We at dinner here while staying at the Big Meadows Lodge. The setting was what you might expect for a lodge. It was a nice open space. The food was average comfort food but given there weren't many other options around, it was good. My daughter ordered the Wild Mushroom Bolognese which she said was good. The sauce was different as it was more like chunky toppings. My husband ordered the Big Meadows Burger. It looked like it had been sitting for a while. I ordered the Sweet Tea-Smoked Chicken. It comes with mashed sweet potatoes and collard greens. The chicken didn't seem to have a whole lot of meat on it. It was mostly the bones of the chicken. The sweet potatoes were very sweet. My husband and daughter split a Blackberry Cobbler. The said it was good but would have liked more of the pastry shell. They said the ice cream was the best part of it. Dinner first night - turkey dinner was delicious ! Bourbon glazed steak tips was like a beef stew. Swimming in gravy ?? Lunch on day 2 turkey melt sandwich-hoping it was the roast turkey but no it was deli turkey- not so great. We ate here three times. The two stars are for location, which is wonderful if you're staying in Shenandoah National Park, and for the good waitresses we had our first day in the park. Our first night there, my daughter and I split mushroom ravioli, which came with five ravioli drowned in cream sauce, thankfully with lots of mushrooms. The flavor was pretty good, but for the price I would not order it again. Worse were the hush puppies. Five small, mediocre pieces for $10 are nowhere near worth it. Our waitress was friendly and efficient, but the cost for so-so food was a let down. For breakfast the next morning, the hostess was MIA so a random person from the lodge's staff seated us. It took over ten minutes to get waited on and another 25 minutes for coffee and water to be delivered to the table. The coffee was full of grounds (as was the refill!) and only half full. I had to go ask someone for cream and sugar because none was delivered even though it was requested when ordered. It was upwards of 45 minutes when our food finally arrived. I ordered French toast with fruit on top and my daughter ordered a short stack of pancakes. I had to go get butter and syrup because it didn't get delivered with the food either. Both dishes came out too cold to melt butter. I would not order French toast here again, as the bread was from a cheap loaf from the grocery store. The fruit on top was good with the exception of the overripe, mushy blueberries. Our waitress took no responsibility, blaming the kitchen for the back up, though they obviously have nothing to do with the serving of water, coffee, cream, sugar, and syrup. She said she had 12 tables and said she brought the food as soon as it was done and didn't know why it was cold. The pancakes we ordered the day before were on the table within five minutes and were hot. I'm just saying. To solidify the poor score, a boy at the table next to us knocked a glass off the table and we were shocked to see his dad come back with a broom and dust pan and sweep it up himself. I don't even know what to say about that, other than, what would have happened if he'd cut himself? So, while I do recommend Big Meadows Lodge as a wonderful place to stay, for dining I recommend Pollock Dining Room at Skyland Resort, which had exceptional service, large portions, and phenomenal food for about the same price. read more

When we arrived, my wife and I explained to the waitress that we were driving Skyline Drive for our anniversary and was looking to cap the event with an anniversary meal. Unfortunately, telling her didn't help. The waitress was exceeding friendly, but that turned out to be a bad thing. Throughout our meal, when we asked for something, she would leave, but then we would watch as she stopped and visited at length with every other table in the room -- while we waited for our drinks, for salads, for bread, etc. At one point, after leaving with our request for refills, she stopped at the table directly across the aisle from us (4 feet away) and talked with them for literally 10 minutes. I ordered the roasted turkey dinner which came with stuffing and broccoli. My wife ordered the meatloaf which came with mashed potatoes and onion straws. To go with our meals, we ordered an $8 bread basket which prompted great expectations. However, it came out with literally 2 store-bought Parkerhouse roles, 2 smallish pieces of cornbread and one other small non-descript bread item. You get far better at most other restaurants for free. It was definitely not a premium, $8 bread basket. Then both of our meals came out. Cold. The broccoli was the coldest dish (that was supposed to be hot) that I have ever been served at a restaurant. I asked the waitress if she could just microwave our two plates of food. They had pretty good flavor. They just weren't hot. She took them, and quite some time later, she came back -- without our food, and announced that they were remaking them. Then the dishes came out a second time - unbelievably, still not hot. I pleaded with her again - just microwave them. She took them and then came back a third time. STILL not hot. She was very apologetic, saying that she had zapped them for a minute. That clearly was not nearly enough. We asked (twice) to see the manager - once asking our waitress and when they didn't show up, and with our waitress missing, we asked another waitress to ask the manager to come see us. She finally showed up, and when we summarized our anniversary experience, she expressed regret, but explained that the waitress was fairly new and just needed some more training... (You think?) To make up for everything, she offered us free desert. We left. On Skyline Drive, go for the scenery but skip the Big Meadows Spottswood Dining Room. You will thank me for it. read more

