Square Root just makes sense. We were so happy to have gotten a table on the patio at Square Root for a lunch in Brevard before we had to leave NC through Asheville to head home. A lot of cafes in and around the greater Asheville area have a similar vibe. Small, hip, no frills, friendly and welcoming. You'll notice all the framed rave reviews on the wall inside and the website boasts its 16 year reign as #1 restaurant in Brevard, and the menu definitely lives up. We started with the Bavarian Pretzel (which was actually recommended to us by the server at the chocolate shop across the alleyway.) It was very much the right way to go. The pretzel is adorned with several meats, slices of cheese, picked veggies (the pickled okra is amazing!) and some dipping sauces. You could come just for this, a few drinks and maybe another app and have a wonderful time! However you'd miss the delicious entrees. I got the Brunswick stew which was heavenly. My son loved his cedar plank salmon, said it was one of this favorite salmon preps he's ever had. The ambiance on the patio was pleasant with the hanging plants. The restaurant feels like a hidden gem as you have to travel one of the side alleys to find it. But locals seem to have no problem finding their award winning fave. If you're visiting town, this restaurant is definitely a winner. Plus there are some great shops to stroll nearby before or after. read more

Square Root was very good; we started with fried green tomatoes with a spicy aoli and a large soft pretzel with dipping sauces, cheeses and sliced meats. For dinner I had the southwest blackened chicken Cobb salad which was very good as well. Prices were a little up there, but not too crazy. Service was a little slow (they were pretty busy at the time we went) but the server was well educated on the menu. He Said: We had intended to get dinner at a nearby brewery, but a cover charge for a band (fair!) discouraged us from hanging out. I called over to the Square Root to check the kitchen timing (it was getting on 8) and all was well. We managed a seat at the bar and this was perfect for us. We chatted a bit with the servers, who were amazing. There is a ton enjoyment for the job and the space going on here. We also met some semi-locals who were awesome. Shout out to "Kendall-Jackson"! The menu is full of local ingredients and plenty of temptations. The specials were even more tempting and we grabbed oysters to kick it off. The pepper/spicy mignonette is so so good. It's just the right mix of classic and new. I didn't need the other sauce, especially with just 6 oysters. I eyed the yellowtail snapper (snapper, right? def not tuna) special, but opted for the Korean chicken sandwich. Quite good! I could have used a stronger flavor from the kimchi and, frankly, less of a mess, but the cook was just right, the flavor profiles were excellent, and the portion was plenty. A really good sandwich! I had the sweet potato chips as my side and I can see why they are popular. We kept the leftover sauces from the oysters just so I could dip my chips. Good call! She Said: I'd like to start by complimenting the fantastic staff. They've obviously been here a while, and they're enthusiastic about this place. He Said covered the oysters (yum!) and the mignonette (double yum!), so I'll focus on the mushroom tart that I got as my meal. I haven't been here in years, but it was just as great as I always remember it being. My tried and true is normally either of the tuna dishes, but I got the trout this time and it blew me away! It has been a while since we have visited Square Root, but an afternoon of errands in Brevard meant we needed to find a place for lunch and so Square Root was the call! We were seated immediately and our server Aedyn came to the table. Aedyn was friendly and answered our questions easily. We decided to go with the Daily Special of a Chicken Boursin Hoagie featuring Arugula and Fig Jam and the Chicken Curry. We also ordered an appetizer of the Wild Mushroom Tart, which had us on the edge of our seats, it smelled so good! (And it was as delicious as it smelled too!) The food is always good and the service has always been good as well as for the ambience. It is a nice restaurant, but I would say most of the ambience has to do with the floor more than anything. I will admit that every time we return and stop in for a bite the prices have increased significantly not sure if that's because of labor food cost or who knows what but many good restaurants to end up going under because they price themselves out of the market, hopefully that won't happen here. Mushroom tart appetizer was delicious. As you would imagine based on ingredients. Would order again. Wine selection not as great as I would want. They were out of the bottle we wanted so we ordered by the glass which limited our selections. That said we loved our meals. Rabbit gumbo and lamb pappardelle were rock solid. The sides really shined. Bacon collards and a roasted beets side that should not be missed. Attentive and friendly service that was also not constantly present. In short, stellar service. Stopped here for an impromptu lunch on a weekday. We were seated right away on the patio because it was a beautiful day. (Both the indoor and outdoor seating are quaint with character). We decided to share a couple of appetizers instead of ordering full entrees or sandwiches. The ahi tuna nachos were delicious, the pork dumplings were very tasty, and teh fried green tomatoes were flavorful (though the breading is quite thick vs. some other place we've had them). This is by far the best restaurant I have been to in years. When we walked in, we were treated like family. I can't recall any business I've ever visited, that truly goes out of their way to make customers feel valued before they even sit down. We decided to sit at the bar and it was a fantastic experience. I had a cranberry margarita to start with and it was amazing. We started with a burrata appetizer with bread, grilled peaches, and a balsamic glaze. It was phenomenal!! Our bartender brought out a sample of the rabbit gumbo and we loved it. We shared the NC trout with pimento cheese grits and I was licking the plate by the end. I can't begin to describe how good everything was. We ended the meal with a beer that tasted like apple pie. Everyone enjoyed their sandwiches, and we liked how they have some different options for your side to go with the sandwich. One person in our group ordered a Southwest-style salad which was supposed to have avocado on it, and there was just one small, thin slice of avocado, but he said the salad was very good. Service was a bit inattentive and we had to flag an employee down a few times when we needed something and our server hadn't been by to check on us. Such a cute place with some local history. We enjoyed dinner tonight and dessert. The drinks were amazing! Brenton was our server and was very attentive and knowledgeable. Ask for him when you come in but I heard the other servers and they were very hospitable too! We tried the fall seasoned beets for appetizer and dessert was the peanut butter pie. Overall, a lackluster experience at $70 a person. The appetizer we ordered never arrived. Our waitress told more about herself than the food and was pushy. The scallops special was $70 and was even missing the small piece of advertised pickled peach on one of the three Scallops. The crispy pork belly was burnt and had inedible skin. You couldn't cut it with a steak knife. We did our best to enjoy the rest of our meal (even with screaming toddlers and a pushy waitress). When I called to let the manager on duty know he manaplained me that I should ask the price of specials next time and that that's how pork belly is cooked. He then explained that he talked to his server and blamed me for my experience. Not all people are meant to be servers. It's one thing to have a bad dish. It's another to be told that that's the way it should be. I'm a local and I would not go back. read more

