While the food here looks AMAZING (hence the reason we decided to brave the Saturday morning crowd), the service is less than stellar. The older lady/hostess was sweet and attentive, we got our drinks in a timely manner and looked over the selections and made a quick decision. Both of our menus were flat on the table and both of us were looking towards the 2 waitresses standing behind the counter gabbing about person affairs. I get it, sometimes we get off track at work, no big deal... BUT the hostess approached the waitresses 3 times on our behalf (guessing she could see the perturbed look on my face) and they weren't even paying attention to her. We walked up to the counter with the waitresses still talking, asked how much our two drinks were that we had taken a sip from. $6... It was only as we handed the money over disgusted from the lack of service that Ivy the waitress even noticed us. We paid and left. read more

I'm reluctantly giving a 4 star review, even through I feel our experience on 9/1/18 was more like a 2 or 3 stars. I used to be quick to pull the trigger on reviews based on a single experience, but a part of me doesn't feel like it's always fair, so I'm hedging high. Still, here were our first impressions: Pros: Wait staff was very friendly and helpful. Cons: -Wait staff appeared to be overworked. The dining room was packed for breakfast/lunch with just 2 servers also doing all the busing. -Sort of an all around grundginess. We had to ask for clean silverware. Also, the place is in serious need of an update. I don't mind well-worn, but when it starts to feel grubby, maybe time to invest in some improvements. I usually scope out the restroom for my wife (overall shape and cleanliness) and I have to wave her off. -Sub-par food: I know many of the recent reviews rave about the quality and quantity of the food, so I don't know what was up with our experience. My wife ordered the fruit cup ($4) and O'Brien Potatoes ($4). For that price, the fuit cup consisted of 3 chuncks of honeydew, 3 grapes, and not even 1/2 of a cut up green apple. She didn't complain about the potatoes, but again, for the price I thought it was a skimpy portion (I should have taken pics, but I'm trying to get away from photographing my meals). I ordered the fried chicken sandwich. I was hopeful when I saw someone with the chicken and waffle (which was my other choice) and was encouraged that the chicken looked pretty good. However, the chicken they use in their sandwich are two small premade filets that I'm sure came in a box frozen. My fries were plentiful, but I wish they'd been a bit crispier. We are from out of town. That said, when we are back to Tacoma we will probably consider other options. read more

Another local fave that's gone down the hill. Heavy, greasy, overwrought foods on our last visit - what happened? It used to be so good - now it's just all greasy, sloppy and not what it once was. I ordered basic bacon and eggs. The bacon was good as it's always been. But the eggs were greasy beyond belief - like "wrap in a napkin" greasy. Anne ordered the Egg White Omelette, ostensibly for the health benefits, but it too was smothered in grease. She had to leave most of it behind it was so bad. And both plates were SMOTHERED in greasy giant chunks of fried potato. They call it "Potatoes O'brien" on the menu - but it's just great big hunks of crazy greasy potatoes fried in , well, grease I guess... Not sure if there's been a chef change, ownership change, or what... but it was pretty awful and we won't be back. 2 stars only because the service was pretty decent. Juicy blue brisket dip on ciabatta side crunchy French fries were all that my boyfriend could talk about all day after lunch. My roasted turkey panini with melted cheese was perfection! I had a cup of beef and rice soup and it was delicious. The broth was just right not too salty and the pieces of beef really worked well with the perfectly cooked rice. They sell homemade salsa and dressings too. We can't wait to be back for some brunch! read more

On one of my increasingly rarer visits to Tacoma, I met a friend at this adorable little cafe in the heart of CopsAreOverbearingCrest. I think Fircrest is a cute little township but trust me when I say - Obey the speed limit or perish. Anyways, we got the last table in the place which is slightly uncomfortably blocking the hallway to the restroom but the breakfast we had would outdo any mild physical discomfort. Between the two of us we plowed through a corned beef hash plate and salmon benedict, both of which were awesome, and the portions were pretty huge considering the moderate prices. Everything was cooked well, including the difficult to master hollandaise, and the icing on the cake... hot waitress. Definitely not a particulary convenient location for non Fircrest residents but if you find yourself nearby, worth the stop for sure. read more