The restaurant is located in the lodge of the Big Meadows camp ground, and very convenient for a break from camp fire food. Its not air conditioned so it can get a little humid and stuffy inside, but its not too bad. Service was ok- friendly but not very attentive. The food was hit or miss. The strawberry salad for lunch was OK- the blackberry vinaigrette was the best part. The breakfast pancakes were OK, but nothing special. The best part of the meal and not be missed in the blackberry ice cream pie. A huge serving can feed 2-3 people easily, and is absolutely delicious. Maybe go just for the dessert! read more

I wanted to love this place. The atmosphere is beautiful. But that was probably the best part of our visit. We ordered the Trout and the Osso Bucco. Both were over salted and my Osso Bucco was a little on the tougher side. We did save room for their famous dessert - a blackberry ice cream pie, which was very good. Our server also came back and asked about ice cream (that supposedly came with the kids meals we also ordered) and we said that we would eventually opt for the pie to share so don't worry about the ice cream. Hard to decide between four and three stars. Dinners have been very good so I went with four. Breakfasts are not much. You are a relatively captive audience when staying here and lucky the food is as good as it is. It is even better when hungry after a day of hiking. There are no reservations so go 30-40 minutes before you expect to eat. If you are lucky and go around sunset, the view can be spectacular. Dinners- Ravioli was very good. Do over Meatloaf was very good. Country Carbonara was enjoyed by two of our Party Trout was the best so far. Have it! Side salads are good and sides with meals are good but inconsistent with portions. Service is good some nights and meh others. Weary hikers stumbled into this cute lodge in Shenandoah on a Saturday afternoon. We were fortunate to get the last open table and sat down for some lunch. We were all drawn to the turkey pot pie on the menu and half of our table decided to order it. The staff was friendly and the food came out relatively quickly. Turns out that the turkey pot pie was really turkey soup with a flaky pie-crust-like biscuit. That being said, it was pretty good, but it was lacking the normal ratio of crust to filling. We did not go for buffet breakfast because we didn't want to overeat. Hubby had pancakes and bacon which he said was fine. I had the lamest French toast ever. The other yelp reviews regarding dinner were all unhelpful-not because folks did not write good reviews-it's just that all of them report that the food is mediocre and overpriced-and we have no choice to eat here anyway because there is no where else to go. (Skyland same issue) Also, a lot of the reviews are old and the photos not so helpful. Tonight we sat outside and it was beautiful! We had the spinach salad which was generous and full of blackberries, melon, candies walnuts, Gorgonzola cheese. It was so good! The spinach was fresh. The burger was delicious-perfectly medium rare and juicy. The fries-also excellent (unlike at skyland last night). The service was going well until when the waiter brought our burgers and spilled the ketchup on the mesh table....and then didn't come back to clean it. Fail! The Spottswood Dining Room is located in the Big Meadows Lodge, and is beautifully rustic as well as historic. It has a fantastic view, especially at sunset. The vaulted wooden ceiling is amazing, as is the natural stone fireplace. It is a near-fine-dine located in an amazing National Park, a perfect place to have a memorable meal to make your experience complete! The dishes available are tied to the park's natural resources, as well as history. Blackberry desserts are featured, and my favorite was certainly the blackberry ice cream. Very delicious! The Apple Bread Pudding was another great dessert. The New Deal Turkey goes back to the history of the park, and is an excellent meal. Likewise the Hoover's Rainbow Trout hearkens to the area history. The trout is covered in a mound of crabmeat which is again an East Coast treat. There is also a hearty Meadows Meatloaf that is a luscious meal to fill up a hungry hiker. If one is looking for a lighter meal, there are nice salads and sandwiches that can fit the bill. Service was prompt and courteous in our experience. We sometimes had to wait a short while to be seated, when business was bustling. However, one can wait in the lodge's main room and watch TV or play board games while one waits. Certainly a good place to pass the time... read more

