I had a great experience with Andrew from start to finish. After going through Yelp to get a quote for installing a tile back-splash in my kitchen, he was very responsive in setting up an appointment for a walk-through and an estimate. His estimate was reasonable for the amount of work to be done and very competitive with estimates I had already received from five other contractors. Andrew and his assistant Matt took about two days to transform my kitchen into something really sharp. Andrew was very thorough and even took care of some odds and ends that were left by the builder (and previous contractor who installed the counter top). Also, Andrew was very neat - he covered the counter top to avoid any damage or stains and swept the floor after both days of working. After they left, you would never know that two people were sawing tiles and working with grout and tile adhesive all day. I wouldn't hesitate to book Andrew for any other jobs I need done around the apartment. It was a five-star experience from start to finish and I'm glad I found the Handy Andy Squad. read more

the afternoon before the job was to start, I texted and emailed andrew asking if I he would meet me in front of the building at 9 am, so I can take him/workers in through the basement per building regulations and let him into apt. no response to either. 5 minutes prior starting a job in the village, I get a text saying he's in traffic on the williamsburg bridge. 1 1/2 hours later another text about police activity.......and then radio silence. he never calls back. he must still be on the bridge! full disclosure: I work with contractors all the time and have worked with andrew before. told him specifically I needed someone reliable. good luck getting him to show up. hope that he didn't agree to 5 other jobs and decided to work on someone else's project that day. read more

The only professional thing about Andy was a detailed proposal. Anything beyond that fits the category of incompetence, unreliability, mediocrity and unprofessionalism. The day Andy and his crew were supposed to do the work, only Andy showed up... 2 hours late but eager to collect his cash deposit. Andy alone was not going to be able to finish the job as agreed. However, he said he would finish the painting portion of the job and would be back the next day to finish the rest. When I went back to check his progress he was wrapping up without the work being completed. Additionally he stated that it was doubtful that he could make it back on Friday even though he stated that he would be available on Friday before my money touched his hands. We agreed we speak early Friday about him coming back that afternoon or Saturday. I called him Friday morning a few times to no avail. I found Andy's work quality to be amateurish and negligent: he didn't cover my wood floor while painting! Just the day before I had my entire floor remodeled. When Andy arrived my floor was in top condition... spotless and free of ANY imperfections. Andy was the only person inside my apartment that day. I uploaded photos where Andy carelessly dripped paint on several areas of my new floor! He also stepped into one of the paint drops and dragged it with his shoes along his work area. To make matters worse he tried to clean it up with diluting agent and by doing so he damaged the floor varnish. Not only were the paint drops still visible, you could also clearly see where he went with a diluting agent along the floor trying to take them off. Therefore, a substantial area of the floor was damaged and I had to pay the company that remodeled the floor to clean up Andy's mess (see photos). Because of what happened to my floor and Andy's unavailability over the weekend, I hired someone else for the paint job. Also, I simply didn't trust Andy to be capable of painting the walls without substantially damaging my floor. I left Andy the wallpaper part of the job because I already paid him the deposit (for wallpaper and painting). When he finally showed up again to complete his job (almost one week later and one hour too late) I explained the situation with the floor. He claimed that it couldn't have been him - even though he also knew that he was the ONLY person in my apartment after the floor got done. I stressed to him how important it was to me that my entire floor is covered while work is in progress and stepped out to make some phone calls. When I got back the floor was NOT covered at all in the work areas. Worse, he was again wrapping up his work stating that he plastered the uneven areas of the walls to prep them for wall papering but was not prepared to install the wallpaper even though he agreed a few days earlier to finish the job in its entirety that day. My girlfriend, who came in with me, repeatedly asked Andy to cover the floor. His response was that there was no need to cover the floor because he was only fixing up the walls with plastering paste - with said paste on the uncovered floor around the areas where he plastered. Andy then took a sponge and smeared it across the floor trying to clean it up. When my girlfriend confronted him again about covering the floor he threw her an arrogant attitude that he knows what he is doing and she shouldn't be telling him anything. I guess Andy doesn't take criticism too well because he packed up his stuff and left... claiming that he would be back the next morning at 9 am to finish installing wallpaper. After inspecting his work from that day I discovered damage to my freshly painted walls (see photos). He smeared his plastering paste for the wallpaper walls on the adjacent newly painted walls and also left marks from the tool he used to smoothen the plastering paste. Instead of showing up on agreed time the next morning, he didn't respond to any of my calls and text message. Only after I told him that he is fired and that there would be a Yelp review did he responded very quickly... with a tirade of unhinged text messages: 1. Andy informed me that he RECORDS all conversations with his clients - unknown to the client (see photos of Andy's text messages). While this is not illegal in NY, I find it a highly questionable practice. 2. Andy threatened me with his lawyer if I post a negative review of him on Yelp! 3. Andy's offer to pay me money back for the unfinished work was the same empty promise like completing the job on agreed date... my text as to how much the refund would be and when I could expect to receive it went unanswered. In conclusion: Andy is an incompetent amateur and incapable of delivering high-quality craftsmanship with attention to details. If price is your concern, do yourself a favor and spend a few bucks more. It will save you a lot of headache. With so many true professionals in NYC, there is no need to hire a crook like Andy! read more