A Disappointing Take on Wild Boar Ragù and an Underwhelming Meal Overall. Locals and Brevard visitors highly recommend this restaurant as a "must" visit when in the area, but I could have not been more confused as to why I heard such high praises. The atmosphere was pleasant, but unfortunately, the food and service failed to match the setting. From the start, the service felt more like a sales pitch than hospitality. Our waiter persistently pushed the specials, steering us away from menu items we inquired about and instead recommending pricier alternatives--even with cocktails. The upselling was excessive and off-putting. I had high hopes for the wild boar ragù, but the execution fell flat. The tagliatelle was the thinnest I've encountered--so delicate it disintegrated at the slightest touch. Overcooked to the point of mushiness, the texture alone was enough to disappoint. At $39, the dish felt like an afterthought rather than a carefully crafted entrée. The wild boar itself lacked depth, tasting more like an ordinary red sauce with hints of mildly seasoned beef. I left it unfinished. Service missteps continued. When I asked to swap my side for fries, I was told it would be an additional $3.50, which I accepted--but I still expected my original salad. The salad never arrived, yet the fries were charged. A simple mistake, but one that speaks to a lack of attention to detail. As for the appetizers: * The bri was poorly composed--difficult to cut, overly dry, and oddly paired with crackers and thin apple slices. The fried seasoning on the exterior added nothing, making for a confusing and unpleasant bite. * The potstickers were indistinguishable from a frozen supermarket variety--passable but uninspired. * The Brussels sprouts were the highlight--well-executed, but a safe and uncreative choice. * The French fries were surprisingly good, reminiscent of McDonald's in the best way. The Square Root is truly a treasure. The food is wonderful and the service is outstanding. The ambiance is cozy and welcoming. The bar has a good selection of spirits, The bartenders are talented and willing to make sure you get exactly what you want. There is ample public parking within easy walking distance. The parking spaces in the alley that runs in front of the restaurant are mostly reserved. I definitely recommend the Square Root. read more

Hidden in an alley in charming Downtown Brevard is a cafe with flavors ranging from curry to seafood to steak. We started with the duck bacon sweet corn wontons which is one of the best appetizers I have eaten. The wonton shell was fried but still soft. Inside the bacon and corn were held together with cream cheese while chili aioli added another flavor to the exterior. The Caesar salad had a light drizzle of balsamic - a nice addition. I ordered the special salmon lasagna roulade which was excellent. It was filled with 8 ounces of salmon and cheese and topped with a lobster cream sauce. The staff was friendly and attentive and our waiter ensured our glasses did not go empty. I've had much better for less money With that said, their chocolate spoon cake was incredible. I in no way ordered a pimento cheeseburger. The response itself tells you everything you need to know about the place. He could have easily said I'm sorry you had a bad experience, we'll try to do better, but instead blamed me for my lack of accommodating palate. Just to share - I was brought up in the south and pimento cheese is to cheese as tuna salad is to salad; it's not cheese. No matter how you try to rationalize it.
