I told my girlfriend I'd take care of getting an air conditioner set up in her apartment. Three hours later, I realized: (1) the holes in her window were in the wrong place for this A/C unit; (2) the bracket outside her window was the wrong size; (3) I didn't know what the heck I was doing given 1 & 2. Enter Lorenzo, who answered my call at 5 on a Friday (after I'd called through a bunch of other folks). He was at her apartment in 60 minutes, having sent me to the hardware store for the right bracket in the interim. I spent 20 min or so walking him through the things and he said he'd email me an estimate. I never heard back. I followed up to says "awaiting your estimate" he sent back a non-estimate (telling me his hourly rate which i already knew). I told him, again, to email me an estimate. He asked for clarification on which tasks i wanted done. I sent him those never heard back. Not sure what happened -- maybe my business isn't wanted? I hired Lorenzo to assemble some Elfa pull out cabinet drawers and other odds and ends in an apartment my daughter had just moved into on the UWS. While Lorenzo was very nice and willing to do things like come to my hotel and help me move some things from the hotel to the new apartment...and he went back to the hotel later to pick up something we had forgotten... Not many people would be so accommodating. I paid him for this, of course, but I thought he was nice to help me with whatever I needed. And he seemed completely trustworthy as well. However I was extremely annoyed with Lorenzo once he was in the apartment working. He was on the phone constantly. He answered his cell phone and took up my time on my dime to discuss future jobs, without any regard for the way he was handling my job. Consequently it took him MUCH longer to assemble the shelving because he kept getting interrupted. He also took many calls outside of the apartment. I might recommend Lorenzo if I knew he would leave his cell phone off and give you his full attention, but he did not seem amenable to that. I dropped very unsubtle hints about his preoccupation with his cell phone, but he just replied, "well, I have to make appointments for future business." I replied that when I called to hire him, I had to leave a message and wait for his return call. read more

I hired Lorenzo to install some custom made curtains in my apartment and could not be happier with my experience. Since the curtains did not come with any sort of directions or hanging hardware Lorenzo had to designed the mounting system himself - not an easy task given the space (concrete) and complexity of the custom curtains. Lorenzo was easy to schedule and when we realized that some special tools were going to be needed he was able to return first thing the following day! The final work looks beautiful! There are very few people I look forward to seeing at 9am on a rainy Saturday. Lorenzo is one of them. He showed up on two days' notice (and texted me the night before to confirm our appointment, which I loved) to unfamiliar territory in Brooklyn. Removed sliding doors from my one closet so I could have more usable space (and removed the metal track without me asking so that the naked closet looked finished) and installed glass shelving in my bathroom. He's a perfectionist and I so appreciate his advice not to install a removable shower head, because there's no way I would have been able to reach the obscenely high shower head to pull it down each day. Lorenzo is great to work with and really helpful. I scheduled an installation of two A/Cs: one window, one wall. He arrived earlier than our scheduled time and helped me acquire the right materials for the install. The install of the window unit itself was done in a timely, efficient, and clean fashion. The wall unit was a bit tougher (unit was too small for the case; my fault, not his) and he was candid in suggesting I don't install it without looking into other AC options or getting creative with filling the gaps. The best thing I can say about Lorenzo is that he'll be honest with you and suggest the right thing to do, rather than just "getting the job done." Hired Lorenzo to install some Ikea wall shelves, a curtain rod, and hook rack. He showed up a bit early and got right to work. He had the appropriate screws and anchors for the shelves I had and he actually showed me how to install them myself. He was done with all the work in about an hour and a half. He was also very professional, friendly, considerate, and cleaned up the dry wall dust. I usually like to do basic home improvement jobs like these myself, but being new to NYC with only a hammer, screwdriver, and wrench in my toolkit, I sort of grudgingly acknowledged that I'd need a handyman. After reading all the positive reviews, I decided to give Lorenzo a call to see if he could remove my huge AC unit and install my new portable one. The good news is, he arrived right on schedule, and using his cadre of tools, proceeded to remove my huge AC from the window. That's the good news. The bad news was, we discovered that after years of condensation from my AC, the wall and ledge had extensive damage, so Lorenzo could not install my new unit. He did however explain what I needed to get the job done in the near future. As a cynical New Yorker (isn't that, after all, a prerequisite for living here?) Having recently moved to NYC, I was not quite clear on the support bracket requirements for window A/C units. While I consider myself fairly handy around the "house", my attempt at installing a bracket ended up with the A/C unit being 1.5 inches above the bottom of the window frame (I'm in a 1920s apartment building, and the sills are too deep for the standard brackets to be installed in their "typical" condition). About 1hr after calling, Lorenzo was at my apartment and hard at work. Within 20-30 minutes, he and I had it installed properly and securely. For $65 dollars, this was well worth the hassle of trying to figure it out and potentially endangering anyone in the courtyard below. Should I have any more "handyman" situations that go beyond my basic level of expertise, I will turn to Lorenzo and Sprucing up NYC again. read more

Lorenzo is AWESOME! I can not recommend Lorenzo enough! I bought a 14000 BTU air conditioner and when I went to install it, realized I didn't have the tools to do the job safely and properly. Based off of his stellar reviews on the site, I contacted him and he agreed to come out the next morning so that he could accommodate my schedule. The next day, he texted me to let me know that he got an early start to his day and was outside my building and to just let him know when I was ready for him. What handyman shows up EARLY?!?! When he came up and started the job, he was thorough, clean (put down a drop cloth) and professional the entire time. The air conditioner was installed quickly and safely and I had full confidence in his work. When the job was done, I paid him the price he had quoted me (which was VERY reasonable and lower than I was expecting to pay) and he sent me a paid invoice via email about an hour later. Contacted this handy man with a request to install a drapery rod in concrete ceiling. He said no problem. Went back and forth trying to schedule a time. Finally found a convenient time, and reminded him that it was a concrete ceiling and to not forget to bring a hammer drill. He replied that he would have to look through his tool box and see what he had, and then said that I would have to reimburse him for drill bits. I balked at this and got a snarky message in reply with the comment "Sorry, I'm out." We're going to hire Lorenzo a lot over the next few weeks. Like, A LOT. That's because we're moving into a new apartment, and we really suck at basic home improvement things. So I thought that maybe I should wait to write this review until after Lorenzo has finished the 100 things we have planned for him to do in this apartment. But I just can't wait. Lorenzo is that damn good. He deserves this five star review right away. He's friendly, professional, responsible, knowledgeable, and does a fantastic job. So far, we've hired him to install a potrack and a paper towel holder in our kitchen. He was incredibly careful to make sure that our potrack was safely screwed into our pre-war apartment wall. He used the same great attention to detail when he installed our paper towel holder. But on top of all that, there were two things about Lorenzo that especially stood out. First, he likes cats. How awesome is that? He's an animal lover! Second, while he was kneeling down to get some tools out of his bag, I happened to notice the bottom of his sneakers. They were absolutely spotless.
