I'm pretty sure I can hang a TV. It would probably take me 2 hours, I would make a lot of marks, a few unnecessary holes, and pretty much leave the level glued to the wall. ...But I make no guarantees on just how long the TV will actually stay ON the wall. In the spirit of not destroying my TV and/or the wall in the condo I am renting, I figured I would hire someone to do it. Best Buy normally charges a gargantuan sum of $250 for this, and I had very little confidence in the Geek Squad of the Jersey City Best Buy, given the amount of sighing and loud gum chewing that was going on at that end of the phone call. Cue: Yelp. Took me about 43 seconds to find and decide on Porter Stable, and I was right to make such a quick decision. Michael was quick to reply, and came to Hoboken on my schedule (after work & the gym, 7:30pm). Not the ideal time to travel the Lincoln or the Holland, so I really did appreciate it. We recently moved into a rental 3 bedroom house in Astoria and Porter Stable painted the house for us. When we first did a walkthrough with Michael he gave us a quote for the price but once they started the work turned out to be much more than any of us anticipated. Despite needing a week more to finish the job due to cracks in the walls and structural issues, Michael said he would only charge us extra if our landlord was willing to reimburse us. When our landlord only agreed to reimburse us a small amount Michael only charged us that extra amount despite the work being much more than the amount he charged. So suffice to say, it was very easy to work with Michael. That speaks to his flexibility and generosity but the actual work was top-notch as well. Our house had cracks and flaws everywhere and now visitors rave about how great our place looks. I'll attach before and after pictures to show the dramatic difference but they did a great job! First let me start with the positives: Michael answered on my first call, agreed to come install my window treatments the next day, and gave me an update via text the day of when he was on his way. Unfortunately I wasn't overly impressed with his skills or efficiency. He was hanging window treatments in two windows and I was assisting. He drilled 12 holes through a metal facing, which took him 80 minutes because he had to go to his car for a ladder and he didn't have drill bits specific metal (which I know they sell because I used to work at a hardware store). 80 minutes and $110 to drill 12 holes with me helping didn't seem that impressive. I am now based in CA and was selling my NYC apartment (sniff) The new buyer had requested the removal of AC units and so we scheduled removal before closing *just in case* we would need to keep them. Well, of course one of the AC units that had been there since creation would not come out, so the movers had to remove the window sill and quite a bit of paint leaving it looking less than desirable and damaging the window so it wouldn't shut. This was Sunday and the walk-through and closing was Monday afternoon -- eep! Luckily, my former tenant referred Michael (and based on his Yelp reviews I can see why!) I messaged him and even though it was his off day, he messaged back shortly thereafter that he would get over there to try and fix the problem and at a minimum, give me a quote that I could present the buyer with. He also gave me his cell and told me to text him so he could respond faster. Michael was able to fix the window and give an incredibly reasonable quote for the rest of the work. Calling Porter a life saver doesn't even cut the cake. I, like many young, non-handy females in the city, had an absolute meltdown the other day when I decided to try and give my room some new "feng shui" and move my bed around only to break to the wood base board. I sat on my bed and immediately sunk to the bottom. I realized either the 20 pounds of 16 handles I had the day earlier had finally caught up with me or I had broken something in my bed. I frantically called my parents who live on the west coast (cause that makes a lot of sense, right?) trying to find someway to either a) fix the situation over the phone for me or b) find a way to blame someone else for my ridiculous mistake (definitely the most adult approach). "Hi, ummmmm my names Melissa and I just broke my bed.... HELP!" He called me back within a half and hour and asked me to shoot over some pictures so he could assess the situation. I had a nightmare contractor who managed to botch all of my business space renovation over a holiday weekend and Porter Stable came to the rescue! I worked with Michael and his team to transform my quirky West Village loft from a man cave into a pretty, feminine domain. One of the best things about Michael is his responsiveness. I don't think I waited more than 2 minutes for a response from him. Text, email, phone, in-person, you name it--he was instantly at the ready. I hired him to paint my place for 3 reasons: A. The reviews on Yelp. B. He had a great vibe. C. His estimate was very reasonable. He recommended some amazing paint (Farrow & Ball) and his crew worked for a week straight sanding and patching my ridiculously wavy walls. It was no easy task, and they were even willing to work on the weekend. Full disclosure, I'm picky as hell, so it when it came down to being satisfied I requested several touch-ups several times. To be fair, achieving precise lines with dark gray paint in a pre-war bathroom is a huge pain in the ass, but I was hoping for a more "linear" finish. Regardless, Michael's, "It's not over 'til you're happy" philosophy was greatly appreciated. In the end, my apartment truly is transformed and when I look at the before pictures, I'm amazed at what a dramatic difference his team made (stay tuned for pics). I had bought a movie/TV projector from a restaurant auction but, upon returning home, realized I was haveing a "Now what? " moment - where does it go? How do I mount it?
