the time of day. We were very thankful for a vegan option. The eggplant dish was stacked like a sandwich without bread, very smart. It was hot, crisp, and very tasty and balanced. We had the most incredible dinner here with absolutely top notch service from Amy (who I'm assuming is the owner or manager). Wondering what to order? Highest praise for the potstickers, tuna nachos (think poke on a crispy wonton) and crispy fried Brussels sprouts with Thai chili sauce. Entrees: guests of all ages will leave happy. Do not miss the scallop saltimbocca over risotto if available as a special. The five spice tuna is a perfect entree: spice rubbed and seared (rare) tuna, thinly sliced and served over coconut rice with bursts of crispy kale. Kids' menu is unpublished but available (grilled chicken, nuggets, burger, corn dog, grilled cheese, PBJ) served with fries or seasonal veggies. Reservations recommended but worth the wait. Don't Order the Duck!! Let me start by saying that Square Root is one of our favorite restaurants in Brevard and I usually love my food. However, I went outside of my comfort zone of dishes and ordered the Crispy Roasted Duck. The menu says 1/2 a duck....this dish is $34.00 so I expected breast meat and maybe a leg. What I received on my plate was 2 legs! The meat was tough and chewy. I guess I got the LOWER HALF of the duck? Very disappointed. The skin was not at all crispy and I had to remove it because it was thick and looked like it had been reheated after roasting. I'm going to stick to my Fig Chicken salad from now on. :-( read more

We began with the pretzel plate appetizer that featured a warm Bavarian pretzel, cheese and meats of salami and ham. The meat and cheese seemed of grocer quality. I would have liked something a little tastier as these were bland. The scallops saltimbocca and the chicken Marsala more than made up for this shortcoming as both were excellent, full of flavor and prepared perfectly. Really excellent dinner choice if you find yourself in Brevard, NC. 5 of us came for a dinner (two had been there several times before). The staff and service were great, very knowledgeable about the menu, and checked on you just the right amount. We started with the pecan crusted brie and calamari. The brie was definitely the standout--melty in the middle and delicious with the Granny Smith apple--though I wish they served it with a different kind of cracker. Entrees also come with a nice side salad (the blue cheese and ranch dressings bothtasted homemade). For the entrees three if us got the mountain trout, one got the pad Thai, and one got the daily special which was bacon wrapped cod with risotto. All of them were fantastic and after all that food most of us had food to take home. I had the trout, it came with nicely cooked pimento cheese grits and some tasty collards. If you aren't a greens person they can substitute them for another veggie. All in all I'd highly recommend stopping in if you are in the area. It's very much worth it! read more

Cool little resstraunt tucked in an alley in Brevard. We visited after the Halloween festival earlier that day. We were pretty hungry and had about a 45 minute wait. There's outdoor and indoor dining. We opted for the indoor. It's pretty cozy inside and not as big as I thought it would be. . Our server was friendly and attentive. We started with the honey buffalo cauliflower and calamari as an appetizer. My friend loved the cauliflower, but I thought it was just okay. It had a sweet batter and then sauced in buffalo sauce with blue cheese on top. I enjoyed the calamari more. It was cooked perfectly and had a light batter with just enough seasoning. We had a spicy marinara type sauce to dip it in which was yummy. For my entree I got the boursin chicken melt sandwich with zucchini fries as suggested by fellow yelpers. The sandwich was good. My only critique is my first bite was very dry. The chicken wasn't as juicy as I expected, but I did like the boursin cheese. The zucchini fries were good, but the chipotle sauce was a game changer. However, I still have favorite zucchini fries somewhere else. Overall a great experience. I'd still like to try some other things on the menu when we visit again. read more

My husband and I loved the fact that we had options to pick from what we wanted- him a sandwich and me some authentic curry. My husband had a grouper sandwich and I had their chicken curry. Really good and authentic chicken curry and rice. It was SO comforting to find good Indian curry in the mountains. The owner grew up in South Africa and learnt the recipe from there, it was authentic and delicious. The sandwich was fresh and the fish was cooked well- crispy on the outside and moist on inside. They had many local beers on tap, the staff were very friendly and recommended us good beer. We will definitely go back here when we visit Brevard again. read more

