While driving through Catskill on a late Saturday night, I decided to stop for Chinese takeout,…read morechoosing between Great Wall Chinese Restaurant or the more visible Long River Chinese Restaurant across the street. I decided to go with the first choice and get that "blue nugget" too! Great Wall Chinese Restaurant is a typical Chinese takeout place, which is not very visible from the main road (US Route 9W) and hidden away on the north side end of the Grandview Plaza in Catskill, behind Dunkin Donuts. This old school place is order at the counter with open kitchen and a few tables in front of the counter for eating in. The menu offerings here include the standard Chinese dishes/items including Cantonese, Szechuan and Chef's specialties. The prices here seem very reasonable with each item/dish priced under $10 before tax. 31 Lunch Specials ($4.50-$4.55) with roast pork fried rice are served before 3PM and 19 Special Combination Plates ($6.65-$7.15) with roast pork fried & egg roll are offered. I ordered the C12 Chicken Lo Mein ($6.95) with roast pork fried rice & egg roll and Steamed Dumplings (8 for $4.70). The food was hot and ready to go in about 12 minutes after ordering. The lo mein dish had a mix of soft pieces of boneless chicken, scallions, onions, cabbage and soft noodles. The fried rice had a firm texture with a mix of golden rice, tender lean roast pork pieces and onions. The egg roll was stuffed with a mix of shredded cabbage, ground pork, & seasonings with a thick firm deep fried wrap on the outside. The dumplings consisted of ground pork mixture rolled in balls and stuffed in a thick dough pocket, soy dumpling sauce on the side. Tasty crunchy fried noodles with duck sauce was also provided in the bag. The food overall tasted pretty good and fresh and there was enough food for another dinner for the next evening.

It's just not that great, unfortunately because I've really been craving good Thai food. The dining…read morespace itself is in need of a good scrub and renovation - it's got the vibe of a Chinese takeout, but they serve it as sit-in dining. I sat on duct tape that got stuck to my leg. The server was lovely, I think he was the owner/chef's husband. And the food came out promptly so no concerns there. But the food was just "okay". The pad see ew and pad Thai were the same noodle(?), and both fairly bland with not enough proteins. The best dish was the Tom Kha soup which was good, but not nearly as creamy as I'm used to - it was more of a broth. I really hope things get better because I'd love to visit again and give it another go.

The vegan hand pulled noodles were unfortunately disappointing. It tasted like box pasta that was mixed in Szechuan chili oil and five spice, which is a nice concept, but not worth the price. The texture resembled Italian pasta and lacked the chewiness I was looking forward to in traditional hand pulled noodles. I wonder if future iterations of the vegan option could include some sort of vegan protein to replace the lamb, which I'm sure adds a lot to the flavor and experience of the dish; without it it was bland. The lychee margarita also just tasted like a normal margarita, couldn't taste the lychee at all. The shiso tea also did not taste like shiso. It was purple...I couldn't even place what the flavor was. Hibiscus? I like the concept of this place, it's a nice divergence from the same old New American food that's dominating the Hudson food scene. I look forward to coming back once they've fine tuned their menu. Also take my review with a grain of salt because I'm sure it's a great place for a meat eater. Vegans be warned!! :p

Haema might very well be the best restaurant in Hudson. Lil Deb's has held that title for me for…read moremany years, but in anticipation of its closing (which remains devastating), a new spot will ultimately be taking over the top spot -- and Haema is the clear frontrunner. The food is a beautiful fusion of Korean and Chinese cuisines with some European influences, reflecting the chef's culinary training and cultural background. Though I love all of the New American farm-to-table spots in Hudson, the dining scene has been lacking in other types of cuisine for some time, and Haema perfectly fits the sensibility of the town while still contributing to the overall variety of the landscape. We came here at 8:15 on a Saturday night. Despite being quite new, it was quite full when we arrived, which is not a given, as there have been other potentially interesting restaurant openings in the last few years that have not garnered this level of immediate appeal. Somewhat relatedly, Haema is in the space that was formerly Bar Bene (which I never went to in my many trips to Hudson because it never interested me -- and it seems I was not the only one given the fact that it is no longer), and it is completely transformed. It's cohesive, warm, and inviting, with energy that feels palpable as a passerby on Warren Street. Though the food is the main draw here, the cocktails are excellent too. We both got the Passionately Naked (mezcal, genepy, passionfruit, apertivo, lime) which I imagine, given the name and ingredients, is a twist on the Naked and Famous which happened to be one of my favorite classic cocktails. My partner also got the Lychee Margarita (blanco, lychee, lime, agave, shiso salt) and I later tried the Salted Plum Manhattan (akashi ume whisky, salted plum, oka kura bermetto), which were also both excellent. All using specs of classic cocktails but with ingredients reflecting the Korean and Chinese influences seen across the food menu. Food-wise, truly everything was excellent so there's not much sense in giving letter grades as I usually do in reviews. The food very clearly reflects the pedigree of Haema's chef -- formerly of Gramercy Tavern and Van Da in NYC -- while still being approachable and familiar. There's an impressive variety of dishes on the menu with plenty of gluten-free and vegan options should you require that. Eats, below: Steelhead Trout Crudo w/ coconut nam jim, nectarines, cucumber, jalapeño Bright, fun, fresh, creative, and a great complement to some of the richer, warm dishes. House Salad w/ miso-ginger dressing, little gem, kohlrabi, lotus root chips If you think every house salad is bound to be basic, think again. The dressing is both savory and bright, and ties together all of the fresh, earthy flavors/textures of the rest of the components. Ginger-Chicken Meatballs w/ tamarind-green peppercorn sauce Do not neglect the snacks because these are a must-order. Only three in an order so they are low commitment and thus easy to add on. The meatballs themselves were unbelievably flavorful and the sauce was just next-level. Mushroom Larb (vegan option of the pork larb) w/ shredded veg, lime dressing, herbs, rice powder, peanuts, pickled thai chilies, cucumbers, crackers Between my desire for enough veggies, my love of mushrooms, and the reviews I saw referencing the vegan larb, this was a must-order for me. This is something I could eat all day and in massive quantities. Larb often feels like a hodgepodge of a lot of great things though I know there is plenty of skill/technique involved, but the varied nature of it makes so satisfying yet it's light so it's easy to eat a lot of it. Five Spice Duck Leg Confit w/ coconut creamed corn, scallion chimichurri If there is one dish on the menu that you cannot miss, it's this one. So unbelievably flavorful and perfectly executed. Your first bite will make your eyes pop out of your face in cartoon-like fashion.