The experience I got here was either remnant of Friday the 13th or just plain bad luck for the whole meal. First off I ordered a blueberry pancake (along with my two companions) but my pancakes came out quite burnt. My friends' pancakes were nicely golden on top but still had raw batter patched throughout the pancake. Prices were reasonable but again the food quality was questionable. I sent it back and the server was sweet enough to have the cook prepare me a new pancake. The second time around my pancake was cooked golden, but again, the batter was raw surrounding the blueberries and to make things worse, the plastic container of butter was set on top the hot pancake which then caused the plastic to warp and melt into the pancake. Plasticized pancake didn't seem so appetizing anymore.Yes, the plastic is compostable (it said so on the outside of the container), but I don't want it dissolving and composting right before my eyes into my pancake. The coffee was also on par with the pancakes. There were chunks of old coffee filter paper floating in my coffee - luckily I drink it black and could see the shredded piece of paper. Yum. :( The only reason I bothered to give this place a star at all is because our server was quite kind and comp'd my meal. She apologized for my bad luck and wished us a good day. I was surprised at how good this turned out to be. The menu is short, but still good at offering variety and a bit of uniqueness. All four of us were completely satisfied with our food and thought the prices were exactly right. This was my pick and the other three still rave about the food and especially the service. I wanted a quality breakfast while I was driving south from Seattle. Spring Lake was a little out of the way but based on yelp reviews it looked like I could get some nice food at a decent price. Again, yelp steered me in the right! I did not find the food to be super flavorful (I ordered biscuits and gravy with a side of fruit). I've had it done better in other places but I have sure had worse. It felt like simple, home cooking. It was certainly above the cisco quality of many chain diners. But, then again, it was biscuits and gravy, not the worlds most exciting meal. The staff was happy to make a substitution for me (fruit for eggs). The food came out quickly and was at the right temperature. As usual the fruit cup was just melons with a single strawberry. I would have loved a piece of banana or peaches or berries or apples or some other sort of fresh fruit. The coffee was fresh and flavorful and refills were never slow to come. The cafe was clean, the staff was wonderfully attentive and happy to smile. 9am Sunday morning the place was not crammed to the gills but was still bustling. All and all I would say this is a solid option. Based on what other diners were saying while I was there the breakfast burrito and the french toast are both delicious options. I was on the road again in less than 30 minutes. If I'm on that drive again I would likely return, they had a number of intriguing options on their daily specials board (specialty french toast with peaches and cream). read more

Two or three stars, I've been going back and forth, so if I could give half stars it would be 2.5. My dining experience had both good and bad. The atmosphere wasn't as inviting as I expected it to be, they have colorful walls, but I think that the décor fell flat maybe, I'm not sure, but it wasn't very warm, or welcoming. I was happy that this place was opened on a Monday as many locally owned eatery establishments are not open on Mondays. I was disappointed that this place is listed as a brunch place, however they only have one breakfast item available after 11am. McDonalds has one thing going for them right now, is that they understand the value, profit, and importance of serving breakfast longer, I wish a place that's listed on Yelp as a brunch place would get that as well. I ordered their fish and chips; the cole slaw that came with it was so bad that I had to spit it out, and I never spit my food out no matter how bad, but it was so old tasting that I feared getting sick, so I spit that stuff right out. The Ketchup is cheap ketchup, it left a huge puddle of water on my plate when I tried to use it. Their fries and fish however were good, fairly decent, nothing amazing though. In the end I spent almost $20 on myself for lunch, for something that truly wasn't worth it. The service was so-so as well, one somewhat nice server, but something was amiss, contributing to the not feeling welcome vibe. Such a great find! Luckily I stumbled across this place while searching for somewhere to take my in-laws for lunch. They're quite picky, so going to a new place is always risky. Two of us had the clubhouse panini and one got the fish and chips...and everyone was happy! The panini was very flavorful with lots of turkey. The fish and chips were crispy on the outside and the fish was flaky and not oily. Everything was great. My in-laws heard about prime rib night (I think they said Thursdays?) and plan on going back on their own. Success! read more