Square Root in Brevard is one of our favorite places to have lunch! We have had several friends recommend it and finally had the chance to check it out and we are so glad we did! Even at 1:45pm on a Monday afternoon the place is jammin - but it was a nice hum of conversation. We were still able to have our own conversation in a comfortable tone of voice. So, let's get down to the nitty gritty: Service is awesome - friendly and available. From the fabulous hostess Isabella, who took phenomenal care of us and seated us very quickly (quite a surprise, to be frank... the restaurant was packed! We had prepared ourselves for quite the wait!) They take greeting and that first hello very seriously. Our server, Alex, was very friendly and informative. We had a few questions about the menu and she was more than happy to provide input and it helped us to decide. Food: We opted for the Zucchini Sticks which Square Root is known for. Of course, the Chipotle Ranch Sauce that comes with them is the extra star in that crown!! For our entrees we had the Day After Thanksgiving Panini, a fabulous turkey sandwich with extra slices of avocado, which were much appreciated! My dh had the Chicken Curry and loved the flavors - it was mildly spicy, but not overwhelmingly so. Highly enjoyable. We have now eaten at Square Root twice and are looking forward to future visits! I started eating before I took the picture, but it was so good I thought I'd share. We got the Brussels sprouts to start, which I did not take a photo of but I literally dream of them. The brussels were SO good. The eggplant parmesan was amazing, it was filling and yet still light and fresh tasting. It tasted lighter and fresher than most eggplant parms I've tasted, I loved fresh tomatoes and onion on it. Everyone else I was with got options with meat and everyone loved their dishes. We are visiting the Asheville area for our 32nd wedding anniversary, and wanted to have a nice anniversary dinner. The wife happened to find The Square Root in a magazine in our hotel, and we decided to give it a try.... We started out with really good cocktails, a White Russian for me and a Painkiller for her (she's been married to me for 32 years). Really good drinks. For an appetizer we order the Pecan-Crusted Brie - brie coated with a pecan crust, boiled in oil, and sitting in a plate of thinly sliced Granny Smith apples and crackers with a honey-caramel sauce. When we finished the brie/crackers/apples, I was really tempted to sop the sauce with my napkin and suck on it, but there were just too many people in there and I didn't wanna be judged. Salads came next; they were fresh and delicious, not too big and not pretending to be anything they weren't....just a nice, fresh salad. I ordered the 8oz Hanger Steak with the Lyonaise potatoes and red pepper butter - awesome, and the steak was cooked to a perfect medium. Lori ordered the Mountain Trout with crawfish stuffing and lobster sauce, with pimiento grits and greens. The food literally could not have been any better. Service was very good, though the restaurant was really busy. Here's a fun fact - with the cocktails, appetizer, entrees, and a 20% tip, we got out of there under $100.00. I would have expected (and been happy to pay) $125-$135 for the meal that we had. Highly recommend this place if you're in the area. read more

Food was excellent. We did carry out and it was just as hot/good as if we had dined in. These are great prices for the quality of food. I had the trout. It was the only thing I took a picture of. We also had the brie appetizer and my friend had the salmon. Put in your order early though because we had a 50 min wait for our food, which was expected because the place was packed on a Wednesday night. They were spot on though on how long it would take. So our food didn't get cold waiting for us. Carry out packaging was great. The roll was even hidden behind foil so it didn't get soaked with the cream sauce or vinegar from the collard greens. Wow, heard of great reviews on this restaurant. Unfortunately we did not have a great experience. The host/hostess were less than stellar. Skipped our party several times and lost us on the list three times. When we were seated it was a table in an alley way with water dripping on our heads and chairs. We were finally moved from the alley way/dumpster area. The same thing happened to the party behind us. The food was good, our server was good, but the host/hostess and the General Manager need basic training in rudimentary hospitality and people skills.
