I would ALWAYS prefer to buy locally, but most of the time it makes no sense. Consider this: ~~~~~ I went to Sportsmen's Warehouse in Mesa several years ago to buy an assortment of primers for testing reloads for my new 44 SPL revolver. I had to stand in line for FORTY FREAKING MINUTES while those guys at the counter jabberred and jabberred like best buddies having a beer about the merits of this weapon or that one. I have SERIOUS back issues and it was shear freaking misery for me to do this. I told the guy who finally waited on me, "Hey, man. I know you don't run this place, but my wait to buy these primers was just NOT ACCEPTABLE. Perhaps you ought to have two lines? One for lookie lous and one for people who actually want to BUY SOMETHING?" I made a point of being calm and nice, even though my back was afire. I told him politely that they would NEVER see my face again at that counter. I'd rather pay the UPS hazard fee than stand in line for 45 minutes. That's a NO BRAINER. I have been to this store a few times for different items. A few things I noticed is employees are not friendly and do not like their jobs. Also, the prices are higher than everywhere else. It brings me back to the 90's when you bought something then weeks later you see it at a different store for $30 more/less. Now they do match competitors prices with proof. Their website also says not only do they match it they also will beat the match by 1%. The problem, with the exception of the manager, none of the employees at this location knew that. I even showed them their website on my phone proving to them the company they work for beats the match by 1% and I still got the "no we don't do that...well I never heard that...maybe a manager can...". I have better things to do than price check everything in a store to keep myself from being legally robbed and then get the run around by a miserable employee. I wanted to give this store my business being close to my house but Scheels is honestly worth the trip compared to Sportmans Warehouse. At Scheels they welcome you when you walk in, employees are professional and helpful, the prices aren't outrageous, and they thank you for coming on the way out. I placed an online order for a Jetboil stove and fuel, planning to pick it up later that day. I arrived at the store about an hour after placing the order--before getting the official "ready for pickup" email--because I had driven all the way from North Scottsdale to Mesa and wanted to visit a few other stores while I was in the area. However, I finished visiting those other stores earlier than expected so I decided to head to Sportsman's. When I went to the customer service desk, I politely asked the cashier if they could check the status of my order. I even let them know that if it was going to take a while, I'd be totally fine coming back the next day. I wasn't trying to rush anyone--I just didn't want to sit around for hours. Unfortunately, the cashier was extremely rude and condescending. He went back and forth with me for several minutes before even agreeing to check on the order. When he finally did call the back to check, he made a point of telling them I was "early," but said it in such a nasty, sarcastic tone--with a fake smile on his face-- that it honestly shocked me. I could even hear the fulfillment team on the phone saying they were working on it right then. After a bit of a wait, the order came up to the front and was handed--once again--to the same cashier. He didn't acknowledge that it was mine, even though I had already shown him my order confirmation with both items and given him my name. The only reason I knew it was ready was because I got the pickup notification email. So, I had to get back in line to collect the order I had already been there waiting on. When I finally received my items, the cashier spoke to me like I was a child. I left feeling completely disrespected and disappointed. I was this close to canceling my order entirely. REI will continue to have my business, but after this experience, I won't be shopping at this location again. First and last time! read more

