Wow! All I can say is this ...off the side street GEM is amazing! As a "foodie" this is at the top of my expectations and experiences! First impression.. Clean and funky, cool place! Our hostess Emily was incredible, friendly and smiling! she made some great appetizer recommendations, and she described things to a T! The service was top notch by Rajh(sp?) and met Chef Adam and Shawn and with the other kitchen staff they do an amazing presentation and full of flavor explosions! This place is a well oiled machine, !!! Love beautifully presented and well thought out dishes! Very current and innovative! The food is gorgeous and delicious! We found this little gem while exploring Bervard! Decided to have lunch here and I'm glad we did. The food was very delicious and good portion size. We enjoyed our time here and tried some local beer. The chicken curry was very good, on the spicy side, highly recommended. This is a fun place with pretty good food. It's the extreme lack of a customer orientation that disappoints me. I asked for a reservation for nine. It was a celebration for my mom's 90th birthday with her live in mate, 95 yr old Bob aka Superman. They are both seen walking in downtown all the time. She is called the Hat Lady! I even offered to show up at 5:30 so we would be the first seating. He said NO! Told him we were going to drink. He could have had a big tab from us but he opted to stick to his poor customer centered focus. We went to Big Mike's as they readily agreed to the reservation. Smart business man! This should be the best review I've written on YELP because dinner here was perfect in every way. From entering the door you treated as a guest. Everyone is friendly, helpful and appear to love their jobs! (Now that's a big one!) They have daily specials on the board. (Appetizer- cocktail- entree and dessert) The menu items were "unique" not typical. We had - NC trout stuffed with crawfish with pimento cheese grits and collards. Peach Glazed Pork Flat Iron Grilled 9oz Pork Flat Iron, topped with Moonshine Grilled Peaches. Served with House Made Sweet Potato Gnocchi, Bacon Braised Collard Greens and Garnished with Boiled Peanuts. This was the best pork I have ever eaten. Moist, juicy and melt in your mouth tender. (Like a great steak). The spices were spot and what could be better than moonshine grilled peach? I couldn't get enough of the Sweet Potato Gnocchi. The collard greens were excellent but on the Spicy side. It was my birthday so the manager sent me a complimentary Key Lime Pie. This meal was like reading the best book- a page turner you can't get enough of until you're almost finished then you just savor every page not wanting it to end. read more

Was in town for the first time and was amazed by the quality of food and staff here! I started with the wok fried Brussel Sprouts (highly recommend!), and for the entree I had the Five Spice Tuna which was great Ahi Tuna and the glaze was divine! For dessert went with the pineapple sorbet and was pleasantly surprised with how much flavor it had. I came with three friends and they thoroughly enjoyed the mushroom burger, mountain trout, and peach glazed pork flat iron. Our waitress (didn't grab her name) was attentive despite the large dinner rush, and the other staff was great with following up with us as well. Highly Recommend!! We really enjoyed having dinner at this restaurant. There is indoor seating as well as seating outdoors under a covered patio. It's hidden in an alley, but GPS will help you find it. They don't take reservations, so you'll put your name in to be texted when your table is ready. We had the NC Mountain Trout and the London Broil sandwich. Both were fantastic. This place was very impressive. Our server was Wilson and he was very knowledgeable. I got the soup to start (similar to a zuppa Toscana, but WAY better) and it was phenomenal. The the special was a prime rib sandwich so I got that with the Mac n cheese. All was delish! My dad got the tuna tatami salad and the tuna was nice and fresh w great flavor. The only reason this did not get 5 stars was the hostess. I specifically asked her for more horseradish sauce for my sandwich since my server was busy getting drinks for a large party and I did not want the sandwich to get cold. She responded "I'll tell your server you need something" and then after 10 minutes did not bother to tell the server. Maybe some coaching would be in order for this as it is super simple to ask another server or the kitchen for a ramekin of horseradish vs letting my food get cold while I wait! read more

