This is a wonderful small business in Hyde Park. They carry a good selection of high-quality dog and cat foods and will happily special-order foods for you if they don't have it in stock (I did this for a number of years for my cat with special dietary needs). They also have really cool natural treats, like pig ears and similar pet chews, toys and other stuff. If you feed raw, this should be your go-to. The owner is super sweet and helpful and organizes doggy social days from time to time, and she also fosters kitties from Hyde Park Cats, so you might get lucky and pet an adorable kitty up for adoption. read more

I admit I only frequented this place when Parker's closed, but I like how 'cozy' it is and how friendly and helpful the staff is. They are rather out of the way for me, even via bus, but they do deliver (but at times it is faster/more convenient to just go there). Due to their size they don't have everything we need for our cat, but they have stuff that the BIG stores don't tend to have: dried meat sold individually, Primal Raw freeze-dried, and Dave's Naturally. This is ideal for fur parents with picky 'children' (and much moolah) who don't want to settle for mainstream, high-preservative pet food. The personal service is a great touch, they have good memories of their customers, and they have been very helpful with us while we tend to our kitty's IBD. If they had slightly longer hours they'd be perfect, but it is what it is. read more

They will deliver if you give them enough time, which is very helpful. It may be "cozy" but big enough it find what you may need. I went to Kiser's downtown, generally a good store if a bit pricey-- looking for a couple RC Pets dog coats they stock. They were unusually unhelpful and couldn't even order one for me in the sizes I required.....though the online person at RC told me I had to order through their vendors. I got enough of a brush-off (the gal behind the counter couldn't answer any of my questions on their products .....m'kay, some training in order-- So it was back to lovely Sprocket and Stone. Not only did they have a better selection of coats, but the well-informed gal behind the counter (not the owner but equally impressive) was able to find one coat in my size--AND show me an online vendor who could furnish me with another. Spot on service, that, when they're not gonna make a dime off that exchange. I also asked the same queries I had at Kriser's re: a NZ product line, and was given a well-ordered précis on the brand. Left with that, some fermented goat's mild for Bennie's tummy, some duck feet and a bag of our Orijen for Seniors--which both my Bostons love. I've been a customer since the store first opened, before Parker's closed. Parker's was great, but I like that Sprocket & Stone is easy to get to and get in and out of; street parking is never an issue. Though compact, the store offers an array of products. And, Sophie always offers to order an item if I'm looking for something that she doesn't normally carry. Sophie is an excellent proprietor who knows her customers, their pets, and her products. From the beginning, she asked questions about my Basenji - age, how long we'd had him, reason for our food choice, etc., and she's always answered my questions with honesty and ease. (I've seen the same interactions with other customers.) As a result, she knows that when we adopted our B-boy, he'd had a long-term undiagnosed bacterial infection that once cured left him to have a very sensitive digestive tract. She knows that we'd spent months searching for a brand that he could eat without issue. Sophie now ensures that she always has the food in stock. Even brought it to our home once when we'd gone in for it and her delivery was late! I'm a big fan of buying local and supporting my community whenever possible, but I'm not willing to sacrifice quality of service for it. Hooray! The South Side finally has an indie pet store after Parker Pets closed its doors. The owner, Sophie, and her coworker are so very knowledgeable and helpful, even offering to bring out their two foster cats. Though the shop is teeeeeeeeeny, it is very well stocked and has always had what i came in for. Furthermore, they make an effort to let the community know they are present by sending Evites of anniversary parties, or to showcase a new product. Great selection of raw dog friendly treats and snacks! Not as pricey as Parker's and not as much selection, but the space is smaller. Obviously we love supporting local businesses so we will be back and invest more money in our lab (which my boyfriend absolutely hates). What a great store! I brought the pup in to try out some new treats because she's fussy about food and refused the eat the ones I'd bought her. They listened to what I said about the pup's likes/ dislikes and let her try a few different treats (even opening some packages to do so!). She didn't end up liking any of the ones she tried, but we did leave the store with a bag of treats that they suggested and it turns out she LOVED them. They even gave me a freeze-dried chicken neck for pup to chew on. Really great store with a wonderful selection, and of course excellent service. I'll definitely be back! read more