This used to be a great, welcoming store. Now it's all corporate--no heart, no soul. They got rid of the people who made it special. The people that have been there for years. The people that were Sportsman's warehouse. If you want to help the corporate out and not the people that make it sportsmen, then spend all your money here. If I were you, I would go to Bass pro shop or some place that cares about customers and employees. Have been using the location for 10+ years and have always had relatively consistent and good service. Good selection of products and if not in stock I order online and either ship home or free to store. Recently had an interaction with management and they are truly a class act. I went to SPEND $1,000 or so on a crossbow. When someone finally noticed me, they knew nothing about crossbows in general and even less about the ones they had in stock. He made no effort to find out anything and did not even try to find someone who did know something. We've made a lot of purchases at Sportsmans - and bought gift cards as well. We'll never return after our most recent purchase. We bought stadium seats, and they sucked, so we wanted to return them two days after purchasing WITH a receipt, and they wouldn't take them beck because the tags were removed! You couldn't even open them without removing the paper, wrap around tag (that I threw away). What kind of return policy is this???? Guess what, Sportsman's warehouse? So you have to take a number and wait behind all the people looking at guns, filling out their background check, waiting for that to be processed, then checked out at the register. 20 minutes? Will never buy from again! Strike 1- i was going to purchase a hydration pack they said was ready for pickup in 1 hour. I decided to go look at it in person before buying. They didn't even have the item. I asked an employee where it was and he said he'd never even seen it at the store. Strike 2- I stopped in to look at an item. The sales associate didnt even know the most basic information on operating the item. Strike 3- I purchased an item online. It was supposed to be ready for pickup in 5 days. When the online status showed nothing had been processed, I emailed them. They responded that they have a week to try and find the item from some supplier to fill the order. It used to be my favorite store. Whenever you went in there were people there to help you and they knew what they were doing. Have bought tons of stuff from there over the past 40+ years, but I've been there three times in the last week and I have to tell you I can't recommend them anymore. They don't have anybody there to help you. I bought a new rod and reel and wanted some line put on it which they can do but there was nobody there that could do it. They said come back next week so I came back today and there was nobody there that could do it they said come back this afternoon and I'm sorry I said no Service is horrible. Can't say anything bad about the rest of the store, but the firearms Dept is a dumpster fire at best. Waited over 30 minutes to pick up a handgun I purchased online, mostly because of the employees just BS'ing with "customers" that are not there to purchase anything. The second time(and last) I went to look at a scope. Again waited for about 15-20 minutes with only 3 people being attended to. So I went elsewhere and spent my $1500. Same obese guy just hanging out down at the end of the counter talking to someone not buying anything. Another employee called for him to help with something and he said " I'll be there in a minute". The employee who needed help was frustrated with this guy. I can see why. I have no idea how this individual even has a job there. Completely lazy and useless... Well it seems as though this location has issues with consistent staff professionalism and customer service. A tall fellow entered the store in front of me and I followed. Seems like we were both headed over to the fishing department and upon walking through he received a "Hello. Can I help you find something?" by an older associate. I was about 30 feet behind and as I approached the older associate he quickly glanced my way and continued on. I didn't think too much about it until a female associate did the same thing! She asked the guy walking ahead of me if she could help him find something. When I approached her vicinity she literally stared me in the eyes and looked back down to the clothes she was folding. No hello, no acknowledgment, no nothing. I ended up going to another sporting goods store and was promptly greeted and helped. This location needs to be restaffed. read more

I went to Sportsman's Warehouse to buy a gun safe when the associates loaded it they decided not to be careful and cracked my bed i have attached pictures down below. When i mentioned to them what they did they said it wasn't their fault. Like excuse me what do you mean it's not your fault you did it. Myron was the associate he is a manager at the store. never once did they mention not being liable about customers vehicle damages. Definitely would give them zero stars. Got my Benelli and I couldn't be happier with the entire transaction; easy in, easy payment, easy out. No 12 ga shells in stock, but that's a National issue, not something this store has control over. The store I reviewed earlier today (see previous review for another gun store) just lost over two thousand dollars in business for being sexist, male chauvinists.... Sportsman's was the exact opposite; they looked at me when talking about MY gun purchase, instead of doing everything through my husband. I appreciate that. I'm always for giving the local guy my business... until they don't appreciate it... then I'm not above using a big box store for a major (to me) purchase. You have our business, SW! Where do I begin, online shows that they have stock of an item, when you drive there, they haven't and the staff's attitude is that the website is often wrong and walks away. Wanting to buy a scope, well good luck trying to see one within an hour, grab a ticket. They have the scopes in the firearms counter and the staff won't serve anyone else while they're waiting for an ATF clearance. Nothing more annoying than watching staff talk amongst themselves while the queue is getting longer and longer. Come on guys, respect the customers time and give him the service he deserves, after all his money is keeping your job afloat. Oh, ammo is on a shelf, nice and easy but primers, you need a ticket in the queue . The opposition who's name I shouldn't mention but I think we all know who, EVERYTHING is on the shelf, even rifles. We came in here looking to purchase a firearm. We ended up getting the gun along with the extended warranty. The guy who assisted us was great, he deserves 5 stars. 10 outta 10! Less then two weeks later we receive an email saying the gun is on sale for over $100 dollars off. We called in to customer service to inquire into getting the discount since it was less than 14 days since it was purchased. They ended up referring us to the store and said since it was over 7 days they could not do anything but maybe the store could. When we called the store they forwarded us to the gun counter but nobody answered. Took 3 attempts before we got over there to be told that nothing can be done unless the discount was offered before pick up. We had purchased it in store same day. Extremely disappointed that they couldn't help us out being it was so close to the purchase date that the discount was offered. read more