Andrew was very flexible with my time when he came to assess the project. He was friendly and sociable. However, he never showed up to work on the project on the agreed date. (I realize this is just echoing what some of the other reviewers have mentioned.) After waiting the whole day, I called "Alex Can Help," at 8PM. Andrew and Matt are skilled, thoughtful and extremely professional contractors. We had to have our shower floor tile redone as well as an impossible (to us) to reach light fixture replaced and he also fixed the front steps to our building. They took the time to go over our design plan and helped guide us to choosing a beautiful tile that would function best. Andrew takes the time to show you every step of what he's doing and he explains all of the options clearly. He is fearless yet safe when it comes to very tall ladders and his care for our house was really above and beyond. He covered every area with protection and left the workspace spotless every time. On top of all of that, Andrew and Matt are kind and funny and make you comfortable instantly. I know looking for a contractor in New York City is one of the most harrowing tasks to set out on but these guys make it easy. Andy has been doing work for me for a little over 1 year. The first project was to construct a wall and add a door and transom for a new closet. The second was to expand two closets by removing the existing wall and creating a new one with two new doors. The latest project which lasted 3 weeks required patching many large holes, priming and painting and installing new baseboards and crown molding throughout my 1800 sq. ft. apartment. I had just installed a whole new heating system-boiler, piping and radiators. He and his crew did an outstanding job. They are all professional and very easy to deal with. When the job required, Andy brought in an extra painting crew to expedite the work. He also installed 2 medicine cabinets and a new bathroom closet door system. Andy likes a challenge and enjoys his work. He also has an excellent design sense. He does not nickel and dime you by adding additional charges for unexpectedly difficult situations. Our landlord hired him to install a new kitchen countertop after a leak inside the kitchen wall. He came to measure but after that we couldn't get in touch with him. He didn't answer email, text or phone call. Eventually he showed up, at not the best time, and installed the countertop. We didn't notice until he'd left that he had neglected to seal the sink to the countertop. He was also supposed to clean and paint inside the cabinets and there was rust seeping through the one coat of paint an hour after he left. We haven't heard from him again to complete/ fix the job. Andrew from Handy Andy Squad is a true professional, and after closer study of the specs of the installation, he stated that he may be able to accommodate my budget! Come on who does that? He and his company get 2 thumbs up from me because only true professional does that! If we do have the opportunity to work together, there will just be another update. At this rate, I expect only the best things! Handy Andy Squad's response time was good. However, their pricing is a bit exorbitant and, perhaps, a bit unreasonable given a simple closet door installation. However, the professional, respectful and polite manner of communication demonstrated that this company understands customer service. And at the very least they service other boroughs not just Manhattan or Brooklyn like some on Yelp.Com. So Bravo to that! read more

From start to finish, Andy and Matt were exceptional. We had a leak in our apt and Andy came over the next day and reviewed the damage and quickly supplied me with a proposal. The proposal was detailed, specific and fairly priced - I had 3 others to compare it too. The work was organized, professional and done with care. Andrew seemed like an up right guy after he talked to me on the phone and assured me he doesn't "screw anyone over" we narrowed down a time for job to repair my door and I was relieved. The morning he planned to arrive I hadn't heard from him so I gave him a call. He apologized and asked if I was available right then. Andy helped us out of a big jam. We had hired another contractor to put up crown molding in our apartment who in short was terrible. We called Andy on a Friday night with our apartment turned inside out and the crown molding laying in a pile in our living room. Andy came the next day to give us a very reasonable estimate and he started the work that Monday. The job turned out to be harder than anticipated because we live in an old building and the walls aren't exactly straight. However, Andy did not change his estimate and did a phenomenal job. He also went above and beyond hanging a coat rack on our wall and fixed our buzzer that had become loose all for no extra charge.