I went to Sprocket & Stone to buy some necessities for a dog. My mother has a pet dog and I just wanted to buy something for it to make my mother happy. I came to the store and I found the owner and her employee who are very nice and friendly. I told them that I am not familiar with those things for dogs and they gladly helped me with it. The store is pretty clean and there were a lot of items and a lot of selections of pet foods, treats and even toys. I am glad that the owner is very knowledgeable about the products and she explains everything to me while helping me choose and also recommending healthy foods for a dog. I bought everything that I think is good based on what I learned from her. The prices are fair and reasonable even if I bought a lot. I had a great experience in this pet store and I will definitely come back. Highly recommended for those who want healthy foods and nice toys for their pets and I also learned that they accept delivery for free which is a good thing. read more

Great Experiences! This store is just one example as to why shopping local is so important. In the past I would purchase supplies and toys for my bully from the big box online stores. I am a first time dog owner so I thought it was as easy as buying anything else. I was reading online about a certain dog food that came highly recommended by fellow owners and vets alike so I did an online search to find it. I searched on Chewy as well as Amazon and it was nowhere to be found. I then contacted the company itself to see why it wasn't available through these online stores. To paraphrase, they said that they see a greater benefit to the dog owners to provide their products at local smaller stores and they recommend that I do a search via their website for who sells it locally. I did, and sure enough Sprocket and Stone popped up. I'd been to S&S previously on a few occasions and really liked what I saw and enjoyed the service but when I'm in my "overly busy mode" I found it easier to just click a few times and have whatever product at my doorstep in a couple days. I rushed over to the store to pick up the dog food and grabbed the big 25 lbs. bag. I brought it over to the counter and Sophie (owner) asked me how much my dog weighed. I told her his weight and to my surprise she told me that I was buying too large of a bag and that the food would go bad if I purchased this much food while feeding him his daily recommended amount. I was taken aback and was incredibly grateful for her advice, on top of that she was having a "Pet Owners Appreciation Day" and handed me a gift bag with a whole bunch of treats for my dog. I really appreciated the advice, honesty and service. This experience taught me the importance of shopping local and how face to face engagements most often lead to a better outcome. Hands down, my favorite place to get food, treats etc for my furry brood. The best part about this place is the owner, Sophie, pays particular attention to the type of food she sells...in other words, no junk! Sprocket and Stone is the Whole Foods for pets. She's very knowledgeable and can tell you what shouldn't be in your pets food, hence, low vet bills. She will even special order something for you if she doesn't happen to carry it...how many places do that? I happen to notice a bad review on here and I find it hilarious. Sprocket and Stone is awesome! After months of frustration with Parker's having almost no inventory, I called called Sprocket and Stone to see if they had the specific dog food I was looking for. The woman on the other end of the line was incredibly helpful, and offered to put the last bag aside for me to come pick up later in the day. When I entered the store for the first time I found it cozy but not cluttered, and was pleasantly surprised to find it fantastically well-stocked with different brands, raw food, and cool toys that I've never seen before. The bag of dog food was there waiting for me, and the woman working even helped me get the massive bag into my wheel cart, which wasn't expected but was very much appreciated. Sprocket and Stone has a bonus system where you get a star for each visit, and after 10 stars, you get 10 percent off. Additionally, there is a rewards system for the dog food I get that she told me about. I have been getting the same brand for years and had no idea it existed! To top it off, she gave me a mini sample bag of treats to take home to my pup. Overall, a fantastic store run by friendly people that I am looking forward to visiting again soon. read more

I love Sprocket and Stone! Sophie always has thoughtful answers to my questions and the best products. We bought my puppy's first harness there and I came back for a leash. I was looking for something lightweight but sturdy and the traditional pet stores didn't have anything like Sophie's selection. Her prices are also very fair - I compared the price of the harness and it's just as good as online and better than the bigger pet stores, so much better to support a local business. They have the Fromm Grain Free varieties that my dog consistently likes and lots of brands of treats that are high quality and fairly priced. I've had some great conversations with the owner, Sophie. Sophie also makes solid recommendations and always reminds me about the Fromm customer loyalty deal and giving my dog, Pixel, some nice treats when she comes in. I even attended their "First Thursday" event where I got a free beer/tamale while my dog got some free puppy ice cream!