I have shopped at the Mesa location many times, having a consistently great experience. The salespeople and management have always been courteous, knowledgeable, and helpful. Yes, sometimes there is a wait, because with their prices (lowest in town and they price match) there are more customers than in any other shops. (Real review: I don't work there or know anyone who works there). Yes, the salespeople take their time with customers and discuss options rather than herding them through their purchases. Where I differ from less enthusiastic reviewers is, I want the salesperson to deal with the person in front of me the same as I want them to deal with me. That's why Sportsmans is my go-to. (And at the Mesa location at least, all the ammo is on the floor) read more

I purchased a Fly Fishing Orbis Rod/Reel Combo online for $149.00. The listing on their website showed a 4 piece fly rod, reel and a carrying case. When it was delivered, it was just the rod in a tube. No Reel. After notifying Sportsman's Warehouse about the error, they said (after a two day wait) that the listing was only for the rod, even though the website listing said Rod/Reel Combo. I have a screenshot of the webpage and and email reciept that says it was a Rod/Reel Combo. But the listing has now been changed on their website, and has been scrubbed online. Customer Service indicates that they only want to honor the Rod portion of the combo. This seems like fraud to me. I give this Sportsman's Warehouse a single star because zero star is not available. If they made an error on their website, they should still honor the purchase made by an unsuspecting buyer, who thought they were buying what was actually shown on the website listing. Customer service answered my initial inquiry very quickly, but stated that they would need to contact the warehouse to decide what to do. Two days later I was informed that they would not honor the webpage description. read more

I love browsing sporting stores for camping gear. The young workers in the back were very friendly and assisted me in pricing for certain sleeping bags I was looking at that day. The store has a great selection of camping supplies, but I wish they had more in the lantern department. read more

I hate shopping here. It's always a ridiculous wait to get help around the guns and ammo section and other areas have no one walking around to provide help. The gun and ammo section seems like everything is moving in slow motion. They also will close their registers well before the store closes so your wait could be for nothing. The last time I was here, I used my stop watch, pulled a number and waited. And waited. And waited. Over 20 minutes later they were only on number 74 and I had number 87. They either need more people or they need to make their process more efficient. Also, they should have a line for gun purchases versus other stuff. They could probably help several people more quickly and clear the line faster. One time I waited at least 15 minutes and they were not calling numbers and the guy behind the counter just totally ignored me standing a couple of feet away and instead called over some guy waiting after me! One star to that dude, too, because he knew I was waiting. I gave up. 4 times in, same experiences each time and walked out with nothing. I'll go elsewhere. read more

I ordered a couple of rifles and the date of order completion was March 18th. Customer service confirmed arrival but the store didn't process the order. I was not unfair about not meeting the date. I called several times to check and one of the rifles did arrive but I could not pick up without the full order being filled according to staff. I patiently waited until the 28th of March (date staff promised) and the other rifle was still not in. I was not mean at all just displayed my disappointment due to the need of my order. I told them and customer service I was going to cancel and buy from Scheels (who had a better price anyway) and they made ZERO attempt to save my business. I came in and asked to get some ammo as a present for my dad and asked for help to find the correct things - as I am not experienced with firearms. They got most of them correct, but when I looked afterwards I noticed a number I didn't recognize and looked it up, it was the wrong kind. This store is 20 miles out of my way so I called to check and make sure that I could return or exchange it, the person on the phone told me that I was able to as long as it was same day, so I come back, another 20 something miles and walk in with my bag and receipt for them to tell me that it is federally illegal (I have no idea, I would expect the GUN SHOP to know that), they tell me that someone new must have told me that and then call the manager over who offers me a crappy 15% discount on a over $40 box. Safe to say, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who wants to talk to slightly (giving way too much credibility to these employees) experienced people. Save some money and find anywhere else to shop, Cabela's and Bass Pro Shop seem to have better employees and tend to double check things when unsure rather than lying and then looping back on it when caught. A money grab that I will be sure to avoid when shopping for anything outdoors related. read more

The cashier situation seems to have been addressed. That did a complete store makeover and there is hardly ever a line. When there is, it moves quickly. The price matching their competitors so if you find it cheaper somewhere else, but Sportsmans is more convenient, then you can take the add to them. read more

Good service and friendly employees. Recently bought a compound bow for Christmas. Bow dept adjusted it to my size and then I test fired it. Worked good. After Christmas I sited it in and a week later took it back to the bow dept and had the guy paper check it. Two miner adjustments and that arrow was flying perfectly straight.