We stayed at the Lodge cabins for 4 nights and ate here several times since there is little else available nearby. We were there at the end of the season so it was never very crowded and we typically had short waits for a table. Prices are a bit high, as might be expected. While the food was good, overall, there were a few issues. My burger ordered medium rare was closer to rare. My order of fish and chips was under cooked and raw/cold inside (but the fries were great). The waitress offered to replace it with a new order which meant waiting for it and when it arrived the fish was fine but the fries were not as good. ;( They also had a 'bread basket' option at dinner for $8 that was really disappointing with some items OK but the dinner roll was dry and appeared to have been microwaved. It's one thing to have bad bread when free but to pay $8 it should be better. read more

Me and my family visited the Spottswood Dining Room after stopping at the various overlooks inside of the park. We were greeted by notably kind staff, and were quickly served with glasses of water. For an appetizer, we chose the bread basket. This came with two rolls, two biscuits, and two cornbread muffins- all being thoroughly enjoyable. For our entrees, we ordered the Caesar salad with grilled chicken, chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, mushroom ravioli, and the carbonara. The biggest hit around the table was the Blackberry Hot Honey. This comes with the chicken and waffles, and was incredible. After asking our waiter, we found out that the honey was not sold in the gift shop, but they are working to add it to the selection relatively soon. Everybody loved their food. The presentation was beautiful, also. We ordered two desserts. The blackberry cobbler and pie. The desserts were huge and satisfied our party of 5. One star was lost. We had originally planned to stop at this restaurant for the beautiful view. When we were greeted by our hostess, we were informed of that we could not be seated outside due to the high temperature. This is not the restaurants fault, but it altered our experience overall. So, maybe don't go on an especially hot day if you're wanting to sit outside. I've have dinner and lunch here. The turkey platter for dinner was very tasty, plenty food after a long hike and mainly made with local ingredients. The stuffing was very good, everything made from scratch with that classic American touch but modern presentation. They also serve a great selection of local Virginia beers. The carrot and ginger soup was so good, kept me wanting more. The dinner rolls were very fresh and had a sweet glaze. They have live music both Friday and Saturday night at the bar downstairs. It also has a small menu with things like wings, pizza and salads. Coffee was standard.  I ordered the gourmet burger with fries. It was very juicy, crispy fries and a great lunch! The Turkey dinner was very good - came with mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry relish, and green beans. Came with Virginia Ham, Apples, Gouda Cheese and Apple Cider mustard on sourdough. The Gouda tasted processed and was not "melty". For $15 I expect a better quality sandwich. My husband and son got the angus burgers. They enjoyed them. My eldest son got the fish and chips and was happy with his food although I felt the portion was small in conjunction with the price. We came up up to the Lodge and we all got a dessert after cooking burgers on the Blackstone Griddle at the campsite for lunch. Tim and Jess each got the Blackberry Cobbler with blackberry ice cream on it. Don and I shared a piece of their Blackberry Ice Cream pie and I asked for chocolate sauce instead of the blackberry compote because I don't like the seeds. That's also why I don't get the cobbler. Olivia tried the Spottswood Chef Salad which was a customary Romaine Lettuce salad with a Cucumber, Grape Tomatoes, Black Olives, Crumbled Egg, Smoked Turkey, Tavern Ham, and Swiss & Cheddar Cheese. Though it wasn't spectacular, the salad was satisfying. She also got a cup of red Manhattan Clam Chowder that I didn't get a chance to try. It must of been good. Others sampled were a fairly standard Shenandoah Burger (Double Stack Fresh Burger, Caramelized Onions, Potato Roll with Tomato and Lettuce) and The Meadows (a tender Pasta dish loaded with Roasted Farm Vegetables, Herbs, and a Marinara Sauce). Both were safe options for travelers. For dessert, we split a Blackberry Sundae with two scoops of their signature Blackberry Ice Cream and Blackberry Syrup...yummy sweet creaminess. Service was outstanding from the moment we walked in until leaving. With reasonable prices and such friendly service, this was a welcome relaxation opportunity for our vacation compared to the majority of tourist sites we visited. Spotswood dining is part of the Shenandoah national park restaurants. It was open and they were practicing social distancing. I had to try the Virginian grilled cheese as I never heard of it before. It had country ham, smoked Gouda, Granny Smith apple slices, lettuce tomato, apple cider mustard, and grilled sourdough bread. I was a little concerned ordering this has all these different taste together kind of concerning to me. But am I surprised it was a very good sandwich. I thought it was a little high in price as it rang in at $14 but that did include fries. My wife purchased the Angus burger which was a 6 ounce grilled patty with your basic sandwich toppings hers rang in just a little over $13 and again it did include the fries. The menu was kind of small as the most are From our current circumstances. The heat was out which made it rather cold that afternoon. They had a fire going in the fireplace which kind of made it though romantic lunch I guess. If you're not wanting to pay high price for a national Park restaurant I would suggest a picnic basket. read more