So, I was really excited when I saw they now are serving dinner since it is a short walk from my house. My wife, son, and I went tonight and had a great time. Everything was excellent. I just happened to stop in here on my way home, and ALL scrambles were $4.95. You just can't seem to go wrong with breakfast at this prices. I ordered Mayor Dave's special, and to my surprise it was plentiful and tasty. It was a little weird that the cheese was just thrown on top, and not melted, but I'm not sure if that's a preference thing. Also, the potatoes tasted pre-cooked and slightly warm. I ordered the crab brunch, and order my drink, the waitress walked away. The waiter also forgot my silverware. The crab omelette is overpriced for the little amount of crab you get; they do give you an over excessive amount of cheese to make up for it. The food was decent, just everything seemed really over priced. I didn't get checked on after my food came out (or got a refill of my water since I never got to order a drink). This was my 2nd time being here. The first we walked out after finding out there was a hour wait; not sure why when the food and service isn't great. Also everyone at the bar had to get up on the middle of their food to allow someone with a wake pass because this place has a oversized waiting area and narrow space between tables. As always, relied on Yelp to direct me to a decent place to eat when I was around this neighborhood. It was a little hard to find at first. I drove in a circle around the block and almost missed it a second time but decided I would just go ahead and park, then figure out where I was. Luckily, I ended up right in front of the building. My group came in here right at the beginning of lunch, 11-ish. I was really in the mood for breakfast-y type food and they had some really terrific-sounding scrambles. When I tried to order one though, I was informed that they only serve the one basic breakfast meal during lunch (eggs, potatoes, bacon). Maybe I just missed it but I didn't actually see this or breakfast serving times stated anywhere on the menu or around the restaurant. Oh well. So instead I ordered the quiche of the day, which was decent. It came with a salad and fruit, and what I mostly appreciated about it was the overall size of the entire meal. It was perfect, not small but not large either. The lady that served us (she appeared to be the person running the restaurant) was so pleasant, had a great sense of humor, and was perfectly attentive as well. While I was not crazy about what I had ordered, I really enjoyed the overall experience and will be back next time I'm nearby. read more

We stopped in for a quick bite after running the narrows bridge. It was busy but we were seated right away. The hostess was friendly. The breakfast was on of the best I've had in a long time. A friend had the spencer scramble I think with asparagus and sausage and it was delicious (I was sad I didn't get it) my sister had the ham and eggs and the steak was huge!! She loved it. I went with just bacon and egg breakfast. The best part about the meal was the potatoes! Perfectly cooked and delicious. Reason for 4 stars is the service was a bit slow. Not impressed. Since we had moved to town, my husband and I had heard a lot of great things about this cafe so one Sunday we decided to try it out. We went in around noon and wanted to order lunch, after deciding what we wanted our waitress came to take our order only to THEN tell us "we only do breakfast on Sundays" ummm...it would have been nice to have that fact mentioned somewhere before when I was about to order...nothing was even mentioned on the menu, door or anywhere else I could see in the restaurant. I was not in the mood for breakfast at all, but figured I would give it a try. Food was average at best. Staff wasn't very friendly. Overpriced for what it was. Stopped in on a busy Saturday morning with my 10-month old. I was by myself because my husband was sick and u was feeling a little nervous about having a restless, unpredictable baby with me and no help. I felt welcomed the moment I walked in! They asked if I needed a high chair and told me I was welcome to sit at the bar until a table opened up. I took them up on the offer. We sat and I chatted with another customer next to me until our food came. The girls working behind the barker asking how we were and if I needed help with anything. Baby was being good but was getting restless. The food we ate was delicious and the food I ordered to take home for my husband was made quickly. They helped me box put he rest of my meal and bagged it all too. The price was not bad at all for the portions they served and their food was so fresh, not greasy, and truly made with pride. From the moment you walk in to the Spring Lake Cafe you feel at home. It has such an amazing and cozy atmosphere and The staff are all so welcoming and friendly. The menu is perfect, it's not over whelming with a million different options. That alone told me that they make the food fresh and to order. If you're big on HEARTY manly-yummy breakfast, then, this place is for you! If you're like me, and you'd prefer a half order of avocado eggs benny (they don't have this, btw) you're outta luck. I did snag a bowl of Snoqualmie falls oatmeal with all the fixins (raisins, brown sugar, etc.) but the rest of the crew killed some chicken fried steak, biscuits and gravy and all that jazz. Place is super clean. Super small. Expect a wait. Expect to wait outside if you want to be comfortable. I also think being unachievably beautiful is a requirement to waitresses here. Well the family has left and frankly I'm tired of cooking so I was looking for a Phone local place to grab breakfast and I found it at the Spring Lake Café. This is a cute little neighborhood café in Fircrest that has a warm and inviting atmosphere. It seems like a lot of locals come to this place in the wait staff seems to know them all by name. I had the country Benedict which was huge and I had to take half of it home. It is served on homemade biscuits which are awesome. My mom enjoyed the banana nut pancakes and their cinnamon sausage. When I come back I am definitely having some of those cinnamon sausages because I tasted a bite and they were perfectly seasoned. Maybe next time when I come by they will know my name because I plan to visit often. read more

I really like Spring Lake. I primarily come here for breakfast, and my favorite facet of their breakfast is that you can get half-orders of their delicious scrambles. These are the perfect size for me. Their country fried steak plate is great, but too much food for one person. If you're looking at this, bring someone to split it with! If I have to offer an area for improvement, it would be the coffee - it's not terrible, but not great either. When I come here for lunch, I normally opt for the quiche of the day.
