It was a warm day and I am sure the store is always kept warm but, the smell was overwhelming and I couldn't stay long. I am sure if you owned one pet it may not be as bad in your own home as long as you kept the cage or tank clean but, it helped me make my decision not to get one of these pets.

As you can see, she looks very unhealthy, her shell is malformed, and I had no idea what I was doing. She was likely sick when I purchased her, and I had no idea that the deformed shell showed that she had not been properly cared for. I have since sought advice from folks more knowledgeable about reptiles, and specifically Redfoot tortoises, and two vets. Her shell still looks rough, but 6 years later with proper humidity and temps, the new growth is far healthier. She was treated for two respiratory infections within the year after I got her, due to her poor health. I never thought I'd have to give a tortoise injections of antibiotics, but alas, that's where I found myself. I was naive, and thought that purchasing an animal from a reptile specific store would be safe. I have since learned it was not, and truly feel that the employees took advantage of my lack of knowledge, and sold me an unhealthy animal on purpose, assuming I wouldn't know the difference. I believe a pet is a commitment. We will keep our tortoise and care for her for the rest of her life, but it would have been nice if she had an easier start to life. It took me many years to write this, but that is only a fraction of the time that I will own a deformed tortoise.

The employees were so welcoming and happy to have us walk around and look at everything. I have one of those picky pampered kitties who will only eat certain proteins (chicken or turkey…read moreminced pate) and when he gets bored of the brand or flavor I need to rotate wet food without sacrifice to high quality protein organic pet food. I also have found one brand of dry kibble my kitty loves N&D from Italy, but it's not the easiest to find lately. I know it sounds crazy but can you imagine eating the same food everyday? I cannot and so I will cater to give my kitty variety. It's better for their digestive system and apparently this behavior is very common with his breed so it is almost inevitable we can't order cans by the case without waste... but we donate to shelters if we do:) Well sadly the neighborhood pet food stores in the area all closed due to economic turn down, so it has been one ginormous hassle to get open stock cans and my preference is to support local businesses. I googled and called a few stores to see what brands they carried, and when David answered the phone (who btw is related to Liz - a true family biz) I just knew this was going to be the start of a good pet-partnership! They carry the brands of food I was familiar with and David explained they have a pet rewards program too! They are located in Ukranian Village which isn't very nearby but David offered complimentary delivery right to my building, text me when he arrived and even tossed in a few extra samples treats for us to try.