My Bride and I discovered this place a few years ago and has become a regular Go-To when up around Pisgah National Forest. The decor is what you would expect in Brevard. The Wooden Bar gorgeous and the floor is a cross section of 6x6 wooden beams. There are some good photos in the picture section. You'll find the Square Root down an alley. There is outdoor seating and they are dog friendly. (outside of course) The Menu reflects a very creative Chef. For the most part we have eaten lunch or Sunday Brunch. We recently had the opportunity to eat dinner here. I had the T-Bone Special and my Bride had the Hanger Steak. Both dishes were very good. Square Root carries a good selection of local craft beers as well as a full bar. If you are in the area, it's well worth the trip. read more

My boyfriend is gluten free and was happily surprised to find that nearly everything on the menu could be made gluten free. He had the trout special, I had the chicken Marsala. Both were wonderful. Fried deviled eggs were incredible. Fried eggplant and grilled shrimp appetizer also very good. Main course blackened mahi mahi was a thick filet cooked perfectly with fruit compote over rice. That tiny diced fruit made an ordinary fish dinner extraordinary. I don't normally take a chance on fish but so glad I tried this one. Great tasting meal,sides and appetizers. Reservation set in advance and he had called here to give them updated numbers - 8 people in party and how some to arrive late since surprise. They were very accommodating, so great service though we had to help separate the table and slide down since they didn't adjust to revised number (whoever took the message didn't communicate?) Went to brunch a couple weeks back after a hike in PNF...service was great but food was haphazardly thrown together in my opinion. The chicken & waffles were so sad...both components of the dish looked like they were reheated from the frozen food section. Had a manager stopped by I would have mentioned it to them direct. The patio seating was great and we will be back as I've had some really great meals here in the past along with understanding everyone has an off day. Maybe the best kitchen staff members all take Sunday brunch off but I hope management will take a hard look at the brunch menu and start placing a much higher priority on quality coming out of the kitchen being served to guests. If you are going to sell fried chicken in the south it must be drastically improved to make the cut! Thankfully, The Square Root had Seating for 4 without reservations on a rainy Friday night. The Bavarian Pretzle Board is a fun appetizer to share with close friends and family. Our fav place to eat in Brevard. Started off with a very good cheddar broccoli soup, which hit the spot. But the Rainbow trout with crawfish stuffing was even better. My wife got the cedar plank salmon, which was also good, but we both agreed the trout was the way to go. Very good service and love the atmosphere. Excellent gem! We were so pleasantly surprised by Square Root. It was hopping on a Saturday night and we were hungry so we sat at the bar for cocktails and dinner. The charcuterie / pretzel board was out of this world (better than the pretzel at The Grand Bohemian in Asheville, better than the charcuterie board at the Grove Park Inn!) The cocktails were delicious and they had tons of excellent local Brevard Brewing beers on tap. I had the trout (excellent) and my husband had the rabbit gumbo and both were outstanding. Truly a 5-star restaurant! We ate lunch there this past week and it was the best meal we have had in ages. The restaurant is located on an alley (a clean one!) so we chose to eat outside...very pleasant and comfortable. I ordered the Five Spice Seared Tuna entree. It was perfect! cooked (rare) served over creamy coconut rice, topped with crunchy potato sticks and kale. The topping had a slight sweetness to it which complimented the tuna perfectly. My husband got the pork flatiron, which was topped with a grilled peach half glazed and served with sweet potato gnocchis and collard greens! A couple of boiled peanuts garnished the dish :) It was also excellent! The side salad, which came with the entrees was good, we both chose the house salad and the mandarin vinaigrette, which was very tasty... not sweet at all. Then dessert... we ordered the berry sorbet... made with mixed berries, very refreshing, garnished with a little basil! A generous serving that 2 could share. AND we ordered the carrot cake. This was the best restaurant carrot cake I have ever had. To start with, the size of the cake serving was not ridiculous; the cake was moist and the cream cheese frosting was perfect.. it was fresh!! Fresh not artificial or pasty at all! The prices are very reasonable and the service impeccable. Our server was Gabriel. He was polite, helpful, and appropriately attentive. We are not gluten intolerant but found out that the restaurant is very accommodating if you require a gluten-free meal. An outstanding meal in a relaxing setting! The food was excellent! The Brie fried in a pecan crust was very good! We had the burgers for dinner and no dessert. Our waiter was not attentive, our beers were almost warm when they were served and we sat for what seemed forever for our ticket.