The good. Beautiful views in a historic dining room. The bad, pretty much everything else. When staying at the lodge, you don't have many options. So we tried both Dinner and breakfast. The gourmet burger was raw in the middle. Not rare, truly raw, but it had potential to be good if cooked properly. I had the beet salad, which was okay. The special blackberry kale salad was too much kale but berries and dressing was good. The blackberry pie, delicious. In the a.m. the buffet was okay. Coffee weak. Our third night there, we went into front Royal and brought back sandwiches. We couldn't do the restaurant again. I recommend packing the cooler and skipping the restaurant. read more

We had good views of the mountains, which was really the only enjoyable thing about our meal. The food was bland so if you are okay with plain food then this is your place. The chicken quesadillas was mediocre, the cheese was not melted just laying on top. The chicken was super bland, but added salsa and that made it easier to eat. The roasted chicken was SO plain, zero flavor. It was like eating hospital food. The presentation of the french fries was a nice touch in the silver pail bucket. The cole slaw did not taste right either. Was told by the waiter the expresso machine was broken, so no coffee. The lounge area right outside was very comfortable with rocking chairs, fireplace , small table for kids, game of checkers, and books to read. When I asked to get a table outside overlooking the mountains, he said "you're not sitting there unless you have an animal." That was the first of many red flags about this dump of a restaurant. Second, we waited for over one hour for our food only to have it served to us cold. It wasn't just one plate that was cold. Every single one of the 4 meals that we ordered felt like they were sitting in the refrigerator for an hour. I have never experienced this anywhere as long as I have been alive. Third, the menu was incredibly overpriced. Lastly, the cold "medium" steak had the texture of a leather shoe. All in all, this is a terrible place to "eat" and would not recommend it to anyone. This morning, we had breakfast here right when they opened at 730am. We were very disappointed. The bacon was hard as a hard cracker and tasted rancid. The eggs were the worst scrambled eggs I have ever seen or tasted. Spit out the first bite. The biscuit was try and tasted like margarine. The grits tasted like plain boxed grits boiled with no butter. Edible but blah. The coffee was barely drinkable. We should never of tried this place again!
